Art Journal Prompts Week 19: Take 5 - Inspired by Shannon Green's Journalling by 5's (Mixed Media)

- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- This weeks prompt was inspired by Shannon Green's Journalling by 5's process. I have not restricted myself time wise, but I have followed Shannon's 5 steps to create my page.
The 5 steps are:
1 - Add colour - paint/sprays etc
2 - Add collage elements
3 - Add stamps and stencils
4 - Add words/focal image
5 - Finishing touches - doodling/border etc...
Here is the link to Shannon Green's original Journalling by 5's video: • Journaling By 5s
If you would like to join our fun and supportive Art Journalling group, you will find us on Facebook as Art Journal Prompts
Have fun!!!
It turned out beautiful, love love all the colors and layering
Thank you so much 💕
Love the final results! Adding the larger heart nailed it💖👍☕
Thanks Janice. I think so too 💕
I had more fun watching you create this page. It was a delightful experience to watch you work through the prompts. The final product was just beautiful!
Thank you so much 💕
This is exactly how I love to create. More is better and lots more fun. Restraint escapes me in more ways than one. Love it. -Marsha from Texas
+mmonr Thanks so much Marsha. More is definitely much more fun! 😊
What a fabulous page Nina! Your bantering with yourself had me laughing over my morning coffee. ❤️
LOL! I had no plan whatsoever with this, but I do love how it turned out :) xx
I really enjoyed watching you. I love ❤️ the flower 🌺 stencil. It came out fabulously!!!!!!
+Mags Nash Thank you. This is quite an exciting process because you have absolutely no idea what you will end up with 😊
In the midst of laughing at your talking to yourself, I'm thinking: "HOT MESS. HOT MESS!!!" But, oh my, is this wonderful or what??!! I absolutely love the way this page turned out! It is such a happy page!
+Sherri Reeves Well all I can say is, that was a classic case of falling in a barrel of muck and coming up smelling if roses!!! 😂
So fun and love that you filled the page with more and more and more. When I do that, it is kind of scary, then I think, it's only paper and paint and it truly is being creative. Thank you again Nina for something wonderful.
+Dawn Karasaki Thanks for your lovely comment Dawn. I agree more is much mire fun and exciting!
So delightful to watch you create this amazing page!!! It is beautiful, lovely texture for our eyes! Hugs, Debra!
Thanks Debra, I'm so glad it turned out OK. I wasn't sure it would! Hugs xxx
Brilliant quote...LOVE this page....it is so full, I am waiting for it to start singing---LOL. Thank you Ms. Nina for sharing the delightful process and not giving up! Beautifully done.
+Diane Escoffier The hills are alive ......!!! 🎶🎵🎶. So glad you enjoyed this page Diane 😊. It certainly was full and not much space for anything else. I enjoyed this process - as scary as it was 😬
Your thought process is as jumbled as mine. I love that you share with us. Carry on and be the brave soul that you are. Love it!
Lol! Thanks Jan :) I very rarely have any kind of plan and make things up as I go along. That's why I'm so slow, because I need to step back and ponder on my next move! Whenever I have a plan, it all goes horribly wrong!
that was one of the most beautiful pages ever it's so peaceful and free at least to me it gives me a feeling of well being well done Nina
Thanks for your sweet comment Rayne. It turned out to be a happy page and the colours are gorgeous. Glad you liked it :) x
As I was watching you work through the process, I was thinking, it's like someone who changed their style and then by nature worked back to a style from where they began. Rich and lovely layers have always been your signature. I personally love it ! tfs !
+Patricia Stubbs Thanks so much Patricia. I agree, I too feel as though this has brought me back to my busy, colourful and full style! ❤️
Another beautiful page, Nina. Your perseverance paid off! 😀Tfs. Hugs,Dee xxx
I thought this one might end up in the naughty drawer, lol! tfw, hugs xxx
Ridiculously delightful!!! Loved the process and outcome.
Thank you so much! :)
I absolutely loved being able to watch you think and work through the process of creating this wonderful page. TFS!
+Sheina Sager Thanks so much for your kind comment Sheina 😊
Great page Nina. Shannon Green is the bomb. I am so glad that she is doing limited videos on youtube again. I have missed her being on here. There is so much knowledge in a brain of hers.
