Hi Sir ! I need a dongle dac for Meze 99 Classics and I'm stuck between the Earmen Eagle, A&K PEE51 and Moondrop Dawn 3.5 mm. Which one of these should I buy or I need something else? I listen mainly to classical orchestral pieces. Thanks!!
Finally, I found an angle to share this on my Facebook page with 5,000 friends and my other page with 15,000 followers. Not sure how many are interested in audio equipments but hope to get more views and subs for you Lachlan.
I've got reviews of the old BTR5 and Shanling UP4 which might provide some indication. When using wired, devices like the BTR5 can outperform many dongles because of the internal battery power, but they're bulkier so it's a trade-off.
E1da 9038D outperforms the old and new BTR5 connected via USB, it’s really no contest. E1da is way more controlled, more detailed, has a wider and deeper soundstage, better layering. Even a BTR3k sounds more natural because it has a akm chip, but it’s a must to use the balanced output.
Any plans on testing out the Violectric Chronos? I have to replace my LG phone soon so I've been learning about these dongles looking for a compact dac, I'm leaning towards the EarMen sparrow from the AQ Cobalt and thinking about the new one EarMen is coming out with priced around $300 and it has it's own power supply... I'm not quite an audiophile, but I can get balanced cables for my Shure 215's and the rest of my headphones are 3.5 so I've been going back and forth trying to pick the "right" one lol Have companies made U shaped usb-C adaptors specifically for these dacs to pair onto phones?
It's unlikely I'll get to try the Chronos - sorry! The EarMen team are certainly excited about the new DAC, but I don't know much about it yet other than the fact that it's coming. I believe there are some short, u-shaped USB cables around. Maybe try searching Amazon and/or Ali Express for "short OTG cable" or something similar and see what you find
Good review, I would have loved to hear it like 2 months ago. I recently bought the S9 Pro. 200mw over the 2,5mm to drive my Focal Elegia using the Samsung S21 Ultra was was part of why. Plus I only payed about 80USD for it.... Now that you tested all of those, which one would you have matched with my Focals? I use the combo for office use.
I haven't heard the S9 Pro, but from those I've spoken to about it, it's an excellent device. For $80 USD I think it's hard to beat and likely only the more expensive EarMen Sparrow would offer significant improvement.
'm listening too with the S90 pro $116 amazon, with my Focal Elegia through balanced mode and it sounds fantastic. Not a huge difference compared to my Bifrost 2/Monolith amp....
I have the E1DA 9038D now for more than a year and I am very satisfied with this Dac, but I am wondering if it would be a good upgrade to buy the new SMSL 500D mkII Dac. I listen with a Sennheiser HD 650 and stream Qobuz over Audirvana on my PC.
Like your style thanks Qestion: How can reviewers prays this audio devices endless, specs tops most same priced non dongle with 32bit 7xxkhz, MQA, DSD or balanced out put?
@@PassionforSound The question bothering me is following; Lets say, my soon arriving Fiio KA3 is been said to be detailed, powerfull and all the other adjectives they can find for. But the same stuff is said about devices like lets say Schiit Magni and co. too. So can you say , all this tiny stuff been produced this days do beat or at leased pull equal to desktop solutions? I got IEMs and a Hifiman with 37 Ohms 97db, super easy to drive and this little babys can drive 300 Ohm. Why still buying expensive stuff when this incredible devices do 32Bit 768khz, MQA, DSD512 and got also balanced out put?? You knwo what I m saying?
I understand now - thank you. As you go up in size and price (i.e. a desktop device vs a dongle), the quality does improve because of the ability to improve things like power supplies and output stages which both use capacitors and larger capacitors can provide better quality due to being less constrained by size requirements. Also, having separate power supplies rather than using USB power will also improve the sound. There is a lot that goes into making great sounding products and the specs and measurements don't tell the whole story. Hopefully that makes sense.
@@PassionforSound I wish I could give you a heart too! I have been told that the power supply can have more impact on sound quality than a DAC it self. Believable, consider where the sound comes from (interferences in Mobile and PC). Unfortunately I dont hear a lot of youtubers mention that 😞 ...but would you compare devices of this two worlds?
I am running my HD 58x on the Earman Eagle at about 60%. Sounds pretty good. Sounds better on my desktop Zen DAC V2 but I appreciate the additional mobility. Keep up the good work Down Under.
