I think it’s interesting that Gretel’s song hardly mentions her brother, and you would have to hear his song to even know she had one and their relationship . Gretel actually *does* mention her brother and expresses that she does not like him. "You're probably going the other way, so give a smother to my brother when you see him, okay?" Based on context from previous lines, "the other way" seems to refer to hell, showing how much she dislikes him, even expecting to end up in hell, even if _this_ song seems to point to him going to heaven.

I surprised how no one had brought up Hansel’s design. It is a rat with rings, another name for a pigeon. In some people’s eyes, they’re easy to overlook. To others, they can be an unwanted sight. They’re seen as dirty, useless and diseased, when in reality they’re gentle and clean (thus the part of him that’s appealingly sweet)

This feels like hurting yourself for attention and affection. The end is suicide, and why isn’t everyone happy? They never cared anyways. “My name etched on a rock,” the grave, “all I wanted was to talk” all I wanted was your affection, and, to talk. If I’m correct then this is pretty relatable

Oh, heads up people think Gretel survived the stabbing!!! This is due to the fact that Hansel disappears as he finishes his final living verse, and Gretel remains on screen for the whole song.
I just realized this fact matches the fact that gretels death is quiet, only at night and it’s lonely there, but at Hansel’s funeral its crowded with attention there.

I think the design of the character on screen represents how Hansel feels about himself in the song. His sister gets all the attention so he starts doing stupid and dangerous things, all to get noticed by people. In this way he is a clown (red nose), or a jester (the jester hat). He talks about things like "breathing fire", like dragons (dragon wings). I'm sure there are other similarities so if you find any, just tell me I'd love to know!! :) (THIS SONG IS AWESOME BTW!!!!!)
He has a rat's tail legs and whiskers which might represent him feeling like a lab rat doing dangerous stuff so others don't have too. Lab rats are unnamed and forgotten for the most part so that might also be him feeling like he's being unannounced doing all these dangerous stunts. I'm not really good at making theories
2:42 I think I finally understand what this line means. The “green luscious island” he’s referring to is the ground beneath him when he’s high up preforming his dangerous stunts, and the “diamonds” that cover it are actually lights from houses and buildings and such.
I know most people take this for just a portrayal of Hansel the character, but as someone who lost their s.o to suicide, this song hits hard. Very well written! makes me cry a lot
Here's an interesting little motif I noticed: In Gretel's song, she says this: "When I say green, you think of cheese, but in my mind I'm picturing fresh tangerines". The cheese could represent death and decay, whereas the fresh tangerines could represent life and hope. In Hansel's song, he mentions "green alligators" (wishing they had eaten Gretel) and a "green luscious island" (not sure about this one). He also says "just like flies are drawn to the rotting cheese, are sadists attracted to misery, in this case it's another word for me". Seeing as Gretel explicitly says in her song "no, I'm not a masochist" and sadism and masochism go hand in hand, I think this implies Hansel sees himself as a masochist and sees Gretel as a sadist, who enjoys watching him suffer. This is all probably a bit of a stretch, but I figured I'd share it anyway! Edit: A couple of things I missed-- In one line, Hansel quite literally says "though pain's rather tasty." How did I miss that? Green is the color of envy. Gretel's hat is green, and Hansel's fur is green as well. In the beginning of Gretel's song, it sounds like she's playing pretend, maybe as a child, or reflecting how her song sounds very childish. Is Hansel the older brother? It sounds like they used to get along, too: "will you guide me?" Says Gretel, and Hansel says "yes, of course." But also, she says "was I born to be tortured?" As she says this, a smaller, quieter voice sings along to this. Definitely Hansel! There's so much more I could speculate and theorize on, but I'm trying to keep this comment focused to prevent it becoming too long and unreadable. Feel free to add your ideas in the replies :)
If we took this to consideration, cheese rotting is like a rotting corpse, and flies do attract to corpses as do other things. The line would then be transcribed to “Just like flies are attracted to rotting corpses, sadists are attracted to misery; in this case, it’s *another word for me.”* Another word can mean anything, but who exteriorly enjoys pain other than… a Masochist? Green Alligators can easily mean dead or fresh alligators, which both sound weird if they were to eat her.

