The battle in Dorian’s library with Moriarty’s men shows the potential of this film. If it were mostly like that it’d be damn good. As it stands I do enjoy revisiting this from time to time. It’s a campy adventure.
Me too, it also sets the tone of who they are by their different fighting styles. Captain Nemo with his swords and hand-to-hand combat, along with Quartermain, even Swayer, and Dorrian. How Mina wrecked the guy who attacked her, and the Griffin using a book to fight. How they approach the situation, shows the viewer who they are. I wish there were more of that. I do wish that this was after Hyde's recruitment. Having every member of the League (including Hyde) do battle against Moritarty's men would've been a joy to watch. I like to imagine that Jekyll would've been chased off into another room of Gray's house, drinking the elixir and hiding behind some furniture while the men who followed fire their guns at him. At first you'd think they have succesfully killed Jekyll, only to be surprised by Hyde.

The stories from Flemyng and Curran about Connery are insightful, saying that he was generous with the crew and paid for dinner for everyone each time. It's a shame he called it quits after this. Only time he's come close to making another film was his interest in playing Albert Finney's part in Skyfall.
He was also courted for Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. He turned it down, due to his enjoyment of retirement. If you ask me, he chose a good time to leave acting. I recall seeing him plugging this movie on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. At times, he seemed to be forgetting where he was.

I think that's one of the big problems which plague the concept of the League: no one reads the classics anymore so name dropping these characters is wasted. Half the genius of reading the source material for instance is trying to figure out who some of these characters are when they're backgrounds are told but not their full names. Not enough of the target audience 'get's it'.

The League are much less interesting here. In the comics they’re like washed up celebrities. As you say, they’re “broken”, which is def the case. Here their pasts are barely touched on, and the characters are like 10% of what they were in the source material. Stuff like that isn’t impossible to do in a movie like this. Another interesting aspect that wasn’t carried over was the continuity with the source material. The characters feel like they were straight from the pages of the classic the novels they came from. You could read those books, and then feel like you’re seeing a continuation of those characters and their stories. Unfortunately the film takes some serious creative liberties with it’s characters, so it comes off more as fan fiction. The changes don’t really do anything for the characters either. The Del Toro Hellboy films take a lot of liberties with the characters and story. I was a kid when this came out and my dad and I LOVED it. I still love it, the concept is so wonderful. I see the flaws in it now as an adult but it influenced my creativity so much. I will DEFINITELY have to check out the comics!
Dang, I’d always heard that this was one of the worst movies of all time and I completely avoided the film because of that. I have a new found fascination of this film because of this retrospective and will be watching it soon.
It's not even close to being one of the worst films of all time. It's a flawed movie that suffers from not knowing what it wants to be a lot of the time. Totally watchable & enjoyable for what it is, tho.
Also, I think Jason Fleming is good in this film. He was good in the George A. Romero film Bruiser as well. That's a weird movie that's not for everyone. Another very flawed film as well...which is why you don't hear many folks talk about it. Even among Romero's biggest fans, Bruiser is a bit of an "afterthought" a lot of the time....
Not sure how you’ll feel about it now in a post-Marvel world, but at its time, def not one of the worst. Still more character development than Justice League the movie 😒
I conned 2 of my friends into seeing this by telling them that the other guy wanted to see it. When we came out they turned to each other and were like “why the hell did you want to see this, what’s wrong with you?” That’s when they both realized the truth and looked at me and I said “I didn’t think it was that bad.” 17 years later and I still get crap for pulling it off lol
The irony, of course, is that in the source material Mina Murray (a woman) is the leader of the group. And while she wasn't the Mary Sue feminists crave, she did save the day in the end.
And let’s face it, it might have played a part in, but he did pick a lot of bad movie before then and his career was kinda going nowhere anymore. Can blame his agent with the fact that he picked Avengers over LotR for example
prettzx the other movie he didn’t “get” was The Matrix, he was offered the part of Morpheus, and Will Smith was offered the role of Neo, Will Smith decided to do Wild Wild West, instead? LXG was supposed to be a franchise, that’s why Quartermain comes back to life at the end.
I think you don't necessarily had to know about Lotr to that time, but everybody knows the books the characters of this movies are from. At least I had read most of them when I was young and the ones I haven't read like the portrait of Dorian Gray or the Quatermain books, I at least knew about. And while I also read newer and longer books like Dune, Lotr always sounded like some boxer biography to me, which would have more entertaining in the end I guess...
They spend alot of time remaking good movies why dont the remake bad ones in to good films .This movie is a good idea but bad film and it deserves a remake.
Somehow true, somehow not. The main problem is that the movie is rushed and introduces too much characters at once. They better should make a series, so you can introduce one character per episode and slowly build up the story.

