      0,5x35=17,5

The main point of my comment was that I liked the METHOD she used to teach her. Also I said, they didn't teach it THAT way.. which they didnt. My kids teachers now dont. They don't tell you.. take whatever percentage and take it off each dollar than add the remaining for the answer.

Sales percentage are based on 100. What percent of 100... .. hence her saying 70 cents off each 100 cents. She still has to pay 30 cents of every dollar and technically she just did 3 x 5 but in cents. 3 x 5 is 15... do it this way, but what cents you have to pay.. but simplify as 3x5. As an adult your common sense should tell you it then costs 1.50.

    • @Saintacy
      @Saintacy 5 месяцев назад +1

Also, research has shown that overall private school math curriculum and scores are lower than public school, except Lutheran private schools, their math curriculum is on par or better than public schools.
Also, private schools don't have to necessarily hire certified teachers who went to school to learn what to teach and how to teach the what.

You also can figure this way. Whatever the percentage take from 100. In this case 100-70=30 & then multiple by the price 30 x $5.00 = $1.50.
      Another example 15% on item for $4.00. 100-15=85 ×$4.00= $3.40.

In our classrooms at the primary school where I work (Elementary), we have daily " Number Talks" A sum is written on the board. Students are encouraged to work it out and then talk and show their method through to the class.
Any method is acceptable, as long as the student can talk it through and reach the correct answer. This allows other students to think outside the box. We also encourage peer to peer support when a method does not work but other students can see where it slipped up.
When I was in primary myself, there was only one way allowed only trachers were allowed to present to the class and many students floundered as a result, myself included.

Others have explained already, but in case someone is still confused I'll try to go into more detail.
70% off $5, which means you will be paying 30% out of the $5. This means multiply 5*30% to multiply you can also express percentages as decimal, in this case 5*0.3=1.5 so $1.50.
In my mind I actually do it as 5*3=15 and then add the decimal point.
For Americans, I also do this for tipping, to tip 20% I double the amount and then add the decimal point. Hope this helps! And please ask any questions if this is still unclear

I'm a teacher too, and this is not far off from Task-based learning we use in language education. Basically rather than the goal being learning a specific thing or completing an exercise, you set a broader task that naturally teaches the required skillset. In this case the task could be making 5 dinners this week on a budget using clearance items. Students have to combine skills to meaningfully learn how to use new ideas and knowledge.

Same with language. When kids (mostly older toddlers and on) don’t quite know what word they’re thinking, often adults will say “use your words”. Well, how do you use words you don’t know? We wouldn’t expect adults to come up with the word in a foreign language like that, why do we expect children to?

For bigger values you can find a smaller percentage and multiply to get your answer.
      Ex: 70% off 1300
      10% of 1300 = 130
      130×7 = 910
      1300-910 = 490
This works for me because I can get the value to something a bit easier to work with, especially when it's not a nice even number.

Most adults didn't learn it this way. Most all adults learned: multiply the amount by the percentage and then subtract that amount from the original cost. Mental math has nothing to do with it. The way it was taught, it's just easier to get the calculator.

Remember the sheets of paper with all the equations that we had either 5 or 10 minutes to do as many as we could in 2nd and 3rd grade but we tend to for get that as after 4th we were made to focus on the more complex that needed us to use a calculator. I did things like this with my son starting really young. I spoke to him with complicated vocabulary and had him figure out real life math as you encounter it in everyday math. When my son got his college scholarship and I was praising all his hard work, he hugged me and told me that the respect I showed him as a child who was capable of understanding complicated concepts was the reason he loves school and learning. You will both benefit from this type of respect for knowledge.
