  • On December 26, 2010, Steve Hall named Kaleidoscope Canyon in the Black Mountains of Death Valley National Park after becoming the first hiker to ever document a visit to it. Kaleidoscope Canyon has now become fairly well known to long-time Death Valley hikers for the unique shapes and beautiful colors on display within the canyon walls. In January of 2024, Steve brings his family back (along with viewers) to do the 6 mile round-trip hike in Death Valley Discoveries Episode 6. The parking area for Kaleidoscope Canyon is located near mile marker 48 along Jubilee Pass Road (or Badwater Road).

I hiked Kaleidoscope Canyon on your recommendation back in 2017 and I agree that it is a lovely collection of shapes and colors! Thanks for sharing this with us again.

Among all the colorful scenes I particularly enjoyed your view back of The Owlsheads east side canyons on a gorgeous clear day. FYI another location for a huge variety of mud drips is in the basin between Artists Palette and Borax Benchmark. It’s a challenging scramble but well worth the effort. Thanks again for creating this engaging series.

Looks like a great hike. I'll definitely check out the geology on my next trip to DV.
Those hoodoos are created by the hard/resistant caprock protecting the top while the underlying softer sediments are eroded away.
