We had no clue about that until we watched his video 1 day before touring DC! Thankfully because of that, we obeyed the rule, and had several people thank us.

Whether you're from DC or not, whether you're from a city with decent public transit or not, standing on the right of the escalator to allow people to pass on the left is SIMPLE.COMMON.SENSE.

I just got back from my first visit to DC. I watched oodles of your videos and am so glad I did. I felt like a pro when I rode the Metro for the first time. I chose to start with $15 and had $3 left at the end of the week when I left. The metro was great for getting from DCA to my hotel and at the end of the day when I found myself a couple miles from my room at the end of the day and too tired to walk back. The $15 was all I spent for transportation all week. Other than the Metro, I walked everywhere. I walked a total of 40 miles all week from Arlington to the Capitol and several trips between. Thanks for all of your help. My first solo vacation to DC couldn't have been better thanks to your hacks.

I guess this could go on any of the multiple videos of yours I watched, Rob. I just got home yesterday from my first ever trip to DC and I was able to really make the most out of my time there due to learning so much from your videos. Things like the most effective way to use the metro, having the Cityplanner app, going to some of the restaurants you suggested and getting the credits for downloading some of the apps (District Taco was great!), and just the wisdom to give yourself some room for delays, walking time etc. Thank you so much! My trip was significantly better than it would have been without your help! I would not hesitate to recommend you and your videos to anyone going to DC!

Just got back from a conference in DC and I watched many of your videos before I went. I must say that your Metro videos were tremendously helpful, from getting and adding to my Smarttrip card, to where to walk on the escalators to how to read the map, they were all invaluable! @@TripHacksDC In Hong Kong they will rush into the train and you must maneuver to exit. Frustrating. I may have over-reacted and stepped straight out, firmly, and knocked three smaller framed locals on the ground. Errr my bad.
I'm from Australia and we recently went to DC. We had friends that lived right near Whiele-Reston East on the end of the silver line so we always got the train to Metro Center/Smithsonian and walked from there into DC. You guys have nice trains, especially the newer cars :)
The new trains sure are a lot nicer than the old ones!

I'm from a small city, we don't have a metro and there's rarely any places here that use escalators besides the mall, so I never knew the rule about never standing on the left. Thank you for sharing that particular etiquette hack with us! :)
Edit: I was seeing that some of the other comments say it is pure common sense to stand on the right, but to most people who've never traveled by metro before it's an entirely foreign system which may be awfully confusing at first..! So while I can see why it'd be annoying for the locals, I don't quite blame tourists either

I was just in D.C. a few weeks ago and my mom fell victim to the escalator rule. We live in NY.
Well, at least she hopefully knows now.

Just come back from DC, your video was perfect. We used the Metro every day, including to/from Dulles Airport, well to Wheelie 😅 Reston as the Silver Line wasn’t quite ready to Dulles. The fares were so cheap unlike the bar prices and Whole Foods!

We were there 2 weeks ago. We stayed in Georgetown near the Foggy Bottom metro and used it every day to get into the generla area that we wanted for sightseeing. I wish we would have bought a weekly pass ($17?) because we spent that much for the 5 days that we were there just using it once in AM and once to get home.
The 7-day short-trip pass is $38.50 so it's worth it to some heavy users, not worth it to lighter users.
Great video. I like tip 8 I think it was about tapping before the gate closes. I would add, look at the screen and be sure it has recognized your fare card. You'll see the remaining value change to what you will likely have an idea is left on your card.
Good idea. It's always good to know what your balance is.
Remember the first time riding Washington's metro. It was my last. I hate being too close to strangers and it happened. Anxiety was up through the roof, was having a panic attack and i had to run off the metro the first stop it did.

I planned ahead and had a metro card mailed to me weeks before my trip. It came with 8 bucks on it, so I can get settled before topping it off.

I needed this for the first couple of minutes about purchasing the card. I visited 2yrs ago and the vending machine was confusing. No one at the Farragut station booth to assist me, but I eventually understood the signage and figured it out on my own. 😥whew! Thanks Rob

Hey Rob, your videos are great. They have really helped my wife and I get around the city. We are moving up to the area and we'd really appreciate one or two videos that focused on people coming to area to potentially live there. I know your main target audience is tourists, but I'm sure there are others in a similar situation to us.
Here are some questions that I have as a person who has visited trying to move there:
1. What are the pros and cons of different ways to get to work (specifically biking)? Can you take a bike on a metro train?
2. How does the metro bus fare work?
3. Do regular commuters fill up their metro card like a regular tourist would?
This is a great idea for a series. I can't promise I'll be able to make these soon as I've already produced most of the videos for the summer, so in the meantime, the answers to your questions are:
1. The biggest pro to biking is the low cost. Depending where you live work it may be faster than Metro too. The biggest con is that you may arrive at work sweaty in the summer. Many office buildings have gyms where you can shower if this is a concern. You can take your bike on Metro on weekends and weekdays excluding rush hour.
2. Metrobus fare is $2 for regular routes and $4.50 for express buses. Money is deducted from your Smartrip, same as Metro.
3. Many commuters add fare at the machines the same as tourists. Some have arrangements where their employer will add it for them. Check with your HR to see what they offer.