One thing I don't know if anyone's mentioned yet is that Hansel's fading is MUCH quicker than Gretel's. I think this is a brilliant allusion to the differences about their deaths; Gretel was left to slowly bleed out after getting stabbed, while Hansel's death was a much quicker affair. Both got what they wanted in the end though because of it. Hansel's death was too quick for anyone to do anything to save him, so he was surrounded by people caring about him for the first time, and Gretel got to be quietly alone for the first time. Very tragic, beautiful story telling.

5:16 “funny how much more you notice something you can’t see” hit me hard and is so true. Hansel was basically saying how he was jealous of how much attention Gretel was getting so he committed because he was tired of how little attention he gets. A lot of people came to his funeral but not a lot of people talked to him when he was still alive. This line means that people never gave him a lot of attention until his death and funeral because deaths are more serious.
My interpretation! Hansel wasn’t noticed much, so he started doing dangerous stunts! Chocking on stardust, juggling knifes, swallowing swords, the last stunt jumping from a high place thinking leaves and nature would break his fall-it didn’t. I like how the background shape matches the characters. Hansel has a star, he always just wanted to have attention like a pop star and Gretel had a heart, she just wanted someone to love her The flamingos are seen as goofy with their long necks and skinny legs, Hansel would look goofy just so someone would look. In Gretel's she has bugs, bugs are seen as disgusting and weird. She also had roses(?), Roses are seen as romantic, again, she wanted someone to love her and not treat her like a punching bag.

There’s such a stark difference in content with Hansel and Gretel’s songs. If you only watch Hansel’s, you’d think Gretel is a attention seeker who purposely takes the spotlight from her brother who needs help, but if you watch Gretel’s you’d see the attention she’s given is because people think she’s a freak due to her condition. I find it fitting that Hansel turned into a ghost (him being able to see his own funeral and even the memorial they made for him) while Gretel ended up in Hell with the monsters (Referencing that she’s somewhere with cannibals, and in the beginning of her song she asks why she’s in Hell). Both siblings wanting opposite things, when this all could’ve been avoided had they just looked towards each other for comfort. That's detailed and you made me replay the song quite a few times, aswell as Gretel's song to match them, Hansel uses Gretel as a reason he is suffering, meanwhile Gretel does not use Hansel as a suffering reason. @@Gore_Fluffs. Yeah, His eyebags and closed eyes represent his sleep deprivation, i personally think its cause all of his stunts are tiring. Also other things about his design is his clown nose and jester hat, seen as a "silly" or "stupid" (me personally i love clowns a jesters) and i could see him using those to get his attention. Also the way he walks is like he's struggling to go on. He also walks like this, messy and loud, which could be seen as like a "I want attention or someone to look at me" walk. As for Gretel she walks very neatly and together, like shes trying to avoid the attention. She has many spots in her design as well, on her hat and body, to reference her body spots. Gretel seems more put together and neat while Hansel is more loud and messy.

It's the "I *think* I hate her" that seals the deal for me that Hanzel doesn't actually hate his sister. Resentful and envious? Yeah. But he doesn't hate her, if at the least because she's one of the few people who have paid attention to him in the past.

I think it’s not him realizing he’s dying, but him trying to convince others of it. His sister Gretel had a physical illness so people constantly had their attention on her. The just red paint, babe this ain’t pretend” and “maybe you would believe me then” is in regards to others dismissing his illness just because his sister has a more visible one

I had just realized that typically people who are touch starved enjoy the feeling of pain as it lets them feel, which leads to a path of self harm. The level of thought and detail in this song is incredible
@@bioemiliano I don't speak for every touch starved person, but from what I've read, plus *real life people I've met who have touch starvation have explained to me,* because of the lack of feeling from another human they've commonly had pasts or even still have habits that include harming themselves from stress - or just as something they've always done to cope. Hot showers that burn, digging their nails into their own fingers, letting their pet bite/claw at them, etc. TLDR: no.

