  • This video I recorded at the remains of the so-called Wolfsschanze - or Wolf's Lair - which was Hitler's HQ for the Eastern Front. Back then located in Germany's easternmost province East Prussia near the city of Rastenburg (now Kętrzyn located in northeastern Poland). On this very spot the history COULD have changed tremendously and perhaps millions of lives could been saved. Here the July Plot unfolded: an assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler by Claus von Stauffenberg. It had to be followed up by Operation Valkyrie (German: Unternehmen Walküre). Something went wrong...

what has always baffled me, is the story that they had two explosive packages but (in the end) only one trigger and therefore disposed of the second bomb. Wouldn't keeping the second package of high explosives together make a much stronger explosion?

@@HistoryHustle he tried to kill Hitler in 1939. He started to prepare for that before the war broke out. He knew that Hitler made a speech in the „Bürgerbräukeller" every year so he placed a bomb there( the preparation for that took him 1 month because he had to carve a hole into a stone wall)
Hitler survived because he left 13 minutes before the explosion. He had to leave earlier because he took a train instead of a plane due to bad weather conditions.
The interesting thing is that the nazis didn't believe that he did that alone. They used his attempt for their propaganda and claimed that he worked for the British intelligence service.
Other people thought that he worked for the nazis and everything was made up.
The nazis executed him in 1945 before the end of the war in the concentration camp dachau.
His assassination attempt didn't get a lot of attention in the post war era until 3-4 decades ago. A film about that was published 5 years ago

@@HistoryHustle I don't think that it would changed that much. Most dead soldiers were on the eastern front which would have seen no change. I further don't think that the western front would have seen that much difference because the wester allies have signed the treaty of Jalta. Maybe the Ersatzheer could have stopped the killing of Jews but this is about the only thing I could think of. Maybe the western powers could have reached Berlin or even Warsaw. But then the Soviets may have feel cheated and would have walzed through to Paris. Althistory has so many possibilities.
