    Whoever came up with the math of power play ranks, grind and decay should be forced to play it to earn their salary.

    50 million credits a week is a joke; sabotaging a power is easier than aiding it, the bubble hasn't moved in years, losing HALF your merits every week is the single most draconian example of progress decay I have EVER seen, and most of the powers are indistinct and pointless to begin with. (Mining lances? Seriously?)
    I can't wait for the entire playerbase to just band together, support Archon Delaine or something and completely eradicate the rest of the powers from the game via a combined effort of warfare and hauling. then we all look at Fdev with disapproving glares that tell them, in no uncertain terms, that powerplay was horribly implemented and should NEVER be done like that again.

    So people fully understand, I was unable to play this week due to family issues stuff that could happen to anybody, so because I was unable to grind merits on a non combat grind and they now got cut in half ,I essentially lost millions. That's how fun Powerplay is.

      While every PP participant loathes the rank regression caused by gaps in play time (PP punishes you for NOT PLAYING) to be honest, PP did not take away millions from you, but you did lose the additional income PP provided. What you had up to that point, you kept. For the serious long term PP pilot, the "loss" of millions in income is like losing a few pennies. I know PP pilots who are multi billionaires. 100 mil a week is chump change to them.

    As long as Sandro Samarco is the lead designer,almost every aspect of the game will be a huge job-like grind that is supposed to be "immersive" cause he hears all the no-lifers,wannabe immersionists on forums...

    • @daelra
      @daelra 7 лет назад +28

      The trouble is, there's two type of player here. The 'knucklehead' guys that just want to shoot stuff for an hour and the 'no-life' guys that want to play it like a sim. The knuckleheads fly off into a tantrum if they don't get the biggest badass ships like yesterday whilst the no-lifers think that you should work your ass off to get the good stuff.
      It's pitifully easy to get an Anaconda if you go down the exploit route. Now hundreds, maybe thousands of people now have massive ships. This has made the game top heavy. The biggest ships ought to take blood sweat and tears to get, otherwise people will be ditching the games after weeks instead of years because people will plateau at the max too quickly.
      Same thing happened with the engineers. They were supposed to make ships 'unique'. I'm sure the idea was that the level five stuff would be really hard to get so only the dedicated would get them but the entitled whingers complained it was too difficult so FDev nerfed the difficulty and now everyone has practically exactly the same mods.
      There's nothing wrong with hard to get. People should just expect less or deal with the difficulty/grind. Sure, there ought to be less tedious ways to grind but at the same time people shouldn't be expecting stuff handed to them on a plate.
      Maybe, the quick fix shooters ought to sign up for the Navy or some mercenary group and get supplied with a good ship. So whilst they're in the navy, they can't be a pirate or shoot people randomly or whatever but they get supplied with a great ship to shoot things with whilst on their 'tour'. When they're mustered out, they have to go back to their old ship and earn their gear like the rest of us but be free to do what they like. Likewise, want to trade in a big ships for a while and earn so big cash? Join a trading company, expect a few restrictions for your routes but get a big transport ship to play with whilst you're employed. Want to be more independent? Do the grind and earn it the old fashioned way. Want to bounty hunt? Join the police, etc.
      Maybe, just maybe, that's what Powerplay should have all been about, joining a faction to get lent a badass ship in the expectation you follow their strict rules for a bit (and suffer some massive penalties if you don't). This'll immediately give the knuckleheads something big to pew pew with but leave the no-lifers to immerse themselves in the daily chores of everyday space life and not break their immersion. It should also keep the two play styles relatively separate so FDev might not have to always compromise between the two camps so much.

      You are describing two extreme states...the knucklehead and the no-lifer.Fuck them both!!! I am talking about making Elite a fun game without stupid timesinks that prevent many people from playing since if you have lets say an hour free time to play then you wont accomplish anything cause everything is stupidly time consuming and thats supposed to immerse you.And i dont mean dumbing down the game.TIME-SINK DIFFICULT...and fuck everyone that voted for ships and modules to require time to be transferred,otherwise it would break the "immersion"...Yeah sure,everytime i wait 30min-1hour for the modules/ship to arrive i am so getrting immersed on youtube or i end up loggin off cause i have no time left to play the "game".Or when i decide to go bounty hunting/pirating with a friend and my ship needs 1 hour to arrive to the station,oh let me tell you its so immersing that we both log off and go play something else for the time we have left...FUCK everyone who thinks that working your ass off=mindlessly grinding for countless hours...

