You are very welcome! I'm an 80s kids as well. There is just something about that decade that is unique and special. I don't even know how to describe it. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
I have literally purchased my first ever table saw, and a Cricut just because of this video. I've started getting into LEDs and your channel has been a MASSIVE inspiration. Thank you for all you do! I had an idea of slightly reducing the depth in the rear (so moving the LEDs closer) but then have room for the controller to sit directly behind the frame. A female DC port can be added facing downwards so that you can use a normal DC outlet (in my case, preferably a USB-to-DC cable) and then power can be run either within the wall (not recommended) or at least you can get by with a standard USB wall outlet (provided it supplies up to 3A). This would mean you'd need a controller for each individual box but through WLED it can all be controlled through a single app anyways. Just my idea for what I hope to do once the last of my Alibaba packages arrive :) Another downside though would be the power limitation. As each pixel needs ~60mAh, and this is ~70leds it appears, it would need 4.2A to work at full 100% white. Because the USB-to-DC cable can only output 2A, brightness would be limited to 40-50%. In the dark I don't believe this would be a major issue as I tend to run all of my LEDs at 30-50% brightness anyways.
Thanks so much and i love hearing stuff like this! Its a fun little hobby for sure. I love your ideas! Sounds like yours will have a much more finished look than mine. Each one having their own controller is no big deal at all as long as you dont mind the extra cost of the controllers. I'm the same way. ive never had the need to run the leds very bright but if I actually had them on during the day maybe I would want the extra power? But like you said, nothing is as convient as the standard usb wall plug. Thanks so much for sharing and let me know how everything turns out!

100% Agree! I still think this is my favorite project I did just because of the unlimited ways it can be easily customized! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!
hey chris just poppin in again and thank you for all ur videos i been needing somethin like this in my life and no im nonstop goin got it! great buisness you got goin on here
It would be interesting to only sand one side. I have been told you sand only the back side and leave the front side clear. The edge light refracts off of the back frosted panel and you supposedly get the exact same effect/look with exception it's much easier to clean the clear, non-frosted front. Also, I've been told always flame polish the edge whereby the edge lights shine through which will create a much brighter and better illumination. Thanks for your vids. They're really great.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Those are all really good ideas and if I do something like this again I will for sure try doing it that way!
So awesome that you put these videos together with such detail. I’d recommend opening an Etsy store, a lot of people watching will just want to order them! And you clearly put a lot of work, so I would expect them to cost quite a bit. Great content man!
Thanks so much and I'm glad you liked the project! Maybe if I lose my day job I'll give it a shot! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment :)
Awesome video !. Nice speaking voice, great fantastic video editing, perfect music choices and fantastic, awesome project. Just enough tutorial without going overboard. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Never stop your creative venture and good luck in the future.
Just found your channel yesterday and your content has my wallet quivering in fear. I want to do so many of your projects.. I’m going to have to get a 2nd job 😅
Lol this made me laugh! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! And I always tell people, there are much worse ways you could spend your money on lol.
@@ChrisMaherDIY most definitely worse ways. 😂 I just recently watched your automotive LED strip review video.. But, this immediately got me wondering.. How difficult would it be to create your own strips for your car, for vastly improved customization in patterns and such? 🤔 I recently installed some lights in my own car and am somewhat disappointed in the available options on the app.
A cleaner look would've been to terminate the wires from the boxes to 3-pin connectors and a nice 3-core wire in between. A clean, easy quick disconnect between frames and the PSU+controller box :)
Nice work! I enjoy your content--it would be fun to do a community town hall to talk about projects. I have been wanting to convert some boring 12 v LED landscape lights to WLED fixtures. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for the great question! You can for sure use Ws2815 with the esp32. I just made a video today on this! Feel free to check it out! ruclips.net/video/zbhdH-qSANc/видео.html
Please create a spinning POV Lamp using LEDS. Ideally, you would create a high resolution multi-leg spinning light that translated rotational speed to refresh rate and converting standard 1080p resolution video to polar coordinates to drive the LEDs. It shouldn't be too difficult. Please create a tutorial for it. Love your content, thanks.
I don’t think you need to convert png files to svg. If you import the file to Cricut design space it will convert it automatically. Either that or it reads png files. I’ve uploaded both png and svg files to my cricut. I have been using these machines since back when they only had cartridges and were mainly used for paper. I love this idea. So simple yet so cool.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the to comment! I appreciate the advise and I'll have to try that out! I'm still pretty new with the cricut but love it so far!! Thanks buddy!
