Who's planning on growing garlic for the first time?!
Hello, I am in Kansas (Abilene) 6a. I tried to plant in spring once with limited success. I was researching when to plant garlic in the fall with varying information. Thank you for your informative video
First time growing garlic and I'm super excited. I use garlic in everything - Sauces, Quesadillas, Steak, everything! Have heard the flavor of hardneck is fantastic too so I can't wait.

Newbie here. This was my first year to grow onions, luffa,Cuzzi long neck squash and potatoes. I used grow bags for everything. I dumped the potato bags one at a time and let my two 5 year old grand daughters dig them out. They had a blast and talked about it for weeks.

Waiting until after the first frost is an interesting tip. I tried to time things to plant a few weeks before first frost, but it was delayed, and that might explain some of the issues I had this year. I'll try waiting this fall. Thanks for posting this vid!
Tried a soft neck garlic for the first time in SD this summer. It was nearly a complete failure. I think I planted too early last fall. Trying again w/ Siberian hard neck garlic this fall. Fingers crossed! Failure is always an option! That’s just part of moving, and learning a new area I guess. Thanks for the quality tips and content.
Me! I'm gonna try to plant garlic for the first time either this year or next, depending on how much time and energy my toddler leaves me, lol. 😆🙈 I might go for a softneck variety though, since I live down in zone 8. Love hearing your advice and seeing your success! Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Yes softneck would be best for you I believe! Honestly garlic is one of the most hands off in my opinion! Great for anyone getting into gardening more!
Hi Bre. This is my first time finding your channel, and I greatly enjoyed your garlic presentation...thanks so much for sharing! I’m in middle of my 4th round of planting and harvesting hardneck garlic (planted mid-Oct 2023, plan on harvesting early/mid June 2024…NC, new zone 8a…started with planting my first pound in Oct 2020 and have been carrying forward since). A couple of thoughts/questions, if you don’t mind:
1) I typically pull mine out of the ground, and wipe off and cut roots and shoots off the same day as harvest (or day after, depending on available time). Afterwards, I just lay them flat on a garage floor for a few weeks to dry out. Last harvest was late May 2023, and I’m still eating those (so they seem to have cured well enough using that approach). I like this method, because it can be done while I'm still physically in the garden and I can use the shoots/roots as mulch for other plantings, but I’m always open to new strategies .Have you ever cured this way, and if so, how did it compare to leaving the roots/shoots intact longer during the drying process?
2) As noted above, I’m still eating my 2023 hardneck garlic 8-9 months after harvest, with hopes that the remainder makes it to my next harvest. When hardneck garlic goes bad in storage (sits too long), what are the signs you’ve noted? May 2023’s harvest was the first time I finally had enough to eat until the next harvest with plenty leftover for planting.
I know this is wordy, but figured being thorough was worth it for good information. 🙂Thanks for any insight you may have!

I planted my garlic last october/november here in california both hardneck and softneck, the hardneck garlic is scaping in March! im blown away might be getting garlic by the end of the month the bottom leaves have turned brown and crispy. Zone 10A now, used to be 9b before the update. I did put it in the fridge for 2 months prior to planting.
Softnecks do great in my 5b zone. Transylvanian, Inchilleum, Red Toches.
PS I USE OLD LEAVES AS A GROUD COVER WORKS GREAT....

I had topped my garlic with about 6” of animal bedding (cedar shavings) because of how cold it got.. how should I feed it the bone meal now? Should I remove all the mulch?
I leave all my mulch. Start to feed plants when you see about 6in of growth. Ive your unsure of your current levels with soil sometimes it can be helpful to do a soil test to better see what you soil is lacking before feeding your plants. One thing Ive changed is feeding with something higher in nitrogen at first to help promote more leaf growth in these early spring months, ( I was reading more on the website from the seed garlic company Ive gone with in the past and they have always suggested blood meal or something more balanced like kelp and fish. Once its about 12 inches tall I switch to bone meal for one of the last feedings. Stop feeding once scapes appear or about 1 month before harvest. I may feed garlic 3-4 times before its harvested. Hope this helps!
DO YOU DEHYDRATE YOUR GARLIC AT THE 6 MO TIMES I DO NOT HAVE TO THROW OUT THIS GARLIC? OR DRY OUT AFTER 1 MONTH OF DRYING??
I got Garlic from a friend this year and it had big seed heads. I saved all the seeds from the tops. Can I plant the little seeds ? That’s what I was planning on doing??
I personally never have. I also have seen it done, but honestly doesnt hurt to try! Im sure you would still get something! I plant onion from seed instead of tiny bulbs! My thought it would work the same way

Where I live, we supposedly have to grow garlic AND onions in the winter because it's too hot (Georgia) the rest of the year for onions. I'm going to try. I tried all summer with the onions and something kept digging them up. I had the same issue with garlic in the winter, because we have birds all year here. Do you think they would grow okay with something like a piece of fencing or bed netting over them? I'm at my wit's end with these dang critters lol.

Hi. Is EZ straw free of seed? I got some straw last year that was to be seed free and it wasn’t. What a disaster!! Interested in the ez straw.
It’s 99% weed free! I love it! Barely have to pull anything out of it!
