Dan it’s been about 12 or 15 years ago, didn’t you post a huge Warsaw grouper on spearboard? Something over 400lbs or at near the 400’ mark? Not sure if you had video from that dive but would you put a video collage together on it? You should talk about the way you dive, gear, training and mind set/ focus how you do this diving as deep as your team does. Love this vids!!!
DZM, yes, it was back in 2005. Fish weighed a little more than 400 LBS and was speared on a WW2 wreck in 425'. Amazing dive and adventure. Thanks for the suggestion and ideas! Glad you like the video! That's an awesome area for sure! Best, Dan
LW, well, about the time I think I've got it figured out, it turns out to be 180 degrees off from what I expected. lol. Your area can be challenging for visibility, years ago, we had a couple of trips get canceled because of bad visibility in 60-80 feet out there. If you can't get a very recent report from a trusted friend, then "if you wanna know, you gotta go" is the only way. Glad you like the videos! Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon , Thanks for the quick reply! I am fairly new to spearing, but I have dove on and off for 15yrs, made it official 2yrs ago and have been going out more and more. I hope to get enough education to go to the places you do. And I thought I may have been judging it wrong on the vis but sounds like it’s not always as it should be. And from your videos I can tell experience is everything. Might see you out there one day, Stay Safe and Happy Hunting. :)
Hey DB, heck yeah! That's some great bottom you've got up there! A couple of my buddies get up there a few times every Summer. Let me know if you need any advice or anything. Good luck with your spearing! Best, Dan
Dan was wondering if you ever had any problems with G W s or Tigers and how you handled those situations. I have been amazed at your awareness of what's going on by the types of fish that appear. You also stay calm or so it seems and just do what s necessary. Do you have video of the GW encounter? That was another great dive. Thanks for sharing.
@@danmacmahon3973 that would be great! i'm always interested in new ways of doing things. also what kind of fuel line do you use on your PHs? my neighbor machined some beautiful ones. now i need to source the right fuel line.
We put in next to you last Saturday for the spo, we found a pretty cool wreck that has an interesting anchor on it. I got in touch with MB about it....
Hey Team S, I saw a big CC pull in right as we were headed for the bridge. That new wreck sounds interesting, Mikes a good friend, did you send him a pic of the anchor? Best to you guys, Dan
Dan MacMahon yeah that was us. We didn’t get a pic of it as we were shooting for the spo, shoot me an email and I’ll talk to you about it. Jmracing25@aol.com
KTG, I dive HP 120's as a main. You need to know your SAC (surface air consumption )rate. Say for example it's .5 CF at the surface, at 33 feet, it would be 1.0 CF, at 99 feet, It'd be 2.0 CF, at 231 feet, It'd be 4.0 CF , etc., the deeper you go the more mix you burn and the less time your tank will last. I can't stress enough that this type of advanced range diving requires training. They will teach you what you must know to take on this type of activity! Best, Dan
As always awesome video Dan, I enjoy it as I miss diving so much... What regs do you use at this depth dude? I hear they are tuned really nicely, they don't sound like Poseidons though! All the best to you, I wish you safe ascents always, regards Dimitris
Hey Dimitris, we only use Zeagle regulators. Zeagle makes great stuff and I never saw a reason to change to something else....Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments. All the best to you as well. Dan
Thanks Paul! It really is a special spot! I think most of the tech training agencies would recommend a working PO2 of 1.2-1.3 on a dive like that. Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
That was a cool dive, like they all are. I know you have to go where the money is, but if you drop in shallow PLEASE record it. We all love watching lots of bottom time. You'll get that hog next time!
Hey Mike, I think it's just spending more time in the water and gaining experience. If I'm in shallow water, and there's any uncertainty about whether the fish is legal, I pass on it. As far as I'D., even similar looking species have differences, swimming patterns, subtle physical differences, reactions to a diver, etc....with time, you'll learn to easily judge size and species. Best, Dan
Hey Captain Tom, it was around 74 on the bottom. Felt like natures AC compared to being on the boat. I saw one Bull the entire trip on a wreck in 240' , pretty nice after the multitudes of them in the shallower stuff this time of year! Glad you enjoyed the video! Best, Dan
Hey Austin, I bought a solid block of 2" thick rubber usually used as a bumper pad for semi's backing into a loading ramp. Cut a chunk out, about 2x3" and then simply drilled two, 7/8" holes into it to hold the PH's. You would of course drill the holes to match whatever the OD of your PH is. Drilled a 3/16 hole in both PH holes for water drainage and mounted with a couple of screws. You might have to lightly sand them a little. Also, remember to test fit everything "wet" , not dry. Need any more help, just yell. Best, Dan
awesome! it seems to me like you hold your breath a little then breath out? am i wrong lol, still new to diving and want to get into spear fishing here in Florida
Hey Johnny, the training agencies teach regular breathing in and out, so that's what I'd go with. You'll love spear fishing, after almost 50 years I still can't wait to go. If you need any advice on anything, just reach out. Best to you, Dan
Dan MacMahon thanks dan! Yeah I’ve only done pole spear with lionfish. My brother is working on building us two custom spearguns with some zebra wood and Purple Heart. I just got my open water and Nitrox. I wish i could get in the water everyday lol. But would love to spear something here in Florida right off the gulf coast.
Hey MB, thanks. Just squeaked this one in, looks like we've got 2 tropical storms/Hurricanes coming into the Gulf in a few days! Glad you liked the video! Best, Dan
Scott, it's an old 1990's model made by Zeagle. Pretty much an antique! I just use it for a bottom timer in depths over 212' (it only reads to 212'). I usually also wear a Seaquest Solution as it reads to 325' or a Scubapro bottom timer when diving really deep stuff. I know of course that there's lots of advanced stuff out there, but I'm good until I retire with what I'm doing! Best, Dan
Another great video Dan. Now you got me curious to about the great white encounter story. I have an equipment question. I know you use the OnBoard Bandit system for your bands. Once you make the band, how do you fit it through the band hole in the muzzle? It looks like the profile of the cable tie would prevent that. Unless, you make the band while it's on the muzzle.?. Thank you in advance for your reply. BTW, I'm jonesing for a new video...weather permitting of course. :)
