the problem is greed- the cheap property prices in these areas attract ppl looking to buy property as an investment and then they come in and increase the rent to levels that are on par with bigger cities. this inevitably causes property prices & rent to increase in the area.

The Sate of Maine's license plate logo used to read " Vacation Land ", not sure what it is now haven't lived there in years, my point is the State has always put all of it's apples in the tourist's industry and catered to this very short seasonal opportunity to make as much money as you could knowing it was going to be a long, long cold gray winter. State does very well financially, most businesses did well while local banks eager to loan if needed however the blue collar back bone workers of the state have always lived day to day and come fall it's the beginning of a long, cold hungry winter. I have always felt the State of Maine had abandoned it's blue collar hard working folks and spends most of it's energy and attention into the tourist trade end of business. It takes all three to mutually agree on sharing the profits only as long as the first two do their fair share. One must never forget, minimum wage is not a smart wage to pay, but a wage that guarantees hardship.

But it's just crazy because you're sort of stuck in a trap. You work so hard to make money but then everything is so expensive that you just end up spending it and the prices are just skyrocketing and as this video point out there's no safe place anymore to live in terms of financial security

Denver set up secure areas with heated tents on platforms with cots, portable (nice) full bathrooms and showers, one hot meal a day, and offices on site to help people with permanent housing, jobs, food stamps, transportation, etc.. It's safer for families, and costs the city less than the homeless living on the street, and broken families. Once people have a tent they can stay until they get a place, no packing up daily.
Tiny home villages can also be very helpful as temp housing under these same set ups...
I'm not sure what to do about the Blackrocks and Blackrock wannabe's...but having a net to help the people is a start.

The government tried that in Ireland. Landlords are now selling up as fast as they can and getting out of renting leaving this activity to large scale REIT's who buy houses in the 100's if not 1000's. These new style large scale landlords can afford to sit on empty units for the needed 2 years to break the legal obligation to hold rent prices down. They then release these vacant units onto the market. They can then charge what they like.
Many counties in Ireland have tiny numbers of rentals available now, often with 50 to 100 people forming queues to compete for the scarce units. The old style solution of moving to rural areas to get cheap rents no longer applies. The whole country is now a high rent area.
This is happening worldwide from Canada to Australia and anywhere good jobs are available.

Not trying to be insensitive to their situation, but if they all rely on disability payments from the government, they should not expect the rest of us to support them and not complain about not being able to make ends meet. If they are not capable of working then they should be thankful for getting any assistance at all. In many countries they would be on the street and with no support of any kind. Assuming they could pick up a phone, why not look into telemarketing or customer service type jobs? That would not require mobility or high degree of training and would provide income.

Exactly. I try to balance the mindset of those in need and those that rely on the government. Never rely on the government for help. People need to learn in this country again how to be self-sufficient. We all make choices and have options in this country. If most Americans saw how other countries lived, especially third-world countries, people would not complain as much. And for the record, many people on "disability" are complete liars. I've known far too many on it that don't need to be, but actual disabled people can't get on it. It's a joke of a system.

For people on often permanent disabilities Social Security is often the only choice. People in this situation used to be housed at low cost in most European countries but then the governments sold off the public housing and came to rely on small scale private landlords to supply housing. This supply has now dried up as the older landlords sell up but are not replaced by a new set of younger landlords, who cannot afford even one house not mind a second one to rent out. These small scale landlords have been replaced by large scale landlords and investors, often buying up entire developments pusning up prices and pushing first-time buyers out of the market.
Many European countries now face an entire generation of people not able to afford their own house, living with their parents or on the streets or in emergency hostels often for decades.
It has become so bad that only people on very high incomes can afford a place of their own.
