Exceptional polar patterns! Sony has decades of knowledge in microphone manufacture with most of their models highly sought after decades after release. The 100 is typically neutral, as were the 800G, the fabulous C48, and their many modern utility pro mics. Their signature is no signature.
Really well said, and I agree completely. The Japanese take their hi-fi seriously and other brands like Sanken and, yes, AT confirm that. (A friend and colleague characterizes Audio-Technica as the Toyota of mic manufacturers. With a model for every budget, they have remarkable consistency and many value points, and their high end mics deliver results every bit as impressive as our German friends.) The C48 does not get enough love, for sure. A female voiceover colleague of mine selected the C48 for herself because it did not grab onto her touch of sibilance, whereas the AKG 414 in use elsewhere in her facility did.
That mic complements your voice really well. TBH I think I preferred the C100 to all of the others save the U87 in that regard. I, and many others, personally dislike the TLM103 and find it lackluster for nearly every voice I have heard it on. Everything sounds great in a vacuum; so Bandrew's comparisons create exactly what we need to hear male spoken word on various mics. You provide a great service, B. The 414 works well on certain voices, but emphasizes highs: if you have sibilance, male or female, avoid it. Likewise the Studio Projects line provides very brittle highs. I did a blind comparison w a C-1 and 416 and discovered the horrific reproduction of highs in the C-1 compared to the smooth and clean, if somewhat over-emphasized (by design, check out the 416's curve) of the 416. The 87AI sounds markedly different from the original 87 made by Neumann before Sennheiser took them over, and while I like even the AI version just fine, many engineers in commercial recording actually consider it a touch dark, if you can believe that. In no way do I hear overemphasized articulation in the 100, particularly compared to the 87 and 414. (By way of calibration, I find virtually all Rødes harsh sounding, some more than others.) And I am underwhelmed with the current run of "Telefunken" USA mics, but I have had an original Telefunken badged U47 in my own studio to compare with my L47, so I know what those can really sound like. Bottom line, I find this comparison of the Sony reveals it as enormously smooth and full-bodied, and I suspect it would perform better with just a couple more inches of distance between mouth and mic to clean up the low end a touch. And I agree that the low cut filter performs in a non-damaging way on your basic male voice.
I thought this was one of the best-sounding mics you've demo'd for electric guitar. Sounds monstrous, clear, easy-listening, and larger-than-life. Pick attack is not too grating either. That C100 sounds great. I do prefer the tone of the TLM103 but the C100 is incredibly detailed- possibly the most detailed microphone you have ever reviewed(?). It sounds fantastic and I really enjoyed it on the acoustic guitar. A little bit of EQ to lower the fret noise a little bit would make it sound awesome but I really enjoyed it. @@lionheartroar3104 I would buy it 😀 I have a deep voice, the 103 works good for my voice. This C-100 sounds sweetfor Bandrew type of voices, the little boost on the lows sounds superb, but for me would not work 😣
Hey Bandrew, if you ever get the chance do consider reviewing Brauner microphones. I have a Phantera and it blows microphones twice its price away. I like this Sony. I think it does have a smooth high, perhaps better than the TLM103. I wish you had done a "hiss" test by opening the gain instead of only comparing the self noise numbers.
Try this mic with a quality tube preamp, adds a tad of warmth and rounds the edges off. But it’s defiantly a smooth mic, nothing harsh about it. Would probably kill on drum overheads as well. It sounds better than the TLM103, just sounds like it picks up more frequencies.
Damn man, every time, and I mean EVERY time there's a mic I've never heard of that I wanna check out, google leads me here. Not complaining, it's just astounding to me that you've already been there.done that Do you have any idea how many of these tests you've done?
Bandrew, notwithstanding my pulling your chain about the Aston Element (which does sound good on your voice), this microphone really, really sounds great for you. The price point is steep, of course. The quality is no less than I would expect from Sony. (The Telefunken didn't sound much better than the Newer! And the AKG was a disappointment. Surprisingly, the Sony sounded better than the U87.)
The C100 is really great value for the price as far as higher end mics go the tech isnt even found in other similarly priced mics, great sound as well easily worth its price, i do think it can sound a tad hot up high and maybe a little more bassier than flat but its not too far off~
IMO It's hard to come close to the C800G but damn, the price point feels like a steal for the C100. The way the C800G handles the breath of vocals and air frequencies is amazing and dare I say untouchable. But damn, this does a really good job. I might have to grab this.. I really shouldn't but damn.