Hey Henry, my muzzle came with narrow slots cut into the band holes to allow a band to be stretched and pulled/popped into the muzzle. If your muzzle doesn't have those slots, I'd either cut it and make it that way, but if impracticable or unwanted, then I'd simply make them on the gun. We're def ready to go as soon as the weather breaks, those 2 late season Hurricanes and now these strong cold fronts have really made it tough to be offshore lately. I appreciate you watching and your comments! Best, Dan
Hey dan.. when ever you are descending u take deep long breathes. I thought it was supposed to be regular breathing and no breath holding. Please elaborate thanks.
BP, I'd def go with however your instructor/training school taught you. Safety should always be the main focus. "Breath Holding" is generally considered a def no/no on Scuba, due to risking an Embolism during ascent and increased CO2 retention during the dive. (I'm sure as a certified diver you know this). My regular breathing cycle is probably longer than most, due to experience and comfort in the water. I might extend taking a breath for a second or two occasionally, to avoid spooking a fish I'm stalking, but that's about it. Regular breathing in and out is def the way to go. Best, Dan
Yes that’s how I was taught. I was just curious cause seemed like your breathing was longer. I was also told u can hold your breath at a depth as long as you aren’t ascending or descending. Thanks dan. Awesome response
Hey Juan, it's not the ball size that might sink it but the solid skull on my head that's the problem, lol. Thanks brother, I appreciate your comments and glad you liked the video! Best, Dan
Dan, are you having more shark problems in recent years? I'm in the big bend area and they've gotten horrible. I've seen more tigers this year than the rest of my life combined. Not cool for the
BC, unfortunately yes. The Bulls are out of control out here in the shallower stuff, all the way out to the middle grounds. The sandbars are thick everywhere in those same areas. Lots of reasons, the government mandated shut down of the commercial Shark fishery, the huge blow back if a recreational diver or fisherman kills a shark, no recreational shark fishing tournaments, climate change (warmer waters), the huge increase of Red Snapper in our areas, etc. etc.....I realize that Sharks are endangered in many parts of the world but they're out of control out here (as you know). Good luck with those tigers, I'd hit a small spot, shoot a fish or two and plane off and run and repeat. Try to avoid long dives, especially on large spots and def try and avoid back dives. If you have to back dive, put 2 divers in. One to get the task done and one to ride shotgun. Best to you, Dan
BB, lol, I had the same thought watching the video, visions of deep fried Hog with an ice cold beer were def on my mind! Thanks for the comment! Best, dan
@@danmacmahon3973 you are not fair my friend, OK you killed some fishes with all this equipment, these fishes what chances had?Congratulations OK? R u happy now? It would be more fair and (male) sorry about my english, to shoot them with your own power. Now it is like a video game, no suspens, it's fake no interesting at all
WS, I love them! They're a couple of knots slower than the Yamaha V8 350's but vastly superior at everything else. Got a year on them this month and couldn't be more pleased. If you're in the market or want more info, just let me know, glad to help. Best, Dan
I’m super hooked on your channel Dan, I’m wanting to commercial spearfish myself. I’d obviously have to get Tri mix certified, but do you equalize your ears every ten feet or so? If I don’t my ears begin to hurt unbearably bad...
AG2, man I'm glad you like the videos. I wish you a lot of success in becoming a commercial spear fisher. I try and equalize immediately upon splashing and then as needed. A lot of the time I can just make a swallowing motion and rock my head a little and they clear. It's a small thing, but the consistent ability to easily clear your ears is a huge plus for commercial spearing! Best to you, Dan
Hey Daniel, a very rough estimate would be about 4-5 minutes of deco minimum for every minute of bottom time. That could easily double depending on a lot of factors. That depth is no joke and should never be attempted with proper training and proper gear. Glad you liked the video and I always appreciate your comments. Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon thanks for the info. No worries the deepest I’ve been is 120’ and I didn’t enjoy it. That’s why I know what you do is so difficult but you make it look easy.
Hey Mike, yeah they're still pretty thick that size and bigger in the deeper stuff. We had a few around 100 or a little more the trip before last. I'll video some 100's as soon as I can. Best, Dan
KTG, def take all the training you can get and find a couple of smart capable buddies that have the same itch! Like the song says "chances are you'll go far, if you get in with the right bunch of fellows". Best, Dan
Carson, yes, in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, off Florida's West Coast. I've seen 3 GW's for sure and one more probable. They're not super abundant in the Gulf, but the GW trackers always have a few around, especially during the winter months. Best, Dan
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.
MP, sure, Why wouldn't it be? We have a well managed and regulated fishery, lots of fish and hundreds of thousands of never dove spots. I dive in the Gulf of Mexico, off the West Coast of Florida . Best, Dan
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.
Thanks Eli ! No, that was one of the crew, I think he was startled by it! Can't blame 'em, def not expected at 200'+! Glad you liked the video. Best, Dan
AH, yes, I was at a comfortable punch out time. I could have easily speared him, but, If I hadn't stoned him, it could have easily doubled my deco obligation. Which would have really separated me at all levels from my buddy. I'm hoping to get another shot at the Hog next year, we'll see! Great question, Best, Dan
Hey Jeff, yes mostly the wrong species or too short to be legal. Plus, it would really have to be a prize for me to engage it with free shafts during an ascent from 282'. I've done it before and will probably do it again but it's def not the smartest thing to do in the world. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 I'm sure. Well keep up the good work. Just waiting to see some with fish on the boat. It's crazy how small they look when you spear them in the water until you poke them through the eyes with that contraption. Love the channel. Just started watching a week or 2 ago and been binge watching. Great job 👍
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.
Karl, I stop the boat on a regular basis and pick up floating debris, pretty much every trip. The reason I didn't grab that paper towel was that there was a great chance that one of the crew had just wiped his rear end with it. Paper towels are made of wood and will disintegrate quickly with no harm to the environment. Dan
Thank you for your reply. I live in Hawaii and I'm also a boater fishermen and diver. I pick up trash whenever I can I must say I've left a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of life and off few times so I can understand have a great day

