Well, to the people asking, there is NOT a whole season in 2D of Houseki no Kuni, this here it's a manga promotional video and, probably, all what we are gonna get in 2D. I would also like to ask people to put a "spoiler warning" on any manga-only stuff, since I (and I imagine a lot of people) haven't read it yet or are waiting for a second season, thanks for your understanding ^^ Also, since this got WAY more views than I could have possibly expected, I'm gonna shamelessly drop a link to a friend's channel, he makes amazing music, so go give him some love: ruclips.net/channel/UCraeiBK_FW8GWuBebMNYmgwfeatured Thanks u all for passing by ^^
It's because it looks like crap man. Any shiney or reflective or crystal piece looks like crap on the 2d side. The backgrounds don't look as good The hand drawn allows the characters to be drawn more edgy and stylized but it don't think it suits this show where all the characters basically look the same(minus the hair colour).
I love the 2-D one but at the same time I could understand why they didn’t take that route since making the anime would cost a serious amount especially with how the hair refracts and doing all those frames. The Cg is able to make a shortcut with that but the Anime still has 2-D shots though very short if you pay attention closely you notice them.
I disagree. The 2D expressions are not better than the 3D ones. The only difference I see is that 2D facial expressions are more exaggerated and the same goes for the angles, the body and body movement, the poses, which to me is not better to convey emotions nor character but to dramatize/ exaggerate them. Imho the 3D version seems more serious to the dangers. If it were a 2D adaptation I'm sure it could not make me feel the harsh reality to live with few other gem-people in a post apocaliptic planet being hunted and fragile, slowly taking away the innocence but without taking away the beauty and elegance, like the 3D version does. In the 3D adaptation they used some 2D clips I think, for the sake of detail and emotion a few times, but it was not like in this video which I found a bit grotesque actually.
While the 2D is fantastic, it lacks the ability to give weight to the gems. Considering how many times the gems get shattered in this series, it’s absolutely ESSENTIAL to give a sense of weight alongside the sound design. 2D is definitely able to have more fun with how the characters move and how they express themselves, but it lacks the depth that 3D is able to create so well. I’m usually against 3D anime, they never look right to me, but Houseki no Kuni was amazing and I hope they continue it since the manga gets much more intense in terms of story. :)
It’s. Normally the opposite. 3d is normally the one that lacks impact weight then 2d. That’s why anime in the 90s feel so “heavy” for lack of a better word
I don't think you phrased that right at all. While what you said was right, in that the 2d lacks weight while 3d doesn't in this animation, it's not mutually exclusive at all. The only reason why the 2d lacks weight is that the designs and style is far too difficult to animate, thus the animation got dumped down and feels weaker because of it. While with 3d, a lot of the special effects like gem shining and other stuff moving can be easily repeated.
I think making the hair more flowey like in the 2D is more beautiful than in the 3D version of the OP. The intention of the artists though, might've been to make a fully CGI anime, and I can understand that desire to do so. They'd be putting in far more effort into something that they may have been able to get the same pay back in monetary gains regardless... sorta...? Well, maybe not actually... All this to say, comparing the two mediums is a matter of preference as far as I know, and if anything is out there that suggests objectively that there's a reason why people prefer 2D over 3D I'd like to know the specifics, because I'm burning to know more. Afterall, 2D and 3D look completely different at this stage, and the only way to bridge the gap I feel, is to somehow get rid of stuff we find jarring about the 3D anime look in anime specifically, and get something closer to, well, Love Lives recent CGI, although again, the goals of the creators may not have been to make something cute, which... well, I'm open to more possibilities, I just think speculating is more work than it's worth sometimes if I can just do the research... although speculating does bring more questions to mind that I'd know to ask because I felt confident enough to speculate out loud... hmm...

