1 minute of intro what the fuck is that
Half a million people watched this and no one said anything about Gulag Archipelago not being a novel but the story of Soviet labour camps where several million people died. Basically it is Soviet's Auschwitz where people died of cold, hunger, disease and torture. It is so disappointing to see people removed from history and consequently reality. It happened about 70 years ago, so new, so fresh yet we know nothing about it. Thans to our collective ignorance similar atrocities will happen again and again.

According to Jordan, The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky is the greatest book of all time and I couldn’t agree more! THIS book is a masterpiece beyond comprehension.

Yeah . And most of his other famous recommendation ain't even in this list . This list is trash.
@@revolution94ful I always get the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation for any of the Russian literature like Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy etc. It’s quite subjective but if I was to recommend a translation, it would be them as I find them really engaging and the gist of the story is always very very well put out.
@@user-erick007 yea it’s not the best but there a few gems on it like Nietzsche’s work and Ghulag Archipelago. But it’s quite a boring an obvious list. Any one who is interested in such topics would definitely already have either read them or have them on their future reading list. So the video is quite useless.
Whilst I agree that it is a masterpiece, Jordans list missed it in favour of two lesser novels. All told, however I prefer Tolstoy. He wad a much greater, and less selfish man than D, whose books mainly treat of sick and unsavoury characters. As for Jordan, hes over-rated!

My life is ended
Dr. Jordan Peterson is one of my biggest inspirations.
At the end of my secondary education I spent a year as a non academic student in a 'prestigious' high school that groomed the deserving for University. I spent my productive time in the library and read every book of substance in that confined space. None of the books I read were on Peterson's list although I have read several in the intervening 60 years.
Being in a position to learn is very much a gift and an accident of social situation.
Although I did manage to drag myself up from a ridiculous primary and secondary education, I went back to school part time from Grade 8 (correspondence) and in evenings school classes and was eventually granted a prestigious scholarship. I earned a Physics and Physical Oceanography degree at age 35. I have to say that the formal education was of no value except to teach me how to teach myself and for that I remain so, so grateful.
Peterson is a complex guy who speaks to me like a prairie farmer neighbour. I know him. I learn from him. I drive my nails straighter because of him.

Great video. I live in Toronto, 31 at the moment. And I've read a couple of these books in college, but one book that stands out: Grapes of Wrath. Read it in grade 9, lived in Florida. Did it for a class project and fell in love with John Steinbeck. I preach this book to my friends 🙌

its a simple book but quite unbreakable message that sends
12 Rules for life seem like a simple book, the ideas will plunge you into abject pensiveness.
I have read The Red and the Black, A Farewell to Arms, Brave New World, and Grapes of Wrath. Dr. Petersen is amazing in his presentations. I highly recommend his Biblical series, if you have not seen them. Insightful videos. Dr. Peterson presents his ideas with honest, integrity, and clarity. I don't always agree with what he says, but there has never been a time when I did not understand his message. Bravo, sir. You are the model professor. Teachers should take lessons from you.
This remains me to always remember to look at the world, not only through my knowledge but also through my ignorence
Glad I found this. I’ve made a list of these books and I know I will read at least some of them. I have read “The Grapes of Wrath” when I was only 16. I had just come to the US not speaking a word of English. I read the book with a dictionary on hand. Not easy, but by time I was finished I spoke English. 😊
That is an incredible feat, I could only imagine the dedication and focus it took to finish a book in a language you do not know, decoding the language in the process, inspiring 😌

I'm an avid reader and I hate not finishing a book but I just put down Modern Man in Search of a Soul yesterday after making it through over 1/3 of the book. Some books can be beyond one's comprehension.
Now I will advocate for The Gulag Archipelago. I'm currently on Vol. 2

Read the Road to Wigan Pier. Really enjoyed George Orwell's vivid description of the British working class. George Orwell expresses his knowledge on the subject by going to this village and living with the mine workers.

