    A Tenor has a high-pitched voice that falls between the Baritone and Alto voice types. The word comes from the old French medieval Latin word tenere, which means to hold. This is because the Tenor, being above the other male-associated voicetypes, often held the melody.
    Chest Voice: A Tenor has a range from B2 up to C5 in chest voice. It's rare for Tenors to be able to sing below this, but in some cases can extend a few notes lower to around A2 or Ab2.
    Alternatively, Tenors can sing in head voice up to A5 or higher in rare circumstances.
    Range: The first way to determine if you are a Tenor is to see if you can sing comfortably in the middle of this range from D2 to A4. This is often referred to as your tessitura, meaning your voice has the best and most natural sound quality in a particular range, usually excluding the very extreme edge of your range on either side!
    Tone: A Tenor typically has a brighter and lighter tone with lots of pingy resonance compared to the Baritone and Bass voice types.
    Passaggio: The other way to determine if you are a Tenor is to determine where your “break range” also known as you passaggio is. This is where your voice cracks or with proper training transitions smoothly from chest voice to head voice. A Tenor is typically going to be transitioning out of chest voice into head voice through their passaggio around F#4 or G#4.
    A countertenor is the male equivalent term to a contralto, which is a lower alto and in some cases even the range of a mezzo-soprano voice type. This type of Tenor is going to sing more in head voice than the other types of Tenor subcategories. Although this term was reserved specifically for an older style of music, many contemporary Tenors utilize a lot of head voice singing in their music. For reference, I initially trained Classically as a Leggero and sometimes somewhat Lyric Tenor. Although I did not train Classically as a countertenor, in contemporary music I tend to sing in the countertenor range very often, especially when working with female students.
    Exercises:
    Tenors tend to sing much higher than other lower voice types and traditionally bring their chest voice very high, especially in Classical music. The most important thing to watch for is tension in the jaw and tongue that can accumulate as you try to maintain a bright ringing tone. Don’t let your chin lift up as you sing higher notes as this will close off the resonance from the back of the throat and cause you to push or strain harder. Instead, focus on resonance and low support.
    Tenors can sometimes get obsessed with reaching higher and higher notes, but most important is trying to maintain a full, more grounded tone. An unsupported Tenor can sound very light and thin and an overbearing one sometimes especially nasal or harsh.
    Focus on balancing your brighter tone, by adding some space and cover or darkness to the tone by having ample space and solid support. Otherwise this sound can get annoyingly bright and tight with lots of cracking! Be patient as it can take some time to find release and a rich tone in your higher register.

    And another interesting thing about the tenor voice is that they don't all sound the same. Not all tenors are super light and bright tenors like the narrator in this video. Some tenors may sound like him, but he is an example of a super high tenor. In the world of opera, there are dramatic tenors and heldentenors around along with the more agile lyric and leggero tenors. Also, some tenors have better low ranges than some may stereotype them to have. As a baritone myself, some tenors that I have researched actually have a low range that is only SLIGHTLY weaker than my own. In fact, some of these guys actually have deeper speaking voices than I do.

      I'm yet to identify my voice type. Because of my late start in voice lessons (age of 27, now 33), I had zero idea what type of voice I had and what I was supposed to practice as part of my repertoire. My speaking voice resembles a baritone, but my singing never feels good with lower notes. Though I can't cover my full voice above G# either. Yes, I can hit up to B4 with belting but never with the operatic voice. My voice teacher thinks I need to activate higher tones in time, with patience and practice. It's confusing. Always thought I could cover a nice A by now so I can sing arias like E Lucevan le Stelle, Una Furtiva Lagrima, Vesti La Giubba and such but it hasn't happened yet. Singing a nice A feels miles away, and it feels like I'm doing something wrong after my passaggio takes over around E & F.

      @ZENOBlAmusic 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@sertacsilbastan The speaking voice is not important, because people speak from the throat and you sing from your diaphragm. What is your voice teacher telling you to do after the passaggio? Or more importantly what type of technique are you learning, I am referring to what type of school from opera? Is it mask placement?
      Your teacher is essentially correct, it can take a long time to build up to the higher notes. Look at Franco Corelli who also started very late. He was already singing as a professional tenor for a few before he was able to sing up to C5 and C#5. That being said some tenors just don' really have a high C.

