The American film and television actor, stuntman, and world-champion rodeo cowboy Francis Benjamin Johnson Jr. was also a member of the United States military. Johnson's sardonic demeanor and superb horsemanship endowed him with the ability to bring authenticity to a wide variety of roles in Westerns.
Johnson, who was the son of a rancher, traveled to Hollywood in order to bring a shipment of horses that were going to be used in a movie. For a number of years, he worked as a stunt double before he finally broke into the acting industry with the assistance of John Ford. Johnson was awarded the Academy Award, the BAFTA Award, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1971 for his elegiac depiction of a former cowboy theater owner in the coming-of-age film The Last Picture Show, which was set in the 1950s.
Over the course of his career, Johnson also ran a ranch that specialized in horse breeding. Johnson was reported to be worth one hundred million dollars by the time he was in his later years, despite the fact that he expressed that he had achieved success by adhering to what he was already familiar with.