How would they look if you put the vinyl on the other side of the acrylic? Like have the black acrylic and put the vinyl behind that to hide the design until the light is turned on?
Great question! That was originally what I was planning on doing. The short answer is it does work and it does look cool but you do lose some of the sharpness of whatever vinyl image you use. You can tell what it is but its a little blurry. Thanks for watching and great question!
Would you happen to know how to connect a Govee strip to a different controller? They use red, white, and black wires soldered onto their board labeled B, g, and vcc respectively.
Thanks so much for watching! I did make a quick video on how I was able to get some Govee led lights to work with WLED. Here is that video! ruclips.net/video/l0sRG1WAbq0/видео.html
Hey Chris, I've been messing around with LED strips for awhile but your projects are motivating me even more. Question: is that Elmer's foam board you're using? They also have the corrugated board, which is cheaper. Do you know if they have the same white material on the front? Thanks
Thanks so much for watching and great question! If you only supply the beginning part of the led strip with power, as the strip goes on, you begin to lose power and the lights will start to look different since they are not getting enough juice. Adding the extra + and - at the end is just providing extra power so that all the lights will have enough. Hope that makes sense! Great question!
Thats a great idea! That was initially what I was planning on doing but even though it does look cool and would work for certain images, you lose some of the crisp/sharpness to the designs when behind vs in front which is why I ended up just doing it in the front. Hope that makes sense! Thanks so much for the great idea!
I just found some broken ceiling LED panel among my junkyard of these sizes, they contain frosted glasses maybe I repurpose those for something like this 🤔🤔
Thanks so much for watching and great question! You for sure can sand instead of the white acrylic. It should still have a similar effect as long as you give it a good sanding. But I would probably sand a little bit, test it out, see how it looks and sand some more and keep repeating until it looks how you want it to.
First of all, these look sweet! Thanks for sharing! Do you prefer this design or do you like the frosted acrylic with underglow more? Thinking about making one or the other, but since the frosted takes less LEDs, it would leave more for another project. Are there any major disadvantages compared to what you showed in this video? Is it way dimmer or anything?
Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I would say these get a little brighter than the edge lit design. However the edge lit design is not as bulky as this one. So there are positive and negatives to each lol. I know that doesn't help! But i think I personally like this design better since i can swap out the images.
@@ChrisMaherDIY I ended up getting the material for these back lit ones, but if I did edge lit, I was planning to use the vinyl on stencil sheet like you did here to keep it swappable. Btw your WLED videos were super helpful on my last project which led me to this one.
If you could, what was the cost of supplies (not including the printer) and how much time per box? It's really incredible how far you can go with these.
Thanks so much for watching and great question! Man that's always a tough question. The wood is pretty cheap. Maybe 7 dollars. Acrylic is about 10. lights for 1 entire strip of 16 feet is like 35 dollars but you don't use nearly that amount for one box. The esp device is like 7 dollars. Power block/cable anywhere from 10 to 30 dollars. But then you have the supplies for the vinyl. If you are literally buying everything to make 1 box, its very expensive lol.
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks so much for the reply.. and of course it was never about saving money, but building it with your 2 hands. I have to say, I started looking up content cause I want to turn my young boys room into a Star Wars theme. You've really inspired me (and as a consequence ordered about $600 of stuff through your links hah) Bought several Displate wall art and will be backlighting them. Also looking at building Star Wars space station wall panels.
@@2_Bike_is_Life man that sounds like such a fun project! Even more cool since it's for your son!! But you got it! It's always a more fun using your own hands to build something! I'd love to see how it all turns out if you have time to share down the road!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Will do. Painting the walls, so I am cutting/mudding over a channel in the drywall for cross runs, and behind the drywall for drop runs to supply power. Completely stealth. Might want to consider that instead of surface mount wiring if you have permanence in mind.
Thanks for watching and for the comment! I basically just did a lot of google image searches but I also bought some off Etsy. You can find almost anything on ets. Just search for an what you want and put "svg file" at the end of the search. Hope that helps!
@@ChrisMaherDIY thank you! I am thinking of making tiles for a wall, so to make them as thin and light as possible I am wondering if I can attach led tape to the side of the acrylic with, perhaps, white background paper. Do you think it would look good?
@@Sergiuss555 By side of the acrylic do you mean trying to light the edge of the acrylic and have it shine through like I did in this video? ruclips.net/video/0_TtHkBB3vA/видео.html
@@Sergiuss555 No worries! The video I just sent the link in the last comment was a video I did a while back where I edge lit the acrylic but the acrylic was much thicker than the stuff I used in the newer video I made. There are pros and cons of doing it either way!