With all the shines and these stuff it would had to be a nightmare for the animators to animate it into 12 full episodes.I pretty understand why they decided to use CGI instead of 2D. Fun fact, Houseki no Kuni and Beastars are the only anime series that are full CGI that I'm able to watch without ripping my eyes out. And that's great
Both... are equally beautiful. The 2D really emphasized the shining of gems through art, making them look so mystical. The 3D on the other hand showed off the gems reflections and smoothness.
Because the 2D version was acting as a teaser, with scenes individually drawn. It looks a lot cleaner with a better focus on artistic framing and contrast. But the 3D is cut from larger scenes that have to focus on showing the story than highlighting it. So it's a bit harder to compare it. But from what i've seen, it would of been hella interesting to see that art style animated and it reminds me of Flip Flappers, but the hair would of been an eye sore. Especially Diamond's. But at the same time, if the 3D was frame better in the dramatic stills shown here. As-- 0:40 -- is, with a larger contrast. It would improve the art a lot in this specific comparison. With that said, a scene not shown here. Diamond's battle with the cloud doggo is perfect as it is for me. I can't imagine a way that 2D can match with the suspense and tension made from a long continuous shot with minimal cuts. Trying to recreate that scene in 2D would of blown a hole in the budget.
It's exactly as you said, I did think about editing in some of those effects, like leaving the white filter at 0:29, but it would have killed the whole point of a comparison in a sense so, for good or bad I didn't. And yeah, the Diamond scene though doable would have been a problem, we probably would have ended with a more normal action scene and a bunch of cuts. Also, I kinda wish we had some Master scenes on the PV, it's such a shame T.T
It does! though for now I have only seen some panels of it, I'm still waiting for they to confirm or not a second season before reading it, anyway, something similar happens to Dorohedoro, where the 3D anime has a more "rounded" style compared to the manga, but the 2D OVA looks more like it.
@@ygres158 I don't think there will be a new season anytime soon. The animation studio is the same as beastars and this one has a new season confirmed. What is happening now in the manga is impressive so I hope they will adapt it eventually
I love how expressive and amazing the art is for the 2D, but the way they expressed the space and scenarios with the camera/angle-work with 3D is also amazing. 3D will always have a place in my heart, but the 2D work really brings out the flavor of the manga. The 3D is a masterpiece of anime, while 2D is a ode to the manga. Both are lovely.
3D definitely gives the characters more life since they look more weighted. 2D looks good too, but the amount of work they put in to make the crystals look lustrous is very difficult and even then it doesn't look consistent sometimes. They both have their own charms, but I definitely love the 3D one better.
the 2D is GREAT in this but to be honest I appreciate way more the leaps in 3D animation that Houseki No Kuni did, it seriously is the best example of good use of 3D animation
just remember that ya'll cant compare the quality entirely, the shorter the scene is, the less you gain out of 3D. with these very short 2D scenes you can work a lot with the drawings to approximate everything you can do with 3D, but the true worth of 3D comes out across a whole episode when it establishes a very tangible physical space across many scenes and scenarios and it becomes impossible to render all the angles and lighting physics by hand in a consistent way. kyoani are talented, of course the 2D looks good, too
This is one of the rare cases in which I wouldn’t complain if it was the other way round, and I don’t complain that it ended up being CGI. The 2D one looks gorgeous and I’d certainly like to see it, But I’m also more than content and satisfied with the experimentally beautiful 3D they gave us. I think I’m happier that the anime ended up being CGI instead of hand-drawn? Not because it’s stylistically superior but because it showed us that CGI anime can work too. We really needed an anime like this to change our prespective on CGI anime.
I remember watching the 2D manga PV right when it came out, but I didn't quite know what it was for. Always thought it was special and that I wanted to watch it. And that was that. Several years later I remembered it and tried to find it. After som failed attempt I gave up. Then some time I chanced upon the manga and read it. Then fast forward bit more and an anime was announced which I was over the moon for. Despite being 3D the visual is amazing. The OST is amazing. Phos voice acting is amazing. Watching the series gets known from something so obscure and rising in rating in real time was something very special. This entire series is special.
