  • Very close game and series. Canada had home ice advantage and got breaks from the referee, and so this allowed them the narrow victory.

I remember watching the 1987 Canada Cup on Television. As far as I am concerned the Soviet Coach Viktor Tikhonov was 100% correct when He said that the officiating was biased against the Soviet Union Team! The Soviets were being penalized much more often than Team Canada was and when the Canadian Team made an obvious Penalty MANY of those were not called on Canada! During 5 on 5 situations I could see that with the creative style of play that Soviets were using that they were outplaying Team Canada and if the officiating was not so biased against the Soviets Team Canada would have definitely lost that series.

I'm from Moscow, and I was 12 back in '87. This finals were the greatest hockey I've ever seen, in spite of Canada win. Lineup of greatest players from both sides. And the day after, when we came out on the playground to play in "Makarov-Semak-Gusarov- Coffey-Lemieux-Gretzky-etc." we felt that yesterday something happened, that will never be repeated. We were overwhelmed with emotions. Thanks for reminding me of these days.

Koharski was not calling much against Canada, but sent the Soviets to the box whenever there was a chance to call something. This allowed Canada to come back and win.

Wow ! Goosebumps. I remember watching this when I was 13 years old and being on the edge of my seat the whole time! What blows me away is how much clutching a nd grabbing/interference WASNT called back then. Virtually every goal had a potential penalty(in todays NHL) on the play, and this was still the most entertaining hockey I'ver ever seen in spite of that! Kinda makes you wonder.

That is the sad thing, that almost all of the goals scored by Canada were a result of questionable plays or calls. Koharski gave Canada chances and let them get away with offenses. For a good team like Canada, that was enough.

I'm from Sweden and watched the games on television. It was the greatest offensive hockey ever. I remember that I got the "feeling" that the officials was "kind" to the hometeam Canada. Maybe the swedish commentators built that "feeling" in a way - but when you look at it - the fact is, that the referees accept hard play from both sides. The whole discussion (common in Europe) was a overreaction and today, I can honestly say that Canada was a great team with hardness, speed and great offense.

That's a pretty biased interpretation. "Lemieux's defender"? You mean, a guy in the neutral zone who may or may not have ended up anywhere near Lemieux when he got the puck mere seconds later. Meanwhile, I notice you didn't mention the Makarov hook on Bourque that indisputably led to the Soviets' fourth goal.

Murphy never touched the puck. Hawerchuk took the faceoff (didn't really win it, despite what the commentator said, the puck just sat there), Lemieux picked it up and poked it past the defenceman and then passed it up to Grekzky, who dropped it back to Lemieux who scored.

Forget the 1972 series. THIS was the greatest game Canada ever played. The Hawerchuk-Gretzky-Lemiuex rush is the greatest goal Canada has ever scored. Far be it for me to overstate things, but the Soviet Union was never the same after this defeat. Sure, they lost in '72, but by '87 the Russian propaganda machine couldn't cover the fact that the vaunted CCCP wasn't a nation of supermen. Lose at hockey? What else might we lose? The Cold War? :)

Hockey work that way. That is why ref's are not always wrong in judging the flow of the game, cause, they see "off screen" things- You go to a game, and get a clearer picture on what is happening. There are plays that the Soviets got away with* on screen as well*, it all evens out.
I was at those games, and I saw them on replay. The games were called just fine. Mistakes are made in a ton of games, that is a given.

For example, look at Canada's roster in 82:
Reinhart, Hartsburg, van Boxmeer, Lowe, Maxwell, Giles, Napier, Clarke, Sittler, Vaive, Gretzky, Barber, Gainey, B. Smith, Ciccarelli, Gartner, Hawerchuk, Propp, Maloche(G), Millen(G).

    What knee hit?
And Bourque probably did not dive, but it looks like he fell by himself, as the commentators said. That tap by Makarov on the tip of his jersey was not going to take him down.
However, I remember hearing that Bourque had a habit of diving in his own zone sometimes.

    @Potts132
The stuff that matters is the tournament that has the best against the best. In the Olympics since the "PRO's" Started going beginning in 98, we are the only team to repeat. IN 02 and in 2010. The trend continues. If we send our pro's we will win. The Canada Cup was the ultimate test since all the world had time to put their best against the best of Canada.

  • @nthdegree1269

Why? I was there in person, and watched them when the "vhs" was out over and over again. Look, when the United States won in '96, there were some foolish calls. I can name a whole bunch of games, but never in my life would I suggest that caused a certain team to loose. I have been watching hockey live since 1968 starting at the Montreal Forum. Its a fast game, calls are missed, its part of the game and always has been. Canada was the better team in '91 '87 '84 '76--

They had a way to communicate; that is not an excuse.
Of course Koharski would not call a major on Canada, even though it could have been called here.
And it is not that only a major could come from the linesman. In the round robin game, the NHL linesman told the referee to call a bench minor on the Soviets, because he was supposedly held by someone from their bench.

was there ever a collection of greater players (on both sides) to play a series? canada had some of the greatest NHL players of all time time; USSR had some the greatest international players of all time. im not canadian, but im a hockey fan, and I think that last goal is the greatest goal I have ever seen given the moment, the players on the ice(both sides), comeback from 3-0, GW Lemieux/Gretz. was there a better series? Just watched the first period of the game. Koharski made a panalty call out of nothing when two Russians were breaking out 2 on 1. This was when Canada was trailing 3:0 and the first goal was scored. And if u look at the goal, the Russian goalie is hit/speared in the mask before the goal.

On the second goal, Tochett was doing the manhandling; first he grabbed and then elbowed the Soviet defenseman.
Not sure what you mean about the fourth goal.
During the fifth goal, you don't see the clear stick hold behind the net?
