Chants in the old stadium sounded so much more poetic. Classy fans.
"Its not the same and it's never going to be"
MANCHESTER UNITED stop. you will never live to see soccer be the number 1 sport in America.
@MANCHESTER UNITED no one cares
Yes, we are!
@MANCHESTER UNITED F.C ...but not in the U.S.
We have better taste!
With all the public farewells in sports, and the club-choreographed cheering, this was different -- this was Yankees fans realizing that that might be O'Neill's last inning in Yankee stadium right field, and honoring him. Fans are smart when they aren't told what to cheer.
PaulWH very well said.
There are many excellent fan bases in baseball but I do feel that the one in the Bronx has a heightened sense of awareness for these types of things. Especially at the old house - how could you not get swept up in the moment watching history unfold. You are so right and the great moments are always better when spontaneous.
The other amazing thing is that the Yankees were loosing at this time, and the fans took the time to honor Paul O’Neill and his legacy. Win or loose he is still a legend to and the fans knew that! (Even though the Yankees did win this game thanks to Scott Brosius, Chuck Knoblauch and Alfonso Soriano.)
Yankee fans know when to cheer/get loud
Absolutely right. I'm a very old baseball fan and that chanting that night was one of the most touching moments I ever saw in a game. There was not a dry eye in the house -- including Paulie's.
best farewell in yankee history it was raw emotion it wasnt staged
Even Jeter's farewell, as amazing as that ordeal was, felt so much more staged - including the walk off hit somehow, although it was real. Possibly because they were out of playoff contention. This was so raw, one of the most memorable moments in Yankee Stadium history - and there are a great many it competes with.
being there live while i chant started i couldnt take my eye off of rf and you can see on the film he was getting somewhat emotional in the of it was amazing
Absolutely!
The equivalent to The Ranger fans chanting to Giacomin in his return to The Garden!
The Yankees started the roll call. And the chant of a players name .were new yorkers. We love our yankees
How would it be staged lmao
1 Gatorade cooler disliked this video
at this point maybe 1 cooler and a bad bat! up to 2 lol
Even though the D-backs won, this series was one of the most iconic in Yankee history
So true! I really thought they had the momentum after those three emotional wins in ny. Then one strike away!! Omg!!
Can't imagine a greater feeling than being a multiple WS winner for the Yankees, standing in right field and the entire Yankee stadium (the OLD stadium) crowd cheering my name
Far Too Much definitely a winner of life’s lottery.
One of the most beloved Yankees of all time. Paulie played with all heart, all the time.
The Warrior!
I was very fortunate a few years ago to meet Paul at a restaurant in Florida. We were actually celebrating my dad's second wedding which took place in the restaurant earlier that night and Paul came in to the bar to use the restroom. I introduced myself and we talked baseball and Yankees history for a solid five minutes. He was so gracious, shook my hand and asked me about myself and about the wedding. He asked where the groom was and I pointed out my dad to him, he took the time to walk over, congratulate my dad and introduce himself, then bid us good night. This is a man we both watched on tv together for many years winning championships for the New York Yankees, saw him in Yankee Stadium patrolling the same right field grass that Babe Ruth once did, and here he was looking us in the eyes and wishing us well. What a wonderful memory.
Beautiful words
I have never read 1 bad story about someone meeting paul o'neill
I'm Red Sox fan. But I'mna baseball fan first. Paully was one of my favorite players. Bc he cared. He gave all he had to his team. You've gotta respect that. I remember watching this game and crying when the Yankee fans started this. I believe this was the first time they ever did this. What a classy way to send off your Warrior. #21
I get teary eyed nearly 20 years later
Joe Torre said when he became yankee manager he was told from others to watch out for Paul O’Neil because he’s a sore loser and that he’s greedy. Joe said the only thing I saw where he was greedy was he wanted to get a hit every time up and if he didn’t get on base he failed the team. He was very hard on himself when he didn’t come through and it was never directed towards anybody but himself. Joe would have take a whole team of Paul O’Neills. Always gave a 110% on the field . #21
Francis Albert - We DONT win any of those championships without Joe’s leadership
I was a little kid watching him and every time he popped out he would curse. I always laughed when he cursed over something so simple
I get chills watching this almost 20 years after it happened. I can only imagine the chills that Paul O' Neill had when this started.