      Isn't it funny how some confuse difficulty with boredom and pointless time-sinking, though. Besting a better opponent in a fight or flying through a tight space is difficult. Spending (waiting for) ages to get a material for RNGeneers is bullshit. The whole system of "crafting" upgrades being a simple slot-machine is bullshit. Flying to an outpost around another star in the same system for 1h 20m in supercruise is bullshit. So to add to your original post: Fuck Sandro and fuck those morons who gave FD the idea of supercruise. Actually no, just fuck Sandro. If he wasn't such a weak-willed lame piece of shit piss-poor excuse for a game designer, ED would be a waaaaaay better game without idiotic and pointless timesinks.
      Just google what else he designed. What compelled Braben to employ that sorry excuse on what is basically a game series that made history and was more influential than most other games ever is absolutely and totally unfathomable. Pehaps Sandro gives good head?

    Must have been fate... Today i started playing Elite dangerous again after a year of not doing anything much with it apart from going to resorce sights and bounty hunting to buy my first real ship. I brought myself a diamondback scout and i wanted to see if i made a good choice for a ship so i started looking at all of the youtube videos and i came across your review video and i gotta say I loved it subbed right away and watched some more. Great videos by the way keep it up! Anyway after swallowing the fact i brought a very Meh Ship i continued playing on. Ive always seen the power play but never really knew anything about it so today i thought "meh i might as well try it out". I had a look at some youtube videos for this stuff but didnt really find anything worth summing up how i should do it or if its worth my time doing it so i kinda gave up and went off to work feeling really meh about the power play experience. Anyways after coming home from work and smashing that youtube what video do i see smack bam on my youtube home page..? This little beauty! Thanks for the heads up buddy i sure wont bother wasting time with powerplay junk 10/10 would watch again ^_^

    Well, you're missing a few points, but yes, it's a shallow system. It takes about 4-5 hours of gametime to get 10,000 merits via ship-kills if you've got a good wing. 2-3 hours a week to maintain. It's not the highest level of money-making, but it's not that bad. There's also the community-aspect, a lot of groups that have formed around powerplay. The final component is the BGS-aspect, working to install favorable governments across space that's exploited by your power to reduce fortification costs/strengthen your power's ability to control it's territory. That BGS-Aspect is where I spend most of my time, and I'll chuck away my salary to fast-track some forts or preps to maintain my rating 5 because it's a huge help to the community that supports each power.

    thanks for this, knew rank decayed, but hadn't realised it was half every week
    as a casual gamer who spends a couple of hours each week, I don't mind a bit of a grind. I feel quite happy with having a goal in mind, i.e. leveling up my fed rank or working on a cg, and working on that.
    the information provided on this and what I have seen is that its not worth getting into if you only play an evening every week or two.

    • @AegixDrakan
      @AegixDrakan 7 лет назад

      That's really the problem with PP.
      I don't mind a grind too much either. I enjoy doing a lot of trading and eventually being able to aford a shiny new ship.
      But Powerplay is a treadmill you can't get off of and that sucks. Seriously, a grind that undoes your progress, forcing you to stay on it or you're screwed is just terrible design. It'd be like if you don't make enough credits during a week in your Cobra you suddenly wake up in a sidewinder again.

  • @iansharmacook

    As always a well balanced and objective review! ;-) The only part of Powerplay i have ever used is the discount that Rui chap provides on ships and equipment. It is a feature with no consequences for the player beyond penalties to those confused enough to join up if they don't do enough of the same thing, over and over again. FDev should just kill this add on and replace wth something that rewards varied gameplay and community interactions.

    The worst thing about powerplay is that the general idea is actually really good, but they messed it up so bad that nobody wants to play it. And instead of spending time to actually make something good out of it (which is definitely possible), FD decided to ignore it because people don't play it.