When my cat was around at my home (he left to another house,) I would let him prick my skin through my shirt because it didn’t matter, he was pretty warm and made me feel comfortable. I liked hearing the purring of the cat. I also really love hot showers, they’re one of my main sources of comfort. I’d like to think I have a tolerance to very hot water because of the times i’ve accidentally touched hot glue that was not dry yet. Quite often I tie a jacket around my rib cage whenever going to sleep to feel calm and relaxed.

ive noticed that hansel fades faster than gretel, and im thinking maybe thats how long it took for them to die, hansel died fast, too fast for anyone to do anything meanwhile gretel on the otherhand died slowly, she was left to slowly die after being stabbed, but the two both got what they wanted in the end, hansel got the attention he had been yearning for and gretel had got to be left alone
The lines "With myself I must play in this game of charades, 'cause there's no one to speak to the things I've got in my brain" just relates so much to me. Sometimes I find myself thinking "why doesn't anyone check up on me? Why don't my parents realize I'm probably not okay?" I've probably shown outward signs of something wrong with me, and yet I keep playing this game of charades to try and get everyone to understand that I'm not okay.
(Copy pasted from my comment on the gretel song) My own theory of hansel and gretel is: Gretel has been ridiculed and bullied all her life being "ugly" seemingly from an condition she cannot control. She had attention all the time due to her being the punching bag of everyone. She later on at night got stabbed by a man who go scared of her, killing her. Her brother on the other hand, Hansel, has never gotten any sort of this attention, no matter how hard he tried. He envied his sister for getting attention, even if it was negative, because he couldn't even have someone look over to him for a second. He then started to get into more and more dangerous stunts, trying to make people to look over to no avail. At one point though, he went insane in one of his stunts and died in the end, finally getting attention in the form of a funeral.
It's tragic, because there's always a "what if?" Y'know? What if people just treated them even a little better? Would they have suffered in the end? But this is how it ends, with tragedy.
"How I long, for your arms again." Shows how much Hansel actually misses Gretel. Even though, je always rejected love from Gretel. "So give a smother to my brother when you see him, okay?" Shows how much Gretel wasnt being fake, just as Hansel had thought she was. Now they both miss eachother.
This song shows how Hansel is jealous of the attention gretel is getting sue to her looks, this causes a mental breakdown and for him to commit suicide. The song Gretel shows no hate to her brother apart from the fact that he isn’t getting negative attention. She’s insecure about her looks and people making fun of it, makes her feel unworthy and she leaves home after being disowned. Both songs show a story that counters each other and I am here for it ❤
To sum it up What hansel wants: attention and friends What Gretel wants: love and to be stopped being bullied How both died: Gretel got stabbed at night by a guy who got scared. Hansel died from commiting a dangerous act involving falling from a building to gain attention. Extra stuff: Hansel had a star in there backround because they want to be the star like a popular person Gretel has a rose, rose=love or romance so it equals love and romance like she wanted One point in the song it seems like Hansel and Gretel started a conversation if you listen carefully.
Pretty interesting how Hansel keeps mentioning sweet things, candy, and corpses! Makes me think of the difference in how his teeth are yellow and Gretel's are white. In the actual story, the witch gave Hansel lots of food to fatten him up but Gretel was starved. If I remember correctly, she also helped cook most of the meals, which might be why Gretel mentions baking a lot in her songs.
I think the lines “Just red paint, Babes, this ain’t pretend.” And “I might lose a leg or a head, would you believe me then?” Shows that his disease is mental and therefore hard for some to understand, especially gretel, who has a physical disease and therefore gets more attention for it, which Hansel wants because nobody notices his.
I love the detail that Hansel's crown is a perfect translation to how they were treated. They were treated like a joke so that's possibly why it's a jester hat, then when they're finally gone they finally got their crown. Even though it's too late.
I love how at the end the "finally a party just for me" is referencing to his funeral, and how hes surprised everyone is crying while hes quite happy. Then the ending line, "A whole garden of flowers and my name etched on a rock, all this could've been avoided all I wanted was to talk. Now I've been appointed as your new king I decree that its too late to start caring about me!" Quite literally saying, "You only ever care for me when I'm no longer around to know." Which I personally love. This is probs my fav sodikken song

What i think is extremely clever is that throughout this entire music video, you see the same exact walking cycle of the same exact character that, even whilst they contrast with the background so much and are desperately trying to be seen, you end up with your eyes wandering away from the character and onto other parts of the backgrounds. but when the character disappears, you NOTICE that, and it coincides with the verse about their funeral, which has the line "Funny how much more you notice something that you can't see." extremely fucking clever. Bravo.

