    In this video I walk through the common issues to look for when considering buying an #E53 #X5 BMW SUV. This was BMW's first SUV ever! This "SAV" as BMW called it was a "Sport Activity Vehicle" not an "SUV". In this video I review the basic things to look for in the exterior, interior and engine and transmission while shopping for a cheap used X5 of this generation.

    2005 4.4i owner here. had mine 7 years. i’ve done everything you can imagine. valve seals, coolant transfer pipe, you name it. still love the car and still cheaper than a $700 a month car payment for a new car with the same features

    • @scottw5315
      @scottw5315 Месяц назад

      Valve stem seals cost me $4500. Coolant transfer pipe was just done by a friend and $200 part. Door handles, window regulators, brake booster, transfer case, AC which I think just needed a charge which I tried to do myself and did it wrong, they got me for $2000. I've spent 20k in eleven years. I did a few jobs myself in particular the brake booster that the dealer wanted $3500 to repair. It's been frustrating but it drives amazing and there is nothing else on the market that catches my eye.

    I own a '05 X5 since new. N62. Pretty shitty that you only point out negatives. What about the positives? Great community over at xoutpost, really not too many problems aside from regular maintenance (cooling system), suspension, brakes, etc. Im on original door handles & regulators. Pano & auto fold in mirrors work. Transfer case gear never replaced. Parts relatively cheap. The only, & only thing this car hit us with was the valve stem seals. When this was addressed the timing cover gaskets were also resealed. This is an amazing car if you can DIY & it drives awesome. No TPMS sensors, no need to register the battery, simple macpherson suspension. Dont get the impression that I baby the car either. I abuse the daylights out of it, infact if you see an idiot in one around NYC, its more then likely me...

    I have a 20 year old X5 and the original bowden cables haven't stretched and haven't been replaced until the carrier metal actually snapped due to fatigue from all the years of being opened.
    The bigger problem is the spring on the door lock catch, it rusts and breaks making the cable feel like it isn't working properly, a quick inspection of the lock mechanism will usually show if the spring is there or not as it needs to keep tension on the ball joint that the bowden cable connects to or the cable will not 100% do its job correctly plus over time the lock mechanism stops springing open as you pull either the handle or where the cable connects showing that the lock mechanism should be replaced so it springs open correctly instead of relying on the door being pulled to release the mechanism.

    One question for you: Is it worth going for an E70 as opposed an E53 these days? What would the benefits be to the E70? I absolutely love the styling (and relative simplicity) of the E53, and am considering that route.That said, I appreciate your opinion!

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  2 года назад +3

      It depends, you can find bargain E53 pricing still out there. The E70 is usually 2X the initial purchase price. The F15 that came in 2014+ is again often 2X the price of an E70. Yet the E70 and F15 share the same chassis. Drive both… we like the E70 much much better. But it is so far proving to be a money pit like the rest of them. And 16.3 MPG to boot.

I mean seriously they sell copper nickel line rolls for like $25 and you can do the entire car…..bro you aren’t looking in the right places for repair advice. And no there isn’t a 100% chon the door carriers. I’ve had e53s longer than you’ve been alive and never did one. Now the window clips sure, but those are $1 on eBay for a 2 pack (or were pre covid)

Seriously man I think you should buy a Lexus GX or sequoia, it won’t cause you to be financially destitute. But seriously man look around more for better DIY ideas, lots of parts can be rebuilt and components replaced. I rebuild my own PSE pumps on Mercedes and starters on Porsche (literally you just lube a gear after taking it apart). Also the junkyard is your friend. All old BMW's I have owned it has not been window regulators that are the issue, it is the plastic clips on the window runners that cost literally a couple of GBP from the dealer.
    You are making it sound like the motors are the issue which would be far more expensive to fix, especially for those without a clue about mechanics.