@Sam I've read Brave New World, The Idiot, Notes From The Underground, The Gulag Archipelago, and Man's Search For Meaning. You could read Notes From The Underground first, it is a fairly short read and very powerful (but quite dark).
The woman speaks very clearly, succinctly, enthusiastically, professionally and with a genuine concern for the listener. Her voice is like music to my ears. Thank you dear kind enthusiastic professional lady.

I have been a fan of Peterson`s work for the past couple of years, and actively looking for books he recommends. I am half way through that list and all of these books are highly educating. I would also expand the reading palette with more neuroscience and philosophy books because they are great knowledge foundation for developing critical thinking. (Adding authors such as Robert Sapolsky and S. Pinker)
Funny how I already had 4 of those books on my to buy and read list for this year.

There are 2 books that have made a huge difference in my life:
1. "Healing The Shame That Binds You" - by John Bradshaw
2. "No More Mr. Nice Guy" - by Dr. Robert Glover (by the way, this book has absolutely nothing to do with being mean or being a jerk)
The above 2 books are excellent to help for those that have emotional or psychological issues. Both books are a must read.

1. "Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway" - by Dr. Susan Jeffers
2. "You Can Heal Your Life" - by Louise L. Hay

@@graham6132 It's your loss. These books helped me like no other books (or self help programs) have. And, believe me, I have been through A LOT of self-help books & programs. There have been many other people helped by these books as well.

It feels terrible on my side for the man since I witnessed further extremes and know all about gabaergics like the famous benzos, I tried alternatives myself on and off. and after his hopefully full recovery, I feel terrible for what I see might bring for him on the table in the future as for a self help guru that some people hate and as they insist on wanting to label him as just "another" self help guru but a radical one.

I Don't feel anything but honored continue consuming what he has to say of truths, and putting these general guide lines that we all should thrive for as a journey and not an ultimate destination, but we were blindfolded somehow in our recent era. now I'm not only "learning" from him or/and flatter myself for having at least to think the same way he does, without a bit of the magnificent articulation he amuses us with, and that strikes us with epiphanies, I'm now "relating" to his slips and fuck ups, and the struggle we all can easily go back to no matter how good we are.
To be honest, it's narcissistic thinking he's our superhero as we all love to hear those who are pretentiously flawless so that we are guaranteed whether it's truthful or not, but is it really about truths then? or just if he wins or loses before our projection starts. wrong. he's a human with a great mind, Introspection, reconnecting all the dots forming guidelines for not perfecting our lives but to make it at least worth it. I am nothing but feeling and having all the good wishes for this man.

This is a great list and I have set a goal to read those on the list I have not yet read.
I would add The Gift by Lewis Hyde, Vintage Books 2009.
I really like him and I wish I had heard him when I was young (time warp) but I am not a mindless follower and I take everything with a grain of salt. One of the sad things in my life is that I had no guide, no mentor, no one to show me the way. I got lost.
Same is true of me at 62. Still want to read them cause this is my only lifetime.

I have read Brave New World and The Grapes of Wrath. I have started but not finished reading 4 other books on the list including The Idiot, The Road to Wigan Pier, The Gulag Archipelago, and Beyond Good and Evil. I was surprised 1984 and Crime and Punishment were not on the list from how much JP talks about them. 1984 and Crime and Punishment are on my top 10 favorite books of all time. The next book I want to read is Maps of Meaning. My parents got me that book for Christmas at my request. That will be a thoroughly enjoyable undertaking I am sure
Im honestly quite surprised no classical greek made it on the list. Phaedo by plato perhaps or something more metaphysical.
Epictetus is severely underrated for those that might want to give him a go. Marcus Aurelius talks about him a ton.
A multitude of Petersons lectures reflect concepts heavily discussed by socrates and epictetus. Very Stoic by nature with an admittance to the unknown but searching to define purpose and justice based on wisdom and choice.