Having listened to this song and Gretel's song over 20 times, I realized that they are very obviously different. First, hansel craves attention to the point of killing himself, whereas Gretel probably dies at night by being stabbed, thus not causing a scene. Second, is more of a theory, hansel says " just red paint babe this ain't pretend. " and gretel says " with red gloves all you touch certainly will get marked up, i infact, in light of this, became your painting canvas. " which made me think of this scenario where gretel had a incident where she was painting with someone, had paint splashed or someone had just tried to mess her clothes up with red paint and hansel thought she was faking getting hurt FOR attention, and just before gretel said those lines she said " why would i enjoy this? no i'm not a masochist. " it feels like she's saying that directly at hansel ( also makes me believe he viewed the two of them as sadists / masochists. ) Thirdly, i think hansel had an active hatred for gretel because of the lines " i wish those green alligators had ate her " that and because of the theory that gretel's flower background was linked to him buying flowers that were thrown away, but what i'm more focused on is that gretel doesn't seem to have much against hansel, someone may say oh she said give a smother ( which means strangle / suffocate ) to my brother, but i think she kind of means to look after him when she's gone, which is another point, fourth, i personally believe that Gretel died first, which is because when she says it was time for her to fly away she mentions, like i said, giving a smother to hansel, and hansel says how i long for your arms again BUT a different alternative is that she meant that hansel died first which also links up, put this together, gretel song says give a smother to my brother when you see him okay, yea yea i said that 3 times now, but HANSEL, at the end of his song says it's too late to start caring about me. sorry if i made anyone sit through this entire ramble...

I feel like this song is about a child who is neglected, in some way shape, or form, and dies. Their spirit sees everyone at their funeral, morning them and disregarding the reason they're dead. I.E ''Should've shown love before I became a piece of meat''. They basically recap to somebody about their life and how everyone loved their sister more. This has to be my favorite song out of the bunch, aside from Redmagettion.

Listening on these 2 songs on repeat, I like to think that at the end the two admit that they do somewhat like each other. Gretel: “Sike! This song has me in tears because it really does represent my current mental state. At school, people dont even talk to me. For years, I was alone, and only recently have I made a few friends. I feel like I dont really matter to them, and sometimes I wonder how they would feel if they could physically see my pain and I want to open up to them, but in my years of loneliness I've learned to repress that pain and keep it to myself. This song reminds me of this Reddit post I saw Trigger warning: small mention child abuse. There was this kid in OP's class, he didn't have any friends so he would let kids hurt him so he would have people he could call friends. One day the teacher found out and chewed out the kids "friends" . The kid begged the teacher to not get them in trouble, because they were what he called friends. The teacher asked him to pull up his sleeves and revealed bloody whip marks, burns, bruises you name it all over his arms. He said that he was used to it and was happy about it. It was revealed later on that he was placed in a foster home after it was found out he was beaten at home for as long as he could remember
We tried everything, from trying to convince the bullies, to going to the teacher council several times, to a small counterattack (that just gained me some names because I'm the idiot that exposed himself), but nothing. The teacher said "if he doesn't want to leave them, we can't do nothing"

