This game is an absolute minefield, people love it to death, people hate it to death, no matter which end of the spectrum you fall under, people are gonna hate ya for it! Which is why I did my absolute best to try and give this game a fair review, by coming into it completely spoiler free, and talking about the game based on it's own merits.

I quite liked this video and thought it was thoroughly entertaining, but I have to wonder why it gets a 7/10, specifically because of 25:03, if a game had me mostly bored in that way I would give it around a 4/10. I understand why parts have to be slow in games, it can't all be action but something like would be unacceptable to me (I haven't played it as I don't have PS4 so I am going off of your review for it)

    • @calemr
      @calemr 4 года назад +4

The more they showed of him, the Less I thought it was feasible to make the "Vaccine".
First: Vaccines don't work for fungal infections. I thought "Eh, it's probably a layman's term.". Apparently not.
Second: Vaccines are not cures. Everyone uses the terms interchangeably. Does this idiot not understand this?
Third: He takes ABBY saying "I'd be ok with it." As consent to kill Ellie. A: Holy fuck that's a total disrespect to her bodily autonomy, fuck that guy. B: A lot of people talk a big game when they're sacrificing someone else... C: Has this "Doctor" never taken the Hippocratic oath?
Fourth: Within what, 2 hours max? He's decided "Yup, got all the blood work, spinal fluid, scans, and non-lethal biopsies done. Time to kill our one and only subject!"? Dudes a fucking quack.
Fifth: does he have any idea about distribution? People act like it's going to be "Oh, I have made a cure. We now have unlimited amounts and a worldwide dispersal method."
Also, non-"Abby's dad isn't a real doctor." Issues:
Zombies can still tear your throat out. This is shown to be far more common of a hazard than spores.
      Gasmasks work.
Raiders, warlords, and terrorists (Like the fireflies...) Are a far bigger threat than any of them. All this does is give more power to the people who were blowing up quarentine checkpoints and helping the infection spread.
Lack of supplies is a bigger problem than spores... At least until the second game when everyone seems to fixed that off screen...
They act like "Joel doomed the world for Ellie against her will." When it's "Joel saved an unconcious girl who'd be too young to consent anyway, from a naive moron who'd have failed if we were Lucky, and given huge power to a band of warlords if not, sparking greater conflicts."

This is probably the best review of the game I've seen so far. I myself had trouble deciding whether or not to like what I had just experienced as the credits rolled. I liked the idea of the story, but the execution was just all over the place. Some of the side characters were, like you said, underdeveloped. I did like Yara and Lev though. The pacing was the worst part of the game. I agree with pretty much everything you said, except the gameplay being great. I found it to get tiresome relatively quickly, but to each their own.

      How I reactioned:
Jackson: some parts I like and some parts I don’t
Ellie’s oversleeping : Hahahahahaa.... Her cussing makes me want to keep seeing this part.
Bigot sandwich : Awful Script and out of character
      Snowball fight :Lol
Why do we keep focus on the dance night excessive kiss off and on all the way up a little over 1 hour of the game? It could have been cut very short. It’s a waste in my opinion. Bad script
Blizzard Patrol part : Yah... We get to see Ellie’s sarcastic side once again.
Weed den: Ridiculous, dirty, and entertaining. Then, Ellie and Dina’s stoned extreme kissing to suggesting they got sexual on a sofa/“Jane The Virgin” level scene. Ehhhh...yuccckkk...skip 🤢🤢🤢
Joel saving Abby and the way Joel dies = awful script/bullmess writing and seems rushed. In Jackson, Abby was annoying in my opinion.
Ellie talking to Tommy = 👍👍
Ellie and Dina in Joel’s house = 👍👍
Ellie Seattle day 1 : Slow paced, relaxing, and a little of dullness in some areas🙄🙄. Red room part was one of the better parts in day 1. Ellie’s immunity announcement for the 2nd time😁😁😁😁
Ellie seattle day 2 : I like quite bit of parts, but not everything. We get to see Ellie and Jesse’s friendship. I love that car chase. Seraphites/Scars when we get to see all of Ellie’s skills👍👍 Dina gives Ellie the lucky bracelet and their chemistry was 😬😬😬 in that scene.
Ellie Seattle day 3 : I like quite bit of parts, but not everything. The flood Seattle city boat part was cool to me. It’s that Jesse’s death is terrible and random as heck😰😰, but not as bad as Joel’s death.
Abby Seattle day 1 : Really boring from the beginning to nearly the end😑😑😑. Issac was the most interesting part. Too much about “generic” ex boyfriend Owen🙄😨. That Abby and Owen’s boat porno sexual affair/HBO level scene.... So disgusting🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢... skip
Abby Seattle day 2 : Still not liking these Abby flashbacks🤨🤨😕😕. Still boring, including the zebra part and aquarium parts. Not as boring. We get to see Abby bonding Lev and Yara. Lev is kind of boring, but not as bad as Owen.
Abby Seattle day 3 : I like it for the most part. Abby really improves as a character in Day 3. Still don’t care about Lev. The burning fire town was intense. That Abby and Ellie’s theater fight was just something🤨🤨🤨
Farm : Cute when Ellie dances with JJ and Dina. Ellie forces the sarcastic out of herself, but it’s not working😕. Ellie’s panic attack was intense. Once Tommy starts aruging, the farm becomes dragging. It’s like get to the action already.
Santa Barbara : I had several mixed feelings about Santa Barbara. Confusion, dislike, slow, and like. Confused and it was on the slower side during half of this chapter, including Abby part and Ellie’s part. some of early Ellie’s Santa Barbara gameplay was a little dull. I love the part when Ellie gets the 2nd bite and how her sarcastic self responds to it. “Ellie helps the prisoners“ scene = 👍👍 < in character
Ellie and Abby’s beach boss fight. She could have killed Abby because it makes more sense, based on her character. Abby in that rope, Ellie could have got her with the gun and go back to the farm easily. That final boss fight was pure plot armor and wasted.
Farm ending: Very very sad. The only part I like is that Ellie and Joel’s flashback because we get to see a deep meaningful of their father figure to daughter relationship. I hate that Neil confirms that Ellie loses everything by the time farm ending comes. Neil, why did you have to do Ellie so dirty? She has been through enough.
Ellie and Dina’s relationship was somehow decent, but far from great.
Abby and Owen’s relationship was awkward and boring. The most interesting part is that Owen cheats on pregnant Mel with Abby.
Best relationship : Ellie and Joel’s foster father to daughter relationship, Ellie and Jesse’s friendship
Worst characters : Owen, Mel, Lev
Best characters : Ellie, Tommy, Maria, and Jesse
Favorite parts : The part where Ellie tells Dina that she's immune for the 2nd time, Jesse’s car chase, Ellie’s Scars combat, and 17 year old Ellie flashback with Joel and Tommy.
Story/script : 5.1/10 At least, the story is better than Mitsuki disappearance arc from Boruto anime. The 1st Last Of Us story was so much better.
Pacing and order of the story : 4.1/10
      Voice acting : 8/10
      Gameplay/combat : 7/10
      Environmental details : 8.5/10
      Graphics : 9.1/10
This is just my personal opinion.

