  • What is ‘The Percival Push’?
    THE PERCIVAL PUSH·SUNDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2019·
In 1986, our grandad (Dave) and three of his friends completed a 130-mile wheelchair push from Sawston, Cambridgeshire to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. In April 2020, we (Paul, Adam, Simon and Alice Percival) will recreate that journey and take on the challenge to raise money for two charities, selected by our grandad, that have given him a great deal of support during a difficult period: Arthur Rank Hospice and Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Arthur Rank Hospice supports people in Cambridgeshire living with a life-limiting illness and those who need end-of-life care.

Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis advocates for patients and provides support to improve their quality of life. They support research into improved outcomes and greater understanding of the disease and work to raise awareness among of IPD (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) amongst the medical profession, decision-makers, and the wider public.

We will be following the ‘scenic route’ from Sawston to Harwich (3-days), crossing by ferry to the Hook of Holland, and then heading North up the coast to Amsterdam (2-days). None of us have any experience of using wheelchairs prior to taking up this challenge so it is going to be quite the adventure! At around 35km per day, it is the equivalent of taking up running by committing to five marathons in five days!
    Why ‘The Percival Push?
Dave has done a huge amount of fundraising for various causes over the years, including long distance wheelchair events to Amseterdam, over Scottish mountains, and across the North Yorkshire Moors. In Yorkshire, his event was refered to as ‘The Percival Push’ and led to the opening of a number of accessible routes for people with mobility aids to enjoy the Moors. For the extra link with our grandad’s efforts we decided to borrow that name - and hopefully a bit of that success rubs off on us!