Thanks DSJ, glad that you like them! Probably a Giant Hammer that knocked me around for a few minutes, had to keep punching him with an empty gun. DZM, yes, it was back in 2005. Fish weighed a little more than 400 LBS and was speared on a WW2 wreck in 425'. Amazing dive and adventure. Thanks for the suggestion and ideas! Glad you like the video! That's an awesome area for sure! Best, Dan
Do you have any tips for predicting vis? I’m in the Venice/Sarasota area and go out maybe 30 miles max. And Love the videos!
what are those fish schooling 1/2 down and when you go up ???
Hey John, mostly Jacks with the majority of them being Almaco's. Best, Dan
Great video, do you ever spearfish off of Steinhatchee FL, I'm just getting into the sport this year.
Hey DB, heck yeah! That's some great bottom you've got up there! A couple of my buddies get up there a few times every Summer. Let me know if you need any advice or anything. Good luck with your spearing! Best, Dan
Loved it mate I was only wandering if you have had problems with great whites till you mentioned it.
Hey John, I'd love to get one on film but if that never happens, then I'm OK with that as well! Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 stay safe brother.
This should be an instructional video entitled Deep Tank Diving a "How to Spearfish like a Master."

Thanks Ben, I use the Panduit ties with the SS Tongue. If you're interested, let me know and I'll get a part number for you. Best, Dan