Are public bike racks readily available around the area? Are most roads made with a bike lane? Can you take your bike on any part of the train? I saw some doors that had a sign for no bikes.
How does the bus fare system work if you are going from bus to bus or metro train to bus? I saw a sign but it was confusing.
Bike racks are pretty readily available. Knowing which streets have bike lanes and which bike lanes don't have cars parked in them all the times take a bit of practice. I recommend reading Metro's official guidance about bikes on Metro as there are some rules and restrictions: www.wmata.com/service/bikes/
Bus-bus transfers are free. Bus-rail transfers are not free, but you will get a small discount on whichever you are transferring on to.
Hi there! Thanks so much for the video. I'm using the Metro website's Trip Planner feature to plan ahead a bit but I always see a warning when looking at the itinerary (the little red circle with a red exclamation mark inside). The message says something about the yellow line that trains only operate for scheduled maintenance and they advise to take the blue line.... It seems sooooo complicated.....do you know if there's some major work going on and things are all out of sorts?
Hi Daisy. Yes unfortunately there is major weekend track work coming up on the Yellow Line that will impact travel between Virginia and DC. You can see a calendar of planned maintenance here: www.wmata.com/service/track-work.cfm If you can swing it, I strongly recommend staying downtown for your trip so you can avoid the headaches of weekend Metro maintenance.

When I worked in D.C. in the early and mid 1970s, there was no metro, just those damned MetroBusses. Some thought the streets were made of wood, because they were building the subway at the time. I don't know when they finally finished it. But about 30 years later I came back for a visit and the train is a lot quicker getting from Virginia to D.C. than those old metrobusses.

How would I go to a capitals game? what station would I have to get off at if I wanted to go to one using this system? say I was coming from DCA. Once I arrived at DCA, how would I get to the DCA metro station from baggage claim?
Gallery Pl-Chinatown for a Caps game. For DCA your best bet is to follow the signs. Terminal A is a lot farther away than Terminals B&C, plus the airport is under heavy construction at the moment.
Can you use a single smart trip card for multiple people, or does everybody have to have one

im originally from northern Virginia and once was metro pro to traveling to dc's colleges to party. too bad now im in the army and will proably not go to dc for a very long time. until then i will be a metro boss. always walk to the end of the tunnel where the amount of people on each train car is smaller.
Good tip. The first car of the train is often less crowded than the ones in the middle!
Do I pay twice on the dc metro once to get on the train and once to exit the terminal?
You have to tap in both when you enter and when you exit, but you only get charged when you exit.

as a new metro rider...how do i choose the option to pay for all-day pass? i just load money and go cause im not exactly sure and don't want to mess up?
The easiest way to add an all-day pass to your SmarTrip is at a fare machine in any station. I personally don't think the 1-day passes are worth it for most people.
So, I'm also from the D.C. area (Maryland really) and I'm just thinking how stupid these people are not knowing the stand on the right, walk on the left thing. It's common practice in many areas. I would also like to add that the app called Transit is really great, as it gives you all options for transit, including Uber, biking/ bike share, and walking. Also a tip for those who are coming from the airport, Metro only serves Regan National Airport(DCA) the smaller and US and Canada only airport , and not Dulles International (IAD), the larger international airport. A bus does serve between Dulles and Whilie-Reston East, the closest Metro station on the Silver Line. Great video, and good look with your tour business!

Your comment about stand right/walk left being common practice in many areas only applies to the few cities that have a subway. I just came home from DC where I rode the subway for the second time in my life (i'm 48). I found it funny to watch people sprint up the escalator only to stand next to them on the platform for 5 minutes waiting for the next train. Running don't make the train come faster. If you're commuting an hour or more, what's saving 15 seconds on the escalator gonna do for you?

Depends what you saw before and what's on your to-do list for this time. Regardless, I'd still say 3 or 4 days is usually good for a domestic trip.

My only pet peeve of riding the Metro is that each time I visit DC, I have to struggle to get my 27" suitcase through the gate before it closes and sometimes I had to play tug of war with it. I always ride the elevator with the suitcase because there's no room for it on the escalator.
I know this is an old comment but in the future, just talk to the station manager. They’ll let you go through the swing gate (next to the station manager booth) with your suitcase and you can just tap your card to pay your fare without going the regular gate.

Unless you're going to American and have access to their u-pass just get a regular SmarTrip and load it up with money as you need it.

If you buy it at the machine it will become active on your next tap into the system.

Honestly unless you want a novelty card I would just purchase it at a station. I don't know how a card purchased by mail will behave. Also please do the math to make sure a day pass is even economical as for most people it is cheaper to just pay per ride. Have fun.

For Metro rail, the price you depends on which station you enter and exit. The number of trains you take to get there doesn't matter. I typically don't recommend the 1-day pass.

When you tap your SmartTrip card to exit the station, are you paying to exit? Or are you just tapping to notify the system that you are exiting? Thanks!
You pay upon exit, since the fare you're charged depends on how far you traveled.

Me and my buddy are gonna come from Baltimore Comic Con for a day to go to DC on our way back to Reagan Airport to fly home. What would be the best way to get from the Baltimore airport to downtown DC and then back to Reagan airport in the evening?
Check out Amtrak or the MARC Penn Line to get from BWI to Union Station in DC. You can take the blue or yellow lines to DCA for your flight home.

The yellow line can get you to the airport from downtown in 30 minutes or less during the week. On the weekend Metro is less reliable and you should budget extra time. Hello I'm visiting D.C in feb 2018 but staying in Alexandria, Virginia do you recommend renting a vehicle or taking the metro as transportation.
I always recommend staying downtown (if possible) because it's so much more convenient; but as long as where you are staying in Alexandria is close to a Metro station then you don't need a rental car.

You gotta tap out when exiting the metro; otherwise, your card wont work next time you're entering. Even though you can just walk behind someone else and not bother, it is not worth it.

The demand is higher so the price gets higher
