  • Wooden shingles as a roofing have a long tradition in Austria. There are several designs depending on the regions, and one type is called the "Schieferschindel". Due to its airy setup, it is possible to use less durable wood species for this particular type, but wood quality is still a key factor in shingle production. The roofing shown in the video has lasted for 37 years and is now being replaced by the craftsmen of the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing.

I've seen a few video on making wood shingles/shakes and roofing with them, but this is the finest workmanship I have seen.

    shingle iron = froe
Since these shingles are wet, and a tiny gap is left between the head of the nail and the shingles, it would seem by the time the shingle is dry, there would be a LOT of gap between the shingle and the nail head.

they bundled them to dry for 1-2 years before use

Interesting I noticed he only used 1 nail per shingle or shake.

It depends on how you Kay your shingles. I made a small shed with wooden shingles once and I also only used one nail. If you know where/how to put it it works pretty good

It looks to me like the one nail actually penetrates the shingle next to it also, resulting in 2 nails per shingle much like modern sawn shingles get.
