  • Modley by Klevgränd Produktion aka KLEVGR is a modular delay that, in my opinion, everybody needs! This Audio Unit plugin is a serious contender for one of my future top lists and if you want to know why then I suggest you watch this video. We'll be diving into how Modley works, what it sounds like and what you can do with it. Lets go!

    I like very much the way you test the apps. Your videos are the first ones that I tend to see best when I am on the hunt for a new app. It is clear to me that many times you are hired to do the videos, but I find your opinions quite unbiased and educated, one important thing that I look for. Also those paid videos where on my terms because I refuse to be controlled in some whay.M. I make videos because I want to make them and I make them the way I want to make them period.

    I like this app and I was trying it out yesterday with a Korg Kaosillator pro running through it. I got some really spacey sounds out of it and I'm impressed. The sounds I was able to make reminded of a Hawkwind gig I went to in 1973 when I was a teenager. I'm not a guitarist but I do own a McNally Strumstick (it's a 3 string dulcimer with an electric pickup, and is very easy to play) and a cigar box guitar so I'm going to try putting those through it as well.

    My only application is live dub, so I am all about the interface. Clarity and ease of interaction is crucial. That's what makes the Holderness apps so good.
    I like where they're going with Modley, but it needs some things. A couple of XY pads, for starters. I'd like to see an envelope follower. That would want some sort of side chain routing. Modley could approach Flux:FX, if Flux wasn't buggy and abandoned. I can see it replacing a number of effects that I keep slotted in AUM for that one thing I want, like FS Freezeverb, frekvens, or Echo Pitch

    This is a great app. Everyone should definitely have it. So much more than a delay. Calling it a delay is deceiving. You definitely need other delays because, as you said, they all have their own flavour. It depends what you want. It it's crazy distortion of various kinds, this baby can do it. If you want something subtle then maybe a normal delay might be the answer. What I just said is obvious. Nithing brilliant there. Haha. Have fun.

    This app REALLY looks interesting & useful. Especially since there are all these magical new spacey granular guitar effects coming out. But Jakob I would love to see you compare it to Sugar Bytes Turnado. Another kind of modular app that also lets you build & manipulate just about any kind of combined effect(s).

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад +1

      I can see why some people draw similarities between Modley and Turnado due to their modular nature. However I wouldn’t put hem in the same category since Modley is a delay with a main delay module that cannot be turned off. Turnado in the other hand, has been built to be a completely modular performance effect beast. There’s no set effect in Turnado, everything can be bypassed and switched out. Plus the touch interfaces really is a huge point with Turnado. I would never use these apps in the same manner basically.

      @Apuat 5 лет назад

      Ahhhhhhh good point. Thanks man keep up the great work.

  • @kunstssst

    Problem with this delay is I can only use one instance comfortably without blowing my cpu. With say, Kosmonaut I can have five instances very comfortably. Modley is great and sounds awesome. For my workflow, it will see less use as lighter delays will take over. I’d also seriously recommend Turnado...

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад

      Yes it is very cpu hungry. 😅 Now I wouldn’t compare Kosmonaut to this app because Modley is modular. The modular approach and being able to move modules around gives Modley a unique ability to drastically change the way that sound is being processed. Kosmonaut will always have the same audio signal routing and that can’t be changed. Instead of arguing that Kosmonaut can do the same thing as Modley, I’d argue that it would be more fair to say that Modley can do the same thing that Kosmonaut can and more.

    Sorry man, gotta disagree on the must-buy recommend - It's cool as a "studio" plugin, but for *live* work it doesn't hit the mark. At all. The docs don't even contain the word MIDI. Can you control it without looking at it? MIDI Learn? OSC? Preset changes? Description says it has "Time sync" - Does that mean Ableton Link? IAA-Sync? MIDI-Clock or only internal? Don't see any of these in the docs klevgrand.se/downloads/modley-docs/ 🙁

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад +2

      You can map MIDI to AUv3’s through AUMs MIDI system. Open up the channel system by tapping at the channel name. Then tap the icon that looks like “mixer faders”. There’s a whole midi system there where you can add controllers and map a huge amount of stuff. Yes this works with Modley to, I just tried. I’ll be making a video about it.

    Why can you call a delay with built in reverb apps ... do reverbs always win in rock paper scissor? Isn‘t it a reverb app with a delay?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад +2

      As I state in the video, the main delay can always be heard no matter what you do. It’s the last thing in the chain and it’s always on. This is a delay with the ability to add a reverb (among other things) into the chain. It’s not a reverb app with a delay.

    • @VictorSteiner
      @VictorSteiner 5 лет назад

      It was more of a philosophical question concerning all apps, but your reasoning fits in many cases I guess. The delays can’t be turned off. Good reason. Thanks!

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад +2

      Ah, I’m very bad with philosophy because I generally deal with facts. 😅 You can of course make a reverb with delays. I’ve always loved the Delay as a “thing”. I mean It’s literally the basis of other fx like chorus, flangers, phasers, haas processors even reverbs. I mean a reverb is really just delayed reflected sound.

  • @sq9591
    @sq9591 5 лет назад +2

    This is an exaggeration. There are a lot of delays and other effects that we can combine with each other and we can get the same top results. And even resources are not overused. But here we deal with one au unit where even the authors point out the high cpu consumption. I wouldnt be so sure that this app is so extraordinary. At least not at this point. 🤔

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 лет назад +2

      Yes one AU unit, meaning one active fx node and one control instance. This is the whole point of the app for me. With multiple apps you’d have to do an incredible amount of switching between apps in order to set stuff up. That alone makes this app more hands on than a setup with multiple apps. The modular interface allows one to put up to 12 different fx and processors in one chain (13 with the main delay) pretty easily. This is not something I’d normally do with a multitude of different apps on one channel because it would quickly become more of a chore. I’m not completely convinced that the CPU load would be lesser either with a setup like that either. Sure, It all depends on the number of apps 🧐 I’d have to do way more testing before I can make up my mind.
      .
      In the end the modular interface changes the way I interact with these “common” effects and it changes how I think about stuff too. It’s like that old “Modular synth vs Synth” topic. For me the interface of Modley inspires me to do things I wouldn’t normally do. Just like I do different sounds with a modular system compared to what I make with a non-modular synth. I hope you get what I’m trying to say. 😅

    • @tomtraxx2589
      @tomtraxx2589 5 лет назад

      I also think that alone the possibility to reorder the FX chain is one thing you couldn‘t do that easily with a lot of separate apps - this fosters creativity enormously I would suppose - and you learn a lot about signal routing influence on the end result as well

      I’m confused. This way of making my content isn’t really that new. I’ve always put a lot of time into breaking up parts of a video, mixing it up between sound demos, review, tutorial etc. And I also expand on points by talking about various topics and ways of thinking of stuff. Maybe you’ve missed those types of videos? I’ve been doing it for at least two years ... I also stopped doing just shorter videos over three years ago. I have since then expanding on the way I make my content and the time and effort I put into them. I’m really confused. If you could give me more precise info on this “change” and when you felt it happened? I won’t be changing the way I do stuff either way, but I am curious to understand exactly what you mean. 😅👍🏼