Try the fan cut on the IFDB. If the original version is a 4 or 5/10, I'd say the fan cut is a solid 6/10. It's called "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Strikes!" made by BionicBob.
An actor friend of mine worked on this movie in one of the lead roles and it killed his career.
@giftofgab247 They keep things deliberately obscure to avoid copyright problems (even though I think fan cuts may be considered Fair Use). Google fanedit info. The site you want should be the first result. Most IFDB fan edits are hosted there, but indirectly. They're in .DLC files, which you put into a site like Dcrypt, which will decrypt the .DLC file and give you a private download link from Mega. Let me know if you got any questions.
I was a kid when this came out and my dad and I LOVED it. I still love it, the concept is so wonderful. I see the flaws in it now as an adult but it influenced my creativity so much. I will DEFINITELY have to check out the comics!
You deserve so many more subscribers it's unreal...
The tone of this movie is refreshing
The making of this movie is like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, when you intentionally choose the obviously worst choice at every opportunity.
@@dizzle1119 Jekyl/Hyde is one of my favorite aspects of this movie, though I certainly love it as a whole.
Not sure how you’ll feel about it now in a post-Marvel world, but at its time, def not one of the worst.
Still more character development than Justice League the movie 😒
Not even CLOSE to being one of the worst movies of all time. Not even in the "top" 200 of bad popular movies.
R.I.P. Sean. I do love this movie
i actually really liked this film, i thought the casting and the visuals carried it through
Alan Moore's sheer contempt for films based on his comics, and the industry as a whole, is kinda hilarious.
I conned 2 of my friends into seeing this by telling them that the other guy wanted to see it. When we came out they turned to each other and were like “why the hell did you want to see this, what’s wrong with you?”
That’s when they both realized the truth and looked at me and I said “I didn’t think it was that bad.”
17 years later and I still get crap for pulling it off lol
but the movie still entertains 👍
Thank you for sharing that story.😂😂😂😂😂😂
League of Extraordinary *Gentlepeople* (2021)
The irony, of course, is that in the source material Mina Murray (a woman) is the leader of the group. And while she wasn't the Mary Sue feminists crave, she did save the day in the end.
Think the original comic books title was League of Extraordinary Gentlefolk, Lol
Then they changed it to Gentlemen sometime after ~
@waterywingz I’m not a comics expert but as far as I know, Alan Moore is far from PC.
The League of Extraordinary Ladies and Gentlemen...?
The film that made Sean Connery retire from acting
Not only retire, the movie killed his acting career.
The man of a thousand voices .all of them Scottish
Won't be missed. He's a prick
Christopher R I’m not Spanish, I’m Egyptian
not his last,