I get choked up every time I watch this
One of the most touching tributes in all of sports...
20 years later, still brings a tear to my eyes
I thought the director of the broadcast did a great job - showing the fans, O’Neil’s reaction and still showing game action. They stayed with the picture until O’Neil went into the dugout
And Buck let the crowd tell the story
Even as a Cubs fan I always respected The Warrior. He always gave 100% and played his butt off. That was a powerful moment in baseball history.
I was there for this game. The chants for Paul started with the Bleacher Creatures in Right Field and quickly spread to the whole stadium. It was as if everyone said who cares about the score we are going to thank Paulie for everything. I was seated in left field seats a few rows from where Brosius’ home run would land in the bottom of the ninth. Between pitches Bernie Williams kept looking over at Paul as if to say you believe this? One of the greatest moments I ever experienced at Yankee Stadium. Thanks again, Paul, even 20 plus years later!
Paul always got so frustrated and even angry when he didn't get a hit, but that emotion came from a sincere place. He ALWAYS wanted to contribute to the team and be productive at every single AB, and it would upset him so much when he couldn't. That was the kind of fire and drive he had as a player, and it's why he was given the nickname "Warrior."
Dad was a huge Paul O'Neil fan and I could easily see why when I watched his enthusiastic style of play. The guy always gave 110% no matter what. Paul O'Neil was simply a true master of his craft.
Paul O’Neill is one of my childhood idols, and such an outstanding player. I was 8 when we went to Riverfront in Cincinnati to watch them the season they went wire to wire. I actually adopted his batting stance to practice batting switch hitter. And he kicked a baseball well enough to hold runners from advancing in a crucial game that post season against the pirates that I will never forget.
Imagine standing in right field and hearing the bleachers chanting your name like that. That’s gotta be something.
A truly exceptional experience a relatively minute few have had the honor of having. I can hardly imagine something so exciting. - every kid in america dreams about it at some point and some people actually get to do it.
Especially in a place like that :)
Wasn’t just the bleachers
There is nobody more beloved to Yankees fans than this man. Congratulations on your number retirement we love you Warrior! #21
Love the Yankees LOL my middle name is Martinez😮 2:44
Forgot Seattle.🎉
Who retired?
Meant for. Seattle
Yuck Seattle
This will always be one of my favorite moments in baseball/Yankees history
In an era of these choreographed final year, farewell tours...this is so refreshingly genuine. Oneill earned that chant.
Agreed
I was at this game that night and hands down the greatest game I’ve ever experienced live. The chant just spontaneously started when the Bleacher Creatures started it. The whole and I mean whole stadium was in chanting together for like 7 mins. Amazing.
THE Warrior. We will always miss Paul O'Neill and the leadership he brought to the Yankees. One can say that Paul O'Neill was the most important player on the Yankees Dynasty.
Paul O'Neill, a true Yankee warrior. A beloved Yankee ever to wear the pinstripes with honor. Thank you for the memories Paul. I remember watching the game when the fans started chanting his name. A true sendoff.
And that's why his number is going to be retired.
@@Lord_Bibulous He was never HoF caliber though...
The context of this moment makes is even more beautiful. Less than 2 months after nearly 3k NYers we're killed on 9/11, these fans were showing true class. I'm a 40 yr old man now, and I can't watch this without crying.
Even more so within the context of wider events, this was one of the heaviest emotional moments I can recall watching the game - especially watching it live no less. The spontaneity of how that tribute to O’Neill transpired - even 20 years later - still brings a tear to my eye. He embodied so much of the best collective character that the late 90’s/early 2000’s Yankees possessed. It was a farewell to “The Warrior” - Our Warrior - that couldn’t have been more deserved.
god i miss old yankee stadium
If I was a ballplayer, THIS is the way I'd want to go out. World Series game and all the fans chanting your name. Nothing else beats that.
