Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we are at the Great British Car Journey in Derbyshire and we have access to the museum as well as the Drivedadscar.com experience. This 1972 Ford Granada Mark I 2.5 GXL Automatic is one of the cars which are part of the experience, and so brace yourself for some cones in a slalom (again), following in the footsteps of Steph from idriveaclassic (yet again), references to The Sweeney, incorrect information about vinyl seating and generally little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

"We're The Sweeney, son, and we haven't had any dinner. You've kept us waiting, so unless you want a kicking you tell us where those photographs are."
From the very first episode, "Ringer", broadcast on 2nd January 1975 and co-starring Brian Blessed, from memory...
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes, Brian Blessed played Frank Kemble.
@@MGBetts1 , good to see that my memory is working properly for once!
Happy Anniversary Mr Lloyd sir. A lovely car I must say.
I have been looking forward to trying this for a while! Thank you ever so much indeed for your kind wishes.
I always found it amusing that for a while, Vauxhall's direct competitor to the Granada was the Carlton, which ended up being Granada TV's main rival on ITV...
There was an Anglia TV as well, although probably just as well there was never an Austin Tyne Tees 😂
Yes, we do very much enjoy the old ITV franchises on this channel! My favourites were probably ABC Television and Thames (which followed directly on from one another).
Happy anniversary!
I've mentioned this a dozen times already on this and other channels: my late parents owned a diamond white 1976 R reg Granada 2000 L between 1980 and 1985. I was still in single figures age wise at the time. I later deduced (from a 1976 Ford brochure I bought) that the first owner specced the L up quite a lot externally to look like a GL. It had the optional vinyl roof, chrome wheel rim embellishers and fog lights. Inside it was bog standard L: black cloth seats, no rev counter, 4 speed manual. It had front seat head restraints that this early model lacks. The clock was repositioned behind the gearbox and was oval shaped.
Yes, this was in the days when Ford gave you a massive options list and choice of trims on a car like a Granada. They really were the masters of marketing from the 1970s through to the early 2000s. Very strange choice not to buy a GL, but to option up a 2.0 L...
Congratulations on the first five years Sir. 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very much indeed, sir!
You would make a good Sweeney driver Mr Lloyd. I drove the 3 litre version, in white with black upholstery, after managing to join Traffic Division in 1975. I distinctly remember the large head rests which blocked the view to the rear and impaired all round vision. In their day , they were relatively large cars. The Triumph 2.5PI was more fun to drive.
I don't think that I would have the skill for it, sir, but thank you ever so much indeed all the same! Yes, the police did use a lot of these back in the day, didn't they? I would love to try a Triumph 2.5 PI.
Congratulations on 5 years Mr Lloyd. I've been here for about 4 1/2 of them . Wonderful car , lacking in outside mirrors ! I keep saying it but i really must get to The Great British Car Journey.
Sir, you must be one of the longest standing channel viewers! Things were very different in March 2019.... By all means, go to the museum and have a go in this car!
One of the best rear ends in the business, especially when stuck on the back of the 3.0 Coupe.
We do like Granada Coupés on this channel very much...
Many congratulations on the 5 year milestone. It's a fantastic channel sir. What a fitting car for to mark such a grand occasion. Being a huge fan of The Sweeney myself, I like the car very much. The GBCJ, it is a fantastic venue, I just wished I lived closer to it! But will certainly be revisiting it again in 2024 most likely.
Yes sir, it is 180 miles from where I live, so I know what you mean! Mr Coleman may have had some influence in what we chose for the anniversary, but that is not necessarily a bad thing at all. Maybe you can have a go in it yourself when you visit?
happy 5 year aniversary to you brill
Did you enjoy the video, sir!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting yes very old! granada.
@@classics144sportscarschannel , one of the very first!
Congratulations, MR. Lloyd, fantastic review what a beautiful car indeed.
I had been looking forward to it for a really, really long time, sir.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
That's brilliant and I hope you enjoy it. I bet MR Coleman was impressed with it, too.
@@paulie-Gualtieri. , he was just pleased that I picked this one out of the other five to be the Five Year Anniversary special, sir!
🎉 Congratulations, sir, on the channel's fifth anniversary! 🍻
Hope you enjoyed the video, sir!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Indeed I did, sir! Your impromptu "Shut it!" put me in mind of a young Dennis Waterman!
@@TPerry2828 , we aim to please, sir!
Get your trousers on, Mr Lloyd. You're nicked!
From "Regan", the pilot for The Sweeney, sir!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I was tempted to say Broadsword calling Danny Boy, but they didn't have Granadas in 1944 :D
Indeed not, sir!
