Ive always struggled being a more masculine gymcel type, the majority of the lack of my success is due to lacking social skills on my part, however I always thought I was moderately to above average attractive. If you are already very masculine, it is harder to get the positive more harmonious facial qualities a pretty boy will naturally possess. Being a the soft boy doesn't really have any advantages with girls that are older than 13-17ish. Most girls around 18+ are typically attracted to chads and hypermasculine dudes. Clout and resources are the main equalisers anyway. Look at softboy celebrities like Justin Bieber, Taylor lautner, Jonas brothers etc. When they were teenagers, they were the hottest commodities on the market primarily for middleschool girls. Past 23, they were still below 5'9, retained their softboy look and the same girls that were swooning after them started getting turned off by them. They even made memes of justin, claiming that he looked like a lesbian 😆. This triggered him to significantly alter his looks with tattoos and some muscles. Now chads like Drake, Brad Pitt, Chris helmsworth, Michael B Jordan, Idris Elba, these guys have women ( early 20s and up) still swooning, some of them are in their 50s.

There are two types of sexual selection:
1. Intra-sexual in which member of one sex usually males compete/fight for the right to mate;
2. Inter-sexual in which members of one sex usually females chose members of the opposite sex to mate with;
Human sexual dimorphism with males being larger and stronger than females suggests that our species went through 1.
Note that intra-sexual selection does not involve female choice. This creates a confusion in some people who expect that high in sexual dimorphism i.e. hypermasculine looks is supposed to be also high in attractiveness for the opposite sex but in reality that's not the case.
Men judge other men on their fighting abilities. Women don't.
Human females like many other females in the animal kingdom when given the choice go for beauty and physical characteristics that indicate good genes, fitness and health. This is very deeply biologically ingrained.
That choice can often be skewed by other factors such as the need for provision and protection but remove/reduce those needs and then you'll see what the real preferences are. And since beauty has always been a privilege for the rich that's the reason why beauty is now more popular in the West and not so popular in countries in which people are trying to survive day to day. The richer a society gets the more looks and aesthetics matter more.
And no, pretty boys didn't appear just now. Johnny Depp was popular 30 years ago and young Leonardo DiCaprio was more softer looking than many of the soft boys today and he was and continues to be extremely popular with women of all ages.
Intrasexual and intersexual selection does correlate and add to each other. You mentioned genetic qualities. Being a good warrior/hunter requires it all. Which woman wants her sons to be losers? They all want strong male offspring as in next generation even without the female choice they can still spread their genes.
Strong offspring doesn't necessarily mean being physically stronger. Three points:
1. Having a good immune system and being able to survive against diseases which have always been a major killer and other environmental factors is very important. And beauty is a very strong indicator of those qualities.
2. A female gorilla is stronger than even the strongest human male. But who dominates the planet gorillas or humans? Our species have been consistently losing raw physical strength and relying on the use of intelligence and tools for survival.
3. Women evolved concealed ovulation which allowed them to mate with males they want to and promoted the rise of monogamous relationships. And perhaps this explains our evolution in point number 2.
