Relegation is 100% the reason English football works as well as it does. The entire English system is a masterclass in maintaining interest with a wider fanbase, and Connor is unusually right in that _every_ sports league needs to implement that system.

Relegation would be a nice thing to have but it’s not NEEDED to have a great league, primary example is the NFL it’s the league that has 100s of storylines and on top of that is a league that promotes parity, teams that made the playoffs one year might fall off and not make it the next year those stories don’t come from being relegated it just comes from the league just being naturally good and interesting to watch even without relegation

It is great and I love the system, but it works in England because of lots of factors specific to England. Large Population, Small Geography and the fact the teams, league, and fanbase was largely established before big money was introduced are some of the the biggest reasons it remains a functional system.
Also now that big money is involved, Regulation really only effects a tiny minority of teams. 99% of teams will never sniff the top leagues where the money is and without that money it is nearly impossible to reach those heights.
Also, The reason you can remember those amazing runs for promotion is they happen so infrequently.

Born in the late 90's as a forest fan, all i knew was Championship football and a some league one football, in 2022 I went to the promotion game game at wembley to watch Forest beat Huddersfield 1-0 and see us get back into the prem after 23 years. I've always watched the prem, but seeing my team there after only hearing stories of how great they were from my parents and grandparents is another feelings. Football need relegation and promotion, otherwise there is no consequence. Forest are currently 4th in the prem, that is WILD for me, the last two seasons it was a relegation battle (which was also incredible, i hated it but... it's part of the game). America needs to do this if they want football to be popular, but they won't.

There’s both Pros and Cons between Relegation and Franchise. I like the idea of consequences for playing good or bad but at the same time there’s a reason it’s only been the same teams at the top for decades. Whereas in the NBA and NFL we can have teams draft they’re star players and potentially starting winning like Giannis with the Bucks and Jokic on the Nuggets, you don’t have to worry about them getting bought out right away and now these poverty franchises are thrust into the spotlight not stuck at the bottom because they can’t afford to pay their players

    • @emmanuelogunlana877
      @emmanuelogunlana877 7 дней назад +1

Not gonna lie the NBA is kinda stale. All the same teams every year can get kind of boring to watch with almost the same rotation of players besides draft picks. At this point I must have seen Chris Paul at all the NBA teams now.

Ngl the Prem is possibly the closest to the NFL of football when it comes to the difference between Championship teams and Prems.
For people not wanting to read anymore, tldr the Prem is possibly the worst ran promotion/relegation system in the world of sports.
The economic situation of the league has gotten incredibly uneven between clubs. As a Liverpool supporter, sure, someone like Nottingham Forest beat us this year at Anfield, but it’s still worth nearly 450 millions euros - for context, is around the same as Napoli’s, who had won the Serie A relatively recently.
Leicester City got relegated but still had their Prem squad so easily got back up without much competition. All three promoted teams last year got relegated, and the current relegation zone coincidentally is also the three teams that got promoted/repromoted last year.
Fun fact: the three teams currently in the relegation zone have a squad with a combined worth of 816 million euros.
Every team in the championship combined is only worth 1.6 billion euros.
The cheapest squad in the Prem - Ipswich - is still worth almost €60 million more than the richest squad in the Championship - burnley - and almost 15x more expensive than the cheapest squad in the Championship - Portsmouth.
The current sides up for promotion in the Championship is filled with recently relegated teams funded with parachute funds. The few that miraculously get up naturally would be instantly relegated where they have to take out exorbitant amounts of loans to do a final gambit for reproportion with the risk of being in years of financial hell.
Sorry for long rant, but the Prem is genuinely no better than the NFL for a comparison (coming from a long time supporter of a Prem club that happens to acknowledge the system). The Bundesliga would be a better subject of sporting integrity in football.

4:45 I completely understand where Connor is coming from here, but as someone who has lived in America, and followed American sports my whole life I would have to partially disagree. With the NHL and the NFL (Ice Hockey & American Football respectively) in particular there are measures put in place like a salary cap that makes it so that 1 team with a mega-billionaire owner can't just hoard all the top talent, so scouting and drafting becomes really important, leading to guys who were relative unknowns on the national stage becoming massive successes at the professional level. Especially with the fact that all Leagues except for the NFL have a Draft Lottery that means that the team with the worst record isn't guaranteed the first pick in the draft. And as far as the Cinderella stories, we do still get them. In Baseball, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years in 2016, and the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years in 2003. In Hockey, the Florida Panthers spent pretty much the first 20 years of the new millennium as one of the biggest laughing stocks in the league, but are now a juggernaut defending their first championship. And in Football, my Detroit Lions who haven't won a championship since the 1950s, before the Superbowl even existed and were also one of the biggest laughing stocks in the league, are in the process of playing the best stretch of Football I've EVER seen them play in my 26 year lifespan. I will say regarding relegation that it would perhaps curtail some of the apathetic cheap-asses who run some teams into the ground for years because they know they'll make money off their team regardless of on-field product.
Tldr; I agree and disagree with Connor about the American sports model. We do have Cinderella stories with our sports, it just comes in different forms.

bro, in Europe there is Financial fair play. Any team violating it results in punishments such as heavy fines, points deduction, relegation and getting banned from participating in future top European competitions such as The Champions League, Europa League .
Also, FFP is done by balancing how much they earned previous year by selling players, tv rights etc. and how much that spent in employing their players, coach etc. This helps a club which overperforms with less budget get way more for next season, and underperforming top teams have to lower their spendings. Teams that get relegated or are at the bottom of the league get way less broadcasting money which is the main profitable source of income for those teams. Going down the league makes it harder to come back because the second tier league is also brutal.

No one will give them credit but Man City’s dominance is a reason why english football is more popular globally, No team has ever done 4 in a row to win the league, no team winning the league with 100+ points, 2nd english team to win the legendary treble.
I’d argue without Man City’s run from
2012 - Till present day, the League isn’t as popular. It was the dream of a small club being taken over with wealth and destroying the old elite.
Soon as Man City got taken over by the Abu Dabi owners the Premier League magically created ‘FFP’ to help the ‘Smaller Teams’
When in actuality it’s the Prem trying to protect the entitled established elite ‘aka red cartel’ (Arsenal, United, Liverpool) and for some reason Tottenham.
Thats why the richest club in the world Newcastle can’t compete with the top clubs because the red cartel doesn’t want another Chelsea or Man City to happen and it’s the same reason why United can break multiple FFP laws but don’t get punished.
City won’t win the league this year, but that creates the great narrative of a team finally slaying the dragon…. Which should of been Arsenal but looks like it will be Liverpool