Another sweeney fan and granada fan. Grew up around battersea and vauxhall so know the locations very well
Yes, that old Nine Elms Railway Depot used to turn up in absolutely everything, didn't it? Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting!
Congratulations on your 5 years Joseph lovely Mk1 Granada 😎
Thank you ever so much indeed, Neil! Lots more to come from this trip to the Great British Car Journey earlier this week!
This is a Granada GXL and not the cheaper Consul, and there is not even a rear armrest that was standard in the Austin Morris 1800.There was also a fastback coupe, and many Granadas were built as funeral cars, limousines and hearses.
Yes, if you have a look in the video description, you will see a link to an event I attended in 2021 which had a display of some very nice Mark I and Mark II Granadas indeed. The Coupés are lovely, and one of the rarest Mark I Granadas is the Coupé based limousine.
A fantastic review as always Sir and well done on the 5 year anniversary of the channel, this was a great indulgance for you.
We did enjoy ourselves, sir, and had been looking forward to driving this car for some considerable time....
Oh Congratulations Sir, 5 years. Hard earned and well deserved, true determination. Your Wife must be absolutely on board with you too.
What a beautiful example of the true Ford Executive. A friend of my Father's bought a green Consul L at the time. The interior was green vinyl and it had plain flat hub caps like a mk 1 Ford Escort. I don't recall which engine it had but I remember that the looks were very American with the big bumpers and the interior was absolutely huge compared to my Dad's Renault 16 TL.
Sir, we made it, didn't we? My lady wife has been incredibly understanding, so much more so than I could have ever have hoped. Absolutely lovely Granada, credit to its previous owners, fantastic condition and the absolute top of the tree at the time, unlike the Consul L!
There was an episode in the Sweeney where the bronze Granada NHK295M, actually a Consul chased a white Renault 16 RYR765R.
Very interesting.
@@minimaxi802, it was actually one of the later Mark I Granadas, a 3.0 Ghia (RHJ 997R), used in that episode.
@@lloydvehicleconsulting a very nice Renault 16 featured in the New Avengers episode Tail of the Y also and Purdey on a Honda or am I confused
Thanks for this video! Reminds me of an article I saw on the history of Granadas and Scorpios in Practical Classics! Unfortunately we didn't get this in New Zealand - just an Australian assembled Ford Cortina with a 4.1 Falcon Six that was overpowered and handled badly.
No, these Granadas were not offered in Australia and New Zealand at the time, nor were the Mark IIs from memory.
Happy Anniversary! 🎉🙂
Thank you, sir!
@@lloydvehicleconsulting You're welcome!
Congratulations Sir.! I quite enjoy the shambolic shuffles which have the mk1 and 2 granadas. Very biased to mk2 as family had a fleet as taxis and wedding cars which doubled as our summer holiday cars to the south
We do like Mark I and Mark II Granadas on this channel, don't we, sir? There is a good reason for that, of course!
Lovely car.. Always find it hurts when I see one of these stripped to banger race.
If you look in the description below, you will see a link to a video I did where there was a show of just Mark I and Mark II Granadas, most of them in absolutely lovely condition. All the owners are actually former or current banger racers, so they are ironically helping to preserve many examples of the Mark Is and Mark IIs.
Ok Joseph I’m going too watch the sweeney after this video
Very good, sir! I could hear that Harry South closing theme in my head as we finished filming.
I notice your jacket...
What about it, sir?
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Very Sweeney! 🙂
Totally unintentional, sir!
11th
Did you enjoy it, sir!?
It’s rear end is tragic
Peugeot 604 much nicer
I think that there are many more tragic ends in this world than the rear of this Granada....
The Peugeot 604 was a lovely design and a great drive but the Granada did not have to borrow the Mk3 Cortina's doors like the 604 ended up with the 504's. Luckily the design worked well for the 604.
As for the Granada's rear it fitted perfectly with the TransAtlantic theme of the rest of the car. Think 1970 Mercury Cougar and you will understand the designer's thinking.
The Peugeot, however, wins hands down for its frontal treatment, very distinguished.
I must be an outlier. This car does not appeal to me at all. It has a bland exterior and the interior reeks of plastic. I know, I know, it's a product of that era.
I hate to say it, sir, but judging by the rest of the comments so far, you may find yourself in a bit of trouble over the next few hours....
Now go get hair transplant
Very rude
Now, go and get an attitude transplant...
Hello Joseph , Driving that Granada looks a lot of fun .Many congratulations on the 5 year anniversary of your channel. I look forward to the next 5 years .🎂🧁🍾🥂🍺
Thank you, sir! We made it. Lots more reviews to come from this trip to the Great British Car Journey as well.
