I love that close quarters combat with the pikes. It actually reminds me of the battle scene in Falstaff chimes at midnight which takes place in a rain storm and the fight takes place in the mud.
In truth, de Conde, the French commander, allowed the Spanish tercios to march off the battlefield, colors flying and music. Also, the effects of solid shot was well demonstrated.
@RommelsAsparagus I know but my friend maintains they didn't. Look he is losing his memory but is a learned man so I just leave it alone as it's all he has left
It's a superb film. It races through several parts of the Captain Alatriste novels. The dagger men in the pike fights is pure indulgence. Never read of a single instance of it. Also, the survival chances of such soldiers would be measured in seconds.
It's a great movie and the fighting is usually quite well done and very bloody and personal. Some of the best sets and gear I have seen representing the 17thc. I can't think of anything else that comes near it. For all it's faults there are many strengths. I wish more was done like this. As far as I know men did hamstring enemy 1 and 2nd ranks with knives. How often I cannot say.
Great Movie!! Most expensive Spanish movie ever (I think). It's a pity they condensed all the books into one. I think there was a Spanish TV series, not sure if it was any good👍
The TV series misses the great epic spirit of the movie. A bit cheap. This movie is FANTASTIC. And you're absolutely right about the books, they could have made a true saga.
In those early years of the introduction of gunpowder, the cavalry and the infantry were trying to figure out how to get the front rank out of the way, so that the second rank could take its place. For the cavalry, there was a maneuver called the Caricole. Have you heard of it.
The idea is that this is this is the last 2 tercios holding out at Rocroi. During the parley one of the Tercios surrenders, but Alatriste's holds out and surrenders shortly after the movie ends. The scenes in the film closely match many famous paintings of the period.
@@bigbattleslittleworlds Yes, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I used subtitles as my Mexican Spanish didn't cut it. Viggo was very solid. His best role IMO. The historical accuracy was stunning.
Horse walking into pikes for no obvious reason doesn't make much sense, just keep some distance to keep the advantage of the pistol range makes more sense 🤷♂️
Haha, sounds like it, but unfortunately, it was raining heavily at the time, and that sound is after trying to reduce the background noise on the video editor lol. Thanks for watching.

I have not seen that, I will have to look into it. Thanks.

Very true though a friend is adamant they fought to the end. But it is just best to say nothing.
@@nicktrueman224 They surrendered, but it took quite some doing to finally get the last tercio off the field.

One of the most interesting and entertaining movies I’ve seen in years, watched it last month
I really enjoyed it too.

I agree with the quality of this production being high all around. and it just gives you gritty realism. Thanks for your thoughts.
Nice to see cannon actually recoiling.
Very true. thanks for watching.

I will definitely be giving the books a read. But I thought the film was really good .

Interesting fact about Alatristes dagger, it’s a bullfighting dagger called a puntilla. The dagger was used to sever the spine
Now that i did not know. Thanks for that.
Shame we didn’t get a remake of el cid with viggo he’s got a good face to take the reigns from Heston
That would be awesome.
Agree@@bigbattleslittleworlds

Was that when they circled around in front of the enemy, fired and reloaded as they carried on circling? If not then no.
The best war film ever
It is so unknown but yet so awesome.

Fair point lol.
I wish I could find somewhere to watch it 😢I can’t even find a place to rent it
It is on youtube. ruclips.net/video/SX-y87nmZnc/видео.html You will need subtitles unless you speak spanish.
Yeah with subtitles go now!
I'm very alacontento you're doing alatriste.
Im not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing lol, but thanks for watching.
Is there a horse running around in your room or something?