+Terri Abrams Thanks Terri. I'm glad Shannon is back too 😊
What a fun and gorgeous page that turned out to be! Love it 😃🔆
Thanks Deborah. So glad you like how it turned out :)
You have had me laughing this morning Nina! So funny listening to your self talk. Lovely page too :)
LOL! I was in stitches playing it back too!
I loved doing journaling by 5s so much fun and freeing. Great page and love the prompt!!!
+Crystal with Art It Out It is incredibly freeing isn't it, although its quite scary too! 😬
Love this! I actually enjoy prompts like this with steps to follow. I chuckled when you were telling yourself to stop over thinking and just get it on the page. I am the same way. I'm sure you aren't the slowest art journaler on the planet. I think that's me.
Thanks Judy. Quite a few of us are claiming the title! :) xx
I really enjoy watching you work through your process while creating your page. I think it turned out great.
Thanks Lori. I had no idea where I was going with this, but I love it!
I love the finished page and the process was fun to watch! TFS Hugs, Beth xoxox
+Beth Salter Thanks so much Beth. I'm glad you enjoyed this process. Hugs xxx
This is a fun approach to creating. Love your busy page . Maybe the five minute rule is to stop "over thinking" but I'm with you there. 5 minutes is just too short a time. Thank you Nina , I think I'll enjoy this week challenge. Love yours.
I think I'd have had a nervous breakdown if I'd been restricted to 5 minutes. I might try it again some time and restrict myself to maybe 15 minutes and see what happens! Glad you enjoyed it, and your page looks great too :)
I love how you kept going inspire of your discomfort. So inspiring!
+Nelda Hinds Thanks so much Nelda. In for a penny, in for a pound - to coin a British phrase! 😊
This was SO fun to watch and I love how you took the JB5 principles and made them work for you! And I'm right there with ya...less is not enough but more is not enough either! Sometimes over the top is just right :)
+Shannon Green Thanks Shannon. Not going to lie, this was stressful, but I'm so glad I did it! Back on a mission now to practically obliterate my pages with more, more, more! 😊
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time (Well, it certainly seemed like it)! It felt like a thriller where right as it looked near the end, something appeared (I was laughing much of the time)! It made me smile about how you just went along with it, I absolutely adore people who don't take themselves too serious. I love the ending though, the finished product is simply delightful to the eyes, a splash of colour I suppose you could say. Can't wait until your next video!
+Karsyn Kilpatrick LOL!!! I felt like that too! I think a process like this becomes very intuitive, and your natural style eventually protrudes! I hope mine did 😊. You've just got to see the funny side and run with it! What will be, will be! 😂
Very true, art is just expressing yourself in the form of colours and symbols. This week, your finished product felt very "you."
Enjoyed watching your process! Turned out wonderful! Thanks so much Nina!
Thanks Susan. I had no idea where I was going with this, but I love how it turned out!
I love it!! The colors are fantastic! Very inspiring! TFS!
Thanks Cyndia :)
Such a happy page! I loved watching your process.
+Barb Owen - HowToGetCreative.com Thanks so much for watching Barb, and I'm glad you liked this completely haphazard page 😊
I thoroughly enjoyed your video this week... the layout process and finished artwork is ridiculously delightful! thanks for sharing and have a great day!
+Sue Bouch Thanks so much Sue. Really glad to hear you enjoyed this ridiculous process! So much fun! 😊

I love this page, great job Nina.
Thanks Yolanda 💕
Interesting process and I loved listening to you as you worked through it. Love all of the texture! TFS, Nina!
Thanks Gail. This turned out to be quite a fun process :)
I Love it.. Just amazing to see start to finish ,
Blows me away the creativity the quote is Perfect..
+Ann Alba Thanks so much Ann. For me, this has brought me back to my roots. Lots and lots of colour, and lots and lots of layers. This is such an intuitive process, and Imwould encourage anyone to try it 😊
You can't be the slowest art journaler because that title goes to me :-) Your page came out lovely and the process was great which is what really counts. Have a great week! Oh and Happy Mother's Day!
Haha! I think many of us are claiming this title :):)
Nope! That has to go to me! Lol I followed a person's 30 minute tutorial for a collage. It took me a few hours over a week's time to follow the steps before mine was complete! That time included a lot of overthinking; second guessing; and do-overs. Lol 😊
jb5s is totally crazy😄 I'll be happy to have another go with no time limit. I love the way you just kept going😄 And it turned out lovely. Great the way you put the small hearts into a big one. I'll have to remember that trick😊
I think my intuitive self just took over! I love how this turned out :)
Wow Nina you did it. What a great page. I can't believe how you kept going even when I thought oh no how is she going to make this work. LOL I think I might have given up but seeing you keep going and then how it ultimately turned out wonderfully I applaud you. TFS
+Mary Ann Oosterman Thanks so much Mary Ann. I can't believe how scary this was, but I learnt so much from it and I'm glad I persevered! No pain, no gain as they say 😬
Loved watching this....turned out really nice!