This is kind of relatable. Nobody seems to care, or even look your way while you're suffering and hurting yourself, but as soon as you actually die all of a sudden they feel bad.
I love this song! The story is amazing- I’m not great at finding and explaining symbolism but here’s some small things I found that I haven’t seen pointed out: ‘I like bike riding, it’s oh so exiting!’ turns into ‘I like bike riding, it can be exiting’ subtly showing how depression can lower your interest in doing things you love The yellow teeth on the rat character shown might be related to not taking care of yourself, having no motivation to do even simple things like brushing your teeth The bruised eye on the character is likely related to his self-injury and his dangerous stunts, and was likely gained from one of these stunts ‘If there’s a party today, it’s not coming my way’ - once again showing how he barely gets any attention, and that this is generally expected for him at this point. This also likely has a literal meaning, as he probably wasn’t invited to many parties in real life either. I just wanted to point this out because he describes his own funeral as ‘finally, a party just for me’, so I thought that was neat. He sacrificed himself for attention and never regretted it, he even enjoyed his funeral and thought of it as a ‘party’ ‘Lower the bar cause I’m choking on stardust’ - the ‘lower the bar’ part may be showing how he was content on doing small, if still self-injurious, stunts for attention, but the people who watch him urge him to keep doing more and more dangerous things, ‘choking on stardust’ meaning that he was addicted to the popularity and didn’t want to give up the attention no matter what, even if it killed him. Most of the other stuff seems to already be explained in other comments, I’m not great at this so I just decided to poke at some small details

I really like this analysis! Another way the "Lower the bar 'cause I'm choking on stardust" could be a sort-of exaggeration, with him expressing that he has to go to such great lengths to get attention even though it's hurting him, which is kinda backed up by the next line; "becoming a carcass, though pain's rather tasty". It could be read as him beating himself down, although he's alright with that if it means getting attention. The second part could also be read as him being a masochist and just enjoying the pain of all his stunts.
adding onto this, to my horror i just realized that hansel's bent face shape isn't his natural one. his face is broken, and his nose is left to hang limp from it.

"those green alligators, I wish they had ate her," sounds like a young kid misunderstanding/misremembering the phrase 'Crocodile tears'. Almost like the hate he feels for Gretel was taught to him by someone (dad likely) and he harrasses her just like everyone else because that's what he thinks is normal and acceptable, and he desperately wants to be accepted by ANYONE. Doing so he drives Gretel away. The only person who'd likely give him that attention and love he needs.

After listening to both songs it seems as though Gretel is most likely struggling with her own self destructive behaviors (probably an eating disorder with all the references to her low self image, food-related imagery through most of the song, and particularly the line "they made me eat ice") but when others didn't take her problems seriously and assumed she only did them for attention ("that big facial blister, her pity getting scheme") she began to lash out at Hansel and take it out on him, driving him to the events of this song. They both seem to have a similar message, actually! One is about receiving a constant stream of negative attention and one is about receiving no attention at all, both resulting in people who deeply resent eachother and feel as though no one sees them as a real person. Gretel is obsessed with validation and feels like she needs to perfect her image to receive it, and regurgitates the hatred she receives on a regular basis at Hansel, who only wants any kind of acknowledgement at all and feels the only way his existence will make a difference is through an act of self-violence. He doesn't feel like he has anyone to reach out to and is expected to keep his emotions to himself which only leads to a buildup of them. He has no healthy outlets so he develops a maladaptive coping mechanism, in this case, self harm. They're both destroying themselves for others and at the same time downplaying eachother which creates a toxic cycle which only ends when.. well. yeah.

I think it’s interesting that Gretel’s song hardly mentions her brother, and you would have to hear his song to even know she had one and their relationship . I surprised how no one had brought up Hansel’s design. It is a rat with rings, another name for a pigeon. In some people’s eyes, they’re easy to overlook. To others, they can be an unwanted sight. They’re seen as dirty, useless and diseased, when in reality they’re gentle and clean (thus the part of him that’s appealingly sweet)

I think the design of the character on screen represents how Hansel feels about himself in the song. His sister gets all the attention so he starts doing stupid and dangerous things, all to get noticed by people. In this way he is a clown (red nose), or a jester (the jester hat). He talks about things like "breathing fire", like dragons (dragon wings). I'm sure there are other similarities so if you find any, just tell me I'd love to know!! :)

Here's an interesting little motif I noticed:
In Gretel's song, she says this:
"When I say green, you think of cheese, but in my mind I'm picturing fresh tangerines". The cheese could represent death and decay, whereas the fresh tangerines could represent life and hope.
In Hansel's song, he mentions "green alligators" (wishing they had eaten Gretel) and a "green luscious island" (not sure about this one). He also says "just like flies are drawn to the rotting cheese, are sadists attracted to misery, in this case it's another word for me". Seeing as Gretel explicitly says in her song "no, I'm not a masochist" and sadism and masochism go hand in hand, I think this implies Hansel sees himself as a masochist and sees Gretel as a sadist, who enjoys watching him suffer.
This is all probably a bit of a stretch, but I figured I'd share it anyway!

