- Changing your handlebars is an affordable and fun way to completely refresh the look and feel of your bike! In this episode, we're swapping out the Granola-Moose Bars for Nouveau Randonneur Bars, mounting the new Microshift Sword 2x10 drivetrain, and going on a first ride to see how it all feels.
If you're a fan of steel bikes, resto-mods, classic ATBs, touring, and the magic of Velo Orange, don't forget to hit the "Like" button. To stay updated with our cycling community, subscribe and ring the notification bell.

I also don't torque down those screws down till the very end. Meaning until my handlebar turns downward on my first ride because I forgot to torque them.
9:09 OMG so true! I can't tell you how many times out of instinct I've done this magician trick and spent way too much time looking for the item lol🤣🤣🤣
For those who want the great wide-double sword drivetrain, but with a flat bar option, Microshift’s excellent SL-M10 thumb shifters work (friction or indexed) without any alteration! Also, their Advent X (right side only) trigger shifters work too. I’m in the midst of a bikepacking build using all of these.
It would definitely be better in silver. Same for the shifters (and if they offered brown hoods like Sensah does).
I have gravity issues as well. Pretty sure the increased gravity is from the small black hole under my work bench that sucks up any small pieces (especially the longer I have worked on that small piece) that fall to the floor. I will literally watch something fall, see where it hit the floor, and then WHOOOSH! vanished from existence (for at least 24 hours). Totally different shop, I make jewelry, but the concept is the exact same!
Excellent bar choice. The new compact drop bars are so nice. I've put FSA compact drops on two of my bikes. I've always spent plenty of time in the drops, but don't like cross bar too high, or headaches from craning my neck. At one glance those bars made sense to me, the sweep is the best. Perfect.
A friend brought me a very old BRC Alpine to overhaul/restore for her son. It was a step-through frame, 27" road wheels, touring style. It had this crazy steep steer tube. It appeared to have been all original with alloy drop bars. It was a pleasure to work on and incredible to ride. Your bike just reminded me of it. Great video.
First time I’ve seen this way of routing the cable housings on the back of the bars. I like it!
After years of being aware of you guys just learned you are local to my area. Recognize the B&A as well. Been thinking about a Rando type bike for a while so good to have a local brand to consider. Enjoying the bike build stuff you're doing!
Thanks for the kind words! Happy riding!
I'm amazed with the original bike. The way you had it set up would have been my choices if sourcing only from you guys. Great video.
Thanks for the kind words! Indeed that setup is pretty awesome, but sometimes you need a change. I'll go back to flat bars next year though when our upcoming kiddo is old enough to sit in a stem mounted seat up front.
Ooooh- more on the proto rack!
Thank you, thank you for sharing this.
What would be GREAT to carry from Microshift is their short-cage front derailleur. I wrote to them maybe a year or two ago to confirm that they actually manufacture it bc i couldn't find it in stock anywhere. Answer was yes. With the Shimano CX70 discontinued and the IRD one (actually made by Microshift) out of stock, there's no option. So VO would have the corner on that market!
I gotta admit I expected to skip through parts of this video but I watched every second of it. Great editing and commentary!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it.
Microshift and VO is a match made in heaven. Two of my favorite brands for quality and value when building or upgrading a bike. Been considering a very similar rebuild for my Soma Pescadero, thanks for the preview!
🧡
@@velo_orange I hope this means you will start carrying MicroSHIFT gear. It's so hard to find a retailer for them that isn't Amazon. Fingers crossed!
I've never seen any microshift stuff in person, but it looks like pleasant utilitarian gear. Does it run with similar shimano stuff? I have some shimano and sunrace mix bikes.
@@ThisTimeTheWorld I believe they have some bar ends and thumbies that are shimano compatible. I believe Advent and Sword is only compatible within their respective systems.
@@velo_orange thanks.
The Velo Orange Happy Stem changed my life. Thanks!
🥳
Great video. I absolutely love wrapping handlebars. I believe that years of experience wrapping hands as a amateur and professional boxing trainer helps.
Enjoy your day Igor.
🧡
High gravity day! I've been tempted to put my bike stand in a bathtub so I can easily find the parts I drop. One more thing, me at the lbs "I wrap my own bars." LBS, "I know."
Hmm this could increase my daily efficiency tremendously. Shower and bike maintenance as the same time. I might even wash my lettuce and make a salad in there (Seinfeld ref).
