    A couple of notes after just installing the kit.
    1- That front frame pin is a real pain to get out and once done things move along well
    2- When assembling the sear assembly you skipped over the second sear pin and spring. I rewound vid and noticed it's placement
    3- The trigger will not pull to rear until the whole install is completed and the slide put back on, and then racked. The trigger safety will catch on frame until then.
    4- As both sear pins are the same, be sure to install trigger bar on lower pins, not upper pins (had to double check that too)
    5- Re-installing front pin is just as much of a pain to get it out. I had to use a vise to press in place and finish with stubby
    6- Pat yourself on back once done and enjoy the superb parts and your installation
    Mark

      All Great points. Definitely #2 threw me for a slight loop. All in all it took me about 2 hours, with reassembly taking longer to make sure all the intricate parts were correctly in place. Watching the vid at .5x speed was also very necessary

    Installed in a 509 MidSize MRD recently. Purchased the pin removal jig as well, which actually came in handy when driving the pin back in. Total time from first hammer smack to last was about 2hrs - took some breaks in between but about 2hrs of labor, probably half of which was spent entirely in re-installing that pin haha
    Ran a few magazines through after the install and no issues, definitely a nice upgrade though the factory trigger isn't too bad so if you're concerned about damaging your gun beyond repair, because that's the risk you're taking here, consider installing an Apex trigger in something else.
    Removing that pin is tough, as you should be well-aware if you have gotten this far. Once it started moving during the removal, the pin came right out. No real issues with assembly other than my big fingers and tiny parts. Watching the video on .5x is helpful, otherwise be prepared to scrub back to re-watch some parts.
    Re-installing the pin, for me, was significantly tougher. I almost gave up and started looking for a Gunsmith or someone with a press, but I decided to put the pin removal jig back on so I could get more, heavier hits on the punch without it slipping off the pin and/or damaging the frame. I was doing this on a concrete floor, sometimes on an armorers block and sometimes right on the concrete. But using the jig during the reinstall certainly helped, though you have to keep putting it on and taking it off to check the progress of the pin. Literally the last 1/8 and 1/16" seemed to take forever and I wasn't sure the pin was even moving until I started taking pictures to measure the progress. That's how little the pin was moving while smacking the punch with a 24oz framing hammer...a press would make this install take no time.

      I am convinced after reading your post to leave the trigger alone. Going with the $20 MCARBO kit and polishing some of the trigger components. I've heard this pin is a bitch from hell.

  • @Drewg351

    Just did the Apex Red Flat Trigger on my new FN 509 LS Edge. I was NOT happy with the stock trigger. For a $1200.00 polymer gun, the factory trigger should've been much, much better. The Apex was well worth the money. It makes a huge difference instantly. Much smoother, plus it looks great too.
    Getting the pins out wasn't as difficult as getting them back in. I wish the pins didn't lose the "black" color from hammering and turned "silver". I gotta drop a dab of black paint on um as the shiny silver from hammering um stands out and drives me crazy.

    The disassembly block was a great tool when installing this trigger, took about an hour and 30 for me to install. I can say it was worth it in the end, i love the look and feel of this trigger. Would highly recommend getting the disassembly block before getting this trigger, makes a night and day difference getting that pin out.

    Alright... followed the video sts and it went almost flawlessly. I say 'almost' because the first time I had the spring under the slide release and the trigger would not work... obviously. Another viewing that portion of the video again and I saw my mistake. I have the disassembly block which made the removal of the front pin easy. I will say make certain your pin punch is long enough to drive the pin completely out of the frame. Mine was a tad short so I had to pull the pin out the final bit but no worries it came right out. Total time about 1 hour allowing for second partial disassembly to correct the spring placement. Just a note... I paid my local gunshop to install my first Apex trigger on my first 509 midsize because I had read horror stories about frames cracking while removing the front pin. Really no need to, if you have a moderate mechanical aptitude this is not a difficult job to do with the proper tools available. As a bonus I have a better understanding of how my pistol functions now.

    Just installed in my new 509 Tactical. No real problems, although that pin was as tight as advertised. I did purchase the fixture as well, so I wasn't too concerned.

