Get Your Group To Break Up with D&D Using [Crown & Skull]

- Before you come @ me in the comments, play the game you want to play. This video is here to highlight the game Crown & Skull, bring it to more people attention, and talk about the intense level of customization available to players in this game.
Customization that doesn't give the GM heaps and loads of homework, or cause your players to stop using their brains to solve problems.
Crown & Skull is an excellent option for D&D players who want to slim down on their rules heavy games but still allow for plenty of customization through a robust character creation system.

thanks for the kind words, Elder!
Absolutely! Your games rock brother 🛡️
excellent overview. I own Crown and Skull and have yet to read it. This is the inspiration needed. Will read it this weekend. THANK YOU!!!!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
Yeah this is one I'm going to have to dig out and crack open again.
Thanks for the concise review! I got my book a few days ago. You are right, just reading in it has a special kind of magic.
It really is. I can count the number of role-playing games I've read front to back on one hand, and I would only use half my fingers.
Wow! This review gave me a ton of ideas for my upcoming video on why I Hate Spell Slots. I’m definitely going to check out this game for its attrition mechanics and the GM tips. Thanks Goblin!
😆 I'm also not a fan of spell slots btw. I've seen a lot of games that have much more interesting or impactful mechanics. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@ElderGoblinGames I found your channel a month ago and enjoy your content. Keep up the great work!
@@dnd-and-philosophy thank you! Welcome to the Goblin Gang
good stuff.
🥳🫂👍🏿
@@ElderGoblinGames another for the house rule quest ❤️ #2,288
crown and skull is a really cool game
👑💀
I've been hearing good things about Crown & Skull, particularly as it relates to alternatives to traditional hit point-based systems.
The Attrition system as you've described it is fascinating. I can see how that would give a gritty, intimate feeling to the adventure.
It is super interesting. There's also some mechanics I didn't quite get to get into here on the GM side of the screen that have different ways they "deal damage" sometimes it's to a random skill sometimes it's to a specific kind of equipment, sometimes it's either or. I just find the game very innovative and fascinating.
@@ElderGoblinGames Exactly! Every RPG has something to teach us!
If you want low scale fantasy games, Olde Sword RPG is a mix of 5e and 0e. It has a lot of strong player customization options and is also pretty rules lite. It's free to download and it's a shame how no one talks about it. The creator also likes Basic Fantasy RPG, another free game, and there is some deliberate cross compatibility.
Just searched your video catalogue. You haven't made a video of Olde Swords Reign either! It's 3rd edition is in the works. Maybe you could be the guy to give it a review and put it on people's radar?
I've never heard of that one, but I'll put it on the ever growing list!
@@ElderGoblinGames Thank you!👍
Goblin invasion incoming!
Sorry everyone, having some trouble with RUclips. Working on getting the video to premiere soon!
No worries - saw another premier have a similar issue
@@TwinSteel I think premiers are having trouble today so I just ended up re-publishing it. No point waiting for nothing!
Didn't get a notification... so I'm the one having a problem.
@@TakaD20 HEY TAKA. MY NEW VIDEO IS OUT.
@@ElderGoblinGames I like that! Let's keep it. Written notification would be even better though. Maybe delivered by mounted messenger...
You might enjoy my QUARREL + FABLE: three simple stats but an open-ended skill system which players define themselves
Your hook made me want to leave a snarky comment like "You think Crown & Skull is going to break players out of 5e? Pshaw." But your introduction was actually really well put.
Success! I'm sure it won't be for everyone, but it might be the transitional game players need to check out other options.
@@ElderGoblinGames I liked ICRPG, so I was excited for Crown & Skull, then I skimmed the free pdf that was released at launch and it sadly wasn't for me.
@@Joshuazx I kind of felt the same way at first, but getting to play it was a totally different experience for me. It's hard to really capture in a video. If you have some friends that would be interested in a one shot I highly encourage trying to play it. There are some things I didn't really cover much in this video that are just really fresh and awesome about the system, kind of like the way monsters work with the phases and things like that.
@@ElderGoblinGames sadly, people I know immediately shoot me down when I suggest games now.