I’ve never seen such a pleasant section of “I appreciate both 3D and 2D at the same time and think they work better for different reasons.” It goes to show how much care and time was put into the animation for both and that’s lovely.
And to be honest, im actually happy that the anime didn't copy the manga artsyle. Im perfectly fine with adaptations that look and feel exactly like the source, but i always prefer adaptation that bring something new to the table.
@@iswallowappleseeds927 yeh sure but with the way HNK is in the manga where imagery and framing matter so much I personally dont think it applies as much
Might be a bias, but I like 3d more cause it looks more... Gem-ish? Idk how to explain it... I think it's cause I watched the anime before I started reading the Manga.
No you're right, 3d allows them to have their hair and inside look like real stones with translucency and refraction, plus since the model is in 3d their proportions always stay the same, which take off some softness to their body. Also 3d that tries to imitate 2d mostly fail because the shadow and lighting will always look perfectly calculated instead of esthetically chosen, which is perfect here since it give off an artificial feeling instead of a smooth, natural one. 3d also allows them to break them and have the damaged parts keep the same shape through action, the breaking is probably also simulated which looks really good and realistic. It wouldn't be the case with 2d. 3d was a perfect choice for gems. But you can see it struggling with fleshed creatures, it doesn't look as good with the ocean queen.
Wow it's hard to understate how much more personality and style the 2d animation has. Now that being said, having watched the show, I think the animators really do take full advantage of the specific pros of 3d (dynamic camera angles in action, advanced lighting effects especially with the gem hair, etc.). Either option has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.
2d is very close to the manga in style but 3d makes it look LIKE LIVING GEMS, true *stones, minerals and metals*, out of place in an "organic world" thats what i love of HnK... time to rewatch it again
But imo, it lacks the feeling of the gems actually being gems. And also the storyboarding and the cinematography the 3d anime provided. But i can't really compare a 2 minute long film to a 12 episode anime.
Houseki no Kuni is a rare piece of art that actually makes CGI look good in an anime. The environment, the looks of the gems, lightings and air. Its just a whole master piece with CGI.
The hair animation alone is what makes 3d better really. Plus, them being gems is one of the distinct/important features of this anime and the 2d just falls short in portraying that when compared to the 3d.
both the 2d and 3d are so amazing, visually the 2d gives you more but the 3d is so amazing and impressive with the lighting and animation, gosh I love them both, and a very big thank you to the uploader for making this wonderful comparison 🥰💛
god i feel like the 2d is more beautiful and brings out more of what the original manga intended to bring us, but the 3d is such an accomplishment in anime XP
Something I think people aren't getting is that theres a very large difference between a 1 minuete promo and a 12 episode anime. The charcters def emote more in the former, but thats because once model sheets are made you only have to follow it for a minute of animation.
I like the 2D version because I think the artstyle is similar to the manga's and I absolutely adore it. But I must say the 3D version brought out the most in this show and made it a masterpiece.
Yeah, it would cost a ton to animate in purely 2D and I think the 3D style captures the gem texture better without relying too heavily on unnecessary and distracting details like the sparkles and light reflection on the clothing. All in all I'm glad they went the 3D style
I loved the use of 3d since it gave the characters a bit of an uncanny effect that really helped to set the mood, I think in the end they made the right choice.
3d just as hard if can be harder Characters need to be modeled , then rigged , skin weighted Need uv it so u can texture it . Animating can be easier as it easier to fix things that's if the rig isn't the problem
Yeah, you can tell it looks mainly amazing because of less movement in most of the shots with scenes literally just ripped from the manga. Wouldn't have the time to be animated that well with traditional 2D and hold up that well. Not to mention because the characters are all gemstones the kind of stiffness to the 3D is appropriate. Hell, in some of the 3D shots you can't even tell if it's 3D or not with a shot by shot comparison. Looks more like a different artstyle more then different tools all together.
