Arnie Herber’s career stats are kind of laughable now. 81tds, 106 int, 40% completion percentage and a passer rating of 50.1. Regardless, he’s still a hall of famer and an all time great.
And the man he passed to become #1 passer is Fran Tarkenton. And Fran had even less rules on his side, and played most of his career with 14 games a season. And he held that record for 19 years! The game has changed so much and the quarterbacks are staying healthier and playing longer. I wonder what the stats are for average yards per season of each QB’s career. That was a great vid to see how each QB moved up on the list.

Defenses are so much more sophisticated now days and yet his trade mark is his ability to read them faster than they can move and being stupid accurate with his intent. And if you watched that 2015 AFC champ game (hit 22x in the pocket) and still almost won it with a depleted offense he can definitely hang with the old school. The 2000's after all was a very smash mouth era "he got jacked up!!!" Rodgers would have been pretty ok as well though he game is based on the 8seconds after the 5seconds he had in the pocket and if defenses have more room to hit he's definitely taking a bigger beating. Peyton in a non salary cap era on a team like the 49ers would have 3x the QB Montana was easily atleast in the regular season, but if he ended up on a team that couldn't buy him the best of everything he may have a hard time. It's hard to say for Brees, he's had a loaded offense that played in a lot of catch-up ball so his states are a bit inflated as teams play softer defense when their up by a lot late. John elway today would do a bit better today as he's the Superior version of Rodgers. Warren moon would actually be allowed to play in the NFL earlier in his career so he would have much better maybe all time leader numbers.

He's remembered mistakenly as a disappointment I think bc he was a super high draft pick and it didn't work out for him in his first place. He was supposed to be the permanent QB to launch the Carolina Panthers as a franchise. He wasn't. But he ended up having a great career. Testaverde is remembered more fondly but he was somewhat similar, was a 1st overall for the Bucs, ended up having a very strong (and long) career but mostly elsewhere.

So many shocking things about this. Seeing Ben Roethlisberger that low, Eli that high, Warren Moon I didn’t realize was that high. Makes you realize a guy like Sammy Baugh must have been an absolute revelation back in the day.
Brady has a realistic shot at nearly 90k yards! It may never be broken if he can set that. With there being 17 games now in the regular season, I expect to see this list completely change in the next 10-15 years, but Brees and Brady will likely still have set such a high bar it will no doubt take an unbelievable career to equal or best them.

Dan was and still is the man to me, he was typically the only weapon on his team and was basically a statue in the backfield, all defensive knew he would be passing and year after year Dan did exactly that, I don't think the man has 10 yards rushing in his career, Dan was the complete pocket passing quarterback, I was young when Fran played and Fouts, I saw Marinos entire career and no one tossed a pigskin better.
Marino was 20 years ahead of his time,at the end of the day football is a team sport. That being said,the Dolphins only had Marino and a average to below average defense and no running attack. To me,Marino is the best pure passer to play the game. I watched Marino from college to retirement.

Norm Snead played a long time. Taken in the same draft as Fran Tarkenton, and ironically involved in a trade for him later on. Didn't have as good of a career though.
Fran Tarkenton was in first for almost 20 years, then stayed in the top 10 for 40 years after retiring. Shows how long it took for other teams to have their own “Fran Tarkenton” and many teams still haven’t had a franchise QB that was on or above his level while the Packers had 2 and the Colts had 3 if you count Unitas and Luck. And technically the Broncos had 2, in terms of starters, but not in terms of franchise yards.
Who would have thought that a forgettable Stan Humphries would be the only San Diego QB to lead the Chargers to the Super Bowl? Let's hope that Justin Herbert can turn that around.

All time leaders is a definitely a longevity stat. I mean Frank Gore is the 3rd all time highest rushing leader. Point being is don't confuse longevity (which has merit for sure) with necessarily the best.
Matt Ryan has the potential to be 5th in all time passing yards in NFL History when it's all said and done for him, surpassing Dan Marino and Philip Rivers and only Rodgers and Ben would make him be 6th or 7th (but given Rodgers and Ben are more injury prone QB's than Matt is, it'll be interesting to see what plays out), and only then will people say that passing yards never mattered anyways 🤦

I can’t decide if Vinnie Testaverde was good or not. He’s a leader in all categories, both good and bad. So...good enough to stay around for a long, long time. But I’ve never seen anyone else be on so many all-time lists who won’t ever be in the HOF.
Warren Moon had another 20,000+ yards in the Canadian Football League, so in his career, he had over 70,000 yards. Sure, it is a different league, but he should have some consideration for that.

