- I got a Federal Signal Vibratone 350 (Series A1, also widely known as the Simplex 4040) to play music! It's just as simple as using DC instead of AC, and then rapidly switching the current on and off. Or, specifically, oscillating it at a specific frequency.

Ah, a Vibratone 350! So THAT's what this thing is! My grandparents' church had one as a fire alarm years ago, which was manually activated by an ordinary light switch. One Sunday morning when I was 5-years-old, I was helping get things ready for services by turning on all the lights and accidently turned it on (the switch for the Vibratone was right next to several other identical light switches). Scared the crap out of me! It was later removed and I've always wondered what it was ever since.