+Joyce Thatcher Thanks so much Joyce 😊
Very nice! The marbled scrap paper was very eye catching. I even played back that part. TFS
Thanks Steph, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
So many layers! Pretty page, Nina.
Thanks Lisa :)
Wow Nina, that's a very busy page for you, but the colours are absolutely gorgeous and it turned out beautiful xx
Thanks Tracey. I love how this turned out. Haven't done a busy colourful page like this in ages! xxx
It turned out great Nina ! Tfs love the touches of pink
+katherine benjamin Thanks Katherine. I do love a touch of pink - even the unintentional, lol!
Love this page, loved doing Shannon's Journalling by five process when it came out so hope when i get to this prompt it will be just as good tfs big hugs Caroline xxx
+Caroline Withington You are much braver than me Caroline. This is the first time have plucked up the courage to step up to the mark! Hugs xxx
Well done Nina ... good at the finish line .... :) Thank you . x
Oh my goodness, I really don’t like being rushed 😂😂😂 xx
Lovely. You may take time for your pages, but your end results are wonderful. So keep pondering on and thank you for sharing.
I certainly will :) I need time to think things through. I never have a plan in mind, so I need time to stand back and think about my next move :)
Lovely. I watched Shannon the other day and this turned out great.
+Peg Robinson Thanks so much Peg 😊. I hope you will try this too 😊
This was definitely inspiring - as before you highlighted the hearts I think my eyes were wide and my mouth was open :O - yet at the end it looks ridiculously delightful. :) Thanks so much for sharing the process!
+Donna Williamson Yes, I must admit I thought it was doomed at one point, but there
Is nearly always a way back 😊
That last heart you traced really brought it all together. And the words are perfect too!
+Kim Daniel Thanks Kim! So glad I was able to bring this together! 😊
I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but by the end you ended up with a beatiful art journal page. TFS Nina.
+Laura Murphy Thank you. I wasn't sure how this would end up either, lol! 😊
I loved watching your process I think it's great and your a delight to listen too. I'm glad I happened across your Chanel
Hugz n Smilz
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Ronda. I'm glad you found me :) Hugz n Smilz to you too!
You created a delightful page. I found it funny to hear you second guessing yourself though as you always are so confident. It would have taken me all day and it wouldn't look as nice as yours.
+Susan Rascone Thanks so much Susan. This whole process felt so unnatural, but its a great way to tap into your intuitive self and not realise you are doing it! 😊
Love it, and you are so funny to listen to, I just can understand how you feel during te process.
I had absolutely no idea where I was heading with this, but I love how it turned out! It certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Hi Nina, I thought wow that background is very busy but it turned out lovely. Can't wait to try this . Tfs Marina :))
Thanks Marina. I had no plan whatsoever with this one, but I love how it turned out :)
Wow I love how this turned out, tfs Nina, I love d doing Journaling by 5's
I have put off doing this for so long! It was fun though and I love how the page turned out! Thanks Maggie :)
I love watching your videos.
Thank you!
