Yes BUT. lemme explain my story lol. I'm in a very musical family. My 4 brothers are better musicians. I say my skill in musicianship is about average and unpolished. But in producing im the better producer. I can imagine the "musical elements" in my head and ask one of them to follow me and pull out a produced song. But I could definitely say that if I were a better musician I wouldn't have to be limited on the decisions I face during production. Like I can imagine in my head what I want to hear but I cant translate it well to my sessionist and sometimes settling with another style.
@@leefchapman From classical to jazz, rock, metal, country, hip hop, trip hop, ambient, jungle, house, industrial, doom, slugde, grunge, stoner, blues, folk, idm, black and death metal, can't even name everything. Too much music going into my ears and hands every day!
It's always so inspiring hearing Jacob speak. I think the most important portion of this chat was the discussion of just exploring the music and playing with it instead of being concerned about the technical knowledge of it. That freedom is what makes music so amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion with all of us Warren, Jacob, and Ben
@@Producelikeapro It's great that you get access to these minds, also the Steve Lipson interview was an eye opener of the nth degree, watched it twice or maybe more often, it was this inspiring! Thanks!
Fascinating partnership - THAT tiny desk concert is one of the greatest things on RUclips. There’s a great moment of realness when Jacob drops a drumstick halfway through and even does that with musicality. Awed by his talent
This 65 year old that has been playing since 1959 has seen the path of music through these two young men. Thank you so much Warren from the bottom of my heart.
Ben, Jacob, Warren... Thank you so, so much for sharing this video full of substance, wonderful thoughts and suggestions. And Jacob: Even though I am a lot older than you. Listening to you is so stimulating and entertaining at the same time. You are a gift to this world.
Dear Warren, having had Eddie Kramer as well as Jacob & Ben on your show is such a treat! Each of your episodes is infotainment of the highest order! WELL DONE & CONGRATS!
Hear, hear - at around 00:09 to 10:00 Jakob says something about following what we like. That just nails it, to me. YES, education is something that is done to you by others, and learning is something you do for yourself! Jakob, I am not only impressed by the music you write and perform, but to stick with what you want, to tell a certain Mr Jones that you´d rather be friends with him than to jump onto his offer straight away, that is something so strong, I am definetely learning from that!! Thank you!!!
I'm not through the whole interview yet, but around 11:30 or so I had to remember this quote by Neil Gaiman: "If you don’t know it’s impossible, it’s easier to do". I imagine young Jacob in his room just doing all the things, even the impossible ones...
Funny, that's something I realized early in my political career. It's easier to do things if you don't know it's not possible. The corollary is that it's easier to get things done if you don't care who gets the credit. That one's especially important in politics. 😁 PS Love Neil Gaiman.
I LOVE how apolitical Jacob is. It's so refreshing to not be preached at by a prominent public figure. He's an artist in the medium of sound, as well as video, and that's enough for him. Very refreshing, indeed.
this is the absolute best show ever! Jacob Collier is an amazing individual. I love hearing him talk about music and how he does things. I did not know about Ben so that is an eye opener too. Such inspirational people. I love Jacob's enthusiasm and energy. Highly infectious.
Well somehow I managed to have never heard of Jacob before and now I’m deep into a rabbit hole…thanks for helping me current and introducing me to this marvellous talent.
I envy you greatly. I would love to hear it all again for the first time. If you haven't done "Moon River" yet, save it for when you think you've experienced everything Jacob can do with harmony. Then, take a huge pinch of harmony (not swag but the expensive kind, roll it up into a fat joint, take a toke or 2, and you have Moon River.
The one takeaway is that you have to trust your ear. Exposure is the key here. We try and emulate what we like. Depending on your sophistication, your level of achievement will reflect what you follow and how you apply yourself.