Chris! Love this project. I’m planning a build of my own and a question. Where are you hiding the project box? I’m thinking that I’d like to keep the external guts to a minimum. Ideally, power cord only. I bought the project box you recommended and would like to stash it inside the frame but it’s going to be a little big and may block some lights. I considered affixing it to the back cover, but wanted your thoughts. Perhaps a way smaller box that could hold the esp8266 module? I’m excited to share my results. Just waiting for my new table saw to arrive! Thanks always! Doug
Thanks so much and I still think this was my favorite project I've done! Quick question, what are you referring to when you say project box? If your only doing 1 box you would not need the big power supply that I used. But I will generally have the power box and the controller near the wall plug and then run the small wires from the controller to the led strip. Those wires can easily be hidden with any cord management stuff you find on Amazon. I will then just usually hide the power supply that's near the wall outlet with either furniture, a plant, electric fireplace, speakers etc. Anything to get it out of sight. Hope that helps!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thank you. I was referring to the black plastic box you use to house the controller board. If I find a smaller one, I could stick it to the inside wall of the back cover. Does that make sense?
@@Roadrunnerwoodworks ahh gotcha! Yeah honestly I think you could for sure do it inside if you found a small one. I also don't think you would notice any interference with the light being potentially blocked a little bit either! I'm excited to see how it all turns out!
Do you have any knowledge about pixel matrixes etc.? I really want to make a led screen/pixel matrix displaying a cherryblossom tree with falling petals from LEDs...
@@ChrisMaherDIY I actually found a kickstarter concept that matches the idea I was looking for. It is called divoom pixoo 64x64, it was only 100 bucks so saves me time. I still need to finish my wall light and infinity cube anyway haha. I might try making a led cube built from matrixes after though. It looks very complicated but the effect is so mesmerizing to look at, very beautiful.
@@HarigeRups I've heard of Divoom! I love their pixel displays! I'll have to check out that one specifically. I think I've seen a few videos with the cube your going to try. I agree, it looks AMAZING but also agree it looks sooooo complicated! You have more patience than I do. Let me know if you end up making it! I'd love to see the process!
@@ChrisMaherDIY I will do that!:) The led cube I want to make is 64x64x64 dimensions, very big lol. The guy who made the tutorial/process video about this cube (Malt Whiskey), also happens to be Dutch like me. He has been answering some of my questions as to what kind of tools you really need and an estimate of what the cost of making one will be. Never thought I would actually consider making something like that since I have no educational background for this lol. Learnt everything from watching yt videos, like yours for example. So keep up the good work and I will watch your newly uploaded vid now :)
@@HarigeRups That's going to be very big!! For sure try making a video of the process! It really is amazing what you can learn by watching some yt videos and having some patience!
I wish I had the tools and the woodworking talent to do this unfortunately don’t have the room for the tools. Very creative keep it up now I have a good question is there a possibility that you might be interested in selling this I would be interested in buying them or two what ever you are willing to do
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! Yeah getting the tools is certainly a slow process and you also have to have the space for it. Maybe someday down the road if I lose my day job I'll look to try making them to sell but for now its just a fun little hobby. Thanks though for asking! That means a lot!
Great job Sir! For me is too complicated this and i dont have the tools. Can you please tell me if i can find somewhere finished vinyl images for example about Halo universe so i dont need to buy a Cricut Maker? Its easier just to buy a few vinyl images and acrylics and inexpensively swap out one image for another . Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks so much! I would recommend going on Etsy and just search halo vinyl decals. If you cant find one you like, just message someone who has other images you like and see if they can make a custom one for you. Most people are more than happy to do that and then just send the decal to you in the mail!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thank you so much for the reply. One more thing.Once i get the decal how can i make it stronger? Do i have to use the transfer tape/ stencil sheet method? Is it the only way?
@@GRJOHN360 transfer tape is the only way I've seen and for sure do the wet method to avoid bubbles. To make it stronger I would maybe put a thin piece of hard see though plastic over it to give it some extra protection.
Thanks for watching and hello from the US! I'm using WLED installed on an esp8266 module. Here is the video I made that goes over the setup. ruclips.net/video/l8OMi7SMpqs/видео.html or you can install wled onto an esp32 device: ruclips.net/video/TOEnFKLm9Sw/видео.html
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Thats very nice of you to ask! I wish I could but as of right now, i'm just keeping this as a fun hobby. If anything changes down the road and I have more time, i'll for sure let you know!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yeah I'm not sure how that all works. I figured since I just made these for fun and I'm not selling them that its ok but I could very well be incorrect in that assumption. I have always wondered though how so many people are able to sell licensed content / products on Etsy.

