Im running 16/42 on a 2008 sm with yoshi exhaust and 3x3 mod and its perfect. Didnt really affect takeoff much but made a huge difference while cruising at 65. Its basically like adding a 6th gear. You do have to clearance the chain slider for the 16 front though.
I'm looking to buy a crf450rl sometime soon but I live in texas where there's not that many sharp turns. Figured this gearing would be nice for daily commuting and ill save the stock gearing and a different chain for when I wanna go offroading.
found this video again lol. honestly I went to a 15/38 now. awesome gearing! i can cruise 70mph and still do trails. I have some videos on my link showing the offroad portion. Honestly for your SM if you do some light offroading a 1538 would be perfect for your 400sm. I might go to a 15/42 though since this gearing is overkill for me on highway. and a little more torque for slower pace stuff would be perfect!
I want to go from the 15t up front to 16t, but it is so tight. I understand I will have to grind down the steel guard, but I haven’t done so as yet. I have to ride 30 miles to reach dirt, most on fast highways. I try to keep it around 60-65 max, but wish, for safety sake, I could cruise at 70 without the high rpm. I run stock drz400s gearing now (15/44). Off road is flat, so should be fine there with bigger gearing. How much trouble was it installing just the 16t front sprocket, if you recall? Someone should make a kit with sprocket, re-shaped guard, and aluminum slotted outer cover. Thanks. May also just get a 42 rear as it seems safer for the cases, if chain should break, would lose a little weight, and is just a better solution....but changing the front is much more convenient to change if you wish to go back or back and forth. how hard was that front install?? Thanks!!!
No, I never made that change. Still have new sprocket in the package. After a year of getting used to it, changing the bars, pegs, seat, I became used to not going faster than 65-70 where needed and found the bike handled it well (ear plugs helped!). In fact, after becoming more comfortable in the dirt and sand (still find it difficult to find and remain in the pocket) I have actually installed a 14 tooth instead to try to make third gear more usable in sand. It did 98 mph with the 15 tooth and I never, or rarely, go over 70, so I am trying to get used to it. It’s so flat here I can probably run anything. But you need to grind out that metal guard to clear the 16 and no, I haven’t actually done that myself. Good luck.
have you tried taking it off road? like basic offroad trails or forest service roads? does it still have enough low end power to get you moving pretty quickly or you really have to clutch control to start
RagedKLX I would really not recommend using this gear ratio off road. If you're trying do some trails on your supermoto just keep stock gearing or go down 1 tooth in the front.
I found the sm wheel setup to be quite heavy compared to the dirt wheels. I run 16-41 and highway rpms are fantastic at 70 mph and i can still off-road with clutch work. If the trails are rewl gnarly i swap out to a 13t in the front once i get to the trail. If the trail is close i just keep the 13-41 combo. 60 mph is about all i like to ride at with 13-41
@@DGETHIS01 im thinking about buying a 16 tooth, sounds nice just keeping the same rear, and being able to just bring a couple tools and your extra front sprocket to swap on the fly
I have another question brother. So I do want 16/38, how the hell do u find like a package that comes already with 16 38 sizes or do I need to buy them separately. And what chain did u buy for that set up 16.38
You know how there's little marks on both ends of your swing arm to make sure your wheel is in alignment? With the 16/38 setup you'll be on the very last two marks before you run out.
AmateurEnthusiast oh ok I understand now. One more thing. I might as well get a new chain, whatsdifference between oring and bearing ball bearing idk the difference
I have a DRZ400s I’m looking to heighten the gearing for more highway gears for longer trips without significant vibrations, do you find that this gear ratio has tamed the vibration significantly?
Have a 16/38 on my SM as well and not only it has lowered the vibrations/RPMs but also a higher top speed, definetly the best "highway" gearing for the DRZ, highly recommend. Sunstar sprockets make a 16T front sprocket for the DRZ
AmateurEnthusiast the 16 tooth I have is a sun star, but I haven't put it on looks like it's a really tight fit.. what 16 tooth sprocket are you using thanks
How the hell can you get just 94mph with such long gears? I run like 15-44 (if its not 44 its 43) and I get a little over 150 km/h as top speed, which is 94 mph, so basically the same as you. Im planning to change to a 38 because at 55 it starts screaming with a 44 on the rear, but after this video im confused. I mean I can clearly see that your gears are wayy longer than mines but shouldn't you have a higher top speed? BTW the reason I want to go from 44 to 38 is be able to cruise at least at 70 mph without killing the motor.
Thiird I have topped out at about 106mph with this gearing in the right conditions. It's kind of hard to tell in the video, but I am on an incline which capped me out at 94. Weather conditions also play a factor. Also I weighed about 195lbs in that clip so that's another factor.
Oh ok, if you got 106 on a straight road (not downhill I hope) its ok, thanks for the quick reply. Cant wait to get the 38. By leaving the front to 15 should I be able to cruise at 65?
Thiird Yea it will help it a bit but it's not going to turn it into a streetbike. You'll be running just a few 100 rpm less, but it should be noticeable.
@@xThirdOpsx I'm running 15/39 on my '17 SM model and yes "cruising" at 65-70 is easy. I ran about 93 mph top speed last week when I changed the gear. I'm about 207 lbs. . Ran out of room but felt like I could have gotten to 94-95. I think the 15/39 set up works well so I think you'll be happy with the 15/38 you mentioned.
The wheelies in the video are with the long gearing so yes you can still wheelie. I would say that at 80 mph it's about 800-1000 rpm less than stock gearing.
ichiro suzuki you can clutch up 1st and second but third is pretty hard. I don't run this set up all the time and I would only recommend it for commuting. For just messing around with wheelies the stock gearing is fine or drop a tooth in the front which is how I run mine most of the time.
I'm running a 15,39. .great for street use.. but not the greatest for tight trails....it's that dam missing 6th gear screwing things up.

OHH THIS LOOKS FUN
Sweet wheelies man! Could you please explain what you had to modify to get this setup to work?

You think a 15/41 would be a happy medium? I’m hoping Low end torque isn’t an issue with a pipe and 160 main
Pretty sure a 15/41 is stock gearing on a 400sm....
Nick Adkins i have an s model which is 15/44 stock. I didn’t realize the sm model came with 15/41 though so it shouldn’t be a problem.