Dan how long does 1 tank last in this dive?
Dan
I like you spearguns
Thanks Glen! I finalized the design maybe 10 years ago and haven't changed much since! She def gets it done! Best, Dan
Dude , epic dive ! What mix at that depth for what head ?
Thanks Paul! It really is a special spot! I think most of the tech training agencies would recommend a working PO2 of 1.2-1.3 on a dive like that. Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
That was a cool dive, like they all are. I know you have to go where the money is, but if you drop in shallow PLEASE record it. We all love watching lots of bottom time. You'll get that hog next time!
Thanks Jimmy, if we hit anything shallow, I'll def do just that! I appreciate you watching and your comments! Best, Dan
Dan would there be any way to do more in the way of Fish Id, and how you approximate size. Everything looks bigger underwater.
Best, Dan
Thanks for the reply Dan. I’m new to spear fishing not diving, but yes I need more time in the drink!
Nice broww🙏🙏🙏
Nelayan, thanks brother, much appreciated! Best, Dan
Dan where do you get your shaft holders. Love your videos
Hey Bud, good stuff. Not cold that deep? No Sharks? Lol. Good times!
Best, Dan
What's your air mixture? It can't be all compressed.
Hey Debra, it's a light heli-trox mix, keeping the PO2 at the recommended 1.3 for working dives. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thank you.
Are those big almaco jacks or amberjacks?
DG, mostly Alamco's but a few AJ's in there as well.......some real beauties too! Best, Dan
Dan how or where can i get a dual ph holder like yours?

Back at work dan good start
Hey MB, thanks. Just squeaked this one in, looks like we've got 2 tropical storms/Hurricanes coming into the Gulf in a few days! Glad you liked the video! Best, Dan
Dan, what dive computer do you use?
Scott, it's an old 1990's model made by Zeagle. Pretty much an antique! I just use it for a bottom timer in depths over 212' (it only reads to 212'). I usually also wear a Seaquest Solution as it reads to 325' or a Scubapro bottom timer when diving really deep stuff. I know of course that there's lots of advanced stuff out there, but I'm good until I retire with what I'm doing! Best, Dan
Awesome video!!! What bc you using Dan? Thanks
Hey T50, it's a Zeagle Stiletto, great Scuba spear fishing BC! Best, Dan

Dan, I enjoy your videos. Do you do these deep dives on air or? Are you DCing on O2?
Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thank you for the advice on the bands.
Como faço pra ter uma ponteira dessa explosiva?
Hey dan.. when ever you are descending u take deep long breathes.
Bro 282 ft deep, surprised the boat doesn’t sink , with the size of your balls! Shits impressive bro
Hey Juan, it's not the ball size that might sink it but the solid skull on my head that's the problem, lol. Thanks brother, I appreciate your comments and glad you liked the video! Best, Dan
Are Amber Jacks always that high in the column. Every video it seems like they meet you way before any other fish do.
Finally he’s back!!! I’ve been waiting for my dose of under water adventure! Thanks for the video Dan!
You're welcome MHAP! Glad you enjoyed it!
That hog fish looked delicious....
BB, lol, I had the same thought watching the video, visions of deep fried Hog with an ice cold beer were def on my mind! Thanks for the comment! Best, dan

How are you liking your Suzuki's?
Dan MacMahon yeah I usually do a jaw swing type deal and it works, but good to know on the descent. Thanks again!!
That’s some deep water. Curious; how long do u have to decompress on a dive that deep? Thanks Dan, nice shooting.
I wonder what mix you use , cause at that depth you can suffer narcosis.... Can you tell me please, great video!!
Dan do you ever see the 70 +lbs Amberjack like we used to see offshore Jacksonville in the 80s
Hell we still see them out of mayport regularly.
Hey Mike, yeah they're still pretty thick that size and bigger in the deeper stuff. We had a few around 100 or a little more the trip before last. I'll video some 100's as soon as I can. Best, Dan

Spearfishin in scuba diving??? Is it legal?

You take fish, but can't even grab the trash floating right by you. Disgusting
Dan