@@Joshuazx
finding new people to play with at local ttrpg club saved my game.
every gm hypes up every other gm who's not married to the default game and it works. whoever preps new game first gets the hardships and glory.
weirdly enough I now even enjoy default game from time to time, since it doesn't feel like a hostage situation anymore.
Awesome Crown & Skull review!
Love how customizable everything is!
Tales of Argosa comes to mind when speaking about customization for players while remaining somewhat rules-light
dood, i feel ya, im a former IT tech, and it still pisses me off lol. Cool vid bro. Keep 'em Rollin'
Thanks! Tech issues are no fun. Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally~!
😅 yeah... fun times
Great video! We need to play that game!
Check it out! I think it's really interesting / innovative.
Now that I caught up to the video: Great, another game that I desperately want to play now!
Do it! [insert Emperor meme]
@@ElderGoblinGames I heard it in his voice.
Great review! My teenage players switched to Crown and Skull just before school started and have been loving it!
Heck yeah! That's awesome!
I have mixed feelings about C&S. There are some things that I really like about it but I feel that certain elements (like magic) are a step backwards from ICRPG. I'm also not sure what the tone is supposed to be. Parts seem serious, but then we have samurai frogs and characters with names like Wallabytarnwhatwallaby, which makes it seem more comedic. Overall, I was a bit disappointed in it because I really liked ICRPG and expected C&S to be an evolution/ improvement.
But then again, I have only had one read-through. I will go back to it at some point to re-read and see if my opinion has changed.
Totally understand. I love ICRPG, especially as an introductory game, or stripped down version of D&D. They are definitely different games for different people, but I think that's a really good thing. ICRPG stands on its own for its simplicity, but crown and skull will definitely grab people that ICRPG won't. Personally I'm glad to see Runehammer have such different products, because that means they will be able to pull in different types of players who enjoy totally different things. And keep making wonderful games. Thanks for watching the video!
@@ElderGoblinGames definitely a smart move to appeal to different audiences. It was just a matter of having the wrong expectations on my end. Still a great game, just one that (for me) may require some tinkering.
We found the asymmetry of the attrition system such a hitch to gameplay we actually called off the campaign. The difference in character architecture works brilliant until someone changes sides, then suddenly the rescued "enemy" is structurally incapable of fighting along side. In a fallen world of ever shifting alliances, the fact that the core mechanic gets in the way of exactly that happening is... rough.
@@monkeymule1286 I may be misunderstanding, but if you had an enemy join your party, could you not simply stat them up as a normal character and apply the attrition rules?
Again, I may be misunderstanding. It's been a couple of months since I read the book and could be misremembering systems.
@@monkeymule1286 Huh, I don't know that I'd personally ever run a game where players can "switch sides." Do you mean turn on each other? Like as in PvP?
Or maybe I'm misunderstanding.
Terrific overview. Thanks so much for the content. I discovered this RPG a number of months ago and just wasn’t sure about it, but I feel like you’ve emboldened me to try it.
Nice! Definitely give it a shot. There is a free players guide you can check out over on the runehammer store.
This seems super cool! Thanks for such a streamlined review highlighting all the major points and not going down any crazy rabbit holes
😅 you should have seen my pre edited video. It was 68 minutes 👀
I'm definitely a rambler, especially when I go without a script!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I was just looking that game up as you're talking about it, and apparently these are the Icy RPG people. Is that one any good?
Is ICRPG any good? Oh yeah! I call it DnD lite. Lots of quality of life improvements and great optimization for Game Masters.
Thanks for this video...great stuff here
Thanks for watching! 🧌💚
to balance unbridled creativity with math is a holy grail of mine, and it's no surprise that it's now happening thanks decades of Runehammer's experience and knowledge of structures people do expect to start with in their games.
I'm so grateful for this system and so glad that nobody could persuade author to just milk the initial success of the Index Card RPG without taking the game further)
hyped to run it, but i really need to wait for the crow&skull intro song by elder goblin to drop
Hahaha, yes I definitely didn't have time to make a jingle this week but I need to! 🎶🧌