Most genuine tribute I've ever seen given to a ballplayer, only fitting it would be given to such a bedrock piece of that great Yankee dynasty like Paul O'neill.
Greatest World Series I’ve ever seen! Top of the 9th with this great chant and bottom of the 9th with the game tying home run.
awesome moments the while series was surreal
They lost it, but that was the most memorable world series I ever saw. Leyritz HR in 96, then the back to back homers in game 4 and 5 in 2001, never gets old.
the greatest epic Yankee send off ever in history
I’m not crying, my eyes are just humid
your eyes Sweat too.
I remember this. I was 8 months old like it was yesterday I still got the chills from my body.
Chills Everytime I watch this
I was at that game!!! One of the best games I had ever been to! That chant was so much fun! Miss you Paul & the entire dream team! 💙🤍
Excellent Chant
As a Yankee fan since 76....when I was only 9 years old...I have never seen a stadium full of people chanting the name of someone out of the clear blue like this . Paul O'Neill is a TRUE " Warrior" and true teammate. I hope one day he becomes Yankees manager !
Really gotta go there to feel it - the fans there ARE unreal.
being there live it brought chills to me, watching back still does
Crazy how we have come since the year 01.
The Warrior
These where the good old days.
This was right after 9/11 it was not a good time but culture wise I agree
the news of the ny yankees retiring 21 actually made me cry. wow.
I must admit that I have never had sympathy for the Yankees and at that time where they won 4 world series I hated them like never before but I also had great sporting respect for Oneill, Jeter and Williams. They really were always great competitors!
That's one of the greatest honors a player can get.
And it was so clear how much it meant to him.
best fans in baseball
Ha! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha.
My fav player all-time right there...
Gary Carter and Paul O'Neill my 2 favorite players
I hate the Yankees, die hard Red Sox fan. Grew up in Hells Kitchen, lived in NYC my entire life. For one playoffs, I was a die hard Yankees fan. 9/11, Yankee stadium has had some amazing moments but this Paul O'Neil chant is among my favorite moments in the history of sports not just baseball. I wish they won this series.
Favorite player of that era
Man I wish I could turn back the clock and watch this again as an 11 year old kid. And then do a bunch of things differently
Guys my favorite Yankee from this era because I remember him hustling out doubles and triples on legs that would barely churn towards the end of his career. He was all effort and it seemed to pay off in a big way all the time
While you're reminiscing of Paul O'Neill, pause at 3:17 to get a great shot of how beautiful Yankee Stadium was
The iconic friese
Obviously not a yankee fan, but this should give anyone chills
Paul O’Neill was the image of right field at the old yankee stadium in the 90’s
That’s respect right there
This series was much closer than it should have been. Dbacks outscored the Yankees 37-14 and if it wasn’t for Kim they would have ran through them in 5 games.
Best Farewell that’s wasn’t staged in All sports History and will never be matched !
I still remember the day the Yankees traded Roberto Kelly for Paul O’Neill and I read it in the Ny Post while in wood working class in High school and ever since then O’Neill was my favorite player . He Gave 100% every game !
Paul was a stand up guy, solid player
What a moment !!! Paul " the warrior " O ' Neal !!!
My favorite player
3:35 The Fox poll of "If you were Bob Brenly would you bring in Kim for the 9th ?" Is hilarious in hindsight.
Pauly is finally getting the credit he deserves!
I remember watching that at my old apartment that I had with my older brother and I got really choked up hearing that chant. The original Yankee Stadium was made for moments like that and after that I went from being choked up to be speechless because the Yankees tied the game off of a Scott Brosius homer I ran around my apartment like a lunatic after he hit that home run.
I was in the Right Field Bleachers, Section 37, Row GG, Seat 1. The Paul O'Neill chant started in Section 39 of the Right Field Bleachers and quickly spread throughout the Stadium.
It's a travesty that Paul O'Neill's #21 still isn't retired by the Yankees.
I was 25 at the time. I've had full season tickets since 1998. So I've seen a lot of great moments, and a number of heartbreaking moments over the decades...
