  • Top Tips for Florists - Heliconia
Hi, everyone. Janette here from Kay's Flower School. And today's top tips, we're going to talk about Heliconias. Normally, when you're buying them wholesale, you can buy them individually, you don't have to buy them by the box. Again, you can buy different lengths, but they're normally a tall stem on them. They last about 14 days, no problem, but you could get a little bit longer.
The problem with these is if they get too cold. You will find, any temperature under 13 degrees, you find it'll start to go black. So maybe around 15 degrees Celsius is perfect for keeping your Heliconia fresh. They do drink lots and lots of water, so make sure that you top the vase up regular. But also they're a quite heavy flower so it's important that the container is sturdy, that it doesn't topple over.
Like all tropical flowers, they like to be kept misted and that keeps up the humidity in them. You can remove the plastic sleeve that's protecting the head. And again, using a strong secateurs, you can cut the stems. You know what I mean? Two to three centimeters on a 45 degree angle. But it is possible to cut them every second day or so. The more you cut them, the more moisture and more water to hydrate the stems. And you will find they last that little bit longer. So even the following day, even to just take less than a centimeter off the following day, just to make them soak up more water.
They are a fabulous flower. They look well. I haven't removed the plastic off this one, even to use them in, again, linear arrangements. Tall, vertical contemporary displays. They are very, very dramatic. Probably not a popular wedding flower. Probably more for flower arrangements are even centerpieces for churches. They love that warmer atmosphere. So again, if you're looking for an ideal flower, maybe for a nursing home or for a hotel, that's going to last for ages, probably the Heliconia. Also part of the family is the Heliconia Pendula where they'll have a train. I don't have any here at the moment, but I will source them. And again, I'll do a little video on it.
If you do have any questions, post them in the comments below and I will respond to everyone. And follow us on RUclips for more of our top tip videos.
