Bio from: www.allmusic.com/artist/danny...
Detroit rapper Danny Brown embraced his unique hood/hipster personality, took full advantage of social media, and -- fueled by his experiences with fun dealing and fun taking, as well as a wicked sense of humor -- delivered some of the most vivid, vulgar, and side-splitting rhymes of his era. Brown (real last name: Sewell) surfaced during the mid-2000s as a member of Reser'vor Dogs. The group advanced far enough to get the attention of the Roc-A-Fella label. A deal was not struck, but an A&R rep assisted Brown with the recording and release of a mixtape, Detroit State of Mind. New York recording sessions placed him in the company of several contemporaries, including G-Unit's Tony Yayo. In 2010, Yayo and Brown released Hawaiian Snow, while Brown also released The Hybrid, among other mixtapes, such as additional volumes of the Detroit State of Mind series. While it was rumored that Brown would be signing to G-Unit, label head 50 Cent allegedly balked due to the rapper's fashion sense (which included a preference for skinny jeans).
XXX
Brown eventually found a home at Fool's Gold, where he issued XXX, his highest-profile mixtape up to that point. At the end of 2012, Brown announced that the follow-up to XXX had been recorded. Originally titled ODB, it was continually pushed back by the label, with Brown tweeting in August 2013 that he would consider leaking the release. In October, the retitled album, Old, appeared with guest appearances from A$AP Rocky and ScHoolboy Q. After he provided the theme for the U.S. television sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, Brown signed with Warp and made his label debut in 2016 with "When It Rain." The single's parent album, Atrocity Exhibition, was issued later in the year, with guest contributions from B-Real, Black Milk, and Kendrick Lamar.
Is Danny Brown a good rapper?

You should post snippets of videos you're making, like those smooth animations you have. Would pimp up your insta heavy. Could even use them like teasers.
Do a video for Joey Bada$$, Capital STEEZ, Little Simz, Noname, J.I.D, The Weeknd, Isaiah Rashad, BROCKHAMPTON, J. Cole, Bones, etc.
Do a video on UK Rap/Grime because a very prominent grime artist Skepta is going to
post his album “Ignorance is Bliss”
I wish I had a record player
Volksgeist Hi, is it possible to do a video on maybe billy woods, ELUCID, Aesop Rock, or maybe maybe on the Orpheus and The Sirens albums. Thanks for the amazing vids. Not a lot of quality Hip-Hop essay vids😌
We don't care if you're white. No matter who you are, if you love rap, you love rap
You can always tell when a white guy just loves rap and when a white guy fully understands rap and the culture that surrounds it. That's why voltergiest is so amazing
Idk I’ve been called out several times for being white and having no say in anything because of me being white
And don't be a vulture. Just respect it's roots
He has to say it or else people will revolt and flag.
It's a sad and ridiculous time. People like to find anything to argue about, they'll scew words to make their "point" heard
@@MadMax0417 Well, we call those type of people racists, or assholes.
Danny Brown has one of the best experimental albums of all time, and he is still considered underground and underrated
Id argue he has 2. We cant forget XXX
That experimental album, which happens to be legendary, only sold 7k first week.. 7k.. that’s hard to believe.
Zach Peterkoski have you listened to the album? Sales don’t mean everything
Charlie Fadel sales don’t equal quality music but they can show how overrated or underrated an artist is. But yes, I have listened to the album, in fact, I just called it legendary in my last comment. It’s so legendary that it’s hard to believe it only sold 7k first week, making it underrated. That’s all I was saying.
as a fan of hip hop I’d love to be a danny brown fan but I can’t find one song of his worth listening. He’s one of the most overrated artists of all time, and seems like an off brand andre3000
Danny Brown could rap over an audiobook.
Danny Brown SHOULD rap over an audiobook. 😉
“As some of you may know, I’m a white guy”
I don’t know why this made me laugh 😂
Danny Brown is the most slept on dude in Hip Hop nowadays
Shiieet of all time id say
Big KRIT imo at least there is a reason why danny brown is slept on (his voice) but i dont see any reasons of why krit is underrated his production is cool his flow, deleviry, discography are all fantastic and he also knows how to make a banger but he's still underrated smh
Him and Big L before his death
Honestly one of the best music youtubers PERIOD.
Also the most unruly
They should both collab
Nice Melon video just tell him to let you out of his basement
If Plan A fails, offer to buy Cal a sandwich and he'll let you out. Cal's a cool guy
something something ridge wallet
When will we get an Understanding of Joey Bada$$?
This
His music is good but nothing really super special that needs explanation so people can understand
Knxcke Beatz exactly. He HAD the potential early on, but I feel like he became comfortable. All his new verses & songs don’t have that hunger in them like they used to have. I also heard that he’s free styling his songs/ verses more often... which means that he’s not even bothering writing down his lyrics anymore. SUPER whack
Yesss!!!
@@theR0ck3tsumm3r I feel like his hunger and drive for rap just died down more when Capital Steez died. He's just doing it for the money now, rather than passion and fun. If he was doing it for fun and because he actually liked it, then his last album wouldn't have been full of democratic 'fuck trump' political views, and more. Not saying he's not entitled to those, but it just felt more real back in the 1999 and Summer Knights days.
His upcoming album is my most anticipated album of the year. Atrocity is my absolute fav hip hop album. I connect w it in a way that I have never connected with a hip hop album. El-P said its one of the best things he’s ever heard, and that was before mastering.
Danny Brown destroys the typical boundaries of rap. The instrumentals, the drums, sheeeesh...
I love that its a nod to the joy division song of the same name!!!
Underrated channel, surprised that your do not have at least 1 mill. Hope u blow up i love your content. Keep up the good work.
Is Danny Brown a good rapper? He's Top 3 of the greats
All love to danny, but thats a reach.
Harijs Žeregeļa top 3 of the 2010s at least as an artist of Hip Hop of course. Not as a lyricist (even though he’s pretty good)
Weyes Noir freddie and Krit too
Sry couldn't watch this vid was too busy using skillshare
The Downward Spiral came out in 1994 not 2004, but other than that little nitpick, great video!
I LOVE YOUUUUU JESSSUUUSSSS CHRISTTTTTTTTT
I knew something was wierd about it lol
2004 is almost the With Teeth era... your nitpick is valid and I thank you for the comment. 👍
I respect this mans work so much no matter your color you work hard and u should be proud of ur work
Very genuine in the intro dude, I appreciate that you are not trying to be someone who you are not. That definitely goes a long way
I grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio. Listening to Danny Brown feels like listening to one of the old heads or crackheads from around the way tell me about how to not fall in the trap and how to not end up like them.
On a 2013 interview for Complex, about his 25 favorite albums, Danny cites Aesop Rock's Bazooka Tooth, a very interesting pick.
"I used to write his lyrics out and read them back to myself. I'd write them out as I listened, just to understand what he was saying."
I appreciate the level of work that goes into your videos, and the up front transparency in this one. Usually when I see you've got a new video out, I click regardless of if I'm familiar with the artist or not
Thanks for all you do, Volksgeist!
I'm so happy you made this one, Atrocity Exhibition is one of my favorite albums ever. I love your content so keep it up!
Great video on one of the best modern rappers out right now. Danny brown is the epitome of artistry that truly reflects life, in all it's glory and horror, which makes you stop and think before you engage in some of the things his done.
Don't worry about your race bro. Hip hop is for everyone. As long as there's a mutual love and respect for it, then it's all good.
I sorta get upset at the lack of followers bc the quality of your videos since you started have been top tier and I know this is just the beginning. Good luck and I love this channel!
Fantastic analysis, of one of the greatest rappers today. So hyped for his next album!
I really enjoyed this video! It's always nice hearing about someone I'm sorta close to and whose music I thoroughly enjoy. Hoping he has a concert soon after he drops his album. ♡
Your videos are so addicting, keep it up
Beautiful work
Yoooo. I'm so happy this was the video u put up
Great video keep it up🙏🏽
Can’t wait for the new album
Thats a raw and honest intro
Took me awhile to get into Danny, but once I really listened I was blown away
Melon should have gave this album a 10/10
Scores don’t mean shit
still don’t understand how Kids See Ghosts is a 10 and not this???
@@kkarbonsdigitalbasement1471 both great albums KSG has better production AE has better storytelling and rapping