    I wanted to add something to maybe help with those who do enjoy power play. If you're not into the combat part and you want to transfer the items for merit there is an easier way. The limit of only being able to transport so much per half hour is not a limit of how much you can transport per half hour. It's only a limit of how many you can take into your cargo hold per half hour. which means if you're doing literally anything else in the station you can just come back to your power contact and pick up the items every half an hour and only leave when your cargo hold is full. Maybe you're watching RUclips or Netflix in the background who knows. But at least you don't have to go and come back every 30 minutes.

  • @WhiteWulfe
    @WhiteWulfe 4 года назад +1

    Yeah, I honestly don't get why some people seem to think this is the be-all end all of the game. It doesn't pay, it's a massive time sink, and let's not forget all those "lovely" additional random NPC interdictions you get happening once you sign up for pretty much any power.

  • @JeronCradle
    @JeronCradle 7 лет назад +1

    I like the idea of powerplay and would love to participate in it. But it's so weird and losing half your merits is a very strange game mechanic. Also the bonusses don't seem that interesting to me. i love exploration the most so i wanna join the exploration guy but his rewards are not interesting at all lol. Engineers now that's a good addition to the game. you can use various gameplay to rank up and it's not rediculously time consuming. Offcourse we have the internet to look up where and how to find mats and stuff, without it it would much harder.

    I've been with Torval since when she used to be 6th on the Power Play :P I'd say power play is somewhat cool, if you think that expanding, controlling, and raising the profit of systems within the power to then which said power could then get better commodities, engineers and ship/modules due to better controlled systems with higher profit.

  • @AllinWhenPlaying
    @AllinWhenPlaying 7 лет назад

    Spot on as usual Yamiks. You not included one fun fact about the "hauling" way of doing merits. You may be given cargo that NO ONE AT THE GIVEN TIME accepts at all as, let's say, faction could not expand but it still gave out expansion cargo. Thanks to that you can end up with a cargo hold of useless crap that you have to vent, because Powerplay interface does not prevent you from buying those things even if they are not usable in the cycle. I think that it makes it even more fun! Frontier and their designs...

    i'm new to this game and have only been playing about a month, but came up with a solution for powerplay - add merits to community goals. say for every 100 tons you haul or every number of bounties turned in during a community goal, you get 20 merits. i know this video was made a long time ago, and you probably won't even see my comment, but i think there is a way to add merits to community goals and thus make powerplay grind a little easier.

    Heh, I've been fast tracking commodities to get from rank 1 to 5 in order to get that triple price exploration data payout with LYR. I've estimated I have enough to cover the cost and then some. It's boring, but not as soul crushingly boring as trying to reach any rank without the fast tracking. With my big Type-9 hauls it feels like I'm actually having some impact on those systems. Carrying around all that exploration data also makes adds great deal of tension to being interdicted as well. Still, I think this will be only an one time experiment.
    Really, they should have simply tied the powerplay to the mission system. In systems controlled by the power, you would get power missions that give you merits instead of rep. Also there could be 2 levels of participation: employee and investor. Employee just does the missions and gets paid and gets some merits for it. Investor would invest his money on a specific system for merits. The system would then generate more missions the next cycle, and if enough of the missions would be successful the investment would turn some profit the cycle after that. And yes, it should be permissible to grind your own missions to make them succeed.
    I also agree with many others that the merit degradation is too harsh. Maybe it could degrade 50% if you did nothing, but if you earned even one merit in the cycle, the degradation would be 10% or something like that.

    On a different topic: Is E:D officially a finished product or are we in some kind of alpha / open beta / quality testing / pre-release version? Because the game feels full of "placeholder game mechanics" that would hopefully be replaced some day.