Thanks, Robert. Yes, generally a mains powered desktop device will perform better than any USB powered devices, but as you say the mobility can be handy
I haven't tried the original Zerda, but I've review the ITM01 version of the Zerda in a recent battle video of dongles (I don't remember which video exactly)
Lol. So sorry - I didn't check the thumbnail properly to see where the comment was. 🤦♂️ The ITM01 is definitely a good option so long as you can live with the minor pops and cracks I discussed in the video when switching modes, etc. During regular playback there are no issues and great sound.
@@PassionforSound I've had the ITM01 for few weeks now and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It powers my planars surprisingly well and sounds wonderful. It seems the video game EQ thing is a common issue but honestly I never take it out of music mode.
While I do really like the Sparrow (balanced), the issue with the clicks and pops and the price point at $200 dollars makes it ultimately a regrettable purchase. I much prefer the iKKo Zerda, it's just synergizes with all my lower impedance headphones. The sound is more "artificial" from the Zerda, no question, but it's just a price to performance monster. I just wrote Earmen asking what the process would be for getting those replacement cables for us early adopters. I'll update this comment when they respond. Awesome video, really appreciate you taking the time to fondle as many dongles as you could get your hands on!
Haha. Happy to fondle the dongles for you! I hope (and expect) that EarMen will sort it out for you. My unit is noise free these days. You're right though that the ITM01 is brilliant for the price. I just received the xDuoo Link which is priced similarly. It's a shame it didn't get here for the fondle, but I'll put it up against the ITM01 soon...
@@PassionforSound How did you eliminate the EMI noise? I've had my Sparrow for well over a year and I can't seem to resolve this issue. I received the replacement cable from Earmen which didn't fix the problem and I also purchased a high quality shielded OEOTG Digital Cable from OE Audio but that hasn't worked either.
@@PassionforSound I think I scooped up the Xduoo Link v1 for about $40 dollars US when it was first released. it'll occasionally disconnect on its own, regardless of if the cable is jostle it'll just stop playback and have to be reconnected. Sound-wise I like it a lot, and unlike the Zerda or the Sparrow, I never get any clicks, pops, and snaps. It seems like phone USB inputs aren't great at handling dongles that siphon power. All my dongles seem to work flawlessly with my laptop but between 3 phones ever single one has connection problems. I need to try a battery based one but the last thing I need is another dongle.
That's interesting. I've found the opposite - that many of these dongles don't play nice with my laptop. I get volume control issues (like full volume from nowhere!) and one of the ones in this review started skipping tracks on me (can't recall which one). It might vary from phone to phone and computer to computer
I was hoping for Hidizs S9 pro to be in the mix but unfortunately it wasn't. Hoping a review for you for it soon. But as a side question; I will get HD6xx and SMSL-SP200 amp soon but I mainly listen on my PC and since PC's audio might not be good, so I was wondering how would a PC + a Dongle DAC => SMSL-SP200 => HD6xx set up would be better in terms of better sound quality as oppose to PC=>SMSL=>HD6xx? I am just looking for a cheapest option for DAC (only if it significantly improves decoding over PC's generic decoding) that can go well with SMSL-SP200+HD6xx. Hoping for helpful reply! And of course keep up the good work!
Hi Alex, the addition of a DAC will definitely help so I'd recommend getting something like the E1DA, Eagle, etc. (S9 Pro is probably a good option, but I'm yet to try it). As for the amp, if you haven't bought it yet, I'd recommend against the SP200. Something like a Topping L30 would be a better choice.
@@PassionforSound Thank you so much for replying. SP200 is already ordered from drop because it was for 140$ instead of 200+$ that it goes for elsewhere. But now topping L30 is also on my list because of your recommendation. I will wait for your review of S9 Pro if you have that in your to-do list. if its recommended over E1DA and Eagle than I'll go for it else it will be either E1DA or Eagle And thank you for recommending E1DA and Eagle for my use case with amp + HD6xx.
I don't currently have the S9 Pro planned for review, but you never know... At the price you paid, the SP200 isn't a bad option, but if you can flip it for an L30 at some point, I do think the L30 is preferable.
I know you can't review them all but my Helm Audio Bolt is a beast and made me regret buying all three Audio quests. I am glad they found homes and I recovered some money.