The 2d looks great but honestly this is the best fully 3d adaptation in anime, I have to give respect. Especially to those insane tracking camera action shots
To me the 2d looks as the 3D does but with more sparkles and extraneous effects, the excessive effects makes the 2D a bit blinding and 3d more appealing as a result on top of the 3D paying closer homage to the world and the physics of crystal people
Given the nature of the story and the characters I think the features of cgi like the solid looking hair that refracts light and the more accurate reflection of light from broken parts helped make them seem more like humanoid gemstones rather than just humans that have gemstone colored hair. The 3d fighting scenes were gorgeous as well. Dying for a second season, the anime was gorgeous and so immersive
In the 2D version the designs of the characters are more defined and are more similar to Manga, but the 3D gives them "Volume" and for some effects, [such as the butterflies of Phos or the sparkles of his gem body], giving a much better than 2D version. And having said that I will have to start looking for the series because I did not know of its existence and 3D is not badly implemented XD

Fun fact, Houseki no Kuni and Beastars are the only anime series that are full CGI that I'm able to watch without ripping my eyes out. And that's great
Both are amazing in their own ways!
honestly, first time an anime has looked better in 3D than 2D, i think the 3D very cleverly done in this show
やっぱ、「合ってる」と思うのは手描きアニメの方だよな……死ぬほど大変になるのは分かってるけど、漫画での“絵の揺らぎ”的なものも表現できるし
Both... are equally beautiful.
The 2D really emphasized the shining of gems through art, making them look so mystical.
The 3D on the other hand showed off the gems reflections and smoothness.
3Dのアニメって見慣れてないからか抵抗あったけどこれは本当に良い作品だった。3Dが宝石の国の魅力を引き出してくれたんだと思う。もちろん2Dも見てみたい😂
The 2d is so aesthetically pleasing, giving it that flexible-weak and lively look similar to the manga. I wish we had a pilot episode just in 2d
I think the 2D version look more similar to the manga
It does! though for now I have only seen some panels of it, I'm still waiting for they to confirm or not a second season before reading it, anyway, something similar happens to Dorohedoro, where the 3D anime has a more "rounded" style compared to the manga, but the 2D OVA looks more like it.
@@ygres158 I don't think there will be a new season anytime soon. The animation studio is the same as beastars and this one has a new season confirmed. What is happening now in the manga is impressive so I hope they will adapt it eventually
@@antoniomoreno4986 what is happening now in the manga is depressing* xDDDDd
yeah, in the manga their noses look like they could pierce through the lunarians
@@jazr9997 haha demi human go brrr
I love how expressive and amazing the art is for the 2D, but the way they expressed the space and scenarios with the camera/angle-work with 3D is also amazing.
3D will always have a place in my heart, but the 2D work really brings out the flavor of the manga.
The 3D is a masterpiece of anime, while 2D is a ode to the manga.
Both are lovely.
The one on the left is the spitting image of the manga, but the one on the right has it's own personality and I like the differentiation to be honest.
3D definitely gives the characters more life since they look more weighted. 2D looks good too, but the amount of work they put in to make the crystals look lustrous is very difficult and even then it doesn't look consistent sometimes. They both have their own charms, but I definitely love the 3D one better.
the 2D is GREAT in this but to be honest I appreciate way more the leaps in 3D animation that Houseki No Kuni did, it seriously is the best example of good use of 3D animation
just remember that ya'll cant compare the quality entirely, the shorter the scene is, the less you gain out of 3D. with these very short 2D scenes you can work a lot with the drawings to approximate everything you can do with 3D, but the true worth of 3D comes out across a whole episode when it establishes a very tangible physical space across many scenes and scenarios and it becomes impossible to render all the angles and lighting physics by hand in a consistent way. kyoani are talented, of course the 2D looks good, too
3d kinda just fits this anime more than 2d but I ain’t complaining-
絶対に労力凄いだろうけど未だに2D見てみたくて見に来ちゃう
This is one of the rare cases in which I wouldn’t complain if it was the other way round, and I don’t complain that it ended up being CGI.