Marino was 20 years ahead of his time,at the end of the day football is a team sport. That being said,the Dolphins only had Marino and a average to below average defense and no running attack. To me,Marino is the best pure passer to play the game. I watched Marino from college to retirement.
Warren Moon threw the prettiest ball I've ever seen, but Dan was not far behind and had one of the quickest releases I've ever seen.

Peyton Manning is the best regular-season passer of all time. Marino is second to him. Again, regular season.
But playoffs are almost a different game. Neither of them was great in the playoffs. Putting up huge numbers in the regular season is different from playoff presure.

Not only did he come back from his busted shoulder, he broke record after record doing it. And as a undersized QB compared to others, he had to find throwing lanes and predict where his receiver's would go. The man's a legend

Norm Snead played a long time. Taken in the same draft as Fran Tarkenton, and ironically involved in a trade for him later on. Didn't have as good of a career though.

Fran Tarkenton was in first for almost 20 years, then stayed in the top 10 for 40 years after retiring. Shows how long it took for other teams to have their own “Fran Tarkenton” and many teams still haven’t had a franchise QB that was on or above his level while the Packers had 2 and the Colts had 3 if you count Unitas and Luck. And technically the Broncos had 2, in terms of starters, but not in terms of franchise yards.

First football player on the cover of sports illustrated. Dudes a hall of famer. If he won just one of those championships he’d be on every top 10 quarterback list.

Not many modern QBs would have done as well earlier, Brady defiantly would have as his ability to read defenses and decision making alone would have far outclassed the older school defenses. Defenses are so much more sophisticated now days and yet his trade mark is his ability to read them faster than they can move and being stupid accurate with his intent. Brady is also A-ok throwing the ball away to live another down which would help him a lot. And if you watched that 2015 AFC champ game (hit 22x in the pocket) and still almost won it with a depleted offense he can definitely hang with the old school. The 2000's after all was a very smash mouth era "he got jacked up!!!"
Rodgers would have been pretty ok as well though he game is based on the 8seconds after the 5seconds he had in the pocket and if defenses have more room to hit he's definitely taking a bigger beating.
Peyton in a non salary cap era on a team like the 49ers would have 3x the QB Montana was easily atleast in the regular season, but if he ended up on a team that couldn't buy him the best of everything he may have a hard time.
It's hard to say for Brees, he's had a loaded offense that played in a lot of catch-up ball so his states are a bit inflated as teams play softer defense when their up by a lot late.
John elway today would do a bit better today as he's the Superior version of Rodgers.
Warren moon would actually be allowed to play in the NFL earlier in his career so he would have much better maybe all time leader numbers.

All time leaders is a definitely a longevity stat. I mean Frank Gore is the 3rd all time highest rushing leader. Point being is don't confuse longevity (which has merit for sure) with necessarily the best.

Matt Ryan has the potential to be 5th in all time passing yards in NFL History when it's all said and done for him, surpassing Dan Marino and Philip Rivers and only Rodgers and Ben would make him be 6th or 7th (but given Rodgers and Ben are more injury prone QB's than Matt is, it'll be interesting to see what plays out), and only then will people say that passing yards never mattered anyways 🤦

Heck, when Favre retired in 2010, he racked up the most wins in NFL history and people called him a loser. We like to say that this matters, but when another name holds the title, now it becomes pointless. When Steve Largent had the record for most receiving yards and catches and TD's for a WR, did people say that his records aren't impressive? Yet, people constantly praise Jerry Rice for holding the same records, so what if I said that his stats don't matter? What if I said that because Jerry Rice now holds the records we need to take out Steve Largent from the Hall of Fame? I'll look wrong from the standpoint of the public, right? And that's why I don't understand the reasoning to tear down the reputation of a player when you get no benefit from it. Records are meant to be broken and the game has changed, sure, but why try to diminish the career of someone going for all time records that they can reach? I can’t decide if Vinnie Testaverde was good or not. He’s a leader in all categories, both good and bad. So...good enough to stay around for a long, long time. But I’ve never seen anyone else be on so many all-time lists who won’t ever be in the HOF.

Warren Moon had another 20,000+ yards in the Canadian Football League, so in his career, he had over 70,000 yards. Sure, it is a different league, but he should have some consideration for that.