Great work man genuine
Atrocity Exhibition is my favourite album ever. So thanks for this video.
3:55 You said the downward spiral came out in 2004, thats wrong downward spiral was released in 1994, im guessing you read your scipt wrong
Danny Brown, one of the greats.
Loved this 🔥
The man who calls himself volkgeist has returned to bless our ears
i still need to listen to his album
danny entertains the fuck out of mee as well as learning me lessons
Just came from Fantono and see a Danny Brown video. I think I'm going to like this channel.

This is my new favorite video from you
I’ve love atrocity exhibition since it dropped and I probably play through the whole album once or twice a month
I been having a Danny brown binge recently and now this vid pops up
Thats how the algorithm works
Bruhhhh the coops beat in the back is such a vibe
did he just say gun waving new haven i'm screaming rn
thankfully they dont call it that anymore lmfaooo
imho Danny Brown is very special.
He should be treasured.
He is such a creative force,up there with Tyler and Kanye,he's music taste(samples, cadence, rythm, productions)is so unique,so dark and sinister.
He is giving us insight on what it means to be a successfull young african american,in the lines we barely have ever heard.
This man....is something special, and im almost heart broken thinking that he's carreer and life will not last, you just pay attention to Atrocity Exhibition and you can FEEL that this man is on the edge.
I love what he does and I really wish him the best, because the potential is there, and there is so much he can accomplish if nothing goes wrong.
If you ever see him, send this man warm love, because it would be a fucking tragedy if this guy ends up dead young, the sky is the limit with Danny.
Fav rapper for bout 5 years now, my kids will know Danny brown an I see him bein my fav forever, uncle Danny is the shit
God I love this channel
Dude, your wirk is outstanding! I don't know why you don't have more subs and views?! You'll get there!!! I'm sure!
That being said, what makes you really GREAT is that you're genuine because you're reasonable and apply common sense. It sounds basic but the reality is, that most people sadly lack of those two attributes! Keep 'em coming and stay the way you are! Your work is much appreciated!
thank you brother✌🏼
Great video
thanks!
how could I not know this vidos?? amazing love danny brown! ae my fav experimental album. even above peggey, earl, clipping and death grips
Love u Volks thanks for the great video ❤️

