I became pregnant at 19 (now 20) and my partner was 23 (now 24) but it was perfect for us. We are both still studying from home as the online classes during the pandemic were perfect for us, we both aren’t into clubbing, just moved into an apartment and my partner works part time. While it is overwhelming sometimes, we are comfortable with our lives and I will be getting my undergraduates degree in July which will make things a whole lot more stress free for us 🥰

I get the whole pressure off combining kids with a career for man and women. I’m just finishing my LLM degree, turning 29 soon, but for me the book Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg really helped explaining how women should not at the start of their career step back because there is a possibility that they might get pregnant in a couple of years. Faced with such a decision it might be better to lean in and want more. So later on you are better equipped to support your child, and might even be in a higher position that allows a more flexible approach to work after having kids. Most importantly everyone is allowed to decide when they feel ready to have children or if they even want children. All these things don’t define you. You are valuable on your own no matter what others have or don’t have. As Carys always says YOU ARE ENOUGH 💜

I would defo recommend harvesting colustrum or hand expressing before birth. Sometimes if you have to have an emergency c sec (like i did). The hormones to produce milk doesnt always kick in as quickly. So for those who have c sections they can find breast feeding hard and sresssful. But because inhand expressed. My milk came in early on day two!! And i have been breast feeding for 5 weeks now exclusively. Also if they dont latch well to start with (which is pretty common!) You can hand express in the first few days abd syrienge feed the baby whilst also encouraging milk flow via the hand expression. Also i didnt leak at all in my whole pregnancy and have so much milk! 🙈🙈

Hi, I’m a breastfeeding peer supporter so just wanted to reply to your question about harvesting colostrum. Firstly, it isn’t something that you NEED to do, in order to have a successful breastfeeding journey. However, if you feel able, it is always a good idea. You’re correct that nipple stimulation carries a risk of inducing labour, therefore it isn’t advised to start until 37 weeks. From then on, you can hand express (I wouldn’t recommend using a pump as expressing before your baby is 6 weeks old can cause oversupply which can be very uncomfortable, cause latch issues, engorgement and mastitis. So to hand express, you can put your hand on your breast in a ‘c’ shape around the areola (not just the nipple) and gently massage towards the nipple. Any colostrum that comes out you can get directly off the nipple using sterile 1ml syringes with caps (you can order these online or ask your midwife). Don’t expect loads, you may ‘only’ get 0.1mls at a time - that’s great! Baby’s tummy is so tiny at the time of birth. You can then freeze these syringes (label them with the date) and use them post birth. They are great for if you are having any troubles with latching baby on but can also be used for any skin issues such as nappy rash, conjunctivitis, eczema etc. It’s basically the stuff of magic!

CARYS, get a Hakka silicone pump from Amazon - it’s an absolute must have. (It naturally collects milk from the opposite breast when you’re feeding/pumping). Works AMAZINGLY.

After 7 years of breastfeeding, my boobs have never gone down in size. I went from a 38FF before my first pregnancy, went up to a 40J and they never changed during my second pregnancy. They are now at a 42K and have stayed this size for over 3 years. It can make some womens boobs 'saggy' but not all women experience that.

Colostrum harvesting was a real saviour for us. I had a completely low risk pregnancy but due to complications towards the end of labour baby ended up on NICU. Whilst there they gave her the colostrum I had harvested just in case I needed it. It meant that no formula was needed and our breastfeeding journey was not interrupted.
From memory I think you can start from 37 weeks (no earlier as it may induce labour), you have to express by hand as it’s only small amounts that would get lost in a pump and you collect in syringes which you then pop in the freezer. Do ask your midwife about it, mine was great and even supplied me with loads of syringes! Good luck 😄
Also loving watching your pregnancy journey, my little one is 5 months and you are already making me excited for our next... I miss my bump!

Also, in terms of the harvesting colostrum - my mum's job is infant feeding support and she talks mothers through breast feeding/bottle feeding up until introducing solid foods. She said you're only supposed to start harvesting your colostrum after 37 weeks but it's absolutely the best thing you can be doing, it's packed full of nutrients for the baby and in the first few days after the baby is born, before your milk comes in, they will only be getting colostrum off you. x

Coming from a mama that has breastfed for 2 years! Harvesting colostrum can be done from 37/38 weeks as your then full term. It can be done by hand expressing or pumping. If hand expressing you can buy thin syringes to catch it and store them in a sandwich bag labelled with the date and time expressed then stored in the freezer until going in to have baby. If pumping then store in breast milk storage bags and store the same way, also date and time expressed. Hope this helps :) x

They say not to start harvesting colostrum until 36w so not to risk early labour. You just need to hand express (it's not recommended to pump until baby is 6w old), you won't get a lot at first but keep doing it and you will get more. Store in syringes and freeze with the date on it. I would highly recommend it! My milk didn't come in till day 5 so the colostrum I had really helped with making sure baby was getting calories and nutrition whilst also nursing on demand to increase my supply. Its such a handy thing to have with you, take a few that aren't frozen closer to the due date as the hospital can keep it in their fridge incase it's needed xx

Student midwife here! In regards to harvesting colostrum - you can harvest from 38weeks usually! Definitely speak to your midwife! You don’t need to “pump it out” as you’ll only literally get tiny drops! Just hand express into a sterile cup or syringe and freeze! X

@@steff6682 if it’s something we shouldn’t be doing then I don’t think the midwives would recommend it. The colostrum comes in before your milk so it would be gone by the time you were ready to start feeding that’s why they say to harvest it as it. It’s not something that has to be done and all depends on if you can anyway as not everyone may be able to or even want to

