Thermal undergarments are absolutely needed in Japan for the cold Winters. Provides a barrier between you and air that a lot of times just rushes through jeans and jackets. That's what I did when I was living in Japan.
Next time, if you guys are camping again: get a sub-zero sleeping bag. It’ll help you guys a lot more next time. 👍🏼

lol that’s not how physics works. Wearing cloths, when by oneself, only adds insulation. The only exception to that might be if the cloths were wet. The reason you don’t wear clothes with another person is sharing body heat/reducing the surface area in which the heat can escape the body and not about trapping heat.

Garnt's pissing fear isn't irrational at all though. There are plenty of wild animals that will get extremely aggressive and violent if they catch you leaking on their territory.
There was some guy in Maine who lived in the woods for almost 30 years and didn't make a fire for the fear of getting discovered. He survived the cold by only sleeping at warmer times of the day and paced around during the cold times at night

When I was in Boy Scouts, camping during the winter, we would ring the fire with rocks. When we went to bed we would take some of the rocks with us to keep us warm during the night. The rocks retain and slowly release heat during the night.
Gotta admit this really gave me such a good laugh thank you trash taste for making my day great.

There is a trick I learned in Boy Scouts that you can use as a last result to get warm air
Take off your sock and use it as a mask usually your sock is warm enough from your foot and the stanch tends to be warm as well
As a poor person living in the only region of Brazil that can reach negative temperatures and Brazilian buildings not being prepared for cold weather at all, I had to get used to sleep with multiple layers of clothing.
I used to live in a pretty humid apartment without air conditioning and at some days it was -3C outside (and almost the same temperature inside as well, since insulation is not a thing here). So what I would do was to put on socks, then a wool pantyhose that went from my feet to right under my chest, then another layer of socks that went up to my knees, then pajama pants, then sweat pants, then the pajama shirt and the sweat hoodie. All of that so I could at least sleep comfortable with the bed sheets I had available at the time. One time it was so cold I had to wrap myself in a towel as well before covering my body with the sheets.
That being said I could not help but laugh at how you guys went unprepared for some cold weather.