      @sertacsilbastan 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@ZENOBlAmusic Thank you for your response, that's very much appreciated! As to answer your question, my voice teacher always tells me to approach the passaggio with a lighter approach instead of a heavier one - and it works when I'm going towards G#. She mentions that if I'm able to execute a nice vibrato on any given note, the placement is in the right place.
      We don't use terms like mask placement but we are still working towards a connected sound from the lowest note until my highest.
      I'd be okay with not having a lyric tenor range, so I'm not after singing C5. But I should probably be reaching at least B4 during practice to have a nice and rich A4. I have A4, but not covered yet. Funny enough, although we never really practiced any baritone repertoire, my lower notes below C3 are more open now. Maybe not as rich as the greatest baritones, but I can sing F2. When I'm practicing the tenor range, I find myself resonating like Kaufmann, instead of Juan D. Florez. So I definitely have thicker vocal folds, and also my voice has changed recently. People tell me that it sounds lower than what it was 5 years ago. (Vocal puberty lol)

    My range is Eb2-Bb4-Eb5, although sometimes I can go upto A5/Bb5 in Head voice/falsetto but I dont really use it, I am the most comfortable in the F2-F4 range and the Eb2 is not too weak (I can get down to a weak C2 or even a B1 sometimes in the morning) although not too strong either. As for the high notes, I'm not that great with high notes probably due to the lack of technique, My break is around G4, and I am somewhat Consistent upto G4, the the higher notes(G#4, A4, Bb4) are hard and inculcate head resonance but dobable and I can sometimes get a B4 which is not usable yet. My speaking voice is pretty light and sounds like that of a Tenor, but my chest voice is not that strong and I have issues with vocal cord closure so I can either be a High Baritone or a Low Tenor.

    Ask my question here as well as I see this is a newer video than the baritone one.. I think I am in between tenor and baritone?
    anyhow, now to my question that led me to these videos of what is comfortable tone of ones voice ,
    - Do we have one or two tones that our voice no matter we would do voice acting or singing best rests in ??
    I downloaded the app Bandmate tuner as an example and tried to find my natural breath/tone , and then let my voice out and I found that most of the times my voice lands on Bb or A...
    -that is in the bass clef not in the Treble clef of this app...
    what does that mean?
    is there such a thing that ones natural breath of relaxing out air on a tone generates a given note every time for every unique voice??
    that we have one note that is ours so to speak?
    and if that is the case can it help my voice and musical training to for example buy a wind instrument, like a chromatic harmonica in the same key, in the key of Bb in my case and practice my breathing techniques and musical ear training by a chromatic harmonica in specially the same key, Bb, as my voice seems to naturally best rest in?
    hope you see the logic of my question?
    Been thinking to buy a chromatic harmonica as it is beautiful instrument and is also easy to carry with me everywhere..
    people however say, jut get a harmonica in C ....
    - but, as I discovered this natural breath and tone of my voice I got interested to be a bit different in my choices and so came here to ask about these understandings of ones voice and if we do have a note that is our voice's natural note, tone?...
    Hope to hear what you think of my idea!

    I can hit the actual D2, but it sounds like a growl. My passagio is after G4; I'd say it's G#4, but sometimes I can sing Bb4 in the pure chest voice without breaking into falsetto. For some reason, I can't get past D5 in falsetto or in the mixed voice. My voice is not too deep but also not bright. I consider myself a dramatic baritone. Could it be that I'm a dramatic tenor?

    -G4 last couple months ago but my throat hard so i stop this
    But my falsetto range is really huge. I can go down my falsetto to C3 and up to B5( actually to Eb6 but it has strain) i think that was flageolet cause it sounds like a flute and the more higher, the more nasal i become😅.
    And the last part, the whistle register since i lost my whistle for a couple weeks but i got it back🎉🎉
    I can go down to A5 at much (sometimes to G5) and up to A6(C7)

      C2 falls below what a tenor would usually reach since you also need the brighter tone. You may be a baritone with a high range, although range itself is not the only thing to look at when trying to classify where your voice sounds the most natural.

  • @lexsoft3969
    @lexsoft3969 21 день назад

    From what I read in a source, these 2 Queen songs have ranges :
    1. Save Me : up to D5
    2. We Are The Champions : up to C5
    Being a barritone, I have tried to sing these songs, and managed to hit the high notes all using chest voice.
    Still, I think I am not a tenor.

    • @jorgevaladas788
      @jorgevaladas788 10 дней назад

      Being a baritone does not mean you can't reach higher notes. It says more about your tessitura, where your voice sounds the best and most natural, and your break.
      Freddy Mercury would likely be classified as a baritone although he sang mostly in the tenor range and had a great range and very powerful mix/head voice.

    this is not accurate at all. That's a D3 not a D2. The video says the tenor can barely sing below B2, near an octave above D2. This is also inaccurate. A tenor can comfortably sing roughly down to G2 or somewhat lower depending on how low of a tenor they are. I am a lyric tenor with a weak D2 as my absolute bottom. The passaggio is not that far off. A lyric tenor's is G4 and lower tenors can go down to F4.