    • @Ckoz2829
      @Ckoz2829 4 года назад +11

The pacing was pretty awkward. I didn’t like how Ellie’s story get’s put on hold abruptly like that. And as much as I liked Abby, I feel like her half of the story was way longer and steals the spotlight off of Ellie for too long. Not to mention the transition between the two characters feel like starting a new game almost. Very jarring.
I wonder if it would have been better if they jumped between characters every few chapters. I had more I wanted to say about this but lost my train of thought. Sorry.
Anyway, aside from the strange pacing, I thought the game was great! I agree with just about everything Renan said here.

Charlie Koszulinski Interesting point of view. By Abby’s day 3, I didn’t exactly think Abby was a bad and annoying character. I’m team Ellie all day, I didn’t like her as much as I did in part 1. She feels out of character sometimes to me in the new game. I can understand her being cold and stuff since she was already more quiet after the David part.

Bad thing happens to character and character sets out for revenge. They find the bad guy and are destroyed. They are about to give up, but then find inspiration to continue. Eventually, they figure out that revenge is bad, usually with the perpetrator dying but having redeemed themselves. It is in no way creative.

@Anunay Gupta So yeah, this game is meant to show you that there are always two sides to one story. Ellie and Joel was the Villain to Abby, and Abby was the Villain to Ellie. This completely blew over everyone's head. Shows how intelligent the gaming community is.

Anunay Gupta it’s impossible to find a game better than last of us part 2 in PlayStation and I nearly played all the exclusives. The fluidity of character movements, kill animations, and gameplay overall is really good, I finished the game on realistic difficulty and maybe that made it more interesting I don’t know about that but gameplay is really engaging and immersive. And personally I really liked the story and its brutality because I tried to listen to the story instead of picking sides but I think liking the story is personal. But the gameplay and graphics are top-notch in PlayStation

11:57 actually my issue with Ellie’s portion of the story is that the pacing is DREADFUL. Nearly all of the extended walking/traversal and light-platforming/puzzle sections are in her half of the game.
She doesn’t have nearly as many set-piece locations, nor does she have nearly as many unique encounters. 90% of her campaign is just getting from point A to B, and more than half of that is alone, without any narrative or character development.
There are just WAY TOO MANY periods where nothing outside of ‘world-building’ is taking place in Ellie’s campaign.
Abby’s section on the other hand is extremely well paced, and you spend most of the campaign actually developing her while also giving her the most interesting locations, conversations, and set-pieces.

It almost feels like the writers were so focused on making Abby’s section awesome, and making Abby’s supporting cast (somewhat) interesting that they forgot about Ellie’s section. Like it was an afterthought.

    • @andresemidey9679
      @andresemidey9679 4 года назад +1

Idk that seems like a bad take. Ellie's section was filled with character development, albeit some dumb development at times. The Synagogue portion with Dina was an incredible scene, with backstory on Dina and some relationship building. The weed stash scene was goofy, but kinda fun to watch and had a big impact on Ellie with remorse for what happened to Joel while she was getting high. The entire open world Seattle portion was an hour of exploration gameplay that was so much fun. Abby's gameplay I couldn't even get through because it was so boring, I had to skip through a let's play just to see the end.

    • @quiettimegaming3642
      @quiettimegaming3642 4 года назад +2

Andre Semidey The synagogue section is literally two minutes worth of character building in a 12 hour section. And while there are a few moments like that sprinkled throughout her campaign, Ellie doesn’t get very much character development by way of gameplay… Which is what the bulk of her portion is. And the rest of it is dealing with present issues, so we don’t really learn a whole lot about Ellie in her Seattle time. It’s mostly done through flashbacks, and in her journal..
And the open world section wasn’t fun, it was slow and only served to be a big distraction… Even the interactions between her and Dina weren’t exceptional, it was mostly just random tidbits to give the player random tidbits of information about how these characters think, but there really isn’t major development, nor is the gameplay exciting, or unique. It hurts the pacing more than it helps flesh out the characters,

    • @andresemidey9679
      @andresemidey9679 4 года назад

@@quiettimegaming3642 Idk if you think the open world section is just a big distraction then maybe you just like playing linear ass games. Exploring the entirety of the synagogue would have been no less than 10 minutes, with insight into Dina's life before Jackson and her religious beliefs. You can't complain about character development when you aren't willing to explore everything to its maximum capacity. Ellie herself had an entire game dedicated to her, which means she only needs a little bit to catch up to speed. Which doesnt actually mean much, considering how inconsistent the writers are with her actual character