Ayy found ur shit recently and its great. Keep up the good work!
love watching these, I love hip hop, and it's nice to have somewhat of a platform where people talk about it and analyze it, thank you. I love this album too, one of the best of 2016 definitely. 🙏🏻
Danny’s next album is executive produced by Q-tip so you know it will be insane also amazing vid bruh!

its incredible how he outdid himslef
Very good 👍 nice job keep it up
Music just sounds so much better when you talk about it out loud.
Danny brown has to be one of my favorite rappers. People seem to be off put by his voice but I fucking love it tbh.
this video underrated
finally a danny brown video
What should I talk about next?? Let me know here 💥⬇️
Logic
Do Freddie Gibbs
could you do one on a spanish artist such as rosalia or joaquin sabina?
MIKE
Volksgeist some MF DOOM
Respect.
Danny Brown is a legend
Much love to the whole earth from philly
Man you actually the GOAT
I respect your integrity.
if anyone's wondering what the beat that starts at around 3:30 is, it's that jazz by coops, produced by thanos
Great video! I would have mentioned that Atrocity Exhibition is named after the intro track off the album Closer by Joy Division. They are also a musical act that is also almost unpleasant to listen to due to their dark lyrics and sound. RIP Ian Curtis
2:58 The Downward Spiral came out in 1994 not 2004
I finally just listened to the album, and goddamn did I miss out years ago. It's too good. Having been on coke for a few years and in a horrible relationship, it's a horrifically real album
love the video, love the album, love danny.
If you're very bored or interested, there is an album of a german rapper called 'tua', the albums name is 'grau'.
ot's also about the hangover and depression after heavy drug use.
mabye you give it a try, great production, by himself, and great lyrics, if you have the time to translate them.
His album is called thirty (XXX)
"I'm not a son of a banker"
You're right, your a son of our lord and savior Jesus Christ. 👨🏫
@@introvertedmindset3027 thanks for the soliloquy, this was totally not a joke. Iq 140
Hey man. Appreciate you turning me on to this amazing artist.
Justin Pipes if atrocity exhibition is your first Danny brown album, make sure you also listen to XXX. Personally I enjoy XXX more even though AE is an insanely creative project. Both are great in their own ways tho so make sure you’re not sleep
@@joeytmandude I'll most definitely check it out as well. I appreciate you.
Dawg you have great videos, we don't judge a man based on the color of his skin.
The Downward Spiral was released in 1994, but besides that, fucking amazing video.
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH. !!!!!!!! thank you, Volksgeist🙂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘✊😤😶😥😀😲😲😲😲😲😲
ur welcome ❤️
Danny brown is my favorite musician right now, I dont think anyone comes close to the poetic accuracy he has when describing drug life
Danny is the GOAT imo
Maffucas wanna talk about volk little they know he walking in this area HeAvY🤣😤
🤪🤣
Pointing out what makes you genuine is a double edged sword. Let your content speak for its self and you’ll find you don’t need to justify your self. Good on you for trying to make sure people understand what your doing though.
"The Downward Spiral" came out 10 years before you said it came out. For the record.
Great video essay on my favorite artist! Looking back at Atrocity Exhibtion it really makes me think about whats next for Danny, he has delivered exceptionally with telling us the story of his life, but what now? I don't expect another album about parties and hangovers and drug addiction and mental illness. This quote from a recent interview had me really excited though "he is presenting a new version of himself: Danny Brown, serious craftsman and burgeoning elder statesman of rap.". He is obviously in a different mindset about this next one, which has me both scared and excited, I think he is going back to writing "rap songs" like we'd hear from a lot of the tracks on XXX and The Hybrid.
Q-Tip produced his upcoming album.
@@remonhidding Executive produced, there will be featured production from other producers like JPEGMAFIA, Flying Lotus and Paul White
Hey your from new haven I’m from Madison love your vids
FINALLY MY WISH
CT brothas for life. Gotta rep the 860

Atrocity Exhibition is fantastic!!!
He takes the title from a joy division song, annnnd...downward spiral was released in 1994...:)
Hell yeah
Been watchin videos not even knowing he live 10 minutes away im dead.
Anyone else get the same vibes from Atrocity's album cover and Francis Bacon's Portrait of Pope Innocent X painting?
Danny has been gone too long
S_Dada hes releasing an album this year, QTip is exec prod I believe.
@@cyclone927 yep!
His album is like a Downward Spiral rap album. I'd say it's even better storytelling wise.
DANNY BROWN IS SO GENIUS IT'S SCARY
I go to gun waiven new haven all the time
