This hunch I was given by the galactic majesty with which it was sung by Floor Jansen in 2016. Your cover is worthy of the Nightwish provenance.
WOOOOW! It'll be a long comment, but - please - stay with me! 🙂It's one of the best covers of this song that I've heard. You are so creative! And you surprised me many times during this performance. It begins like a very simple cover, something like: "I'm just gonna play the main vocal melody on the flute, with some background and we'll be fine". I really thought: it's gonna be it. But I was completely wrong! Sudden jump in octave and a different flute/recorder? I'm not sure, I'm not an expert or anything. :-) And then it get's crazier and crazier! But THIS: 3:24 - WHAT? You really know what you're doing! It became suddenly very progressive, distorted, sometimes even out of tune for purpose.... Again: WOW. These slides - BTW, hoe can you do a slide on a flute? I used to play a simple flute back in the days, so I know that you can choose notes, like with piano, but slides? You have to tell me, how it's done. Anyway - great cover, I'll be listening to it more. Are you a composer also? I think you're very creative in a good way. You do not "show off", that beginning was very simple on purpose - to lead us to many surprises later. You're smart. I'm a fan now! And to think I came here just by accident, 'cause I like reactions to Nightwish. Anyway - I'm loving this, thank you for a great cover!
Hi Charlie! So glad you liked it! Yes the second section is in a higher octave with some added harmonies. The sliding was done with an open hole flute which allows me to slide my fingers to bend the pitch, and I can use my lips and head to do this also. I now usr a slide headjoint to make it even slidier - you can see this on some of my cover videos (and when I play live) like here: ruclips.net/video/BLJtHuo2NO8/видео.htmlsi=azSZ673QLxr_Ilkf The sound at 3:24 also uses singing and playing to create a distortion effect! I would like to tell you one thing about myself; I'm an absolute Nightwish hardcore fan and usually I don't like it when someone covers their songs, because very few have the necessary skills. Claire; you made it onto my playlist! This is so completely different and yet no less well played, arranged, and produced. Well done Claire, realy well done
