Totally empathize with that last couple minutes. Pat the Bunny has a great line in a song: "I hate strangers, loud noises, and crowds, but I'll play a show every night." I completely relate.

The whole thing is fascinating. The jam sessions seem to be permanently on the brink of incomprehensible chaos - nothing like this where I live (East Kent, UK), only open mike nights. I don't have much exposure to jazz, your videos are like a key to a private musicians club, it's a privilege to be able to glimpse inside. Keep doing the videos with music as the pivotal element!

I completely understand the introverted thing. I'm a songwriter and have over the years written what I think are some pretty good songs. No one hears them, though, because I find it profoundly painful and nerve-wracking to expose myself in that way. I give you a lot of credit for pushing through it. It's the only way to get to the other side. I enjoy your videos immensely, man - so much music and so much jazz!

I'd say people like seeing anything that's honest and genuine; I love your candour and courage! Isn't there a whole load of pop psychology about bands and the different roles in them?! I suspect the motivation for a lot of musicians is to communicate with others their loves and passions without the awkwardness of real life and problems. I'm definitely somewhat of an introvert too (amateur drummer). A drumset is a great way of having an immovable "barrier" between me and a crowd! I want to connect but I'd rather be in the corner helping others to dance if I can.

Introverted musician life - so relatable.
I think I'm an emotionally expressive person, but that I need to spend a lot of time in the peacefulness of my thoughts in order to feel in balance.
I really like composition, in part because it allows me to engage with the creative process in my own space. I think practicing is also a pretty introvert-friendly activity.
I did have a gig this spring where I was sat for part of the evening with some politicians, and I was so socially exhausted by the end of it, I just wanted to cry. I think I will regretfully have a scheduling conflict if I'm asked to do that gig next year.
More commonly, I'll come home from a gig and just feel very done. It's not always possible for me to check out when I come home because I'm a mom, but I decompress as much as I can and minimize the expectations I put on myself.
I think music is a language and a joy that is meant for everyone, not just for people who love nights out. There shouldn't be pressure for anybody to fit a certain mold in order for their social engagement or their musical expression to be valuable. We are the way we are, and life is richer for its variety.

Damn, you guys are so lucky over there, great jam sessions ! spontaneous Get together sessions have become extremely rare here in Europe. I love the ‚winging it‘. nature of that main jam you covered, but lately that‘s been a problem when vocalists come on and just skate around forever trying to find their award winning moment when instrumentalists want to hone their craft. I think that songwriter format is more suited to them which would allow for a more focused environment for singers. Keep em coming, it‘s great to be taken along for the ride.

I love watching you push yourself out of your comfort zone. That has always been something I have had trouble doing. As a former music major myself I could read, but playing by ear and improvising was way beyond my abilities - I could hear in my mind what I wanted but just couldn't get it to come out of the other end of the horn.
It's great seeing a young person with talent stretching and putting themselves out there. Can't wait for the day when I can tell people, "I remember watching his RUclips videos when he was just starting out." Good luck to you and keep up the good work.

It is a funny thing how extroverts end up singers and instrumentalists tend to be introverted. We just end up "acting extroverted" when needed and hand the mic to the extrovert, they love it. Personally I have a great voice but never want to be on stage without a horn to protect myself from the audience.

This was great. Thanks for posting. Here, close to Málaga in Spain, we have a jam that's very like this. Everyone just joins in when they've got something to say. Our usual singers are very good at leaving space for solos though. I'm a clarinet player who doubles a bit on alto. Not pro, just a hobby. Over time we've formed into an impromptu horn section with two tenors, me and a flute player. There's a lot of Spanish musicians (obviously) and we also play a lot of Spanish music, which is a totally different ball game.
Thanks again for posting this Frankie. It's always great to see a real professional in action.

This is an interesting demonstration of how different people's experiences vary as musicians - as a more intermediate player who finds the free improvised jams the easiest thing to do (there's a weekly one in my city so I get regular practice at it), it's surprising to see a far more experienced player treating it as something they're not so used to

Very interesting jam sessions... not like any jazz jams I've ever been a part of, where people take turns calling tunes. As for being introverted, that's what it means: you recharge from time alone. Half the world is this way, so nothing wrong with you! The world is often geared toward social interaction, so in order to thrive, sometimes you need to say no to some things or otherwise actively plan some alone time. It's okay to do this. You can still deeply love people, both individually and in the abstract.

    • @FoolishFrankie

University of North Texas. I guess I could just say North Texas and it would be more clear (I think the school used to be called North Texas State anyways) but it was UNT while I was there

It depends on your situation, I always recommend going to a local music shop and trying instruments before anything else!

I've been told Nashville is one of the main hub places right now for working musicians, did you get that vibe from your time there?

    • @FoolishFrankie
      @FoolishFrankie  2 месяца назад +1

I’ve heard that too. I definitely got the vibe that there is a TON of stuff happening, especially for the size of the city. But it feels like there’s a proportional amount of musicians. Not really sure how much work there is since I’m not actively playing in the scene. That might change though!

do something else if you want to make money😂

that's kind of a lame response, but don't pursue anything for solely monetary reasons. Otherwise my advice is find the thing you find most meaningful in life and pursue it relentlessly.