I don't have them anymore unfortunately, but it's a good point. I used to own the Red and Cobalt, but they were surplanted by the Eagle and Sparrow respectively. I've compared them in the Eagle and Sparrow reviews if you're interested
Very interesting and helpful analysis, Lachlan. Thank you for your excellent work. As I watched, I was struck by how much time the research and analysis must have taken, especially given the number of dongles and the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your work. Thanks again. Roger in Wisconsin
Hi Lachlan, your channel has informed me on the purchase of Hifiman Sundara, Ikko OH10 IEM, and Earmen Eagle DAC for the best value audio setup I would need. Thank you! Enjoyed this dongle DAC comparison too :) If I ever wanted to spend more money in the future, would adding Schiit Asgard 3 & Schiit Bifrost 2 be a mind blowing leap to invest in? (Currently use a £129 Audioengine D1 from my PC).
So glad I've been able to help and that sounds like a great chain you've got now! The Asgard & Bifrost will be a massive leap forward from what you're used to. I'd highly recommend that if you get the chance 🙂
@@PassionforSound I almost convinced myself that Asgard & Bifrost would be a worthwhile purchase, but for me, as tempting as it is to get carried away with wanting more, I struggle to believe that it would make that much of a difference in the enjoyment of music so decided this is my end game (for now ha). Hifiman Sundara £299 (now £269 on amazon) excellent - would recommend to anyone, even someone that was just a general music listener, none audiophile. You want good music? Save up, it's worth it. Audioengine D1 DAC £129, small on the desk, volume pot seperate from Windows to adjust volume, pre-out to speakers that mutes when headphones are plugged in, AK4396 DAC. Owned it for 6 years. Ikko OH10 IEM bought at a good deal for £140 & Earmen Eagle DAC £109 for top value portable listening. Total I've spent = £677. Asgard 3 + Bifrost 2 = £945. Colossal money! I will continue to enjoy your in-depth videos that have also helped me understand that as you go up in price point, you get small percentage improvements that do add up, but for me likely at too high a cost when I already enjoy the sound I've got now plenty. Cheers!
I think that's great that you're focussing more on your enjoyment of the music than the pursuit of perfect sound (which doesn't exist). Great job and thanks for watching and commenting!
I'd be interested to see what you think of the Luxury and Precision W2 Dongle. I compared it to the E1DA 9038S and came out preferring the E1DA. I think it came down to the W2 using a cirrus chip rather than the superior ESS chip in the 9038S.
I haven't tried any L&P gear for years now. If be keen to try one too. The Cirrus chips are also excellent. The iBasso DX300 uses them and that's a beast. So often it's more about the power supply filtering and the output stage. The E1DA is pretty tough to beat though. It's even outperformed a desktop unit in an upcoming review I've just finished recording
@@SkeledroMan actually it’s you mate. The best desktop dacs are using Cirrus Logic and Burr Brown. Literally nothing on earth sounds better than those.
Me: I have a passable desktop setup suitable for a wide range of headphones and IEMs, so I only really need "okay" sound on the go. I'm not even going out much, if at all. And so, I only really need a $30 Jcally JM40 dongle that I have now for on-the-go purposes. Also me after watching: Gotta keep my eyes peeled for when the E1DA 9038D goes on sale lol. Really digging these battle-type vids. Efficient way of reviewing and comparing multiple products. Thanks for the review!
I A/B tested KA3 on the 3,5mm output vs my E1DA 9038D and Fiio M11 pro. KA3 was so far behind E1da it’s no competition. The bass i heavier on KA3, but with less punch, less control and less texture. The dinamics, control, speed, punch, details and soundstage of E1da absolutely crush ka3, but maybe the 4,4mm is another story. E1da 9038d is not for off my M11 pro overall, the dinamics are a little better on m11, soundstage is bigger and better, and m11 pro sounds more natural, but e1da is way more close to m11 than ka3 on 3,5mm is from e1da. Testing was done with Fiio FH7, Hifiman He4xx and also using the dongles as a dac for my active speakers.
This may be a bizarre question but which little dongle made you "chair dance" . For example I have 2 desktop amps a Mjolnir2 and a THX789 with the Burson power adapter. The Mjolnir2 has a tendency to make me "chair dance" while the THX789 has excellent punch and impact great for Electronic and EDM. I really like both but in the end I usually prefer the one that makes me want to wiggle and lose myself in the moment.
