      Miracle Grow for starting seedlings. The bargain stuff (Expert, BHG) is too coarse for seedlings, tends to compact, and dries out faster than the MG. This, BTW, is for outdoor plantings, but the same would probably hold true for indoor. I'll still buy the bargain stuff IF IT'S ON SALE and use it in the garden for compost. No way will I pay full price for it. Essentially, it's compost masquerading as potting mix. Otherwise I prefer to build my own soil using lawn waste and kitchen scraps, but this takes time. Again, this is for outdoor use. It would be too buggy if you tried to use it indoors, but there's nothing like it for growing a garden.

    I like to enhance my potting mix with a similar orchid mix that you used, but the one that has only bark, perlite and charcoal. I also love to add more perlite and leca. For the base potting mix I really like Ocean Forest by Fox Farm.

    Thanks for this video! It's very informative for beginners like me. Just repotted my sansevieria and potted my monstera cutting the other day (has grown lots of roots after being in water), using soil that was recommended to me by my local plant shop. However, the soil resembles the first soil you used in the mix, but even less "dry", and when I watered the plants no water at all came out from the drainage holes, so I'm guessing the soil is very water retaining. Your soil mix looks great and is what I wanted to go for before the plant shop recommendation, and now I'm thinking of repotting again using a better soil mix. My question: would your soil mix work for sansevierias and monsteras? Thanks!

    Thank you for that very detailed video. I really like to enhance my soil mixes too. Not long ago I repot some ficuses (Lyrata included) in a mix made of: regular potting soil, Coarse perlite, charcoal and wood chips.
    They seem doing fine but I am worried the mix is too draining maybe I should have added some coco peat. What do you think?
    For the moment I am out of Cactus soil and there seem to be a shortage in my area.
    For my succulents, ZZs and Snake plants, I usually use a cactus soil enhanced with coarse perlite and/or Pumice
    Before storing any left over mixes, I dry them completely in the summer sun for a couple of days. No need to air them out during Winter.
    I usually use Pro-Mix. That is the brand I see everywhere in Canadian stores. Sometimes they carry another brand but it is rare; at least where I live.

    Great idea using the plastic container to store left-over soil mix. We're getting ready to repot some snake plants, so that's probably what we'll do--prepare it ahead of time, and then repot without stopping to fix the mix. How long can you store soil mix in a container before the mushrooms sprout? Vague question I know, considering that storage will be affected by temp, humidity, light, and even time of year when the mushroom spores are out and about. For me, the mushrooms wouldn't be a show stopper. I'd simply scrape them off and use the potting mix. The spores are everywhere anyway. I'm not afraid of them, but better without than with just in case...

    Great video. I think your decursiva wants to be pulled back from the sun. When mine curled its leaves like that pulling it back helped.

    • @FelineJungle
      @FelineJungle  2 года назад +1

      Oh my decursiva is curling because it was sold to me planted horizontally. So the lowers are not used to being upright after i repositioned it haha. The newer ones are normal and not floppy.
