Join me as I head out on a 6 km journey to the Shores of the Bonnechere River where I set up a tarp shelter for the day and try my luck at some pike fishing.
The ice is very thin and patchy, the water is fast moving and beavers use this bank often. Thin ice is not something to mess around with so I put a small log out on the ice to distribute my weight
and also it gives me something to grab in case I do go threw. It looks shallow but it drops off to 30 feet very fast after the shore line.
After my fishing line is all setup and baited I venture off into the forest to find myself a few nice bushy balsam trees.
I take a few limbs from each tree to lay on the ground where I'm going to be laying, to keep the chill off my legs.
I also show you what I think is the best source of fatwood. I haven't found anything better than old burnt stumps from past forest fires.

I don't mind the snow, but 6 months is long enough for me. Last year it was 8 months, first week of november was the first snow and the second week in june was our last snowfall. I believe we got a total of 16 foot of snow for winter where I am. that's measuring just after it stops snowing each time, it melts and packs down but i'd be willing to bet it's still 5 or 6 foot deep.

I know when i dropped the loop on the snow it didn't land as i wanted it to. and after watching the video back at home it was kind confusing, me fixing it to lay pretty. i simply just made a loop then put the hook threw the tag end but i made it look more difficult. haha yeah true. ill take the sore nards compared to going all the way under though, been through the ice on this river before when the ice was alot thicker. I'm on the east side of algonquin park. Thanks for the kind words :)

That is a nice camp setup you have and it must be nice to camp out in the wild and having the supplies you need to survive.

NICE fat wood, and i think two poles would've been more stable on the ice for this safer approach. THANKS for showing the drying smoke process...where's the fish? Any one out there?
Thank you kindly and yeah two poles would be better than one forsure. Yeah about the fish well you see lol. nah. I didn't catch any, i guess they weren't up for my leftover steak. Now it has turned hot here and the ice has melted to much for me to walk on it. Down the river is a lake and some summer cottages are on it and one house, but i can spend all day in that spot and not hear a single sound of humans. Its kinda nice. Cheers Eric

I know, I usually always have luck in that spot and it made my video turn out a lot different than I was planning it too but thats okay I still had a great day out fishing and enjoying the beautiful day it was 8*C by 1pm. Yes that sure was an otter. Cheers Eric :)