Hi Carys - just thought I'd add r.e the colostrum: whilst you can't try to express colostrum prior to 36 weeks (due to nipple simulation potentially making your uterus contract), if your nipples are leaking to an amount that you could collect into a sterile container you can definitely collect it and freeze! You would hold the container under the nipple, collect it into there and then use the special syringes to suck it up and freeze. Colostrum is liquid gold because it has higher volumes of fat and antibodies. It can be useful on things like eczema, if baby gets a cold etc. Or if baby has to go into NICU for a bit when born, it can be useful to have a stash of it ready to use. Hope this helps! Xx

Most ppl I know had kids ur ages or younger, I feel looked down on bc I am 39 with an8 and 6 year old. lol had my oldest right b4 I turned 31, he’s almost 9 now and I feel like ppl think I waited too late (although ppl don’t know the struggle, I was trying all thru my 20’s) I am very happy with my children now. I think no matter when u choose, or ur body chooses for u to have children just enjoy it bc u can never please everyone!! Someone will always have something to say no matter what. That chat at the start is so true. I don’t have children yet, and I’m the same age as you guys. However, Both my partner and myself have gone to uni and are now starting our first years in graduate jobs. Therefore, we have a little while before it would be reasonable! I know, without a doubt, that we would’ve been married and had kids by now HAD we selected a career path that might’ve not needed uni or had flexibility of working from home....

Hi Carys, I expressed my colostrum from 36 weeks pregnant - as you said it can induce early labour so shouldn’t be done earlier. If your breasts are actually leaking without you hand expressing though you could catch the colostrum and freeze it. I personally was only able to express a few drops a day but had a decent amount to take to hospital when I gave birth and it was so good as I had a traumatic birth so it took some time for my milk to come in. My daughter also spent some time in special care. I believe expressing colostrum really helped my breastfeeding journey - 4 months in and feeding is going really well!

I’ve had 2 babies, breastfed my first until she was 2 and a half, I then dried up due to being pregnant with my second, she’s 12 weeks now and I’m successfully breastfeeding her again, I didn’t get out any colostrum for either babies beforehand I just waited until they was born, so you don’t have to, it’s literally up to you, read into it and see what you would rather do☺️ Not long left now eeeee I cannot wait to see baby girl 😍

Colostrum is a thick form of milk that is produced, it is the bit of the breast milk that contains the most nutrition! It is developed from around 16 weeks pregnant which is why your having this symptom so early! x

Just to give you a bit of hope that you won’t be sick during labour haha... My first pregnancy with my girl I was sick the whole way through the pregnancy, literally eat anything be sick straight after 🙈 during the labour I was fine and did not throw up haha!! I only had gas and air as well. Also I now have two boys as well and wasn’t sick at all during those pregnancy’s so dont let the sickness put you off having more baby’s in the future 💕

They don’t necessarily double in size,
I’ve had three babies and breastfed them all, yes they can become quite solid when your milk first comes in but that’s just an initial milk coming in thing, after a week or so of feeding baby will have started to regulate abit of a pattern, so they don’t stay full.. they don’t always have that solid feeling, it’s good to think of them like rivers not lakes.. they’re always filling and always being emptied, there’s a constant flow, they aren’t full of all the milk baby will ever need and then suddenly empty and be lifeless sacks 🙈 I’m glad you’re not bothered anyway!! But it’s not quite as bizarre as some people say
Deffo get the snacks/drinks/essentials ready for cluster feeding, enjoy that baby smell and don’t worry about any chores ♥️
The worst part of having kids is realising how quickly time really flies, enjoy as much as you guys can (despite the sleeplessness some nights, it’s definitely not all bad 💖

I’m not sure if it’s the same for Wales but for England, there’s a rule where households with a baby under 1 (I think) can bubble with another household even under the strictest restrictions for support x

@@bethneal9292 it's for people who have to go out to work and require childcare to do that. They dont. It's the misunderstanding of these rules which is why the virus is spreading.

      @bethneal9292 3 года назад

@@bryonyellis6079 the rule I was referring to is explained here www.gov.uk/guidance/making-a-support-bubble-with-another-household
Specifically, one of the terms under which you can form a support bubble is ‘your household includes a child who is under the age of one or was under that age on 2 December 2020’.
People who do this are following government guidance. It is not fair that you blame them for the current climate.

it’s up to the couple when they wish to have children. The older a woman gets the harder it is to get pregnant. If you run into infertility problems that can take several years to journey through as well. Also if you have them young then you will be able to enjoy your grandchildren at a younger age and be more involved in their lives. As a couple who experienced problems we eventually adopted and believe me, having teenagers when you are in peri menopause is not fun!

So glad you chose Slim Chickens! They were founded just down the road from me in Fayetteville, Arkansas and their food is actually pretty authentic casual Southern food. Also, thank you for the discussion about young parents. My husband and I are 24 and 25 and we get the opposite message here in the South, that we are so old and should have had kids years ago. But we both finished college and enjoyed just being married and are just now trying to get pregnant 😁 We all arrive there on our own paths. 💕

You can harvest colustrum from 37 weeks, best thing I ever did as my baby really needed it when born even though I breastfed immediately due to her very low blood sugars! It's excellent just to have as a back up if you have any issues! Also stretch marks are genetic.....I oiled every day and still got them so it's another thing us women should embrace!!! 🙌🙌

Throwing up during labour is usually because of medications like James said, but also shock. And straight after birth it’s likely too, as the hormones have dropped straight after the placenta is delivered, so expect that too to prepare yourself xx

My skin stretched so much my stretch marks bled. I was hugggge. Had 4 kilo babies. Hope everything’s going well xxx