    • @quiettimegaming3642
      @quiettimegaming3642 4 года назад +1

@@andresemidey9679 Yeah, we weren't talking about Dina, we were talking about Ellie. And just because the Synagogue section takes 10 minutes doesn't mean the entire ten minutes is character development.
      Here's what we learn.
      1. Dina is Jewish (big shocker)
      2. Dina's sister was Jewish (so what)
      3. Dina still prays sometimes
      4. Ellie isn't religious (big shocker)
      5. The game won't let you shoot the torah.
So what does any of that mean? I'm not saying it doesn't play a part in the larger narrative overall because character development is made up of a bunch of little things to give the player a larger view of the character, and I guess you're right. It does that. But we gt lots of that throughout their time together. And ultimately, Dina still feels under-developed (imo) and we still don't know much about her.
In fact, I'd say we know less about Dina than we do ANY character that got remotely as much screen time.
We know more about Owen, Mel, Manny, and Lev than we do Dina and Jesse.
And don't get me wrong this is my favorite game OF ALL TIME (and it's not even close). But I don't think Dina was well used or fleshed out, and she gets sidelined before we really learn much about what makes her tick.
And as much as I love this game, the first half of Ellie's "day 1" is the ABSOLUTE worst part of it, and it takes up way too much time. Half of Ellie's entire section is made up of Day 1, and not much of note happens. It's fairly uneventful.
And as I said in my original post, the same could really be said for 80% of Ellie's section. It's just her by herself, going from point a to point b. It';s not well paced, and it's not nearly as interesting mostly because the gameplay is too similar, the locations are too similar, and the enemies and encounters are too similar. Yes it's all good stuff, but there isn't much variety, nor does the game try to shake it up until you get to Abby, which is why her part is superior.
And yeah, I'd rather a game be linear and focused than open and meandering if there a choice between the two. And Ellie's day 1 meanders for far too long with no real payoff.

Here's how the game should have been done:
Set the game in "The Last of Us Universe" and have it be a brand new story about a brand new character named Abby.
Tell her story with the major beats from this game and include stuff that actually makes the side characters memorable and gives us a reason to care about them. Also develop the factions better because seriously the Seraphites are the most generic Christianity knockoff ever and the Wolves are just another post-apocalyptic group trying to restore civilization. WHY DO I CARE???
Have us grow to care about Abby through her actions.
Make her be an anti-hero with heroic leanings, like Joel.
Have her do bad things to protect Lev and Yara, maybe even earning their brief hatred for how far she goes for them.
Make the final confrontation be worth it and not just a massive fight between two factions we don't have reason to care for.
All the while, we learn that Abby had something tragic happen to her as a kid without specifically saying what it is.
Beat around the bush, but leave clues and have optional dialogue that reveals someone killed her father and she wants revenge.
After the Seraphites are destroyed and the Wolves are fully in charge of Seattle, have Abby's crew set off on a diplomatic mission to other settlements in the West to try to reform some semblance of the United States.
They can visit the remains of LA, Vegas, and other small communities to expand the world a bit and get to other locations since the bulk of the game was set in Seattle. Meet new factions, destroy others, and build upon what the Seattle storyline did for the group that travels with Abby.
The final stop is a rumored city in Jackson County, Wyoming that would be a great trade hub between Seattle and the East Coast.
They go there, have some adventures outside the city, and eventually encounter the massive horde that nearly kills Abby in the real game.
They are nearly killed in an Alamo-esque last stand against multiple Bloaters, Clickers, everything, when Joel, Tommy, AND Ellie make the save and get them out of harm's way.
They retreat to the town, fend off the remains of the horde, and take a few days to settle down.
Joel is introduced to the group, but no one reacts to who he is. They stay calm.
The crew informs them of the existence of a community in Seattle and go about their diplomatic mission to build ties between the two cities.
Abby and Ellie can bond, Dina can be introduced as her girlfriend, and everything is fine.
We could even have the dance scene with Joel defending Ellie from Bigot Sandwich Guy and have that final scene between them be the final time they speak to each other.
At the very least, we should get some closure between them instead of the “Enjoy the time you have together because who knows what happens tomorrow” thing we got that KILLED their dynamic.
Then, in the final chapter of the game, the group waits until it gets dark and approaches his house. Ellie sees them and follows from a distance, with the player now controlling Ellie so we don't have to be the ones to do it.
When she gets inside the house, she sees an absolute bloodbath. Multiple members of the crew are dead or dying, blood everywhere, the works.
When she reaches the bedroom, she sees Abby and Joel engaged in a brutal fight to the death. Ellie cannot save him because she has to fight Lev, who manages to incapacitate her with an arrow to the shoulder or whatever.
Ellie is forced to watch as the person she has been befriending for the past few days brutally murders Joel in front of her because she's younger, faster, and has Lev jump in to help.
Abby nearly kills Ellie, too, but Lev convinces her to stop and go join whoever is left at the gates to make their escape.
Ellie is found and barely clings to life. This sets up the final game AKA Ellie's Hate Quest.
Making it so the player grows to like the Abby character is crucial. We NEED not suspect, or at the very least figure it out and hope, that she won't meet up with Joel and kill him for killing her father.
The big twist that Joel dies should have had meaning. We should have fallen in love with Abby over the course of the game so we would have felt mortified that we unintentionally and without knowing contributed to the death of our former protagonist from the previous game.
ALSO we cannot play as a new character and attempt to harm an original character i.e. Joel or Ellie. Arguably the most universally hated moment in the game (save the ending and Joel’s death) was when we had to try to kill Ellie as Abby.
Why would you build up these fantastic characters that we have loved for YEARS only to have some new idiot that nobody likes run in and be forced to play as them while they try to kill the character you love?
Making it so you have no choice in the matter and are directly responsible as a player for having gotten her to the situation is imperative to the twist ending working.
The third game, Ellie’s Hate Quest, can begin with the flashback to the natural history museum so we can get one last taste of Ellie and Joel together before their story ends and Ellie’s new story begins.
No misleading trailers with Joel seeming to be a major part of the game only to have them just be promotional stuff or have him subbed out with Jesse in the actual story.
No hinting at him being a ghost that Ellie sees through her PSTD-riddled brain.
Joel is gone after that. Nothing else from him. It’s Ellie’s game now.
Any thoughts? I came up with this very shortly after I played the game and from the response I got from a few other people, they seemed to very much like it.