  • @AegixDrakan
    @AegixDrakan 7 лет назад

    Yeah, it's needed an overhaul for ages.
    I'm an alliance man, which means that I'm stuck with the hauling task, and honestly I hate having to pay in order to get any kind of decent merit gain, PLUS having to do it frequently every week in order to keep a rank that's high enough to get the trade vouchers bonus.
    If the merits didn't degrade or you didn't have to pay or something it wouldn't be so bad, I guess. But either way, it's not really fun to do for long periods of time, and the fact you LOSE money in order to keep the trade vouchers which are basically just going to win you back the money you spent....It's pretty worthless.
    Also, the fact that some Powers have amazing modules (Prismatic shields) and others, like Mahon, have stuff that's generally kind of crap doesn't help matters at all.
    I'd love for Powerplay to be fun and rewarding, but it's neither right now. :(

    You actually don't need to wait for power play ships to spawn with ALD; look for Crime Sweeps in systems marked for Expansion. It's basically a combat zone and these days I think you get 10 merits per kill.
    It's still very slow, but it's faster than hunting ships in supercruise.
    And regardless of how much of a grind it is, power play will always be shit as long as it can be played in Solo. If anyone ever did take it seriously, it would just become a contest to see who could grind against each other the most (which is way less fun than I just realized that sounds).

  • @DGneoseeker1

    So let me get this straight. It's MEANT to be a kind of galaxy spanning war between empires... but in reality I just pay money to pick up cargo, fly one star system over, and drop off the cargo, then repeat until I get prismatic shields (or whatever). Then quit the empire because obviously I have no loyalty or motivation.
    Then repeat with another faction.
    Amazing.

    Yes, power play is a mess.
    They make it too hard to maintain rank for sure. And the activities are... Well, I think the one where you kill the Diplomats can be fun, I've never had trouble finding them but it still gets grating after a few hours.
    I think what would really help, is Merit awards for Missions done in the power control system. Maybe with the caveat that only the Controlling Station Faction has merits added to the reward table, and only if that controlling station faction is aligned with the superpower of the controlling galactic power. Right now, you either divide your time up between Normal Content, and Powerplay content, and that's where the big catch is. That makes it even worse.

    Ahh yes. The joyful eagernes after waiting for 4 weeks, that slowly dies down while you hold a button so the count slowly goes up to ten, then clicking once to recieve the stuff you need. Followed by another click to dismiss the notification that you indeed got the stuff. Followed by another click, and spending 100k, just to get the next 10 tons of stuff, so you then can again hold the button for the counter slowly to increase to ten. And repeating that fascinating interesting gamplay until your cargohold, 320t, is full. Then looking for a system that really need the reinforcment because you are now in that faction that you really want to support. Only to find it's 12 Jumps away, but you go for it anyways because it's your faction. Then arraving at the target port hold a button, for what felt like 5 minutes, to unload your 320t of cargo and recieving a meager pay of 32k for you 3.1mio investment. Then flying back empty, because you can't be arsed to look online if there would be some valueble tradegood. And smacking into a star half of the way, because you tabbed out of game because the RUclips video you were watching ended and you needed to start a new one. Then deciding to frag that system, your 750 tons of material won't make a diffrence anyway and go for a system thats only 1 jump away. And then repeating that awful loading process one and a halft times, so you can on the next day buy a module that you might use, or maybe not.
    Powerplay a really great experience.

    Couldn't agree more, Powerplay does suck, constant grinding just to lose half of your merits, then there is the interdictions which mean doing anything else at all is impossible. I want to like it but at this time.....hell no.

  • @Manabender
    @Manabender 7 лет назад

    Two thoughts.
    1) It doesn't feel like "freemium" to me. The hauling bit is part of preparing systems, and the time limit is to ensure that a single player can't singlehandedly prepare a system unless they really, REALLY want to. It has less to do with limiting your merits and more to do with limiting your ability to exert absurd levels of control.
    2) Honestly, I don't think powerplay would be that bad if you could just do it on the side. As it stands, though, the constant interdictions at any system outside your power's is something of a deal-breaker. It's kind of in a state where, if you pledge to a power, you're expected to focus on powerplay to the exclusion of all else.

    • @TheYamiks

      about freemium : it's over exaggerated (when i scripted and recorded) i was quite angry and obviously wanted to make a point...now i'm less angry but still the free2play game features irritate me immensely
      power play would work better If we did not have that stupid weekly PROGRESS LOSS & 4 week cap on modules...seriously! (some kind of progression that would take player time to go thru would be interesting replacement for blatant time cap!)