I've been debating whether to get this mic over the tlm103/49 or Soyuz Bomblet for a while. The c100's esses are honestly not as bad as I expected, pretty smooth and not nearly as brittle as the at2020 or c414 in my opinion. Still can't make up my mind though lmao!
Great slew of tests. TLM sounded best to my ears. Although the TF11 and U87ai also sounded great. The Sony sounded good too. The NT1 was similar but not quite as smooth, a tiny bit muddier.
Very informative video. But how can you do some critical listening while wearing those double veiled headphones. I mean you are surely not hearing any treble at all.
I'd strongly assume everything he's saying in the mic is coming back to his ears from them headphones. It's not like they're ear protectors they wear on building sites lol

Realmente bueno. Superó a todos, incluso al Neumann, en mi opinión.
Excelente review, saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I like this Sony. I think it does have a smooth high, perhaps better than the TLM103. I wish you had done a "hiss" test by opening the gain instead of only comparing the self noise numbers.
This one sounds so beautiful 😍
Great Review!
Sounds nice and crisp and clear on my pixel 4a Google "stereophonic" phone. I could understand your concerns about fatiguing after a certain point.
Sooo long waiting for this review, can you check on small diaphragm condenser mics? Love this review tho
Try this mic with a quality tube preamp, adds a tad of warmth and rounds the edges off. But it’s defiantly a smooth mic, nothing harsh about it. Would probably kill on drum overheads as well. It sounds better than the TLM103, just sounds like it picks up more frequencies.
Hearing the c100 back to back with the u87 is kinda close actually.
The Telefunken TF11 Large-diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone sounded really good .
Damn man, every time, and I mean EVERY time there's a mic I've never heard of that I wanna check out, google leads me here. Not complaining, it's just astounding to me that you've already been there.done that
Do you have any idea how many of these tests you've done?
Bandrew, notwithstanding my pulling your chain about the Aston Element (which does sound good on your voice), this microphone really, really sounds great for you. The price point is steep, of course. The quality is no less than I would expect from Sony. (The Telefunken didn't sound much better than the Newer! And the AKG was a disappointment. Surprisingly, the Sony sounded better than the U87.)
Incredibly articulate and those acoustics...Ayo!!!! A real spiritual (AND REASONABLY CHEAPER!!!) successor to the C-800G.
Going to try out the Black Lion Audio 2x2 Revolution? some friends been raving about there units
Microphone has almost DPA levels of non coloration on the off axis (at least until you get to the null zones obviously)
The C100 is really great value for the price as far as higher end mics go the tech isnt even found in other similarly priced mics, great sound as well easily worth its price, i do think it can sound a tad hot up high and maybe a little more bassier than flat but its not too far off~
I know this is like beating a dead horse, but... Sure would love to hear how the C-80 stacks up, especially given the price.
If I can afford one in the future I will consider that. Thank you very much for the suggestion.
@Podcastage will you do C80?
I wish you threw in a Sony C-80 to compare it to. Do you think there’d be a big difference between the two for recording acoustic guitar?
great review
IMO It's hard to come close to the C800G but damn, the price point feels like a steal for the C100. The way the C800G handles the breath of vocals and air frequencies is amazing and dare I say untouchable. But damn, this does a really good job. I might have to grab this.. I really shouldn't but damn.
Sounds dang good. If only we could compare it to the C800G.
But don't do that to your bank account.
Sounds great!
That riff was sick
Underrated mic fo rsure.
Nice review bro, you should also check out the Hyper X Solo Cast.
So with this or austrian audio oc18 which will you choose?
i'd love a direct comparison with the C-80 that has the same capsule but its costs like a 1k less
I don't currently have a C80 so I'm not able to do that, eventually I'd like to though.
Gorgeous carrying case
Only here to see the box throwing
Sounds great! BUT THAT LCT 840 THO?!😳👀
Great slew of tests. TLM sounded best to my ears. Although the TF11 and U87ai also sounded great. The Sony sounded good too. The NT1 was similar but not quite as smooth, a tiny bit muddier.
My fav on your voice u87 and c100
Very informative video. But how can you do some critical listening while wearing those double veiled headphones. I mean you are surely not hearing any treble at all.
I'd strongly assume everything he's saying in the mic is coming back to his ears from them headphones. It's not like they're ear protectors they wear on building sites lol