In one line, Hansel quite literally says "though pain's rather tasty." How did I miss that?
Green is the color of envy. Gretel's hat is green, and Hansel's fur is green as well.
In the beginning of Gretel's song, it sounds like she's playing pretend, maybe as a child, or reflecting how her song sounds very childish. Is Hansel the older brother? It sounds like they used to get along, too: "will you guide me?" Says Gretel, and Hansel says "yes, of course." But also, she says "was I born to be tortured?" As she says this, a smaller, quieter voice sings along to this. Definitely Hansel!
There's so much more I could speculate and theorize on, but I'm trying to keep this comment focused to prevent it becoming too long and unreadable. Feel free to add your ideas in the replies :)

If we took this to consideration, cheese rotting is like a rotting corpse, and flies do attract to corpses as do other things. The line would then be transcribed to “Just like flies are attracted to rotting corpses, sadists are attracted to misery; in this case, it’s *another word for me.”* Another word can mean anything, but who exteriorly enjoys pain other than… a Masochist? Green Alligators can easily mean dead or fresh alligators, which both sound weird if they were to eat her.
I really like this comment it pointed out to me some pretty interesting connections between the songs and made me appreciate them more so thank you and in my opinion the 'no, I'm not a masochist' is her response to her brother thinking that she likes the attention she gets

One thing I don't know if anyone's mentioned yet is that Hansel's fading is MUCH quicker than Gretel's. I think this is a brilliant allusion to the differences about their deaths; Gretel was left to slowly bleed out after getting stabbed, while Hansel's death was a much quicker affair. Both got what they wanted in the end though because of it. Hansel's death was too quick for anyone to do anything to save him, so he was surrounded by people caring about him for the first time, and Gretel got to be quietly alone for the first time. Very tragic, beautiful story telling.

5:16 “funny how much more you notice something you can’t see” hit me hard and is so true. Hansel was basically saying how he was jealous of how much attention Gretel was getting so he committed because he was tired of how little attention he gets. A lot of people came to his funeral but not a lot of people talked to him when he was still alive. This line means that people never gave him a lot of attention until his death and funeral because deaths are more serious.
My interpretation! Hansel wasn’t noticed much, so he started doing dangerous stunts! Chocking on stardust, juggling knifes, swallowing swords, the last stunt jumping from a high place thinking leaves and nature would break his fall-it didn’t. He’s happy he died because now he has more attention than when he was really alive
I like how the background shape matches the characters. Hansel has a star, he always just wanted to have attention like a pop star and Gretel had a heart, she just wanted someone to love her
The flamingos are seen as goofy with their long necks and skinny legs, Hansel would look goofy just so someone would look. In Gretel's she has bugs, bugs are seen as disgusting and weird. She also had roses(?), Roses are seen as romantic, again, she wanted someone to love her and not treat her like a punching bag.

There’s such a stark difference in content with Hansel and Gretel’s songs. If you only watch Hansel’s, you’d think Gretel is a attention seeker who purposely takes the spotlight from her brother who needs help, but if you watch Gretel’s you’d see the attention she’s given is because people think she’s a freak due to her condition. I find it fitting that Hansel turned into a ghost (him being able to see his own funeral and even the memorial they made for him) while Gretel ended up in Hell with the monsters (Referencing that she’s somewhere with cannibals, and in the beginning of her song she asks why she’s in Hell). Both siblings wanting opposite things, when this all could’ve been avoided had they just looked towards each other for comfort. Hansel would’ve understood the reason for Gretel’s attention and even would’ve gotten attention from her, While Gretel could be around someone who doesn’t view her as a monster and instead a person.