All that just so it's easier for you to like Abby. That's the whole point, you have to absolutely hate Abby in the beginning otherwise you would question Ellies journey. Going from absolute hate to at least understanding why she did it to even liking her in the end, that's the journey the player goes through. And some find it harder to forgive her than others, but that's life. You write some good setpieces, but the unique journey of part 2 is lost and it wouldn't be so emotional challenging.

This is how I would change a lot of Last Of Us 2 story even though it’s very much still a similar revenge story to Neil’s actual story. Not giving all of my ideas because it would be waaayyy too long:
Show dance night party in present time as the first scene instead of Ellie and Joel’s guitar scene. The only thing is that I would change is that Ellie do the middle finger to Seth(because that would be in character), not the out of character “I don’t need ............ your help” .
Then, go to Ellie’s oversleep scene and keep that scene the same. When Jesse knocks the door, let them have a full on convo about their patrols, not the dance night kiss talk and “Ellie, how you could steal my girl?” joke bullmess.
When Ellie leaves her house with Jesse,
A few lines about the dance night kiss and leave it as that talk with Jesse. When Seth gives the Ellie a sandwich. Let her give a serious look to Seth and the same pose whatever she does in the actual game, remove awful out of character “no” head shaking and bigot sandwich mess. Let just Ellie completely move on from Seth’s comment so she can get to her patrols. You can keep the almost same winter clicker patrol part with a different outcome and keep most of other Jackson scenes, including snowball fight etc.... Definitely change some of the dialogue.
In Jackson, Joel should have talked to Ellie and went to partols for at least 2 times in present time before his death at some point. Joel shouldn’t have died until maybe about 5~6 hour mark. Not because of Abby’s dad’s death revenge, Naughtydog could have changed the main story as like : At some point in Jackson, Abby finds out Ellie’s immunity and then Abby’s team want to attack her over another cure. Then, Joel goes on patrol to protect Ellie, then he gets killed from that by Abby’s crew. When Ellie is about to revenge and set up her mostly Seattle adventure, definitely keep the scene of her and Tommy in the house. Definitely keep Joel’s grave part with Ellie, Dina, and Maria.
Keep Jesse as Ellie's friend and Dina’s pregnancy. Just don't let Dina get sick at all.
Keep the almost same romance story with Ellie and Dina. Some point, show small flashbacks of Ellie/Dina's past friendship and their past patrols over the years. Keep Dina’s overconfident personality throughout. Also, Dina still gives Ellie lucky braclet, just in a different place.
Keep all of Ellie and Joel’s flashbacks, but don’t show Ellie and Joel’s guitar flashback until middle of the game when it’s a traumatic scene appears. What I would have only change about some of these flashbacks > In the flashback with Joel riding on a horse and Ellie first finding out the truth, she should have responded with a more of a blank sad face, based on her character in part 1. In the flashback with 17 year old Ellie, Joel, and Tommy: Ellie should have responded to Joel’s lie answers with “hmmm...I’m not messing with you.. Joel” type of response, not the completely upset response.
Show Ellie’s part 1 sarcastic side more often and be still very much cold instead of Ellie being so so cold towards everybody 88% of the time.
Cut down “plain” Owen or Mel’s sub story to small doses without being it ridiculously plain/or give Abby's total different set of ex boyfriend who has a sercet evil side that Abby doesn’t know nothing about until much later in the story and give much more screentime to possibly more interesting characters like Issac or Jordan. We can still learn about Abby’s father in smaller doses. Abby’s father Jerry could have been just some soilder or hospital owner instead of this random nurse/surgeon.
Make the Seraphites a bigger part of the story as a bigger group and make them destroy multiple towns. Jesse could have been killed by a huge clicker outside when he does his own separate patrol later in the game instead of an unnecessary stupid horror movie type of gun shot death in the theater. Show Ellie and Dina strongly reacting to Jesse’s death. Play as Ellie for 85% of the game and cut down Abby’s gameplay to 1 and a half day of Seattle instead of full on 3 days. Let Abby’s crew have separate goals in their life instead of Nora, Mel, Manny having this bland chill “Okay, Abby.. let’s do this” type of trait. Change Lev into some trans guy who was part of Seraphites and escaping because he wanted to be his own person, finding his own way, ended up being selfish after scary event instead of some trans guy who had some form connection to his Seraphite mom that didn’t like girls shaving head bald. Change into Abby and Lev were already friends before the game started instead of them just started out being friends in Abby Seattle Day 2.
      Near towards the end:
Towards end of the Seattle adventure, Ellie and Abby fight with full on weapons in the woods of tall trees during nighttime and both of them get badly hurt, not the partial fist fight at the theater. Both of them lose or Ellie kills Abby with deep meaning dialogue, not the simple dialogue “pregnancy” and “hh..good”.
then time skip to the Farm with JJ/Dina. Show them dancing together and glimpse of them taking care of JJ in the farm. Once Ellie enters under the farm, keep the panic attack scene. Show that Ellie have serous regrets, *flashback , and Dina have the panic attack talk with Ellie, then Ellie completely forgives Joel and Abby. Now, Tommy’s platonic relationship with Ellie is no longer on good terms by the time timeskip comes. Ellie plays the guitar for Dina and both of them are crying in emotional pain because of overdriven ptsd, Tommy, Abby, and finally understand that all Joel have done. (End right there)
      Or
After both of them lose their first fight, glimpses of the farm and them holding JJ and dancing around the whole farmhouse. Tommy still call out Ellie for not getting Abby in a calmer manner, not in such a rude/demanding way like he does in the actual game. Ellie can still say “Nope, I’m not going”. She ends up going to the trip anyway after reading some immunity threat. Santa Barbara, remove the whole Abby and Lev’s gameplay. Turn Santa Barbara Abby and Lev into two scenes. Ellie still searches for Abby and have lots of action paced combat. Keep the exact same rattlers trap part and the exact same Ellie freeing the prisoners part.
Once Ellie finds Abby and Lev, let them fight with all of their weapons in a pool area instead of Abby in that rope and fist fight. Then, you can still get a sad ending with regretful single Ellie automatically co-parenting JJ, *flashback, and then show a guitar from background in Ellie’s new home (End right there) instead of her losing 2 fingers and losing everything that she ever had. Show Lev running away and boat away at some other town.
Both of those possible endings still have Ellie and Joel’s forgiving flashback. Keep that flashback almost the same, but What I would change is how Ellie responds to that dance night kiss question and still be kind of upset about possible virus cure and Joel’s lie, but make her not be as upset so it would be more in character.
If all of my story point ideas were true, the story would have been at least 6.4/10 instead of 5.1/10. You can still get a very sad ending from my way own of storytelling. Now, I know all about the actual ending from Neil’s interviews. I don’t really like the actual ending that Neil made at all. *I also really like your alternative story idea too