Good morning nina, you were so amusing in this video...talking to yourself, telling yourself to let go, not to be ridicilous. Getting lost, but just go on and that is what is important and then in the end your iintuition leads the way.. and even nothing is lost when it is not what you thought it had to be. When you used the stabilo I had to think of lorrimarie jenkins, she always activates it with her spit( ha ha) she is master in letting go. Well this was not ridiculous, but fun, resulting in a happy page. Sending you a hug and wish you a ridicilously nice sunday love lenaxxx
Good morning Lena, I really was all over the place with this and totally out of my comfort zone. I was very happy with it in the end and love the bright colours. Hope you have a fabulous week. Love and hugs, Nina 💕 xxxx
Your page turned out quite beautiful in the end Nina! It just goes to show that getting out of our comfort zone can be liberating and surprising. Tfs Big hugs Ginny xo :o)
I love the way this page turned out, but I was a bit worried during the process! Thanks for watching Ginny. Hugs xox
This page turned out fantastic! I love jb5, I've done it twice. Tfs, Fia xx
Thanks Fia. I'm so glad I tried this :) xx
Lol,,,,yes I loved this Nina , was very busy but you brought it round to a lovely page ,,,.xxxx
Thanks so much Annie. I was just keeping my fingers and toes crossed all the way through! xxxx
The addition of the white flowers added some much needed contrast. I may try this when I want to do something and just don't have an inspiration to run with. The first times I saw this in use, the process was used in small timed sessions for an entire journal! I do not remember who did this, but two individuals did one step and sent their journals off for the second step to each other, third and fifth steps were back with the original artist. I found it so funny to observe that the final step of doodling became a no time limit, oh let's say, we need to make this page work. It ended up being filled pages of stuff, instead of either journaling or art. The way you went about it was stretching your boundaries and keeping you moving forward. It would not work all the time, especially for me, since it would be too much like cookbook art without self expression. Personally, I am fine with you or anyone being drawn to use certain colors, that is part of an emotional response. I would be concerned if you suddenly switched to all deep and dark colors, that would be screaming a very sad Nina. You did end up with a lovely addition to your journal. Do you like doing your pages separate of your journal and adding them once they are completed? I will be making a couple journals from scratch in about a month, and I am debating between types of paper to make it from. I don't want to use watercolor or mixed media paper, if I am just gluing other paper on top. On the other side of things, if I want to have open two page spread as my working surface then the paper needs to be high quality.
I tried to be authentic with this and had no plan whatsoever. I think my intuitive self took over and I love how it turned out :)
Love, love, LOVE this! :-) ♡
+4kiitieslady 😊 Thank you 😊
I have done the journaling by 5's before and it is nerve wracking but fun as well...keeps you from the over thinking...great page
I tried to be authentic with this and had no plan whatsoever. I think my intuitive self took over and I just went with it and love how it ended up :)
Lol,I was feeling your fear and in pain with you the all process 😂😂😂like wen we watch some movies and pray for the good guys to win 😂😂😂😂😂😂,LOVE IT! BEAUTIFUL! BRAVE GIRL! THANK YOU FOR SHARING.💖
+Laura Orta 😂. OMG Laura, throughout that whole process I was thinking what the heck are you doing! At around 10 minutes it was looking a complete mess so I had nothing to lose by throwing even more at it 😂. Good job I don't take myself too seriously. I laughed my socks off whilst I was editing the video 😂
😘😘😘😘
you are so inspiring....love it.....awesome
Thanks so much Laura :)
Oh my goodness! I can see me ending up with a right mess 😂.I spent hours layering and changing my page from last week, and def would not be able do a page in 5 mins.I'm like you, takes me ages as I am so indecisive lol.Now that def looks like a 'Nina' page with the colours etc.Love the finished page 😄X
I had so much fun doing this Lynda. I had no plan whatsoever, but I love how it turned out! :) xx
Finished page! I love this Nina.x
+lizianne Thanks Mom 😊
Sometimes utter chaos can be so beautiful.
+Kathy AKA Dragonfly Smiles Thanks so much Kathy 😊
Love love this piece!
+Karine Sackney Thanks so much Karine 😊
that came out so nice Nina. Shannon's JB5s helped me so much in designing my art journal pages. thank you so much for doing this - i still make JB5 pages but no timing!! just to have fun and to learn : )
+Janet Visochi-Baum This was such a good process for me to try Janet. I over think everything, and whilst I still did that with this page, I also had to problem solve, rather than give up 😊
wow love this page!! great to see how it came together :)
Thanks so much Preeti, glad you enjoyed it :)
Awesome ,I really like it a lot ,it's a full page .
+Donna L. Hanrahan Thanks Donna! 😊😊😊
Love it love it love it!
+Dana House Thanks so much Dana! 😊
I love how you created a focal image out of nothing--magic! I enjoy making backgrounds but struggle with coming up with focal images to finish the page--here you did it with nothing but a stabilo pencil?!?!?!? :-) I'll have to give this a try.... Thanks for sharing your process, even with it involved a lot of going in circles (makes me feel like maybe I can do this too). Love your final page.
Well Done Nina. I wrote down the By 5s steps ages ago but have been too scared to try it! It's tough to do all stages in one go. For myself inspiration for words and doodles take several days to arrive. I wasn't sure at first but the borders really make it and the Quote is fabulous. Great page. Mx
+Mandy G Thanks so much Mandy 😊. You just have to go with the flow with this process. I would definitely recommend it. Yes, its quite scary, but you release your true style I think. And you just have to keep going and not give up!