The 2D one looks gorgeous and I’d certainly like to see it,
But I’m also more than content and satisfied with the experimentally beautiful 3D they gave us.
I feel like 3D is more iconic and the grass just looks so shiny
I think they're both amazing but i feel like the 3D one gives life to the characters.
I’ve never seen such a pleasant section of “I appreciate both 3D and 2D at the same time and think they work better for different reasons.” It goes to show how much care and time was put into the animation for both and that’s lovely.
This anime deserves a season 2 , it's so underrated!
1:25 says it. 2D for me!
2D version - good anime, remembered for one year
3D version - great anime, remembered for years
honestly I prefer the framing and over all look to the 2D version, the style is much closer to the manga and I just really like the aesthetic
And to be honest, im actually happy that the anime didn't copy the manga artsyle.
Im perfectly fine with adaptations that look and feel exactly like the source, but i always prefer adaptation that bring something new to the table.
@@iswallowappleseeds927 yeh sure but with the way HNK is in the manga where imagery and framing matter so much I personally dont think it applies as much
Thank you so much for syncing this so nicely!!
^^
the mix between CGI and 2D animation perfectly fits the show.
i want season 2 so bad i hope it stays 3D
Even if the show was in 2d it still would have looked amazing, but the 3d work is just sooo incredible!
CG done right
I think both styles have their strengths and weaknesses and I love them for it
Both have that unique beauty of both styles I adore
2d is very close to the manga in style
but 3d makes it look LIKE LIVING GEMS, true *stones, minerals and metals*, out of place in an "organic world"
thats what i love of HnK...
time to rewatch it again
gotta love this aspect ratio
the 2D is much more emotional and expressive than the 3D
But imo, it lacks the feeling of the gems actually being gems. And also the storyboarding and the cinematography the 3d anime provided. But i can't really compare a 2 minute long film to a 12 episode anime.
Houseki no Kuni is a rare piece of art that actually makes CGI look good in an anime. The environment, the looks of the gems, lightings and air. Its just a whole master piece with CGI.
I like the character styles in 2d more
The hair animation alone is what makes 3d better really.
They truly shine like gems in the 2d version
But the hair doesn't feel like a gem in the 2d version, it just feels like jelly placed on top of someone's head.
Gracias, necesitaba la comparación de esta hermosa joya!
Honestly I'm glad they went with 3d... They pulled it off so well
Yeah, it would cost a ton to animate in purely 2D and I think the 3D style captures the gem texture better without relying too heavily on unnecessary and distracting details like the sparkles and light reflection on the clothing. All in all I'm glad they went the 3D style
I love the 3D because that is like is right
It still amazes me with how well they did the 3D. Houseki no Kuni did 3D anime some justice.
Only a PV can have this much quality in hand-drawn animation. I can only imagine what would have been if HnK had been a 2D anime.
I loved the use of 3d since it gave the characters a bit of an uncanny effect that really helped to set the mood, I think in the end they made the right choice.
I really like the 2D, a lot of work goes into makeing it so I do understand why they went 3D especially being a series and all that, it is fitting.
3d just as hard if can be harder
Characters need to be modeled , then rigged , skin weighted
Need uv it so u can texture it .
Animating can be easier as it easier to fix things that's if the rig isn't the problem
Господи, это выглядит и так и так шедеврально. Куда ещё то?
Feel like 2D is too close to normal anime trope expressions and the 3D just fit so well so I'm glad they did 3D
Both look beautifully done
While the 2d looks amazing, I don’t think the show would of been the same if it wasn’t in 3D
Looks more like a different artstyle more then different tools all together.
amazing
I like 2D and 3D.
Phos 2D and 3D at 1:00 are so beautiful!
Both are just beautiful.
3D peaking 2D is something you don't see everyday......2D is good, but 3D surpasses it in any way possible (in this anime)
waaaah the 2d is so good for emotions and glitter !! wish it was both like maybe 3d for more complex stuff