    I cant speak for any other players but I stop at level 3, as thats where the benefits for myself seem to be, like a lot of things in this game if you stop and think and look at it from a different angle you will see the reason for the grind, things arent meant to be easy and handed to you on a plate in this game, the most skilled and/or committed get the good stuff this is why we all start off with a with an E grade Sidey, and not an A grade Anaconda, to me tier 5 is just like a golden carrot dangling in front of you, and its up to you if you really want to jump for it, your informed of what it costs so if you do go for it then its down to you... I myself just wanted the 'hammers' but I also see the reason for the grind, it means only the most commited get to tier 5, and it ensures there wont be too many of them playing dice with the galaxy lets face it as it stands by the time anyone gets there they should be pretty much proficient at it, and you wouldnt want too many players that may not understand the repercussions of rolling the galactic dice of fate would we? yes it costs a lot to get there and even more to stay there, but from my point of view if powerplay was too easy it could be a very bad thing.... the one thing you did touch on that does annoy me with this implementation of powerplay is the play style for the powers is very much the same, infact its exactly as you stated, to me it would be better if playstyle would be more inline with what each of the power stand for, for example, trade or mining for torval , and maybe more combat options for hudson, and lots of pirating, smuggling and looting for Archon, rather than doing the exact same sort of missions with what feels like a different label on them... anyway the nice vid as always btw & keep them coming...

    I mainly use Powerplay for orientation in this huge sandboxy galaxy.
    Pledged to Pranav Antal because underdogs ftw! And who likes Wining Team Joiners? The Trick with Powerplay is to include it in your daily gameplay.
    Look at the subreddits of your faction. If it's made by passionated players it tells you where to go and what to do to strengthen your faction. Doing so will at best result in the rise of your faction on the pp leaderboard.
    How? Example:
    The system Gallavs needed us to fortify by delivering over 10k t of Dissidents to our capital world every cycle. One hell of a grind which took our time and effort from other projects away. So how to manage this shit? By supporting every minor faction in and around Gallavs that supports our cause. Doing Missions for Dictator-Factions until their influence rises to oppose the faction which controls the system. This starts a civil war. Fighting - wining - flipping the systems government from filthy democrats to noble dictators. After doing so we managed to flip 50% of the surrounding systems including Gallavs itself. And this resulted in a reduction of the necessary fortification-grind from over 10000t to 5000t every cycle. Reducing our effort and making room for other actions every cycle.
    So what have we done to reach this point? Missions, fighting in Civil Wars, collecting Bounties and sell it to stations of our supported minor faction, collecting exploration data and sell it to stations of our supported minor faction, trading with stations of our....you name it. Almost everything you can do in this game.
    That is what Powerplay is about. I even don't care a lot about those modules you get.
    Just sayin'....

I came in foolishly thinking I'd have a boat load of money waiting for me, and instead had nothing. And of course I came to find that somehow the Alliance of all things somehow is dominating, when it used to be as far as I can remember the Federation. (I have max level Allied status with them still but only got to Petty Officer. I was at 48 percent or something yesterday but managed to get it up to a meager 52 percent after doing a few super easy low paying one or 2 jump cargo missions.)

    Power play is a mess. Which is a shame, some of my best moments in the game were with power play. Everything from organizing bgs attacks on pmfs, to weaponizing aligned pmfs and cultivating underhanded alliances. Power play has so much potential but it's been squandered. For that matter player minor factions as well seem like a squandered opportunity, people should be able to make more interactive groups akin to guilds and power play should've been a lore and CG generator like it was advertised in its trailer. I don't play much ED anymore and it's largely due to the treatment of how BGS bugs are left for months and how power play has been horse shit I've been waiting to turn into unicorn rainbow dust...

    Doesn't help that the current setup of powerplay goes against the 'blaze your trail' idealogy FDev has always talked about, with most people not getting to actually contribute much to the state of things. You either listen to the orders some players give you or get hated on for 'not supporting the power'. It really turns me off from participating. And yeah, recently started the merit grind, really hating it.