  •  3 года назад +2

    I was doing great all the way up to the point where I had to reinsert that damn pin. Yeah, you know which pin I'm talking about. That effing pin! I'm going back and forth between my computer (at least fifteen times) and the garage where I was doing the work, feeding the dogs, and with the wife talking at me and got mixed up on the direction that I was supposed to drive the pin in from. I started the pin from the wrong direction for my 509 and got it halfway when I encountered so much resistance I stopped. I was afraid I'd bend the pin, crack the frame, or miss and hit the frame. That was after the pin started to mushroom on me. I managed to pound it back out after nearly going insane and drove it in the right way. Even after that, it wasn't as easy as it looked in the video. I thought of digging out my old arbor press and using that, but then I thought if anything bends that pin it'll be that press. That last 1/8" was a bitch. My punch kept slipping because the pin surface got slightly mushroomed and I've got the dings and gouges in my frame to prove it. I went over the by now shiny pin ends with a magic marker so they'd blend with the frame. Here's the kicker, I did the research, the prep and laughed at the guys that turned this simple process into a horror novel and thought to myself why do they even attempt something like this if they don't have the skills. See, I'm very mechanically inclined. The only problem, I learned later was that I'm not a gunsmith. I have and used the proper tools in the way they were meant to be used. I even bought that damn jig (and it did help), but I was really disheartened by this experience. I'm not trying to discourage anyone who wants to do this themselves, I'm just saying think long and hard before you make the leap. The trigger is lighter, with a shorter pull and reset, and even though the takeup is shorter you can still feel the grittiness. All in all, I don't regret it and the trigger is great, but it was such an ordeal it took some of the "new toy" excitement out of it. Good luck to all you brave souls.

    • @matt-ts8cx
      @matt-ts8cx 6 месяцев назад

      I know this is 3 years old but hopefully you already figured out the grittiness was most likely your striker and spring

    •  6 месяцев назад

      I can't believe I wrote that. I sound like a real spaz. I think I put less than 100 rounds through it and just got used to the grittiness. I've had so many pistols since then I never really shot it again. I did like it quite a bit though. Would you suggest changing out the striker and spring? And if so, with what? Thanks for the insight.@@matt-ts8cx

    • @matt-ts8cx
      @matt-ts8cx 6 месяцев назад

      Mcarbo makes a titanium striker that I would use but the cheapest option is to dremel and polish the inside of your factory striker where the striker spring goes. The grittiness is the striker spring coils gliding over the imperfect surface of the inside of the striker as the spring compresses.

      @toejam7606 4 года назад +1

      BOHICA I think that was the trigger pin, it’s reversed so the pin can catch the takedown spring hole. Going left to right the pin has a flat head and hard to align with the spring, other way the pin is rounded and feeds better

      @Skyline 305 I got rid of the grittiness before installing. I buffed out the striker, and slide with a dremel, and que tips. The trigger just reduced the travel of the pull, shortened the take up a little, and provided a crisper break. The break is a lot more predictable. I am shooting tighter groups with it.

    • @apextactical
      @apextactical  5 лет назад

      @Skyline 305 It significantly improves the trigger and removes much of what you experience as grittiness. Like with all new guns with few to no rounds through them, the smoothness of the trigger will be more noticeable after several rounds are shot and the gun is "broken in."

    Just got my locking block pin out with no cracking thank God lol.
    Used a punch slightly smaller in diameter and a bench block with a blue paper towel over it folded in 2 under the parts with gaps to have some thing the frame would rest tight on and I easily knocked the pin around in a circle with a punch that is tapered and probably 4 mm long till it came loose some then I used a longer punch doing light hits till it came out and was so relieved once it was halfway out with no problem.

      If I tried this install I'd just end up sending a box of parts to someone in the mail to fix lol

      Fortunately we are offering an FN Installation Assistance service for those not wanting to tackle the install.

      Works fine here. Maybe it's a connection/buffering issue on your end.

    Also my gunsmith told me that that awful pin was designed to be hydrologically pressed out. Makes sense but also very stupid . Ps I’ll never take it all the way down again. Don’t buy one used.

      If you have the disassembly fixture, put the fixture back over it as if you were removing the pin and drive the pin back in from the bottom

      Not once you do it once or twice. There are something like 10 people here that can do this install, and for at least one it would take no more than 15 minutes. But, we have more experience with this than anyone else in the industry.

    Take it to a competent gunsmith.

      One that has some experience with the FN line. More than one "gunsmith" has screwed this up, mostly due to not following our video or calling us for guidance.
