Don't know if it's helpful after 4 months but I managed to trigger the whole spirit temple quest after getting far two inquisitive over the stormy island over Faron. It took around 2 hours at two o'clock in the morning and and whole lot of squinting and guessing at the barest outlines of landmass on the misty map but I finally managed to stumble my way across the island and into the dragon's head, where the beacon was waiting. I had no idea what I was doing. I had no idea where I was supposed to aim for. I was just determined to explore this completely obscured island and I ended up getting sidetracked by the spirit temple 😂. So yeah, that felt fantastic... until the spirit sage was revealed later on and the narrative felt completely thrown off because I'd been playing with that mech suit since before completing the last two regions. And then of course I was later solving the Ring Ruin mysteries only for it to clear the fog from the island I'd already solved 😅 pack your frog suits and sticky potions cus it's absolutely possible.

Did spirit 1st be accident on my first playthrough too. The way I did it was using the scope markers. They only activate if you hit playable land ,so when aiming horizontaly I marked which places were land and it would fail if it was just empty sky. A few springs and stamina foods, and it was all good.
