    No wonder they added a version in the Mario Movie, they’re too iconic that they have to include them in a good amount and that’s why we love them

      @Odyssey_Central the problem with the 64 remake being short is that, not only did they make it one “lap”, but they also shortened the track as in removed some parts. I would’ve preferred if they only did one of them, and I’d prefer not shortening the track, while also making you have to go around it 1 time. Or making it 2 laps, like Wario Colosseum. Otherwise it feels to short, and imo, in Mario Kart, long > short. And if they were to make it 3 laps whistle shortening the track, it would be okay because of the visuals, music, and especially normal and drift boosts.

    Rainbow Roads are so good largely in part because they all feel like a great representation of their respective game. With some courses, if you were to look at them, it might not be immediately obvious what game it’s from. With Rainbow Road, though, it’s very obvious what games they’re made for. 7 is the only one to use multiple sections instead of laps, Double Dash makes use of a cannon-like section in the first game to have those, Wii makes use of several trick opportunities, you get the picture.

  • @____David

    Great video, it was really interesting seeing you cover all of the Rainbow Roads, super excited to see a Bowser's Castle version!

    Tour also has its own Rainbow Road, it actually has two! RMX Rainbow Road 1 and RMX Rainbow Road 2, while it reuses assets from SNES Rainbow Road (as is the gimmick with the RMX courses), they still provide unique experiences. RMX Rainbow Road 1 has two massive gliding sections that intersect and RMX Rainbow Road 2 is like a cross between SNES Rainbow Road and Wii Mushroom Gorge. While they aren't fully original, they work as Tour's Rainbow Road in my opinion.

      I agree. It's too long with it being 6min. It's like driving around 7's RR 3 times, only that 7's is much harder and more fun to drive around more than once, as you do in some CT versions for MKWii.
      But I think that 8's version of N64 RR is too short with it only being one minute in 200cc (They also somehow downscaled it a little, since in MK6 it took 2min in 50cc for a lap and not only 1.5min). Should have made it 2 rounds, then it would be better lenghtwise. They did it like that for the CT for Wii and it worked well with the lenght.

    • @Gardetrace
      @Gardetrace 9 месяцев назад

      N64 Rainbow Road only sucks to the Zoomers whose attention spans are too short to appreciate this track is going for a marathon race. Also, be thankful there are guardrails everywhere because the ones who complain the track is too easy because of them are the same motherfuckers who would complain the track is too hard if they weren't there, especially since falling off the track is the most punishing in Mario Kart 64 than any other game. Mario Kart 8 butchered this track by changing the layout, removing the roaming Chain Chomps with easy to dodge bouncing ones, and making it a sectional track. If you thought the original was too long, the remake has the exact opposite problem. It becomes so short, the music doesn't have time to make a full loop before reaching the third section, so the remake can be best described as premature ejaculation. Nostalgia blind, deez nuts.

    I've always seen Mario Kart 8's rendition of n64 Rainbow Road as the intended final track. It's not like Mario Kart Wii, where the last retro course was Bowser's Castle because... some reason. One could argue it was to keep Mario Kart Wii's Rainbow Road from potentially being overshadowed, but I think with Mario Kart 8 they might've intended its new Rainbow Road to be the precursor Rainbow Road, before the grandest finale located in the retro cup. The train magically blowing its whistle as it chugs by in the sky... that's my favorite part of the course, I think.

    N64 Rainbow Road holds a place near and dear to my heart, even though I was a Wii Era gal. In middle school, one of the teachers had a couple old consoles students could use during breaks and special occasions. Obviously, that made his room very *popular.* To compensate, controllers had to be passed around after every Mario Kart race (the most common game played on both N64 and gamecube). Now, when you have a 15 minute break, and wanna make the most of it, what track are you gonna lean twoards? The longest.

    I especially appreciate how you discussed and ranked each RR from oldest to newest. Ordering it this way is one method that prevents number 2 from spoiling number 1, which happens with these "rank all items" lists when going by the (understandably) popular worst to best ordering.
    Another spoiler-reducing method I've seen, used in the NHL Draft Lottery, is that number 1 comes immediately after number 3. It feels less spoiled to have number 2 being implicitly given away compared to number 1.
    Any method of reducing spoilers in such ranked lists is something I always appreciate.