  • @raven800plays
    @raven800plays 7 лет назад +2

    you can hit rank 4 in no time delivering data from systems to your faction HQ or preparation packages to other systems from your faction HQ and you can do it rather easily too without sacrificing your experience or distracting you from other high paying missions! (or your personal life if you don't wish to dedicate so much time in-game!)
    here's a quick run down:
    Prep Packages give 1 merit per unit. You start off at Rank 1 with the ability to deliver a maximum of 10 Packages. These package deliveries refresh every half hour and the maximum number increases by 10 with each rank (i.e. rank 2 = 20mphh (Merits per half hour), rank 3 = 40mphh, etc.) So you should be able to deliver about 20mph at rank 1 every hour. If you dedicate 2 hours a day you'd be delivering 40mpd (merits per day) and if you did this for 7 days you'd be delivering about 280mpw (merits per week).
    So depending on how much time you dedicate to doing this will determine how quickly you'll get to Rank 4.
    Here's a few schedules that might work out for different people:
    *Plan 1: The Casual*
    Time Dedicated a day: 2 hours
    Total Hours per Week: 14 hours
    Time between each rank progression:
    Rank1>2: 1 week
    Rank2>3: 2 weeks
    Rank3>4: 3 weeks
    Total Time to hit and maintain Rank 4: 6 weeks
    *Plan 2: The Weekender*
    Time Dedicated Per Day: 2 hours on weekdays, 6 hours on weekends
    Total Hours per Week: 22 Hours
    Time Between each Rank:
    Rank1>2: 1 week
    Rank2>3: 1 week
    Rank3>4: 1 week
    Total time to hit and maintain Rank 4: 3 weeks.
    *Plan 3: The Part-Timer*
    Time Dedicated Per Day: 3 hours on weekdays, 8 hours on weekends
    Total Hours per Week: 31 Hours
    Time Between each Rank:
    Rank1>2: 1 week
    Rank2>4: 1 week
    Total time to hit and maintain Rank 4: 2 weeks.
    The best part about Plans 2 and 3 is that once you reach rank 4 you can revert back to plan 1 and still maintain rank 4 for as long as you want. Following any one of these plans will pocket you an extra 5 mil credits a week on top of any other jobs you take or bounties you collect on the side.
    The part that turns power play into a ball busting grind fest is achieving and maintaining Rank 5. If you wish to hit Rank 5 you'll have to do more than just delivering packets. You may have to earn merits through Killing Hostile agents or Combat in expansion systems. Depending on which system you Kill Hostile agents in can result in hostile ships or system security ships being sent against you. Its a high risk high reward deal as doing so would net you about 30 merits per target killed. to maintain Rank 5 through Killing Hostile agents alone is where it gets frustrating as you'd have to get about 25 kills a day, netting 175 kills a week to bring in 5250 merits a week. I've managed to do this myself and it IS possible, but it would require at minimum 4 hours a day just to accomplish this on combat alone. You could try combining the 2 for a higher merit yield but it would still be very difficult. it would turn into a second job essentially.
    Honestly though if you have a high enough combat rating, try finding systems in civil war or civil unrest and take on combat missions instead. Make nice with the locals and you can unlock higher paying combat missions that can net you about 50 mil credits in 2 hours if you have an effective enough combat ship. Doing This will allow you you can skip rank 5 entirely.

    How to powerplay:
    1) Decide if you prefer a good unlock or a good character
    2a) If good unlock, pledge to Li Yong Rui for Packhounds
    2b) If good character, pledge to Aisling and transport nud...err, propaganda
    3a) Play for 4 weeks, buy a dozen packhound launchers, then IMMEDIATELY leave powerplay and never look back
    3b) Play forever and enjoy getting your ass shot to shit by people with Packhounds so you can spread Asling's nud...I mean, propaganda far and wide
    And that's how to powerplay. No, really. Every other powerplay module sucks (yes, even prismatic shields and imperial hammers, no, idc what you say, they suck) and every other character besides Aisling has an obvious moral flaw that Ms. Perfect Blue-Haired Princess doesn't. If you're not supporting either Aisling, Li, or nobody, you're a horrible person and you should feel accordingly.

    Sinon, pour avoir rapidement les niveau 2.3.4, ce n'est pas bien compliqué : il suffit d'avoir de la soute et de faire des missions que proposent ceux à qui vous faites allégeance. Pas de combat, juste du transport de tracts, de prisonniers politiques ou du ravitaillement d'un point A à un point B. Avec mon Cuter qui a 780T de soute, c'est très rapide !!!