Not every person that doesn't like the game doesnt get it or is some bigot, racist, or transphob lol..
    Honest legit score SPOILERS ::
    6 or 7 / 10
At best.. and that's only because the visuals, music, and voice acting were all great.. gameplay was basically same as first game.. story was hit and miss..
Great flashback and guitar scenes.. museum scene was one of the best scenes of either game.. but the whole game should have been more of that.. more Joel and ellie.. that's why people bought the game.. even though we all expected him to die.. just not that early (get to that later).. they bought it for that relationship..
But honestly here's the negative.. I just could not care about Abby and her friends.. we don't know them.. we didn't spend an entire game with them..
Everybody wants to say there is no right or wrong side.. get out of here with that.. I know Ellie.. I spent an entire game with her already.. she's the one I care about.. Ellies side IS the good side.. and everyone against her is a bad guy.. plain and simple.. no backstory or amount of gameplay with the enemy is going to make me like them after they kill a member of my family..
That's crossing the line that you never come back from.. once she took out Joel, any chance for sympathy or care for her or any of her friends went out the window.. at that point it's screw her, her family, her friends, the wlf, her past, her motivations, her reasonings, her surgeon dad, the vaccine, everybody she's ever known lol..
I don't care that he died.. or even really how he died.. I don't like how he died and would have liked to see him go out better, but I get it.. I also get her reasoning.. but I just really don't like where they did it.. If they had done it am near the end or somethin.. after getting to know Abby first and not before.. maybe it would have had a better effect when it actually happened because we would all have already liked her..
The reason people loved the first game, was because even though Joel wasn't necessarily a great guy, he still was realistic in the sense we would all do the same for our daughter..
I'm sorry but this wasn't realistic. In that world, letting Abby go is just stupid.. If it were a real situation in a zombie apocalypse like that, we would all have taken her out.. may be not let her down off the pole just to have a big drag out fight.. but at least left her on the pole...
As Batman said, "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you."
But no.. Abby gets to ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after as we cry on the ground lol..
I'm sorry but bad writing is bad writing.. every person is hero of their own story, two sides to every coin, revenge is am endless cycle, hate consumes you, learn to forgive.. blah blah blah.. I get it.. it's not that complex of a message.. in fact it's a little overdone.. but just because you understand the message doesn't make it the right story decision..
But if Abby had died at the end, people would love the game 10x more.. would that be predictable to some? Maybe.. but predictable isn't always bad.. sometimes it just means that's where people want to see it go..
Idk.. I just think there were some big swing and misses on this.. like all they care about was making somethin people would talk about.. not making the best and most fun and enjoyable experience..
Seemed like a lot of shock value just for sale of shock value..
But this is just my opinion.. 😊

I feel like its weird to say you didn't spend a whole game with Abby, even though the two halves of this game were about as long as the first one, meaning you did spend a whole game with Abby. If you struggle to decide she's amazing and deserves her place next to Ellie and Joel, I would just argue that that was the point. The point isn't to say revenge is bad, its to show you exactly why in real life no one who goes out for revenge ever stops themselves immediately and thinks "wait, revenge is bad, it's a fool's game" you are upset and no matter how much you might end up understanding and dealing with someone, that anger will drive you to want to rush to the end where you kill them. And ending with Ellie not killing Abby isn't because Ellie realizes revenge is bad, it's because that whole journey to California isn't about revenge anymore really, it's about feeling that otherwise everything in Seattle was for nothing, every wolf and every scar, Jesse, Tommy's eye and leg. And sometimes it does take actually getting to your goal to realize, wrong or right, that adding another body won't stop Ellie's skin from hurting thinking about Joel and Seattle, like she talks about in her diary. Revenge is the plot, not the story. You get to take in the performances, the histories, and the dialogue and decide for yourself people's motivations without anyone telling you explicitly, because its a story of events among The Last of Us.