      BIMMER ZEIT .... I know right. Since 2002 my BMW Z3 M roadster has had 2 in both door and 3 tops for a car that lives in the garage I don’t even have 90k on it. I live 1.5 miles from work for all that time beside 2 years with a 15 miles drive. Wish some aftermarket upgrades would come out because mine are popping again which means not long until I need another sets.

      fryrear technology ugh! Such a pain. Honestly I think sometimes it is luck of the draw which cars are trouble free (like my friend’s 530i) and which cars are borderline lemon status 🍋

    Over $1000 for brake line replacements, holy hell, what are they, gold plated!!!
    I can replace all my brake lines for less than £200 GBP, even buying from a dealer the pre made brake lines will not set me back more than £400 GBP and it isn't just salt from roads that is the issue, brake fluid is hygroscopic and the lines can rot from the inside out which is usually the case as the factory paint on the brake lines is pretty thick.
    I can actually make copper brake lines for around £60 for the whole vehicle.

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  9 месяцев назад

      The brake line costs are replacements from two separate brake line failures if I recall correctly. That is like two $400+ repair bills at a local shop who replaced the rotted section for us. Can't always DIY when you and your spouse both work full time. Sometimes just have to pay the shop.
      The E53 has a known design flaw where the plastic trim covering brake lines traps salty water from heavily salted New England roads and eats them alive.

    Bmws are actually very underappriceated. As a german luxury car and it beign old of course it is going to cost to run. But it is a one tme experience everyone must try.
    The reason these beign unreliable is because of the abuse they recieve, as we all know a very bad demographic buys these.
    These cars should be appriceated more, they are fun and truly an one time experience. The diesels especially are known to be workhorses that last forever (3.0l diesel one specifically in this one)
    I really cant say much about the newer modern ones but the ones from this era are truly legendary and special cars.

    As a 3.0L, you shouldn't be spending $13k to keep it running. That's insane.

      Here’s the spreadsheet with costs video: ruclips.net/video/JkpaOVuoKQY/видео.html
      Also it was $7800 in repairs over 5 years; the $13k figure was the total cost of ownership including initial purchase price.

      @@BIMMERZEITT Still very steep ownership cost. I have a 4.8is Dinan S1 signature X5 which I bought as a non-runner (electrical issues, runs fine now). I justify dumping money into it since it's a relatively rare car. Some of the items on your list seem to be including labor. $500+ for brakes and a gas cap? Incidentally, if you do the spark plugs, replace all of the coils while you're at it.

USING IT IN NIGERIA NOW AND ALL IT HAS COSTED ME IS BRAKE PAD CHANGES, REGULAR OIL CHANGES E.T.C YES I CHANGED MY WATER PUMP AND ALL WHEN I GOT IT CUZ I WAS SCARED BY VIDEOS LIKE YOURS ON THE TUBE, BUT THEY WERENT EVEN BROKEN OR ANYTHING WHEN I CHANGED THEM. THE CAR IS AMAZING IF YOU MAINTAIN IT RIGHT. AND SO MANY AFTER MARKET PARTS EVERYWHERE CUZ IT SHARES PARTS WITH SO MANY BMW CARS AND EVEN A FEW LAND ROVER PARTS.

    Honestly, all these tips are superficial. The serious problems with this car is the transmission, because they use "lifetime fluid". The other expensive problem is worn suspension components, such as bushings and linkages as some of they are very hard to replace.

    I did not know repainting a car is bad,why look for repainting??

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  2 года назад

      Depends. An original car with no accident history is always better, and will demand a higher price. Cars with accident history will be worth less. Some cars have no reported accident history (clean CarFax, for example) but that just means it wasn't reported through insurance. So you can look for tell-tale signs of paint work. The issue is, most repairs are not done properly or well. Better to seek out a 100% original car, if your budget allows.

    You forgot to mention the buckets in the rear side compartments, they rot out and the sub frames are pathetic and also rust pretty badly.
    Automatic gearboxes are GM units and chocolate is stronger. Only buy manual, V8 have issues with oil stem seals which is an engine out job, 3.0 petrol is pathetically powerless and you are far better off with the 3.0 diesel.
    Wow, considering I have had mine 6 months and can pull your issues apart what have you been doing while owning yours for 5 years, making bad content and misinforming your viewers!