You're driving down a long, beautiful road, viewing the gorgeous light art of all the active participants from all the races you completed to get to where you are now (plus boo 👻). Even the theme feels ceremonial compared to the others. It's like a credits screen within the game's main content! That's just my take on it, though

    There is only one thing I would change about the N64 RR in the MK8 version. Give it two laps. I feel it's just a bit too short, and over all too soon. Having a second lap with the sped up final lap music the whole time would it a bit more staying power and a pump of adrenaline. If Baby Park can have seven laps, they can give Rainbow Road two.

    As someone who Religiously plays double dash still to this day, i can easily say its atleast A, i agree with the rest of your rankings and id think if you were to play it, youd agree with me. The layout and all the cool elements and gimmicks make easily A, however what pulls it all together is double dashes physics, truly a chaotic masterpiece that i personally would put up in S, but A would also be understandable. I hope you get the opportunity to play it and Double Dash someday

    I actually find it really funny that you mentioned the next Rainbow Road taking place over the sun, since during my speculation for Mario Kart 9 (before I realized Tour was 9, it's speculation for 10 now I guess), I had the idea that Rainbow Road was now a dual rainbow/lava theme, and Bowser's Castle was more similar to the Origami King, being less of a fortress and more of an actual castle that people live in

    What I would love to see for a future Rainbow Road…
    It takes place in a snowy, mountainous region with a pine tree forest. The light of the road reflecting off the snow at night could be visually stunning. The road weaves through the forest and goes up and down the mountains. There is a waterfall that goes over the road and that part would be in anti-gravity so the falling water would above the track. The road has the style from the movie and there are the northern lights in the sky.

    I'll be honest, Wii Rainbow Road, while being one of the best tracks ever, is not really that hard, and I got one tip for anyone struggling. Use any inside drift bike (except the Spear) with manual drifting! This makes every tight turn easier and it's easier to control.

  • @Bucketnetta
    @Bucketnetta 11 месяцев назад +1

    As someone who has played double dash the double dash rainbow road can be BRUTAL. The dd controls can be really slippery so it’s easy to fall off. But it is from double dash so it’s chaotic yet fun

    • @valeriebreidenstein8362
      @valeriebreidenstein8362 11 месяцев назад

      I agree. One time I drifted to hard and let go of the drift button to early and my speed boost shot me backwards of the 1. 180 degree turn. Or if you are shot down the Road because a bob omb or Yoshi Egg hit you at the spiral directly after you take a boost panel on the inside.
      Good memories

    I consider Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road to be the beginner's Rainbow Road.
    It introduces the concept of if you don't pay attention you fall off while still being beginner friendly to those who haven't played many racing games.
    Not everyone's cup of tea, but it does have it's share of fans with the music and character faces in lights being the best things about MK64 Rainbow Road.
    Maybe Nintendo made the track a little too safe in the eyes of many competitive MK racers.

    What I like about Wii U Rainbow Road is the world building behind it. We see ads from REXA there, which is a play on JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, which would mean that this one means Rainbow Exploration Agency.
    Which means that this Rainbow Road is a space station/satellite from REXA. This implies that they are looking for different Rainbow Roads out there, and this Rainbow Road is them trying to replicate the more magical Rainbow Roads, most likely for scientific study.

    I've always wanted a GBA remake too. Like you said, they can't bring back the bounce pads, but I did have some ideas for that.
    On corners, they can make Wii style halfpipes. I think for the narrow shortcut it would also be cool if they kept the course in antigrav, then on the turn approaching the shortcut they add 3 antigrav spin boosters and have it so hitting all 3 opens up a glider ramp in that area (like on Hyrule Circuit). The glider section then has booster rings which, if navigated through skillfully, will let you glide across and skip the last turn.

    16:30 All of these bumps besides the corner cut are actually there in the original, they're just removed in Time Trials for some reason. Hell in SMK there are actually a few bumps on the first long straightaway too.
    SMK removing most of the jump pads and boost ramps that aren't necessary to complete the track makes actually trying to play them to see how they stack up way more annoying than it needs to be.

    I know your mention of there being a rainbow road on the sun in a future game was meant as a joke. But similar to how Mario Kart 8’s Rainbow Road is themed around a space station, I think it would be cool to have the next Rainbow Road take place and be themed around a Dyson Sphere (a hypothetical megastructure that encompasses a star, which would be used to harness the energy of said star).