It's a great question! It's one of the reasons I love the NextDrive Spectra X - it's got a really engaging sense of drive and rhythm. So that's probably my answer, but the EarMen dongles are excellent and enjoyable too as it's the A&K. I'd probably avoid the S9 for danceability and might take the S3 Pro over the Ikko on that metric too although the Ikko is more dynamic while the S3 Pro is a little warmer which can help with the fun factor
Using e1da 9038d here as DAC only, feeding a magni3+ with fostex t50rp argon mk3; and an apple usbC dongle dac for hd58x, in the office. I’m surely a dongle dac aficionado :-)
I'm looking for one but want it to also be a mic in, do any do this? For something that is likely used on the go with a phone, seems like a lot of them don't offer this.
Finally someone is doing pee51. U are my hero :D. Good roundup👌. So the shanling the q1 defeated the eagle in ur opinion. Does it mean that the q1 is on par with the pee51 or earmen sparrow?
Because the Q1 is single ended only, it's hard to compare with the Sparrow, but I'd say it's probably about the same as the PEE51 or maybe a touch better.
Alright so here's a bit of an update on the problem described below. I'm not sure why this has worked and continues to work but it does. I bought a USB C splitter off Amazon Australia which allows me to charge my S21 Ultra while listening to music by way of the Hidizs S9 Pro dongle. No more worries about battery drain. So, I plugged the splitter into the phone, plugged the USB C cable provided by Hidizs into the splitter, plugged the other end of that cable into the S9 Pro and bingo green light comes on...
I had EMI issues with Sparrow and returned it but from the limited time I had listened to it, I could tell it sounded really good for it's price and the build and size was great too. If possible, could you try and review the Cayin RU6? I have not had the chance to listen to an R2R DAC and I'm curious if the RU6 retains the R2R sound.
I think I explained in the review why I could only include what was available. One day, when the channel is larger and makes some money I will be able to afford to buy all the gear, but I'm not there yet ☹️
Good point about the AudioQuest dongles. I owned and loved the Dragonfly Red and Cobalt, but they were both superseded for me by the Eagle and Sparrow respectively. I covered those comparisons in my reviews of the Eagle and Sparrow of you'd like to hear my thoughts on the differences.
Absolutely. IEMs are never that power hungry. People saying that these IEMs need full sized amplification are not accurate. I'll mention that in the upcoming Timeless review.
@@PassionforSound that was also my feeling that comments that say that 7hz sound better with 1w and even better with 4w must be subject to placebo effect :) will be happy to know your most affordable dac recommendation for 7hz
Yep, that's complete rubbish. The Timeless need SO little power that anything so powerful can have no effect on the sound because we're listening at 1-2mW (estimated - I need to confirm) For a suitable DAC, I'd recommend the E1DA 9038S or 9038D, EarMen Eagle or EarMen Sparrow.
Any plans to check out the Khadas Tea when those start shipping out next month? Haven’t seen any in-hand looks other than from SnazzyLabs and Z-Reviews, and I’m extremely curious of your thoughts on it (especially compared to these dongle DAC-amps).
@@PassionforSound If nobody else is able to supply you one, there’s a solid chance I might be able to mail you mine once it arrives. You could keep it as long as you want since I have some other “on-the-go” options for now. 😄
I almost pulled the trigger on the Sparrow... But some users commenting are still saying the EMI issues are persisting. For me personally that's a risk too huge to take for the asking price of the Sparrow. Such a shame because I really badly want to experience its sound
That's definitely a shame if they're still having EMI problems. Such a great device otherwise, but I agree that it's a big risk of you get noise constantly
Sorry. I could only get what was available secondhand around that time. As for Amir's measurements, the only thing his measurements will ever show is how much power and how much (or how little) distortion. Sadly, this will never tell you how a device actually sounds. For instance, the Topping EX5 measures great, but sounds flat and lifeless. That doesn't mean the S9 Pro can't be great (I haven't tried it), but be careful buying based on measurements. 🙂
@@markpaulson1346 No problem! It's really one of if not the best portable amp/dac combos that somehow also manages to beat some desktop amps ans dacs as well
I don't know if there's a desktop system for the same price as a dongle that's better, but a low end stack like the E30/L30 from Topping would be comfortably better. I've also got the SMSL SU-6 and SH-6 coming soon which should be stronger and still very affordable
I use the E1DA 9038d with the Sundaras', a laptop and equalised by Equalizer APO & Peace at full pelt I don't really want to go louder p.s. I like my BASS
@@PassionforSound Would you happen to have any videos for tube amps to power low impedance planars like the Sundara? Something beginner level, under £450?