@@brauliogomez9021 i meant you didnt spend an entire game prior to LOU2 woth Abby.. before this sequel ever came out, we spent an entire game with ellie loving her and getting to know her.. so no, spending HALF of 1 game with her, hating her the whole time, isnt spending an entire game with her or the same thing as our connection to ellie..
Shes not amazing.. she doesnt deserve a spot next to Joel or Ellie.. shes nowhere close to either of them as far as being interesting or well loved..
And im sorry but no..like i stated in the original comment, just because you understand what message they are trying to spew, doesnt make it good story telling or the right writing decision.. its on overplayed, and overdone message.. its not all that complex or complicated.. its not that people dont get it.. its that people dont like it.. theres a difference man..
The idea to try to make people sympathize with her AFTER seeing what she did was an awful decision.. they should have let the player get to know her and play her for a good while before doing what she did..
Im sorry if you are able to care for her and like her after that, then you never really cared for joel in the first place..
No amount of gameplay or flashbacks is going to make me go "you know what, remember you bashing Joels skull in?.. its all good.. no worries.. we cool.." even if i understand why she did it, which i do,.. doesnt mean im going to like her just because i get her motivation..
Also no.. im sorry but revenge is absolutely the plot for 99% of the game.. then the final 1% is about letting go and all that cliche crap that is overdone and overplayed..
What made the first game great and joel a great character was evwn though he killed alot of pwople, wasnt a great guy, dis what he did at the end... even with all that, we loved him and the game because we understood him and would do the same for our daughters..
They should have followed that same blueprint and had Ellie kill her.. even though it wouldnt have been nice to see, and would have technically not been the "good person" thing to do, we all would have understood because most would do the same to avenge and get justice for someone bashing our fathers head in right in front of them.. now, maybe not let her off the pole to fight her.. but at the very least have some kind of conversation with her while she on the pole then left her there to die..
Look i didnt give it a 0.. i said 6 or 7.. thats fair.. its not a 0.. it has a lot of good in it.. but it is in no way a 10 masterpiece either.. it has some major flaws in the story.. didnt really improve gameplay.. some bugs.. yeah 6 or 7 is fair..

I think the worst part about Joel getting minigolf'd (I see what you did there with those clips lol) is that he will ONLY exist throughout flashbacks, now and forever. I loved Joel and I feel like killing him early on is a mistake. If they wanted a real "impact" then they should have saved it for later. Make us fall in love with him again and then swoop the rug from under us. That way instead of a "Oh fuck off" reaction it would have been incredibly dramatic and sad. The way they tried to empathize us with his killer is just a big slap in the face if you really liked his character.
Its honestly insulting with the way they try to pander us into into caring about abs by having her situation be parallel to Ellies. Her design is badass though, not enough muscle ladies running around without having them be complete jerks.

    • @oinkleberry
      @oinkleberry 4 года назад +3

It would have been so much better if all the flashbacks were actually at the beginning of the game, in chronological order, thereby turning the pacing into a series of flash-forwards leading up to his death. That way we could come to know him again & his relationship problems with Ellie, then have the whole context of what was lost when Abby kills him. Also if Abby's flashbacks are parallel to Ellies at the front of the game then we also come to know her more and actually care more about her which creates GOOD kinds of tension as we near the point where she kills him. So just a simple change of pace with those flashbacks could address your issues with it. Kinda funny how simple it is to fix a lot of the story's problems...
& yeah I love swole chicks which makes me kinda mad that they wrote Abby to be so hated by the players. It would have been great if people had ended up liking her instead 💪

Druckmann didn't want you to fall in love with Joel again. Or ever.
He's a father. Which means he has to be shown as morally inferior, then die.
Joel? Doomed the world, then teed off. Owen? "Why should what he wants matter?" says the woman carrying his child into battle. And then he cheats on her. And then he's shot.
Jessie? Luckily for him he's off screen enough not to get totally shat on before Abby puts a hole in his head.
Tommy didn't have a child, so he got away with just having his marriage ruined and being crippled.

Without him, the franchise and its characters would never exist or be of the quality they were. He took a swing (pun intended) with the second game and not everyone liked it. I respect that a lot more than the tired AAA games that never take any chances.
TLOU2 reminds me so much of the reaction to MGS2 compared to MGS1 and MGS3 - it's very easy to write a long list of flaws (some more legitimate than others) and things that people hated (Raiden, Raiden, Raiden, etc) ... but it's still amazing and people eventually got over it because 3 and 4 gave them everything they wanted anyway.

All of this shenanigans got even worse with Neil Druckmann, access media, & some other VAs being passive aggressive trolling with the community. This is so weird & so much more similar with TLJ. I feel like people forget a little too much about passion. Of course a couple of things don’t “make sense” from a colder, more distant perspective. But I feel like Ellie was fighting with herself more than anything. When she gets that flashback of Joel before letting Abby go, she just has this change of heart once again. But everything she has been doing since Joel was killed was done out of pure passion. Extreme emotions. When people let their emotions take over them, not everything makes sense.

ollehkacb ah. Like who? How? We all act out, have breakdowns, change our minds at the last minute. If anything, the one I thought was out of character was Tommy by the end. He didn’t even wanna go to begin with and now he’s supposed to be all into this? But Ellie, in that fkd up world, has nothing left to lose. Given how she abandoned anything she could’ve cared for. Which I think is the point of the story. The consequences of your actions and how her rage made her blind to the point of losing the ability of using Joel’s gift. There’s a reason why the phrase “blinded by rage” exists.