I use a 90s orange plastic snow toboggan as a catch.
“Riding on hopes and dreams” - too often my tubeless strategy. 😂
I recsall Ultraromance saying one of the things he wanted was more silver components - now I understand why.
We're also a little biased lol
a work of incredible significance🎅🎅🎅
The metal fenders are awesome
You have a beautiful bicycle.
I just installed my sword levers with an acolyte derailleur and it shifts better then the advent x levers.
Dont forget blue threadlock on the steering spring knob. I lost mine and had to use a hardware store metric nut
I would like to try an 11 38 cassette but can't seem to find one in the UK?
awesome video, can i know what trail this is? i also live in maryland and im having a hard time finding gravel trails to ride on
5:23 that kickstand is lit. I was eyeing a little while ago from your catalog until I realized that my bike doesn't have the right mounting point for it.
They have a bulkier but also reliable double legged stand that mounts like a greenfield, with a top plate and long bolt.
Try a non drive side axle mount or frame stay clamp mount for a greenfield.
5:44 gosh this stand is soooo massive
These videos are always so relaxing to watch, I love them, who makes those disc brakes? They look really nice!
Thanks for the kind words! They're Growtac. We're the official US distributor and getting a fresh shipment next week.
I have two sets - they don’t just look amazing they are amazing!
Hi, great video, just a question... Would you recommend Sword groupset over 10 years old Sram Apex? Thanks!
I'd highly recommend Sword. The range and the clutch is pretty awesome. Also the ergonomics are very good.
Oh you’re a rapper ! MC Spoke Wrench . Another great video!
What part number is that chain breaker - I'm having a hard time locating it on your site ;) Great video Igo - inspiring transformation giving me ideas for a New Year project!!
It's ancient lol. I don't have it in front it of me but there aren't any markings on it to figure out who makes it.
I'm starting to see more of the frames like the one you have here where the top tube is sloped/welded halfway down the seattube // as opposed to it's traditional mounting position where it meets the seattube just under the seatpost collar/clamp area. Is there a special name for these frame styles ?
Generally speaking, it's called a step thru. We call ours a Low Kicker.
is the spring thats attached on the down tube to the fork purely to help keep the bars straight while on the stand and for low speed no handsys?
It is useful for losing the front of the bike while it's on the kickstand. Otherwise it flops around.
What crank length did you go with? Just curious. I went slightly shorter and I'm enjoying it.
These are 172.5
Scratching my head wondering why you chose that conversion of bars and drive set when the bike as set up seemed great?
Would it be possible to strip the black paint on the crank and brifter levers and polish it? Like a retro-mod
It isn't paint, looks to be anodized. You'd need to grind the outer layer and polish.
I've been looking for a side-loading Nalgene sized bottle cage! Is this a prototype or something coming to the market soon?
It is a proto!
more of this! asmr vibes
Hello I’d like to convert my nexus8 interal gearhub from flat bar to drop bar but I’m blocked with the gear shifter which one you think will work?thanks
Oh I got you! Microshift makes a bar end for Nexus 8. Get the Nouveau Rando bars (the ones in the vid), the Microshift bar end, Tektro RL340 or Sram S500 brake levers, and bar tape. Then you should be good!
While someone is explaining why Shimano needs two tools for mountain and road bottom brackets, could they also explain why there are 10 different versions of the preload adjuster nut for their cranks?
We're waiting, Shimano!
Is that a home made canyon k.i.s. system that is visible between the fork and a bottom tube in 34:36? Any opinion about it?
Nope. It's our Wheel Stabilizer we've been offering for YEARS. It's pretty great for loading the front of the bike. velo-orange.com/collections/city-accessories/products/vo-wheel-stabilizer
Tried several times to reach Microshift about the release date for the sword system. No word back. Can you tell us anything? I love that this is the system you chose!!
I think they should be available within the next month. I saw a couple items pop up this morning in our distributors b2b
I hope microshift does release the silver shifter and rear derailleur to match the classic style bikes.
Nice video. Are you still liking the Sword? I agree that Microshift should do more silver components. They made some nicely polished derailleurs for Sun.
So far so good!
Polishing and clear coating aluminum is more time consuming and more expensive to produce than just painting.