Thank you Nina - You have given me an idea. I could use the A4 Notebook have used as a Clean Up Book; as the pages have stood up to the paint OK there is no need to stick any together and I do have a lot of images I could choose around 40 or 50 and do the 20 pages at once thing for the first 2 steps. Take my time for the other 3 steps. There are no Rules to stop us adapting the Idea to suit ourselves as you showed in you lovely video. Thanks again for all you Tips and Ideas.
This turned out beautifully! Would love to have the talent to layer as you do! Will definitely try the 5 steps method!
Thanks Judi. You just have to go for it. With layers, more is more, there are no half measures or it just looks unfinished.
I was fearful lol....but it came out beautifully! Hugs xxx
So was I!!! Hugs xxx
I love it! I would like to give this a try. I like the idea of going through the steps. Hopefully I will get a chance this week.
It's a lot of fun Amy - complete madness! :)
Wow Nina! I love how it turned out! This is a piece I wish I could see in person, because I'm sure the more you look at it, the more you see...
Hugs Marsha
+ZeeCee Creations Thanks Marsha. The texture is wonderful and I love how it turned out 😊
Good to see how you layer up the page, although at one point I thought it was going to end badly but you pulled it out of the bag, great finished page.
+Jackie Elliott I haven't created a colourful busy page like this for such a long time and it was so much fun!
It did turn out delightful. I also wondered where you were headed! lol
I think my intuitive self took over and came to the rescue!
Loved your line: "More is more" :)
Haha, I just had to keep going!
Out looks bright and happy :) :)
+Sweety Gupta Thanks Sweety 😊
That was fun, Nina!
Thanks Lyn. I'm glad it turned out OK!
I really want to try this! It turned out lovely.
Thanks Karen :)
Nina, this was so enjoyable! Thank you. It's on my agenda for a panel I already have started.❣
Thanks Dianne. Glad you enjoyed it. Have fun creating yours too! :)
love the layers!
Thanks Ineke :)
Pretty! You pulled it together very well. :)
Thanks so much Itaya :)
I love love this I like you think far too much but I’m going to have a go thanks so much for all your inspiration love to watch you work thanks Wendy Cunningham x
Thanks so much Wendy. Happy Creating 💕
I would've been a nervous wreck, you did a lovely job pulling it all together.
+inks4fun Its quite a frantic process, but boy does it teach you a lot! Definitely worth a try! 😊
I really enjoyed watching the layering process. I was, for a time wondering where this was going but I really love the finished page. the challenge now is to take 5 and run with it. tfs
+Margaret Hope Thanks Maggie. Believe me, I was too! I added that final layer of pink and thought, well you've well and truly sealed its fate now Nina! I had nothing to lose by throwing even more at it by that point, lol. Funny how we feel compelled to do things. Its certainly a lesson in not giving up 😂
I had a look at Shannon's video too, and it's excellent advice! Tried it out, with reasonable success. Still struggling with using stencils and acrylic paint and texture paste. Must try and get better at this. Thanks for sharing.
Its all a matter of practice Helen, and this is a fun way to experiment :)
I love this. Thank you.
Thanks so much Ankna :)
It is beautiful, love it
Thanks Gayle :)
WELL I THANK THAT IT WAS WONDERFUL I LOVE IT
+mary whitaker Thanks so much Mary 😊
that's great how it turned out!!!
+sagala40 Thank you 😊
Nina, this is a really beautiful page. Thank you for sharing your ideas and your process with us. I haven't used dylusions paints yet, but I have seen Peg Robinson spray a small amount of distilled water into her jars before she closes them back up. Maybe that would help??? Anyway, thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Mary Ellen. I have been spraying mine with water too, but unfortunately it hasn't stopped some of them drying out. Such a shame as I won't be buying them again!
Thx for sharing. I like this layout very much
Thanks so much for your kind comment :)
Very pretty and spring-like. I didn't do the minutes either when following Shannon Green's Journaling by 5's process, because I can't think that fast under pressure, however, using her method, it was the quickest artist trading cards I ever made before (I belong to an ATC swap group).
Thanks Dolores. It was certainly a lot of fun, and something I would definitely try again.
This turned out terrific tfs
+The Shelley Studio Thanks so much Margel! It was quite nerve wracking!