For sure! They're not pure tube amps (they're a hybrid design), but check out my review of the xDuoo MT-601, MT-602 and MT-604. If you search RUclips for "passion for sound mt-604" it'll pop right up
Cant find a solution for getting the Hidizs S9 Pro to be recognized when plugged into the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G - every other device i plug it into works immediately, every other USB C cable is recognized just not the S9 Pro DAC......and yes ive tried enabling developer mode, USB debugging etc. Contacted Hidizs ....still no help!
@@PassionforSound tech support at Hidizs wasnt very helpful at all really, they suggested the Hiby App (which is like PLEX what i normally use) and while it allowed access to my network attached storage music library, it had absolutely no impact or effect on whether the device was recognized and made available on the S21 Ultra via the USB C port. Usually the device shows green immediately when connected to other devices like my Dell Laptop or Windows 11 PC
@@PassionforSound no worries, would be cool if you could get hold of a Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and investigate on your channel might also stimulate a response from Hidizs since i have seen nothing negative or any other problems addressed anywhere online.
Cheapest thing apple make, is also the best thing apple make, nothing wrong with the apple dongle.. sure it's not super powerfull but its clean, just match it with the right headphones/iems...i wonder what % of people use dongles to drive headphones?
Don't phones with USB-C ports already have a DAC? I'm seeing both external DACs and "adapters" on Amazon. I'm curious to hear a shootout on something like a Pixel 6 Pro, wherein we get to hear A/B audio from an adapter vs one of these powered DACs. That's truly the only way to know if something like this is worth it. Adapters only cost $10.
The phones don't have any DACs if there's no 3.5mm socket. The adapters actually have tiny chips built in that provide decoding of the digital signal. Basically anything that plugs into the USB socket on a phone and doesn't have external power from a wall outlet or a battery like a Mojo 2 or Colibri should be considered comparable.
2 года назад+3
All phones do have an internal DAC to drive the speakers. Some phones with USB-C support a mode where the internal DAC output is made available on the USB-C connector. For those you just need a passive adapter with a 3.5mm headphone jack. I once had a LeEco Le S3 phone that worked with that type of dongle, and they provided one with the phone. But only a minority of USB-C phones support that mode. It does not work with my Essential Phone or my Samsung Galaxy S21, and I know it also does not work with the Google Pixel series. For most current USB-C phones you need an active dongle with a DAC to drive wired headphones. The Essential Phone came with its own dongle (which also works on other phones), but most phones do not.
I wish you had used the apple dongle as a baseline. for me it makes more sense because it’s $10. If I want something for desktop I can get a schiit magni for $110 that accepts three inputs. The Apple can be converted to a regular usb connection if you buy the usb c version and it’s tiny and cheap. I also don’t really get the value of these things. You can get the same capability with Bluetooth and battery for wireless use along with a fully functional app with eq control from a Qudelix 5k for $110. Just can’t imagine a reason I’d want one of these dongles.
It all depends on your needs. I can't afford to go and buy every possible option for review (even the $10) ones as the channel has previously only just started to break even financially. On top of that, what is a reference to you won't be a reference to everyone. Finally, the Qudelix 5k might be great (I'm yet to try one), but it's a very different type of device and form factor - it's bigger and bulkier, and is designed more for Bluetooth use than wired (even though it can do both). This roundup was about those products that are designed to go inline with earphones and be small enough that you don't really notice then. The 5k doesn't quite fit that bill.
@@PassionforSound I was just using that as an example. I’m still glad you did the reviews I find it interesting. I’m just saying for me personally I scratch my head on where these are the best option for anyone’s situation. Thanks for your work! Enjoy your videos.
Ah, gotcha. Yes, it's tough to provide everything for everyone. I see dongles like these, particularly the $100+ options as being for those wanting great, audiophile sound. Lower level devices and options like the Apple dongle in particular are more for convenience than top sound quality. Both have their place without a doubt.
@@PassionforSound I wish you could have included the $9 Apple 3.5mm lightning to headphone jack adapter. Despite what some people believe this adapter does include a built-in DAC. Belkin also makes something similar but they are sold for around $39. There are customers like me who want to learn about the higher priced but also the budget friendly portable DAC's. Thank you!
Hi Jav, as I said above, I can't cover every option in every review due to video length and price. I have to work with what I have on hand from suppliers, retailers and viewer/patron loans.