@@Gore_Fluffs. Yeah, His eyebags and closed eyes represent his sleep deprivation, i personally think its cause all of his stunts are tiring. Also other things about his design is his clown nose and jester hat, seen as a "silly" or "stupid" (me personally i love clowns a jesters) and i could see him using those to get his attention. Also the way he walks is like he's struggling to go on. He also walks like this, messy and loud, which could be seen as like a "I want attention or someone to look at me" walk. As for Gretel she walks very neatly and together, like shes trying to avoid the attention. She has many spots in her design as well, on her hat and body, to reference her body spots. Gretel seems more put together and neat while Hansel is more loud and messy.

It's the "I *think* I hate her" that seals the deal for me that Hanzel doesn't actually hate his sister. Resentful and envious? Yeah. But he doesn't hate her, if at the least because she's one of the few people who have paid attention to him in the past.

When my cat was around at my home (he left to another house,) I would let him prick my skin through my shirt because it didn’t matter, he was pretty warm and made me feel comfortable. I liked hearing the purring of the cat. I also really love hot showers, they’re one of my main sources of comfort. I’d like to think I have a tolerance to very hot water because of the times i’ve accidentally touched hot glue that was not dry yet. Quite often I tie a jacket around my rib cage whenever going to sleep to feel calm and relaxed.

My own theory of hansel and gretel is:
Gretel has been ridiculed and bullied all her life being "ugly" seemingly from an condition she cannot control. She had attention all the time due to her being the punching bag of everyone. She later on at night got stabbed by a man who go scared of her, killing her.
Her brother on the other hand, Hansel, has never gotten any sort of this attention, no matter how hard he tried. He envied his sister for getting attention, even if it was negative, because he couldn't even have someone look over to him for a second. He then started to get into more and more dangerous stunts, trying to make people to look over to no avail. At one point though, he went insane in one of his stunts and died in the end, finally getting attention in the form of a funeral.

Ties a bit into the candy house theme of the original Hansel and Gretel story. Pretty cool attention to detail!

Having listened to this song and Gretel's song over 20 times, I realized that they are very obviously different. First, hansel craves attention to the point of killing himself, whereas Gretel probably dies at night by being stabbed, thus not causing a scene. Second, is more of a theory, hansel says " just red paint babe this ain't pretend. a story of one sibling getting attention, and the other, being basically left to rot not just by the parents but also by the 'village' sound. Doing all to try to get the smallest attention, resulting in a quote, "self-injury spree" resorting to swallowing blades, juggling sharp objects, playing with fire, bike riding(presumably doing unsafe actions while on the bike), cutting, etc. All things to try to get love and affection. “ How I long for your arms again”. until one day he falls off his bike, “Autumn leaves failed to break my fall. Sticks and stones didn't care at all” by the lyrics and the ones after this the fall or crash was fatel.” Skin and bones decorate the walls, Think that's everything I can recall '' possibly death by head injury. Saing “Finally, a party just for me” just showed that he made his dream come true, and with the only method he knew how. Saing “Like your brain's hard drives just installed sympathy, indicating that they only care about someone once they're dead. Saying that they quote “If ya cared that much, should've showed love 'fore I became a piece of meat.” and ending with, “All this could've been avoided, all I wanted was to talk.”
This message, when understood right, or not understood at all is incredibly real, and hits too close to home for some like myself.

Trigger warning: small mention child abuse.
There was this kid in OP's class, he didn't have any friends so he would let kids hurt him so he would have people he could call friends. One day the teacher found out and chewed out the kids "friends" . The kid begged the teacher to not get them in trouble, because they were what he called friends. The teacher asked him to pull up his sleeves and revealed bloody whip marks, burns, bruises you name it all over his arms. He said that he was used to it and was happy about it.
It was revealed later on that he was placed in a foster home after it was found out he was beaten at home for as long as he could remember

There was someone who was abused basically daily back in high school, always by the same 2 people; no matter what we did he wouldn't leave them...
We tried everything, from trying to convince the bullies, to going to the teacher council several times, to a small counterattack (that just gained me some names because I'm the idiot that exposed himself), but nothing.
The teacher said "if he doesn't want to leave them, we can't do nothing"

This is kind of relatable. Nobody seems to care, or even look your way while you're suffering and hurting yourself, but as soon as you actually die all of a sudden they feel bad.