+paupau93 Yes tommy’s whole switcheroo in disposition at the end was big doodoo to me, thank you for mentioning it as I now have a reason to complain about it in a very long comment. The only reason I can come up with as to why they’d do my boy tommy like that is so that they can hammer down through that “emotionally poignant scene” on one of their most blatant narrative themes, that being the destructive cycles of revenge (and he serves as the ultimate inciting incident for Ellie’s second attempt at revenge)
but why would he go out of his way to visit Ellie and Dina’s FarmVille family fairytale and
proceed to guilt, manipulate, coax, Ellie into trying to kill Abby when:
He was the one to advise Ellie not to go in the first place
He went to try and kill Abby only after Ellie would not let her own hard on for revenge go in an effort to help/protect her in the process, and that results in:
      Abby crippling him
An extremely strained relationship with his wife
If anything he should have growing animosity towards Ellie as her lust for revenge effectively caused all of the prolonged torment he’s had to and continues to go through. It‘s a believably emotional and understandable reaction that follows what the game goes out of its way to set up in making Tommy opposed to enacting revenge, only to end up giving into the idea all for it to ultimately result in his whole shit getting fucked up.

I couldn't be invested in her.
Because all they did to try and redeem her was... Basic "She was a human too" shit, and then suffering suffering suffering.
Except I knew she was a human. I knew she was friends with her little gang of sadistic terrorists. Bin Laden loved Volleyball and played it with all his terrorist buddies too.
She blew up checkpoints and quarentine zones, potentially increasing the spread of the zombies (Something especially hard for me to be OK with given the whole Beer Bug situation right now...). She also chose to torture Joel for no reason other than sadism.
So when the game goes "Look, she's a person too!" I go "Yes. I don't seek justice against a tidal wave. I do want justice to come to this bitch. BECAUSE she's a sapient human being."
And when the game goes "Look at her suffering!" It does nothing to redeem her in my eyes. If a serial killer gets in a car crash, no judge should give them time off their sentance for it.

The problems with The Last of us 2, is the fact that it is a big disappointment for those who liked the first game, since the second game has situations that logically do not make any sense, that is, it does not make sense to Abby killing Joel and leaving Elie and Tommy alive ...... it still makes less sense when Abby saves Elie's life the second time after she killed most of her friends ...... too it doesn’t make any sense to Elie at the end, after freeing Abby from the trunk (who was dying), fighting with her, to let her live… great confusion …… the story in logical terms from the perspective of an adult doesn't make any sense .....

    • @nullnvoid1999
      @nullnvoid1999 4 года назад +5

I don't agree with that at all, it makes perfect sense as to why all that happens-- Because human's do shit that doesn't make sense sometimes.
They SHOULD of Killed Ellie and Tommy, but they only came for Joel-- They're Humanity came into play and they tried their best to leave them alive knowing they killed the one they were after.
Abby says "We left you alive... And you wasted it" for a reason, because really they should of killed her but chose not to, she's not a monster but not sinking to that level had it's repercussions.
Her growing relationship with Lev, and learning more compassion and redemption made her decide to leave her alive the second time, she had already lost all her friends-- And so had Ellie, they both had 1 person left. She decided to leave it there, For Lev's sake, and for her Humanity.
And that's the Exact same reason Ellie let Abby live in the end, because through all the pain and urge for revenge, this whole time she realistically knew that's not what Joel would of wanted, and really, not what she wanted. The memories, the trauma just haunted her-- But also Saved her AND Abby, with that last flash of Joel and her Actual last conversation on the porch, that humanity in Joel even with him gone, had reached out to her from the back of her mind.
I think people just can't accept this because it's actually imo MORE realistic than how most media would do it. It's messy, and conflicting, and difficult for everyone involved with several interwoven emotions and experiences driving each party.
It's easy to say it's just some plot convenience, and sure to a level I'm sure it is-- But at the same time it's not as though the first game was perfect in that regard either (The FEDRA Agents should of just Shot all of them when they found out Ellie was infected, one was stabbed, and the other Agent just stood there until shot by Tess with a pistol, while they had an Assault rifle, For example), and really I feel like this is less of an actual plot convenience or "Hole" as some keep saying, but more a Logical-- Or realistically, Emotional Conclusion.
It's much less Logical to act like Human's don't have emotions, than to accept that and that we do things that are unreasonable at times.
That's the human experience, and that's how I feel about TLOU II-- It's very Human in a bleak world where even the best good is Evil by our standards, and people are just trying to make it through for their own personal reasons and for their own personal connections.
It's not as unreasonable or ridiculous for the "Adult Perspective" as you make it out to be imo, honestly I feel like people are actually being decently Childish about their approaches to this game, not "Adult" or "Mature". Not that you can't have your qualms with the narrative or game itself, but trying to make so many baised complaints and attempts at poking through holes in the story constantly, when you never even attempted to do so with the first or Many, Many other games and media with the same or worse problems is ridiculous to me.

@Dark Monster What kind of Whataboutism is that? Of course those things are happening, but that's not at all the issue I'm talking about or ANYONE was talking about in this context-- And I'm not weighing them against each other, of course all those things are worse.
That's the same as you saying "Ow I stubbed my toe!" And me going "Oh boohoo, meanwhile kids are getting raped and murdered right now and you're crying about your toe!", It's ridiculous to randomly throw that in there like I drew them as a comparison or something.
And you spheeling a literal Word-Salad of different insults and speculations doesn't really add too much to the conversation either, you could of said some of that in obviously clearer ways instead of trying so hard to insult their practices, it'd be more effective if you just said your issues naturally.
I never even discussed gameplay to any degree in the first place, so obviously you just had that one loaded. I have no idea what you mean by them demanding "Obedience" like they're your new regime, it's literally just a video game-- Play it, like it or don't it's up to you. And the original game had the same kind of societal commentary as this one, though arguably weaker imo. Shouting "Agenda! Agenda!" Doesn't make it automatically true, and even so-- You ALSO have your own obvious motives of displaying and convincing why this game sucks and being against it's ideals, so you have no real place to talk.
And they never called their employees "Bigots", half of what you're saying I have no idea where is even coming from-- Crunch time yeah, sucks. It's a big issue in the Games Industry right now in general if you hadn't noticed. They shouldn't have to be working as hard as they are and I can agree with that, though acting like it's Special to Naughty Dog and not an overarching issue is ridiculous and untrue, and I don't see how Bashing and Degrading that work gives any care or credence to those overworked employees, it just spits in the face of their hard work.