I tried the E1DA a bit over a year ago, during peak hype. Of course, there was no way to control the volume on iOs without specific software, so I returned it immediately
I haven't tried the S9 Pro to be able to say. I do expect (based on my experiences with all EarMen products) that it will still be a bit better, but if the EMI issues are still happening then it's a concern.
I had to say this, I held for long but no more. I can see the time and effort you are invested in making the video, but there needs serious improvements in your presentation style. I have watched many off your videos and felt this. It’s very difficult to concentrate on the video because of the monotonous feel. I suggest you to use more graphical comparisons, transitions, images, text and tables. It adds more engagement. I watched this video in 2x (15 mins) with pomodoro technique to stick with you(took the effort as I value your opinion). I believe you will take this feedback with a positive and friendly spirit.
Notice how he always elongates the vowel in the last word in the sentence. Same thing John Michael Godier does. Guess it's some sort of ASMR affectation, and once noticed is irritating AF.

I haven't tried the Q3, but I'd expect the Sparrow to sound more articulate and detailed because the FiiO amps seem to always blunt the sound slightly and make it a bit dull or muted. Having not heard the Q3, this is just a guess though.

The Eagle may sound good, but with that USB-A connector it doesn't look like an ideal device for use with a phone. Modern phones have USB-C connectors, so you'll need an adapter to plug it in, and a straight-up adapter rather than a cable would leave you with a big thing sticking awkwardly out of your phone. It would be great for use with a laptop, however, except one of the new models that only has USB-C ports. I have a HiDizs S3 Pro that I bought from the crowdfunding campaign and I've been happy with it. Its tiny size makes it easy to throw in my purse and carry all the time; it lives there along with a pair of IEMs. It may have ranked on the bottom in your test but it's great for my use case. Would I like the ITM01 better? Maybe. I know you liked the sound better, but it is larger. I don't think it's enough of an upgrade to justify the cost of switching.
The Eagle comes with a USB-C to female USB-A cable so no worries there, but I agree it's not as convenient as the USB-C native devices. The S3 Pro is certainly great for its price if you're looking for that compact, do-it-all (incl. MQA) device
The title speaks for itself. I know how I got here.

'm listening too with the S90 pro $116 amazon, with my Focal Elegia through balanced mode and it sounds fantastic. Not a huge difference compared to my Bifrost 2/Monolith amp....
I haven't tried the S9 Pro (assuming that's what you meant?) but I've read lots of good things about it
I have the E1DA 9038D now for more than a year and I am very satisfied with this Dac,
but I am wondering if it would be a good upgrade to buy the new SMSL 500D mkII Dac.
I listen with a Sennheiser HD 650 and stream Qobuz over Audirvana on my PC.
The 9038D is fantastic, but a full-sized DAC/amp like the SMSL will be a very significant upgrade
Like your style thanks
Qestion: How can reviewers prays this audio devices endless, specs tops most same priced non dongle with 32bit 7xxkhz, MQA, DSD or balanced out put?
I don't understand the question. Can you rephrase it for me?
@@PassionforSound The question bothering me is following;
Lets say, my soon arriving Fiio KA3 is been said to be detailed, powerfull and all the other adjectives they can find for.
Are you stacking any amp with the zen dac?
Thumbs up just for the title alone. I am fondling my dongle (DDHiFi TC35 PRO) right now.
I never thought I'd end up with THAT kind of channel... 🤣🤣
What do you think of the Ikko Zerda for$48? I'm looking for a portable dac/amp to pair mostly the Tin Hifi T2, Moondrop Chu and Meze 99 Noir.
I haven't tried the original Zerda, but I've review the ITM01 version of the Zerda in a recent battle video of dongles (I don't remember which video exactly)
@@PassionforSound This is that video mate haha. I think I'm getting the ITM01 after watching it
Lol. So sorry - I didn't check the thumbnail properly to see where the comment was. 🤦♂️
The ITM01 is definitely a good option so long as you can live with the minor pops and cracks I discussed in the video when switching modes, etc.
Glad you're enjoying it. I'm like you and just leave it in music mode
@@PassionforSound uhhh I cant wait for the Xduoo Link V2 Bal (I guess that`s the one you review) ..looks like a beast on paper
@@PassionforSound L30 is now in my list. Thank you :)
My pleasure
Best title ever
Haha. Thought I'd have some fun on this one 😁
I know you can't review them all but my Helm Audio Bolt is a beast and made me regret buying all three Audio quests. I am glad they found homes and I recovered some money.
