As an admirer of both maestros, I did not even hear the sitar here. It was all pervasive Ustad Ali Akbar Khan sahab. What a performance.
Not true. It is not easy to distinguish between the two, but Vilayat made his contribution because he is aggressive & dominant whereas Ali Akbar Khan is humble & tolerant.

An exceptional duet by the two fountain heads of sarod and sitar, both are the supreme geniuses.Their flairs come out from their strums, they were always dominant in their domains.

Unfortunately the Sitar sound is somehow so muted in this jugalbandi. With proper sound this would have been such a memorable recording to enjoy. Maybe if the original recording is still available with someone, it is possible to remaster the audio file in order to allow Vialyat Khan's Sitar equal weighting. It almost seems like someone may have deliberately reduced mic on Vilayat Khan, either during performance or afterwards. Politics and shenanigans of this kind are not unknown in the music world. There is a recording of these two great musicians (Vilayat Khan and Ali Akbar) playing together Behari ki Gat as well. What a shame, that they did not get together more often. Ravi Shankar hogged all the glory, just because Maihar gharana and Imdad Khan gharana were traditional rivals. Ustad Sabri khan Sarangi Nawaz once told me that in the mid 40s, the trio of Ali Akbar khan, Vilayat Khan and Ravi Shankar performed together at one of the first All India Music conferences, with Vilayat Khan in the centre not only holding his own against each of the other two, but getting standing ovations from the audience when in the drut phase he replied to each of their taanas in turn with his own lightning and unbelievable taankari. The audience were going berserk, it seems, watching this amazing spectacle. Afterwards, Allauddin Khan took both Ali Akbar and Ravi Shankar to task for having allowed Vilayat Khan to perform with them. The fact is that it was Ali Akbar Khan's loss (and ours) that he did not perform regularly with Vilayat Khan in the years following. His genius would have flowered better with a regular association with Vilayat Khan, and Indian Classical music would have been richer for it.

I have an experience watching Pt. Ravishankar with Ustad Aliakbar Khan, with Ustad Allahrakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain live performance. But never heard Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Aliakbar Khan jugalbandi, maestros from different gharana 👍.

Rageshree Music Institute I have the recording of 1978 in California I have to check. In this recording there is a light piece and the teen taal bandish. Kind of unusual for these tow giants unless when was copied reversed. I need to listen the entire recording and let you know if this is the concert in California. I could not go the concert because it was my graduation night. But I met Khan Sahib few days after the concert at a friends house for the first time.