I love this song! The story is amazing- I’m not great at finding and explaining symbolism but here’s some small things I found that I haven’t seen pointed out:
‘I like bike riding, it’s oh so exiting!’ turns into ‘I like bike riding, it can be exiting’ subtly showing how depression can lower your interest in doing things you love
The yellow teeth on the rat character shown might be related to not taking care of yourself, having no motivation to do even simple things like brushing your teeth
The bruised eye on the character is likely related to his self-injury and his dangerous stunts, and was likely gained from one of these stunts
‘If there’s a party today, it’s not coming my way’ - once again showing how he barely gets any attention, and that this is generally expected for him at this point. This also likely has a literal meaning, as he probably wasn’t invited to many parties in real life either. I just wanted to point this out because he describes his own funeral as ‘finally, a party just for me’, so I thought that was neat. He sacrificed himself for attention and never regretted it, he even enjoyed his funeral and thought of it as a ‘party’
‘Lower the bar cause I’m choking on stardust’ - the ‘lower the bar’ part may be showing how he was content on doing small, if still self-injurious, stunts for attention, but the people who watch him urge him to keep doing more and more dangerous things, ‘choking on stardust’ meaning that he was addicted to the popularity and didn’t want to give up the attention no matter what, even if it killed him.
Most of the other stuff seems to already be explained in other comments, I’m not great at this so I just decided to poke at some small details

I really like this analysis! Another way the "Lower the bar 'cause I'm choking on stardust" could be a sort-of exaggeration, with him expressing that he has to go to such great lengths to get attention even though it's hurting him, which is kinda backed up by the next line; "becoming a carcass, though pain's rather tasty". It could be read as him beating himself down, although he's alright with that if it means getting attention. The second part could also be read as him being a masochist and just enjoying the pain of all his stunts.
adding onto this, to my horror i just realized that hansel's bent face shape isn't his natural one. his face is broken, and his nose is left to hang limp from it.
The vocal contrast and control in this song is fucking amazing
i'd been wanting to get better at singing for a while when i discovered this song. this made my singing improve by a ton as well as help me become more confident, and i'm so grateful for that! my favorite parts are "autumn leaves failed to break my fall, sticks and stones didn't care at all" and "a whole garden of flowers and my name etched on a rock" to "that it's too late to start caring about me". i'm not sure if anyone will end up reading this, but yeah :)

I would really like to see a movie or tv series based on these two characters (as long as it’s not like a cheap, cheesy blockbuster). I think if done right it could be one of the best and saddest movies on the planet.
Soddiken is making a cartoon but it doesn't really focus on any of these song characters it's more about this cat person oc they have. But would be cool if the rat and dino creatures we see in hansel and Gretel come back and appear around.

Almost like the hate he feels for Gretel was taught to him by someone (dad likely) and he harrasses her just like everyone else because that's what he thinks is normal and acceptable, and he desperately wants to be accepted by ANYONE. Doing so he drives Gretel away. The only person who'd likely give him that attention and love he needs.

After listening to both songs it seems as though Gretel is most likely struggling with her own self destructive behaviors (probably an eating disorder with all the references to her low self image, food-related imagery through most of the song, and particularly the line "they made me eat ice") but when others didn't take her problems seriously and assumed she only did them for attention ("that big facial blister, her pity getting scheme") she began to lash out at Hansel and take it out on him, driving him to the events of this song.
They both seem to have a similar message, actually! One is about receiving a constant stream of negative attention and one is about receiving no attention at all, both resulting in people who deeply resent eachother and feel as though no one sees them as a real person.
Gretel is obsessed with validation and feels like she needs to perfect her image to receive it, and regurgitates the hatred she receives on a regular basis at Hansel, who only wants any kind of acknowledgement at all and feels the only way his existence will make a difference is through an act of self-violence. He doesn't feel like he has anyone to reach out to and is expected to keep his emotions to himself which only leads to a buildup of them. He has no healthy outlets so he develops a maladaptive coping mechanism, in this case, self harm. They're both destroying themselves for others and at the same time downplaying eachother which creates a toxic cycle which only ends when.. well. yeah.