I'm keen to check out the Bolt at some point. I think I emailed them, but got not response IIRC
@@PassionforSound If you get a chance to review one I think you will like it. Darko seemed to like it and I certainly love mine.
No mention of audioquest dragonfly red or cobalt?
I don't have them anymore unfortunately, but it's a good point. I used to own the Red and Cobalt, but they were surplanted by the Eagle and Sparrow respectively. I've compared them in the Eagle and Sparrow reviews if you're interested
Very interesting and helpful analysis, Lachlan. Thank you for your excellent work. As I watched, I was struck by how much time the research and analysis must have taken, especially given the number of dongles and the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your work. Thanks again. Roger in Wisconsin
Glad you enjoyed it, Roger! Yes, this one took a fair amount of work, but I thought it would make for a helpful comparison point. 🙂
Hi Lachlan, your channel has informed me on the purchase of Hifiman Sundara, Ikko OH10 IEM, and Earmen Eagle DAC for the best value audio setup I would need. Thank you! Enjoyed this dongle DAC comparison too :)
If I ever wanted to spend more money in the future, would adding Schiit Asgard 3 & Schiit Bifrost 2 be a mind blowing leap to invest in?
@@PassionforSound For me cirrus, burr brown, and AKM have always sounded worse than a well implemented ESS chip
I definitely have a soft spot for ESS chips too. Cirrus tend to be my second favourite though 🙂
My pleasure! I hope you find that E1DA special soon! 🙂
Hope you could review the FiiO KA3 dongle (FiiO’s very 1st dongle DAC) as well as I keep hearing great things about it recently :)
I'll see if I can get my hands on one (FiiO is tricky for me)
I A/B tested KA3 on the 3,5mm output vs my E1DA 9038D and Fiio M11 pro.
Thanks for sharing your comparison!
I currently have a Dragonfly Red. How do the Earmens compare to that?
Check out my review of the EarMen Eagle for a thorough comparison. I can't remember the details now because it's been a while 🙂
hi, what would you recommend for something warm sub $200?
The S3 Pro is a great choice if you want something a bit warmer. The xDuoo Link V2 is another
Tysm!
@@PassionforSound thank you. btw, which is better for O2 from the two?
My pleasure
For the O2?
What is the difference in SQ as a DAC only as opposed to a DAC/amp?
It will depend on the amp you're using, but a better amp will generally provide better detail retrieval, imaging and sometimes dynamics too
@@DGardn100 dongle DAC and desktop DAC might have different performance when it comes to crosstalk due to the Architecture inside
That's a good point too.
I'm looking for one but want it to also be a mic in, do any do this? For something that is likely used on the go with a phone, seems like a lot of them don't offer this.
Many of the wired dongles lack this. I think there are a few around, but I can't remember which ones
Seems the Creative x-fi does, investigating.
Hope it's a good option for you
Finally someone is doing pee51.
Ikko and S3 Pro. They're readily available for me locally and poor people like me can buy them for sure. 😂
Haha. Check out the xDuoo Link V2 as well. I've got a review coming and it's excellent
Interesting. That's a bit weird, but glad you got it working!
What was the issue? Also mind linking to the usb-c splitter? Cheers mate. Happy Christmas!
have you had a chance to test the Periodic Audio Rhodium ?
I hadn't actually heard of it until now - there's so much gear to keep track of
Thumb up just for the Title.
Haha. Glad you liked it 😁
I had EMI issues with Sparrow and returned it but from the limited time I had listened to it, I could tell it sounded really good for it's price and the build and size was great too.
If possible, could you try and review the Cayin RU6? I have not had the chance to listen to an R2R DAC and I'm curious if the RU6 retains the R2R sound.
Yes, the early Sparrow units had some big problems with EMI.
I have an RU6 coming soon so stay tuned 🙂
Great review but you should have included the Hidizs S9 Pro with balanced output and the new Cayin RU6 R2R DAC.
I think I explained in the review why I could only include what was available. One day, when the channel is larger and makes some money I will be able to afford to buy all the gear, but I'm not there yet ☹️
@@PassionforSound But you will :)
Thanks Victor
Great overview, though surprised not to see any audioquest dongles in here
Good point about the AudioQuest dongles. I owned and loved the Dragonfly Red and Cobalt, but they were both superseded for me by the Eagle and Sparrow respectively. I covered those comparisons in my reviews of the Eagle and Sparrow of you'd like to hear my thoughts on the differences.