Something that bugs me, and it may be minor to some, but to me it's huge:
The only way they could get the scene they wanted (Without actually being talented, or lowering the shock factor brutality a little so it made sense.) Was to rewrite who Joel is.
Rewatch Joel saying "He ain't even hurt." As he runs down a man begging for help in TLOU1. He's not a fucking idiot. He knows violent gangs are everywhere. His ability to evade traps and ambushes are the only reason he's alive.
Then rewatch Joel saying "Y'all act like you heard of me or something?" As he walks into the middle of a room full of strangers, who were wearing patches that AT BEST he doesn't recognise, hands far from any of his weapons...
      That ain't Joel.

In the moments your talking about he actively had reasons to be suspicious, or malicious towards someone-- You're acting as though he was a literal animal that attacked and distanced himself from every literal single human being he comes into content with-- Which isn't the case, considering Sam and Henry he trusted fairly quickly, and it's not like he hid their identities from them (Unless I'm wrong), I actually don't even remember him ever really hiding his identity.

"He actively had reasons to be suspicious and malicious to"... A dude staggering down the road clutching his side and crying out for help? That's so much more dangerous than 6 well armed people glaring daggers at him...
Henry was not accepted with open arms. (And was a traitor. So probably not going to make Joel more positive to strangers) Sam was a child (And a stupid, bite hiding one at that.).

But as soon as you give the player control you can't realistically moralise on their decisions if they have no choice. There was no choice about killing Abbys dog and ND lied when they said you can avoid killing dogs. We don't need to be told killing people is wrong, we don't need to be guilt tripped about killing pregnant women. The game was cheap in how it set up the killing of the pregnant lady, they had spent the previous cut scenes having characters say "you shouldn't be doing that while pregnant" or "be careful" etc... Everyone was talking about her being pregnant, but as soon at a gun is pointed at them by Ellie they forget to mention that and her body is conveniently covered in a big coat so you can't see the bulge. Low and behold as soon as Ellie kills her the coat is opened and there you have it. Cheap, bad writing.

two lines of dialogue that made me stop and comment mid gameplay
Jesse: "what if we cut through this convention center?" how tf do you know what a convention center is isnt it just a big building to you?

Those lines seem pretty normal to me, the first Jesse and Ellie live with a community of people who were born before the outbreak so it's not hard to imagine them learning about old world stuff, and the 2nd line Yara and Lev start learning a lot of words/phrases from Abby that they don't understand or comprehend so it's not hard to think they just started saying things they got used to from Abby.

I understand your point of view, but if the story isn't good in a "movie game", even if the gameplay is great, it shouldn't be rated well. I really can't see it being any higher than a 6 because of the average-at-best story, and if you ask me, even that score is kind of generous.

I appreciate your fair review of the game. I myself adored the game, but I recognize that i'm just a dumb teen that doesn't necessarily take everything critically when playing, I mainly see people hating the game without elaboration which really annoys me but you were very fair and had reasonable points. I thought seeing the people you killed alive made it better since it was a realization that these people WERE people, similarly to how Abby is a person under her Joel killing antagonist veil. I also liked the mirrored beats and the two sides of the same coin thing but again, that's just me. i also wonder if layering days Ellie's day 1, Abby's day one ' Ellie's day two, and so on could have helped fix some of the problems with the game. Specifically the loss of progress in upgrades and the stretch between the first time you see the climax and the end.

Naughty Dog wasted what they could have done with Part 2. An obvious story, and Abby was completely uncompelling (that's where I am on the game empathy scale - I expect something interesting for my money and time). Naughty Dog cannot do this again with their AAA titles, and they know it. So they'll go back to safe fun compelling characters and an adventurous story for their next game. I'm just angry they did this with Last of Us Part 2 instead of giving fans something worthwhile. The graphics were great, the mechanics passable, the story was utter crap, and characters that fans came back for were deconstructed right in their faces.

    • @mravg79
      @mravg79 4 года назад +4

there was a lot of constructive criticism mostly about that the story does not meet several principles of a decent story.
But what was the narrative of ND? it was putting all the people who said anything negative to one bucket with label haters - and telling these people to F off.
With such nice narrative that *anyone* who criticize the game is a hater it just back fired.

    • @crazyinsane500
      @crazyinsane500 4 года назад +1

ND forfeited the right to have constructive criticism when they kicked out Amy Hennig and thought letting Neil have multiple self-inserts in the game was a good idea.
All that is left is to deconstruct what made The Last of Us 2 so objectively bad, because they went past the realm of accepting input a long time ago.

My pitch for a revised ending...
Post credits, we cut to Abbey and they boy arriving at the Fireflies camp. A firefly drops whatever they're carrying and stares with horror at the boy.
Abbey looks down at the boy...and sees he has a bite mark on his shoulder.
He is also immune! Meaning she will have to make the same sort of choice Joel did. Meaning she will suddenly empathise with Joel and the story arc of 1 and 2 will converge.
Meaning Abbey's storyline is resolved, rather than left hanging after having had to play as her for 20 hours!

When you love the first game as much as I do, played it through as many times as I did; when it is hyped and sold as the game the fans want - my expectations are, naturally, going to be very high. The game heavily leans on telling an emotionally complex story - which is what fans were craving.
What was sold to us was a stinking mess of terribly story telling and writing. And that's why I'm still upset about this and why I would give it a 0 out of 10. I feel incredibly cheated.