You should do a retrospective on the 2009 Dorian Gray movie.
I forgot that even existed.
@@niallreid7664 i never knew it did exist.
The what now?!
it's the one with the guy who played Caspian Narnia
About time!!! Thank you, Oliver. It's hard to believe that this film killed Sean Connery's acting career.
It didn't kill his acting career. He still receives offers. He's just having too good of a time in retirement
Connery was just making a big fuss to rationalise his retirement
And let’s face it, it might have played a part in, but he did pick a lot of bad movie before then and his career was kinda going nowhere anymore. Can blame his agent with the fact that he picked Avengers over LotR for example
@@oliviawilliams6204 he wanted a clean exit and blamed the director.
The number 1 source for media retrospectives, Oliver Harper.. Bravo sir Bravo
Didn’t “get” lord of the rings but this sounded good?
He chose . . . poorly.
Duncan well he did a 17 million dollar paycheck
prettzx the other movie he didn’t “get” was The Matrix, he was offered the part of Morpheus, and Will Smith was offered the role of Neo, Will Smith decided to do Wild Wild West, instead? LXG was supposed to be a franchise, that’s why Quartermain comes back to life at the end.
Could not see him as Gandalf after Ian’s portrayal being so good
I think you don't necessarily had to know about Lotr to that time, but everybody knows the books the characters of this movies are from. At least I had read most of them when I was young and the ones I haven't read like the portrait of Dorian Gray or the Quatermain books, I at least knew about. And while I also read newer and longer books like Dune, Lotr always sounded like some boxer biography to me, which would have more entertaining in the end I guess...
I'm glad I have this on BlueRay and DVD....gonna watch this tonight. Thank you for making this retrospective
this could have been such a good movie.
damned shame.
I always hate these movies more than others. Because they have every potential to be a great movie. Law abiding citizen is another example.
On the bright side it's one of those 'so bad it's good' movies. It was a riot in the theatre and I actually bought the dvd
It's an okay movie.
Sean Connery kept wanting changes in the script.
Excellent work on this video Mr. Harper.
Sean Connery's Cinematic finale
For now...
I'll say it again...Oliver Harper's reviews are simply the best there are on RUclips!
This was a very interesting time frame to explore and I enjoyed this movie as a 20 year old when it was released
This film is criminally underrated!
Sean Connery passed on playing Gandalf what a dumb move. His Gandalf would have been cool but Ian Mckellen still was awesome as the Grey wizard.
"Yoooo shall not pashhhhhhh!"
Not sure what he found hard to understand about Lord Of The Rings
@@jamstonjulian6947 He's never been fond of magic and medieval-set movies.
@The Creature and that weird guy in underwear with a moustache and pony tail in "Zardoz"
These retro reviews are the best. Well done sir, keep em comin
@@tiefensucht a movie iis'nt bad cause of characters its screenplay and writing that makes a good film not how many characters are in it , look at marval films .
Oliver Harper I found a picture online of the cast posing in character with a caption put on it that said "We were the Avengers before it was cool" lol.
Saw this years back when I was still a kid on DVD - remember really enjoying it back then....
Check out the fan cut "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Strikes!" on the IFDB.
I'm not sure I've ever seen an expensive blockbuster such as this with any less starpower in almost any role (apart from Sean Connery, of course).
A considerable "Who's That!?" of actors, when compared to other blockbusters of it's kind...
Watchmen was similar in that way. None of those actors could be considered "stars" by the general public.
@@kimbooley90 most of them went to work on various other projects, though, thus kind of justifying their casting.
I think Watchmen's quality of casting is leaps and bounds above this mess.
A much better film aswell, even if Watchmen isn't even that great either.
This and Mystery Men are both SO under appreciated!.That said, the scene where the Nautilus appears at the dock with the bad cgi is dreadful..Still a super fun flick!
The Super Squad.
I certainly remember the cinema when I watched this, being the only one in the room and sitting through the endless credit scene.
This had so much potential, they even had a budget they just needed to figure out what made the story special and focus on that
I loved this movie when I watched this during school time.
An underrated gem of a movie.
"The author Alan Moore was cynical of the film in it's development". Well that goes without saying
Karl well, Alan morre was pissed off at the wacthmen moviec for relly no reson
Sean Connery’s final film of his acting career.
Such a waste. Imagine if he'd been Gandalf instead.
Love Sean, but very glad Ian played Gandalf!
he voiced an animated movie after this i believe
Samur/Aye u mean sir billi
@@lukedaley17 yeah something like that.
Great video. Outstanding as usual. Love LXG. Keep up with the great content Oliver. Cheers!
This movie was and still is great.
Love that movie so much. I hope it have a second pt.
I actually kinda like this movie, a decent 7/10
+1
This is one of those cheesy movies that I never think about, but I watch it every time it’s on cable tv!
With it's pitfalls, I still enjoyed this flm.
I saw this at the cinema in 2003. I feel so old.
i love this movie it's in my top 30
Honestly Oliver you and Kim Justice and the only two channels I’ll click straight away no matter what when you post a new video. Also I really enjoyed In Search of Darkness, really looking forward to your next one.
The film might be completely ridiculous however the comic is superb
It is, one of the most creative graphic novels I've ever read. And the art fits the Victorian era style too
It deserves a proper treatment as a TV series.
The guy who goes to find Connery in South Africa played the motivational speaking company guy from The Office. I can’t not see him playing the same character in this.
This movie, The Mummy remake and Van Helsing all had decent concepts that were ruined by their hammy tone and bad CGI.
Hair Stylist Friend: Let me trim those frayed ends...
Alan Moore: Nooooooo! (Runs away)
This movie's biggest problem was its length and the year it was released
Blade 1 is still frigging awesome!
Wait? Moriarty attempts to start a war for money? That’s just the plot of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Then again, is there really anything else Moriarty can do in movies?
It's called source material.
@@thefonzkiss you say that like it's an excuse for unoriginality and no creativity.
Great channel, really love your work Oliver
Much appreciated!
28:25 "The recent Watchmen series, I thought, was brilliant!"
[Harry S. Plinkett voice] ................ Ohhhhh.
Yeah, I had to question his taste there too.
@@dariusq8894
Hey, I really liked the Watchmen tv series.
... Why is that a strange opinion? HBO's Watchmen got great reviews and audience reaction. It's more the outlier if he didn't like it.
Allen Quartermaine and Tom Sawyer should have been about the same age. Tom Sawyer was published in 1876, but it was set in the 1840’s.