Game 5 was a great game with a great ending as the Yankees came back to win it. Yanks should have won that World Series but the baseball gods just felt that was the year to end the great Dynasty. The last true Dynasty of the sport.
Mets fan and i legit hate the Yankees but being a New York boy and growing up going to games in the old Yankee stadium, i gotta say i miss it. I loved the old Yankee stadium. felt like you were somewhere important when you were there. The new one is horrendous.
I get more goosebumps hearing paul oo neil, than derek jeeter
I guess its the name
@itz Duffy agreed, very iconic, but for me at age 11 in 2001, it eas game 5 of the world series, never heard a chant like that, and world seriesmakes this much sweeter..what also helps is the engineering element of the stadium, as ive heard 2 engineers tell me, the acoustics are different in each. You could be right that it was a first. We know abt the yankee roll call, but this was like xpensive vino.
@itz Duffy yep, but idiotic business side in sports right?
We were honoring a champion ball player. Some players are All Stars Some players are great etc. But some just ooze championship pedigree ... Paul O’Neill had it in spades. We love you Paulie
20 years ago the Yankees, their fans and Rudy Guliani were all class.
Now none of them are.
The Yankees won in New York like that team knew how to win. For the city. Paul was the face of those teams. That type of chant has never happened before or after
I will go to my grave believing this World Series was the Pinnacle of Sports in the United States. The series had everything, and of course was emotional due to the events a month and a half before.
Those Yankee teams with Paul, Scott, Tino and the home-grown players, I could root for. That was a team, not a collection of high priced talent.
brettfavreify the core played for a long time, and they're back to being home grown, but the stretch in which they over paid for guys like Giambi, A-rod, Teixeira, they weren't as good, and/or likeable as the 90's teams.
@@mikeshoe74 I agree. It will be a tall order to ever field a team as likeable as those 90's teams again lol. Some of the best in history.
Oneil recognition is great and all but you know what I find so fascinating about the Yankees making it to the WS final that year and game 7 on top of that? The fact that the Yankees had a horrible season and played a crappy postseason. Half the time they looked like they werent even trying. That's how good the Yankees were back then especially. They could still make it to a world series game 7 by playing a mediocre season and an average postseason. The Diamondbacks were always favorites to win it. The Yankees were just toying with them throughout the series lol
Brings me to tears
Don't know why his number isn't retired...
My life is more then half over but be able to watch this live makes that ok
Wow, that was cool and classy. I just wish that the players would do a little bit more to acknowledge such admiration - just so we know they appreciate it. I realize that some might think to do so would mean they think they deserve it, or are hot-dogging it, but I don't think so. The crowd appreciated his acknowledgment.
“There chanting Paul o Neil’s name” wow I don’t know that was his name
Where?
Wow, I didn’t know his last name was o Neil? I thought it was O’Neill. Weird
The warrior
3:35 DON'T DO IT BOB
3:34 *foreshadowing*
Non stop for 5 minutes, that’s what we do
That ball 1 to Mark Grace was a strike. Not even close.
I asked my dad why the yankees fans were chanting paul o'neill not Big O'Neill he said they didn't know any better
And the Yankee fans did this while they were losing at the game and hadn't scored one run in this game yet.
Shows how classy of a moment this truly was.
Of all the great moves he made as a GM and scout, including Bernie Williams and the Core Four, the trade for Paul O'Neill was Gene Michael's best. With that deal the Yankee got their leader and identity in O'Neill.
Yankee fans are truly the GREATEST!!!!!!!! WELL DESERVED!!! Thank you Paul!!
They are not the greatest. They are not even in the top half of baseball fans. They are unbearable.
this umpire has an incredible strike call
Matthew Gorski Lmao makes me laugh
That’s Jim Joyce
They should have chanted for fairness in Home Field Advantage in the World Series for the team with the better record. If so, the Yankees would've won. Fact.
If you had 9 Paul O'Neil's you would never lose a game #Facts
I know a pair of twins who are named Paul and Neil for this very reason.
what a great day in Yankees history The Warrior
Chills.
Tim McCarver GOAT analyst
DAD favorite Yankee back then