Velo Orange site has Sensa 2x11 shifters have you done any videos on them? If not what is your thoughts on them? I noticed they are SRAM compatible.
I don't think we have. But they are fine. I've had them on a few bikes over the couple years we've had them without issue. I like their ergonomics and clicky-ness
@@velo_orange thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I have stockpiled a lot of Shimano 11 speed components 😂 - I need shifters for them. I love watching your conversions and just enjoy a nice steel frame being built and used! Cheers
OK I GOT QUESTIONS first hows the change of bars feel n ride ?? Could you make the silver cranks 2x instead ?? AND how s the new derailier feel in shifting ?? The new shifters do look good :)
It feels great! I'm actually thinking about some wider bars now. I think my body got used to the Granola Bars for so long. But the shifters feel great. The ergonomics are nice.
And I'm not sure how you would do it, but you'd have to de-anodize the cranks and polish them. They use a 47mm chainline, so you would need to get a crank that uses that. Most doubles use 43.5mm chainline.
I would rather a rough sandcast finish over caked on black paint. Bugs the heck outta me that budget components’ project mgrs insist on splurging on ready-to-wear-off paint.
I think it bugs me more that we’re being forced into these non-74/110/130 5 bolt bcd chainrings.
I’m very grateful for Origin8.
Please tell me the name of your pedals. Do they accept toe clips? I've been looking for grippy platforms that work with strapless Mt Zefal toe clips.
They're our Sabot Pedals! velo-orange.com/collections/pedals/products/grand-cru-sabot-pedals they're our go-to for flat pedals
@@velo_orange Since reflectors fit these pedals, I assume Mt Zefal toe clips will as well, unless you know otherwise.
I think they'll fit fine. They take toe clips, no problem.@@nickpuleo2744
Do those levers come in long pull?
The drop bar levers? I don't think so. We have flat bar levers in long pull, though
Timely. I just took delivery and installed new Sword 1X levers and RD on my Ritchey Outback - replacing the Advent X because the external shift cable was problematic for for front bag mounting. So far I think it’s an improvement. But I’m not a fan of the handlebar clamp bolt position 👎
That rack looks awesomme. Water bottle and pack mounts!?!?!?
Yep! We already have some things we'd like to change. Waiting on samples!
when is Sword going to be available for purchase? I've been wanting to buy this since it was announced!!
I think within the next month
@@velo_orange will you be selling these Sword components?
@@scottatkins8381 we'll see. Between 2x and 1x and 3 different crankarm lengths, it's a LOT of SKUs
I got a set of levers from universal cycles last Friday. I had notifications set up. I think they had most of the components but quantities seemed limited.
excellent chain breaker tool lol
🤣
@@velo_orange I moved to a hillier area so am looking to go 2 by on my Piolet, great vid ty
Happy riding!@@chesterapricot3480
What tires are those?
Ultradynamico 650x48
Nice build, but the black crank and derailleur clashes with the silver on the bike. Wish they were all silver or black.
All silver would be 🔥
Older spec Shimano BBs are the larger, you will find M8000 and R8000 series onwards have the smaller design
What would a fixie rider know about cable routing anyway 😂
Silver is the best.
be nice if they did it in a polished silver
Hard agree
@@velo_orange That really is an ugly black, isn't it?
This guy is like supa hot fire. Not a (w)rapper.
Cool. I would have subscribed if you owned a scale.
Call me crazy but this sealant business still feels so retrograde. The evolution after this has got to be better. I know airless tires are coming (e.g. SMART Tire Company) but I also wonder if the foam tire inserts will just improve to the point of being just as compliant etc.
Whats the bar tape called?
It's our Rubbery Tape: velo-orange.com/collections/handlebar-tape/products/rubbery-handlebar-tape?variant=36021190787222
You need to give that tub back to the post office, it's stolen property.
It isn't stolen if they gave it to me 🧠
I stopped going to bars. Much healthier now
Seems nice overall, but I can't figure out for the life of me why they keep making stuff with mechanical disc brakes. If this was hydraulic I would order it right now. Mechanical suuuucks.
Mechanical is great! I prefer it because it's so much easier to change things around whenever I want as opposed to the pain in the butt with bleeding brakes and leaky calipers. I have the Growtacs on my bike and they are damn good.
Mate, get a proper tool to remover the valve core.
wrap is the wrong direction...
I'm not a rapper...