@@PassionforSound perfect, will do
My impression of the S9 Pro is similar to yours on the S9. The unbalanced output doesn't add anything except power.
Thanks for sharing your experiences of the Pro!
Would be great to listen/watch fondle 2 the sequel with L&P W2, PAW S2, EarMen Colibri and Cayin RU6.
The Cayin RU6 is coming soon, but I'm not sure I can gather all of them together at the same time again - it was a bit of a unique opportunity
do you recommend such dongles for planar iem such as 7hz/s12) (low impedance but power hungry)?
The Timeless need SO little power that anything so powerful can have no effect on the sound because we're listening at 1-2mW (estimated - I need to confirm)
For a suitable DAC, I'd recommend the E1DA 9038S or 9038D, EarMen Eagle or EarMen Sparrow.
Can E1DA 9038D handle 470ohm headphone?
It will depend on the sensitivity of the headphones, but having enough voltage might be a problem.
Any plans to check out the Khadas Tea when those start shipping out next month? Haven’t seen any in-hand looks other than from SnazzyLabs and Z-Reviews, and I’m extremely curious of your thoughts on it (especially compared to these dongle DAC-amps).
No plans as yet. It all depends on who is stocking them and able to send me one to review
@@PassionforSound If nobody else is able to supply you one, there’s a solid chance I might be able to mail you mine once it arrives. You could keep it as long as you want since I have some other “on-the-go” options for now. 😄

@@PassionforSound I definitely look forward to watching.

Hidisz S3 pro vs fiio ka1
Thanks in advance
I don't have the KA1 so can't comment - sorry
Hmmm. Wish the S9 Pro was covered in this video. Amirn showed it was better than the E1DA and the EarMen products, which is why I bought it

Great review. What would be a desktop solution that would offer better value for money?
I don't know if there's a desktop system for the same price as a dongle that's better, but a low end stack like the E30/L30 from Topping would be comfortably better. I've also got the SMSL SU-6 and SH-6 coming soon which should be stronger and still very affordable

Hmmmm... That's pretty strange. Are you using a software like USB Audio Player Pro? Technically shouldn't be necessary, but worth asking

I'm yet to try the Apple dongle. I'm also curious about the IEM vs headphone usage proportions too
The Dongle Great Fondle
Great point! I totally forgot about the speakers on phones!! Thank you 😳🙂
Thanks!

I haven't tried the S9 Pro to be able to say. I do expect (based on my experiences with all EarMen products) that it will still be a bit better, but if the EMI issues are still happening then it's a concern.
Not worth the upgrade. I returned mine as the S9 pro was basically half the price and more consistent performance.
Mentioned this being about "budget" dongles and then said $59 is the cheapest one. That's all I needed to hear to know I don't need to watch this.
Fondle one more dongle you I will be forced to call your local authorities
Ha!
🤣
I had to say this, I held for long but no more. I can see the time and effort you are invested in making the video, but there needs serious improvements in your presentation style. I have watched many off your videos and felt this. It’s very difficult to concentrate on the video because of the monotonous feel. I suggest you to use more graphical comparisons, transitions, images, text and tables. It adds more engagement. I watched this video in 2x (15 mins) with pomodoro technique to stick with you(took the effort as I value your opinion). I believe you will take this feedback with a positive and friendly spirit.
I’ve never heard someone use the term fondle so much. Makes me a bit uncomfortable…
I know - sorry! 😁 You should have seen all the outtakes from my attempts to keep saying it 😉
Notice how he always elongates the vowel in the last word in the sentence. Same thing John Michael Godier does. Guess it's some sort of ASMR affectation, and once noticed is irritating AF.
It’s quite a pain listening to your voice. Sounds like someone pretending to be a ridiculously polite butler.
CIAO TI SCRIVO DALL' ITALIA MI PIACE IL TUO CANALE, IO VORREI UN TUO CONSIGLIO TRA 2 DAC: DAC FIIO Q3 MQA/DAC EARMEN SPARROW TU COSA COMPRERESTI? TI RINGRAZIO ANTICIPATAMENTE,ASPETTO UNA TUA RISPOSTA.
MQA) device
