The year 1987 marked a large breakthrough for African American corporate leaders seeking to rise through the ranks to become senior executives within Fortune 500 companies, when Clifton Wharton Jr. was tapped to be the Chief Executive Officer of the giant financial services company, TIAA-CREF. Being the first African American to pilot a Fortune 500 company appeared to be the ceiling smashing moment needed in American corporate history for African Americans. It however would take ten years from that moment for Franklin D. Raines another African American, to become the CEO and Chairman of Fannie Mae. Ten more years would pass when in 2009, Ursula Burns became the first African American woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Ursula was selected to lead Xerox Corporation (Cornileus, 2013). Since Clifton Wharton’s breakthrough in 1987, another 13 African American men have also made it to the level of CEO and in some cases Chairman of Fortune 500 companies. Unfortunately, the current count of Black CEO’s as of 2019 stands at the lowest level since 2002 (Donnelly, 2018). In 2021 the story is much the same.
I am both proud & thankful that Rosalind Brewer continues to shift the paradigm and the face of leadership within Fortune 500 Companies.

Ms. Brewer was really one of the only ones who passed the ethics test for board consideration if interested. Jamie also passed but he holds a strong partnership with those who I don't have a desire to have attached to my business.

Yes. She is the CEO of Walgreens. She was the CFO of Starbucks before this position but was offered this opportunity to be the CEO of Walgreens. She was also the CEO of Sam's Club. An absolute force of brilliance. I've been following her career since in 2010 t time she was working at Walmart in various executive positions. So proud to see her shine.

Great interview discussing her family, education and past experiences. But, the questions that Walgreen team members and stockholders will want to hear is what will she do to make Walgreens a better place to work and what will be done to drive the business (sales & profits). Walgreens was a results driven company back before Boots. Look forward to hearing and seeing her plan on bringing Walgreens back!
