      Hey the Grinning God himself! Glad to hear you found this constructive, I hope it wasn't too painful and I look forward to seeing how your Patreon develops - and I will happily pin a comment to the top of this video in the future if things improve so keep me posted. As for MMF I'm not sure, it should retain folder hierarchies when uploading zip files right? Other monthly releases I've downloaded on there have had it. But basically just simple stuff, each model gets its own folder, and if you want to go even further you can then sort each models unsupported and supported files into their own respective subdirectories. Little touches like that just make the whole end user experience that much smoother.

    Hey there @Once in a Six Side, I run an Etsy shop with a commercial license to sell from several creators and I absolutely love your content. I have resigned to putting the time in to do supports myself for all my vendors due to the amount of printing I do for each individual figure and the pains you bring awareness to really resonate with me. Excellent content. 👑

      @OnceinaSixSide  Год назад +5

      Thank you! It can be painful indeed, even more so when you pay for a merchants license! It's such a shame too that so many design studios don't put in the effort up front with the printability of their files. It starts to feel like it's more about quantity than quality with a lot of them.

    Thanks, learned a lot. Honestly this is part of why i dont offer pre-supported right now as im afraid of accidentally skipping an island where people presume its been perfectly supported. But i will watch your other vids and maybe change my mind(and skills)

      Hey no worries at all, thanks for dropping by! I really loved your rendition of Buttermilk Bob, it's so good lol.
      I think if you can offer presupported files its a huge value-add since I think most people don't trust themselves to do it either, or are (rightly) worried about using auto supports. I recommend using UV tools just to double check you've got all the islands, and then if your test prints are good you can be confident distributing presupported files.

    This comment on resin on the FEP after a print breaking a printer happened to me.
    I got my first printer back in December and printed some files I had found not knowing anything about 3D printing and had a big lump stuck to my fep. Not spotting it I put on the next print and it tore a hole in my fep and poured resin directly into my LCD.
    Brand new 3D printer and I had to replace an FEP and LCD to run maybe my 5th print.
    It killed my motivation to print for months.. but here I am 6 months later, much more knowledgeable.
    I love your content, and am going through the back catalogue to learn even more!

  • @UriskOfTheFae

    Between you and Tableflip Foundry I've become fairly confident supporting my own prints! Thank you!
    Grinning God's subscriptions have changed drastically in a year, wow. I thiiiink they took a bit of a hiatus, it looks like now they just release one model a month (but I'm not even sure if they released last month's mini on all platforms), and I'm finding it hard to tell if the list of what you get on their MMF Tribe is accurate. I ended up with a free trial for the month, boy howdy it'll renew at almost $10USD for just the one mini a month. Their Tribe benefits list says you also get access to the previous month's mini, but IDK if they're actually doing that, or if the previous month's even made it onto MMF Tribes. It'll be interesting for sure to see if the improved the supports on the old Welcome Pack model, and if the models they're putting out now have better supports.
    Patreon/Tribes reviews are super helpful, whether it's a video from you or people gathering their reviews on a forum somewhere. I picked up a subscription to a different company last month who I'd discovered made a habit of picturing base sets in the image of the full collection that weren't actually included with the purchase. No disclaimer anywhere! They seemed to have changed that on most of their packs after I pointed it out. (Plus the pre-supports on their MMF kickstarter collecting some old releases were garbage, and that month's pre-supports looked better for the printer but a nightmare for model scaring.) Definitely super valuable for folks to share their experiences!

    It's so interesting how the resin printing market has evolved. You have the super creative types sculpting all the models. Then they farm it out to the consciousness types that carefully scan through layer by layer supporting everything, then checking, redoing, rechecking, testing and repeat. At least that's the concept.

    Love the videos mate. I'm just getting into some patreons for 3d printing and I didn't really consider that the pre supported files would be poor. I can't quite fathom how to support the files myself so I have to trust the patreon creator to support the file properly for me. I'll be more careful about looking at the files and checking my vat after a print considering this.

    Just found your channel. I love the idea of having technical reviews of these creators. So far I've tried to avoid using presupported models unless I know that the presupport work was done by someone good, and also so I can get practice in supporting models.
    I'm fairly sure that I've ruined my fep with the few pre-supported files that I have printed. Thankfully I've taken on the habit of running a tank clean after every print that might have had those little bits that might stay on the fep.
    I would love to see like a 1 year follow up to this one to see if they have taken your advice and improved.

    Thanks for the vid. I must watch your supporting vid. One can never watch enough of those lol.
    For organising the files you could have opened the included lychee project files and used the list of file name to find and organise them into folders. Not that you should need to.
    Also if the files were supported in lychee, the layer height seleted in resin setting focuses the island scan function, as would the xy resolution defined by the printer profile. For example if the artist has layers set to 50um and proceeded to support the model then there will be island when you check the files if you like to print at 30um or 20um. No need to use UV tools if you set a low layer height, 20 to 25um and do your support process from there.
    Not all the islands you talked about were due to this but it looked like a few were. Others were just missed or ignored. Pre supporting is tedious and time consuming and at some point the "good enough" mentality kicks in. Especially if you see yourself as an artist first and are supporting your models with value added convenience type mind set.
    Missing islands on very small obsured details or qwerky geometry really isn't an issue as long as there are layers above it to "mop it up". A few layers isn't an issue as long as the pixels of the unsupported geometry doesn't expand to much on proceeding layers.
    You being a professional pre supporter, I understand you need to catch all the islands and place them in a way that will preserve the digital geometry as much as possible to maintain a professional standard. But there not Pokemon, you haven't got to catch them all.
    Thanks again for the vid.

    The paint job came out great. I assume you used your airbrush at some point? Or was it just layering/drybrushing the reds on top a dark base coat by hand? Regardless, it would be a really fun piece to put on the table. If anyone points out that the leg is wonky, tell them it was wounded in a previous fight!
    Also, mind if I ask what glue you were using? I still haven't settled on a brand I like yet, and have found a lot of superglues recommended for model assembly either dry instantly but are fragile, or take longer to cure than my shaky tweezer-holding hands can keep parts aligned. It's also neat that what you're using has an applicator.

    • @OnceinaSixSide
      @OnceinaSixSide  2 года назад +1

      Cheers! Yep I I used an airbrush initially to base coat black, zenithal highlight in white, then cover with transparent red, then it was basically all just dry brushing. I have all the footage for it, I just haven't had the chance to cut it together into a video yet.
      As for the superglue its a brand a get from my local grocery store called Selley's and its definitely on the slower more frustrating side. I'm still on the hunt for a good superglue myself.

      @@DanielVisOneCade I appreciate that :) Given I can't sort the Patreon search results, I could either create a spreadsheet of active Patreons with x amount of subs, or I could say limit myself to the first 3 pages with a D3 as Patreon by default seems to sort from largest to smallest- which I may do. I dunno yet, we'll see.
      My feeling is if you're going to enter a public and competitive marketplace, you should be prepared for people to review what you have on offer - and that it may not be favorable. My hope is in cases like this that Grinning God improves in the areas I was critical of, which ultimately will benefit them as a creator as much as it does their customers. It would also be nice if other Patreons take heed too because unfortunately there are so many bad presupported files out there and I really want to see this change.