Wonderful diy. Thanks for sharing.
Dude this is awesome. Really if you can find a big enough vinyl print shop, the possibilities are endless for cool signs or lighted images.
100% Agree! I still think this is my favorite project I did just because of the unlimited ways it can be easily customized! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!
hey chris just poppin in again and thank you for all ur videos i been needing somethin like this in my life and no im nonstop goin got it! great buisness you got goin on here
This looks so good. Thx for the Inspiration 😊
Man these came out great - Amazing stuff!
Thanks so much and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Love the street fighter effect
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yeah, I really liked that one as well! Thanks buddy!
Great video to dissuade most of us from doing this

@@ChrisMaherDIY what led lighting is used? That cheap Amazon stuff don't flow like that.
@@thefirstkingridge For this I used some ws2812b from amazon. Here is the link: amzn.to/2VOS4bi
A clean, easy quick disconnect between frames and the PSU+controller box :)
amazing lights!
Thanks so much!
Nice work! I enjoy your content--it would be fun to do a community town hall to talk about projects. I have been wanting to convert some boring 12 v LED landscape lights to WLED fixtures. Any ideas?
Can a control module be made using arduino with WS2815 led strip?
WS2815 works with 12 volts. You can think of it as an advanced version of WS2812.
Thanks so much for the great question! You can for sure use Ws2815 with the esp32. I just made a video today on this! Feel free to check it out! ruclips.net/video/zbhdH-qSANc/видео.html
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks for video. Could you please add subtitles?
Do you have any idea how cool this is
How would they look if you put the vinyl on the other side of the acrylic? Like have the black acrylic and put the vinyl behind that to hide the design until the light is turned on?
Great question! That was originally what I was planning on doing. The short answer is it does work and it does look cool but you do lose some of the sharpness of whatever vinyl image you use. You can tell what it is but its a little blurry. Thanks for watching and great question!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thanks for the response. Keep up the good work.!
@@ChrisMaherDIY thank you so much! I just want govee lights to be cool!
Hey Chris, I've been messing around with LED strips for awhile but your projects are motivating me even more.
Question: is that Elmer's foam board you're using?
They also have the corrugated board, which is cheaper. Do you know if they have the same white material on the front?
Thanks
Hi Chris!
I was just wondering why you are supplying the last Lightbox with another + and - ?
Thanks so much for watching and great question! If you only supply the beginning part of the led strip with power, as the strip goes on, you begin to lose power and the lights will start to look different since they are not getting enough juice. Adding the extra + and - at the end is just providing extra power so that all the lights will have enough. Hope that makes sense! Great question!
Awesome! New sub for sure
Thanks so much! Appreciate the support and thanks for watching buddy!
Dr Disrespect would love this one 18:06
hahaha yeah he would for sure!
What does it look like putting the stencil behind the acrylic panel? Just a thought.
Thats a great idea! That was initially what I was planning on doing but even though it does look cool and would work for certain images, you lose some of the crisp/sharpness to the designs when behind vs in front which is why I ended up just doing it in the front. Hope that makes sense! Thanks so much for the great idea!
I just found some broken ceiling LED panel among my junkyard of these sizes, they contain frosted glasses
maybe I repurpose those for something like this 🤔🤔
Can you take sanding acrylic instead of white acrylic?
You've really inspired me (and as a consequence ordered about $600 of stuff through your links hah)
Bought several Displate wall art and will be backlighting them.
@@2_Bike_is_Life Amazing! That's next level!!
hey chris i was wondering where you found the other images for on the panels
im having a hard time finding other pictures/ svg
Thanks for watching and for the comment! I basically just did a lot of google image searches but I also bought some off Etsy. You can find almost anything on ets. Just search for an what you want and put "svg file" at the end of the search. Hope that helps!
@@ChrisMaherDIY hey Chris thanks for your reaction
Imma check it out on etsy thanks alot!
Awesome job! How would white and black acrylic look different?
The White acrylic gets a little brighter than the black acrylic but that's about it! Thanks so much for watching!
@@ChrisMaherDIY ah yes, my bad, I didn't watch carefully. Looks great! Thanks
I unfortunately do not have any experience with matrixes. But man, I love your idea! That would look so amazing on the wall as an art piece!
@@ChrisMaherDIY I will do that!:)
The led cube I want to make is 64x64x64 dimensions, very big lol.

You shouldn't be using images you aren't licensed to make money off of. Disney doesn't play.
