I look forward to this day and the Hennessy in Feb. 2 great days. My first time going to Champion stakes was in 1992 when Dr Devious beat St Jovite in an epic battle, I missed the High Chapparal race as I was at Landsdown road for an Ireland match. My favorite champion stakes was Azamour coming from a very tough position to win at the line under a vintage Kinane ride. I will also remember Sea the stars walk past us and he is one magnificent beast.
Personally I think high chapparel's effort was probably the best because of the quality of horses he had behind him. Alamshar, islington, moon ballard and falbrav weren't mugs by any standards
I can always say that I was there, when F/light and Galileo fought out that great finish, I was gutted when Galileo was beaten that day,but what a race
Galileo returned the favor in the King George, similar race but Gailieo pulled away in the last furlong. Fantastic Light was no slouch, a european champion AND a world champion, beat mila and timboroa in america in his last race breeders cup
Galileo has done good as a sire, Decorated Knight, the most recent winner of the Irish Champion Stakes in 2017. Horse best known for siring the unbeaten Frankel.
@@boogiestreet594 champion stakes got weight for age and was before champion. fantastic light beat Galileo giving weight was annihilated by Montjeu who gave him weight.
As said by others, a great race, by far and away my favourite flat race. Whereas I could not argue with the number 1 choice, High Chap is my personal favourite, a brilliant horse. Whereas, the fantastic light win was the greatest race I have seen!
Personally I think high chapparel's effort was probably the best because of the quality of horses he had behind him. Alamshar, islington, moon ballard and falbrav weren't mugs by any standards. And if I remember rightly, this race was his 1st in his 4 year old season
The 2016 renewal of the Irish Champion Stakes was a classic example of it, Group 1 winners all over the place including an Epsom Derby and an Oaks Winner. The Grey Gatsby pipping Australia is another example of the race's history and Dr Devious and St Jovite in 1992. The 2018 renewal between Roaring Lion and Saxon Warrior was also a close finish.
The 2016 renewal was some race. You had Minding, Harzand, Highland Reel, Found (who ran in the 2015 renewal behind Golden Horn before beating the Derby winner in the Breeders Cup Turf) and Almanzor, the actual winner from France. Oh, the 2014 renewal where two Derby winners, The Grey Gatsby beat Australia right on the line, similar to that of the 1992 renewal where Dr Devious beat St Jovite.
So this race usually attracts horses that have won or have been placed in a Group 1 race such as the Epsom Derby and Sandown's Eclipse Stakes. I remember Sea The Stars, the undisputed champion of 2009 winning that year and the 2011 renewal features at this stage between So You Think and Snow Fairy.
i cannot agree with this Top 10 and suave dancer in 3rd place. Pilsudski would be in the three as would Galileo v Fantastic Light. international classification ratings clarify this.
New Approach was a right bugger of a ride wasn't he? Well done to Kevin Manning for wrestling him to victory when the horse obviously did not want to co-operate.

Pilsudski, Daylami and Sea The Stars.. they stood out for me.. Although Galileo/Fantastic Light was the most entertaining of course..
We've come to see a star the perfect prescription of sea the stars

won the royal whip before it
Great compilation! High Chaparral has to be much higher in the list though.
All top races but the Fantastic Light - Galileo race is the one for me.Epic finish.
This would have to just about be the best 10f race in the world.

2002 was some line up. High chaparral won it. Falbrav should have won it. Islington could have won it. Even moon ballad had a squeak. What a race.

what a collection of greats! Sea the Stars at the top and rightly so,but the most exciting race of all for me has to be Fantastic light and Galileo
That was a King George classic shown way before I was born and still remembered to this day.
Cannot believe Azamour's win is not in this collection
some magic horses there
Falbrav should have won.

Dylan Thomas was the best I'd say
Fantastic Light should be #1 without any doubts
Love the way that British horses are named after famous literary figures. Could you find a place for Orwell?
New Approach was a right bugger of a ride wasn't he? Well done to Kevin Manning for wrestling him to victory when the horse obviously did not want to co-operate.
think i wud put new approach at least in my top 5
Ouija Board was some filly..
What a gallant run behind Dylan Thomas
sea the stars Is the best
Daylami beats anyone in that list, the great grey rocket...