There are 1000's words I could write about this amazing interview! It really, deeply, inspired me - it's truly wonderful to see this great team, creating and exploring new ways of making music, with love in the heart! Warren, thanks that you also brought up the "Negative Harmony" topic as well 😀
Wow, to be let into that world of Jacob and his producer, all these involved processes, all these developments of ideas…. Just mind boggling to me, and super, super interesting! Thanks guys for sharing all of this with us! 🙏🙏🙏 I just loved the questions and answers, and the way Jacob has thought so deeply about absolutely everything-, what an inspiration! 💛
Wow, what a great video ! I enjoy listening to Jacob talk about his process of exploring and creating different sound ideas. It is very inspiring to see such young people able to connect to all age groups and nationalities through music. Thank You Warren, Ben and Jacob for spending an hour giving me some more hope and inspiration to put in the tank so I can keep going. You all Rock !!
SO MUCH SUBSTANCE IN THIS INTERVIEW! Thank you Warren and to your team for the quality video. I'm a huge fan of Jacob Collier and his music. Every time I watch his live mix sessions breakdown I always wondered who the heck mixes these and what a perfect video to have his mix engineer as well. I laughed as you asked the question is Djesse volume 4 coming then I remembered in one of his mix breakdown on a Djesse Vol 3 song which the album (then) was not released yet and was already mentioning he had vol. 4 in the works already collaborating with many many artists. You've done your research very well as it can be evidenced by this amazing video.

What an epic channel and pieces of content here, thanks a bunch! Jacob has been inspiring me now for quite some time with his breakdown session live streams and his tutorials on micropitch and all the music theory related, super fascinating things he gets passionate about. So, so inspiring! And a side-note: I not only enjoy his talents, but his entire personality and he is a great testament to the humanity in all of us and how bright it can shine given a nourishing, reaffirming environment and the opportunities to evolve. He's a one man Beatles but so much more than that. He makes top shelf musicians of every possible genre weep at his talent on every instrument he touches. Utterly unique. Can't get enough of him.
Fantastic stuff Warren. Your interviews-particularly with Hugh P, Steven Lipson, and now with Jacob and Ben-have been among the best deep-delving content I’ve seen. Right up there with Rick B and that’s saying something. And you always create such good humoured and lively conversation. Best wishes and all power to you.
This interview was incredible. What an inspiration for musicians and songwriters. Your voice is unique, don’t stifle the weird stuff, just play/make music you like.
Just had to add my thumbs up ... one of your greatest interviews ever, Warren! Jacob never fails to amaze, whether it be his music or simply sharing his ideas about music and life. One of the most inspiring people, and you asked the perfect set of questions. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this Warren! I'm a die hard fan of both of you, and it's very rare to see these two areas overlaping when it comes to Jacob's work (talking in depth not only about musicality and work flow with well educated opinions, but also about all the technical aspects) and to invite Ben aswell, great consideration from you! The result was great!! Great content!!
Watching this in preparation for seeing Jacob Collier at the Hollywood Bowl in a few days. It's going to be interesting to see how he puts together a live show. Great interview. Many thanks.
Ben, I noticed that you're wearing Sony MDL 7506 phones. I love them, collect them and refurbish them. Most parts can be ordered on line from drivers, ear pads and cords. I put my own sp[in on them. The adapters seem to be lost a lot. So, I got some medical centrifuge modules just big enough to hold the adapters and tape them to the cord. That way, you don't miss them.
Great video! Jacob is a great master, a genius musician and a wonderful speaker as well. Thank you so much for this! I'd love to see, Robert Fripp, Nile Rodgers, Trevor Horn and anyone from Genesis.
I had a thought about your last question, Warren. No one is teaching (I think) young musicians on laptops or iPads. They are teaching on real instruments. Not saying that people don't self-teach that way. This is a good thing and god help us when guitar teachers teach guitar on VSTs. (Although, teaching aps are cool you still learn playing the real thing.)

I think so.
There are producers and engineers out there that are not musicians but can just understand musicians and that is the key.
